  • Range testing the Ranger Point Precision Clover Leaf Peep sight on my Marlin 1894.
    How does the clover leaf aperture work in the field with fiber optics. Plus I added the RPP Fiber Optic Front Sight also.
    Low profile rear sight plus bright fiber optics front and back make for a sweet package.

      Thanks. The RPP sight design does not allow for changing inserts. It's a one and done solution. And I might add, it's a rather large aperture, more like a ghost ring in function than a peep.

      Exciting stuff! I would love to get your feedback on the RPP vs Skinner "shootout". . . and the 629. I haven't done much pistol stuff on my channel yet. Not planned that way. I just had several leverguns that needed attention. FYI, my son bought a S&W Model 41 (22lr) yesterday from a small dealer/pawn shop not far from my house in the Houston suburbs. Sweet pistol. It was made in 1981 and is supposed to be "never fired". He's bringing it to the farm today and I'll do an unboxing/shooting video (or two) with it. "Production schedules" being what they are, it won't post for a few weeks, but I just wanted to give you a heads up that there is non-levergun content on the way. Thanks for watching Peter, and commenting!

      @@TargetSuite I only took the 44 Marlin and the 629 to the range today. Funny start with the rifle. The Rpp was set so low to start that I blew the target bracket to bits with the first shot. Had to raise the peep almost to the highest setting for 50 yrds. After that though I absolutely love the cloverleaf peep. The 629 is an altogether different beast. I had forgotten what a kick the 44 handgun had, and this one has a 4 1/4 " bbl. Thankfully I had some reloads as well. Can't claim to have been able to hit anything with it though. Still have a problem with the front sight being so blurry these days. The new peep sight sure has made it easier with the rifle though. I'll take the 1894 357 mag next time.

      Haha! Great start with the RPP sight😄 That's actually one of its strongest selling points . . . being able to work with factory fronts. Back to the 629. @@TargetSuite I have watched that video with great interest. The only question I would have about the Lvex glasses is, what if my distance vision is terrible? I would love to be able to have the sights clear again but if I can't see the target, then I've only solved half the equation. I'm going to look into the Lvex website though and see (pun intended) what hey may be able to do for me. Thanks again.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What happens to distance vision is the operative question and the answer is going to depend on the individual. For me, I only need slight correction at distance and so, what I see downrange is hurt by the low power Elvex glasses, but not washed out. Things like high contrast steel targets or six inch bullseyes still stand out well enough to shoot inside 50 yards. Not ideal, but it's good enough to keep me shooting. I hope it works out for you. When I looked at that thing I couldn't even imagine such a thing, but with your video and some more thinking...I like the idea. I've been thinking about what I wanted to do with my Marlin 357 since I can't shoot Cowboy Action anymore, I was thinking about a red dot or maybe a low power scope, but the aperture sight looks pretty good.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really is a pretty good sight solution. The fiber optics on either side of the aperture are helpful, but not over the top. But the combination of an aperture sight with a bright (and small diameter) fiber optic front sight like the RPP version is pretty nice. The beauty of the RPP rear sight is that by design, it keeps the aperture low and allows for a "standard" height front sight. The way Adam at RPP (Ranger Point Precision) described the fitting of the front sight was that you only needed to sand off the bottom of the sight little by little until it would go in about 1/3 of the way into the dovetail by hand. Then drift the sight in the rest of the way. But my older Marlin didn't work that way and I had to do some real grinding on the dovetail surfaces themselves. So just a heads up. Btw, I checked out your channel and saw you were also into RC stuff. Me too, but I had to consolidate hobbies 20 years ago and that is the one that got cut. Still miss those quiet, and still, late afternoons at the field.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John. Because of the open bottom of the RPP sight, i requires a flat surface the width of the sight. So the RPP peep will not work with the round top of your Mossberg 500.

    • @johnterpack3940
      @johnterpack3940 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TargetSuite hence the bit of tweaking. A piece of flat stock could be sanded to fit the receiver and provide a flat surface for the sight. It's a better option than the ghost rings purpose-built for shotguns.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John. I don't think I will post this on YT, but I am going to flatten the top of my wife's Marlin 60 to accept a Skinner or RPP peep sight. I don't know if there is enough material on your Mossberg to do that, or if you have the stomach for that big of a modification. But in the case of my wife's rifle, it's unusable to us "old" folks without a peep so it makes sense. Thanks again for all your comments.

    • @johnterpack3940
      @johnterpack3940 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TargetSuite what I could do is get a cheap picatinny rail and grind the slots off it. My 500 has a grooved section on top that looks pretty flat. Might not take much to flatten it. I always try and wear glasses of one kind or another when I am shooting (especially on camera). But forget more than I should. Since distance correction in my regular glasses is minimal, the question is whether I wear my regular glasses or shooting glasses with low power magnification. With a rifle, the low power magnification helps in some conditions and with some sights. But when it comes to handguns, I can't see the sights well enough to make out a sight picture unless I wear magnified shooting glasses. I posted a video about that last year. It was early in my TH-cam career, but maybe helpful? th-cam.com/video/Mbtg_V2gQKg/w-d-xo.html

    I think I'd be inclined to get an unrestricted aperture fitted (if available) and if not, drill that one out. I can't see why you'd want to limit the light transmission through sight. The front sight mod looks more useful but I wonder how it would affect your aim when shooting into a shaded area. I imagine it has the potential to overpower your view of the target.

