    • @Undivided-X
      @Undivided-X 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@surrealorb8325 yeah I'm relatively sure that according to the laws of physics, if an object breaks on impact, the total force (and consequently, velocity) gets distributed (as a vector sum) among the remaining pieces, so technically, the car breaking would have had some impact in reducing the G force of the safety cell itself. The question is, would that resultant G force of the safety cell part of the car be safe enough. Arguably not if Grosjean had just hit an unyielding object headfirst, which is where we can be thankful that it was the halo that took that impact and not Grosjean's helmet.

    • @SunLevi
      @SunLevi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +173

      @@azranasuha3306 It exploded like that because the barrier ripped the car in half exposing the fuel. The cars are designed to not explode like that hence why we never see cars go up in flames like that on impact, even major ones, but again, in this case the car was ripped in half. And that guard rail isn't a common one either, it's probably been there since the track was first constructed and was never disturbed.
      I'm sure it will all be revised now, and thank goodness Romain is okay.

      Each barrier is designed in a different way.
      This is the barrier on a straight, it is not expected to get hit head-on as its designed to be hit at a shallow angle and to not bounce a car back out into the middle of the very fast straight.
      Unlike a corner barrier with tyres that are designed to cushion a car and slow it down that way.

No doubt F1 would be a lot safer if cars' wheels couldn't hook each other and potentially launch or flip cars like we also saw in today's race, but I sure hope the open wheel part of open wheel racing doesn't come to an end any time soon because it's just too dangerous. I'm feeling a bit conflicted right now because on a day like today, it's hard to justify opposition toward anything that would improve survivability, but where do you draw the line? when I saw that crash, I literally stood up with shock and was praying for him to be ok. Like Toto and Pierre said, I didn’t know that modern Formula 1 cars can break in half. Also like Seb said, the barriers were unsafe. But the halo and the firesuit did its job and kept Grosjean alive. I was really glad that he didn’t go unconcious because with that impact (of 64G I think it was), it won’t be strange to go unconcious. I think god does exist.

      F1 do have a lot of safe barriers, but yeah, not sure why that particular barrier is like that, I know it's not a usual place for an F1 car to be/crash at but still, they should have those tire barriers every wall/guard. • @Lostsage01

    Glad Romain made it out of this one alive. Makes me wonder how safe this type of barrier is, as it’s similar in style to the single barrier that punctured Kubica’s rally car and nearly severed his hand. Vettel is totally right that the barrier shouldn’t have split open and the car / fuel tank shouldn’t have caught fire like that, but since it did happen I think they might need to take a close look at how they can improve metal barriers if they continue to use them. On the one hand, metal barriers absorb energy better than a concrete barrier, but the car can only be so safe and it can’t protect well against a broken barrier cutting into the chassis.

    Vettel is spot on to be fair. Everyone keeps saying its amazing how quick the response was.... A couple of guys turned up with some small fire extinguishers and was not really putting out the fire, they didn't really help...
    If Grosjean had been knocked out or unable to get out that vehicle himself, he would have burned alive, as those fire extinguishers were not doing much to put out the fire.
    It was the Halo and Grosjean getting up and out of the car, that saved his life it had nothing to do with the safety car or marshals. Those marshals were not controlling that fire, they didn't have the tools to control or reduce that fire quick enough. Nothing against the marshalls as you are not going to put out an inferno with some basic fire extinguishers. The Marshals were just there watching an inferno and could not really do anything

    Interesting insight into the minds of the drivers. Hamilton (in another interview) sees the bigger picture where this serves as a reminder to the world of the sheer danger that their sport has and that that should not be underestimated even with all that’s been done to increase safety. Vettel more clinically is straight in about how the guard rail failed and that can’t be allowed to happen. Of course the first concern for both is that Grosjean is safe

      To be fair Antoine had bad luck.
      Jules wasn't precautious enough and was travelling too fast under double yellow flags and on a slippery track.
      Romain ... well ... we all know his experience on crashing cars and driving like an idiot.
      Jean Alesi was a pretty expensive pilot in terms of car damages.
      Olivier Panis broke a leg in a bad luck situation.
      Sebastian Bourdais took a hard hit at Indy 500 qualifiying.
      I don't know why us frenchies like to wreck cars but judging by how badly we drive everyday, I'm not that much surprised...

    What idiot designed that race circuit ? talk about safety, ?the safety workers are behind an armco barrier protruding at a ridiculous angle on to the race track,
    The armco facing the approaching cars should be parallel to the track and the opening for safety crew angled behind it so an impact with the barrier from an approaching car would be at less of an acute angle, The angle at which that HAAS hit the barrier was almost an exact replica of Senna's accident with a cement wall only feet from the track, but obviously armco is a little more forgiving than a concrete wall.

      Without the halo there would have been any difference. Probably a halo would have saved Senna :(...

      As Vettel said, the guard rail wasn't supposed to fail like that. Imagine if his car had a little less momentum. He would have been trapped inside the barrier and the outcome would have been much worse. Also, if a Marshall was actually being "protected" behind that protective barrier at that moment, he would be in pieces right now. Maybe these barriers are not safe enough, at least in that placement.

    I see the fireball in the background and tv never showed what happened for a while, I thought someone had left some fuel at the side of the track, never in million years did I