Depending on where hte notch falls on your buckhorn, you might be able to get away with your factory front. You'd just have to take some careful measurements.

    Another advantage of the Ranger Peep is the increase of sight radius by repositioning to the greatest most spot on the receiver. The barrel profile is streamlined, as the oem rear sight in its location can catch and snag on scabbard, clothing, slings, and brush.

      Jimmie, those features are invisible to all but super human eyes. But you can see a hint of the fiber optics in the rear sight when the light is right. But not much. So I would say that from what the eye sees, they are not much different than Skinner or XS aperture sights.

      Jimmy, the only problem with the small peep is that in low light it blacks out. That's why there is so much interest today in "ghost ring" or large aperture sights. They are still very capable, accuracy wise. Check out this video where I put numbers to the accuracy potential of aperture sights. It's pretty surprising. th-cam.com/video/z9z6OLG86kU/w-d-xo.html

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael. I like them both. But lately, I've been replacing my rear sights with a Marble Arms Bullseye sight. The sight radius is a little less, but they are cheap and easy to install . . . and work with the front sights. I'm ok with the fiber optic front sights. RPP's version is small diameter and very bright. But for the shooting that I do, I prefer a traditional blade front sight (not the typical bead).

    Nice looking sight. sadly these 62 year old eyes just can't focus well enough anymore and the back sight just disappears so i do not have a point of reference to make sure the front sight is aligned correctly. And in the low light conditions that we normally encounter when hunting it is even worse... so everything for me is now scope or red dot.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No shame in that. As we get older, we can either adapt or take up bridge. And I'm not a fan of playing cards😀 I just ordered a scope to put on the Ruger Carbine from last weeks video. It will be a "service rifle" for me around the farm and the low power scope will make it more effective under most conditions.

      Josh, it's probably more a matter of personal preference than anything else. But my eyes to seem to center better on the round aperture of the Skinner than the "washed out" (not meant to be a derogatory term) aperture of the RPP sight. The downside to the Skinner sights is that the aperture is higher above the bore line than the RPP and you'll likely need to replace your front sight if you pick Skinner.

    I was waiting on this video that you said you would be posting in response to a previous comment I made. Thanks for posting. I'm nearly convinced that I need to go with a RPP peep instead of all the calculations and efforts at trying to find a new, fine-diameter fiber optic front sight that is high enough to compensate for the height of the Skinner I had mounted on my Marlin 1894 .357 mag carbine. I do hate to buy something and then just bag/store it with no intention of using it. Yeah well ... such are guns and modifications. Question: Did you try shooting the stock front sight with the new RPP peep before changing it out with the fiber optic, and if so, would you have been able to keep/use it without the fiber optic if you had preferred? I too am interested in a fiber optic due to rapid acquisition related probably to age and eyes as well. Hopefully they manufacture one in green as that is my preferred fiber optic and reflex dot color. Some research has shown that green is picked up by the eye more readily than other bright colors and it seems to work for me. Thanks again for the video. Nice shooting, by the way, on that 130 yard gong. That's a testament to your sights, hold, and trigger control.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom. I did shoot a lot with the factory front. It was just like a Skinner or XS sight in function. The fiber front is sweet but the big question for me is durability. Not only from being banged, but also, and I don't have any data on this is, how do gun cleaning solvents affect the plastic fiber optics. I suspect over time, the fiber optics will haze from the solvents, destroying the light gathering capability. For now, I may actually purchase the CloverLeaf Peep from RPP and keep the front sight. Time will tell how durable the fiber optics are.

      @@TargetSuite I was curious about the front sight with the RPP peep in terms of elevation change ... that you were able to make only a minor adjustment of the peep to get your preferred zero while maintaining factory front. My Skinner sight gives me a 16.5 inch error with factory front at 50 yards. I'm assuming that the RPP will give me only a slight error that can be compensated with the RPP elevation adjustments. Thanks.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily. I like RPP because you have the option to keep the factory front sight. And for the right eyes, that fiber optic front sight really pops and would be great for hunting. But I have found it to be a little distracting for the type of shooting I do. That rear sight is just a loaner form RPP, so when I return it, I will probably replace both front and rear with Skinner.

      @@TargetSuite One thing you can do to reduce light output from the front sight's fiber optic is try a little tape or a little paint over part of the tube. It's simple and effective. Durability may be another issue. For Skinner, of which I have the rear peep (no protective wings). It took quite a bit of effort to figure out which height was best. And, years ago, there wasn't much support to help with that mystery of life. I'm not sure how things are these days. I have to say, I like how the RPP rear adjusts so easily. It's too bad it's so expensive, relatively speaking. Well, another reason to spend a glorious day at the range.
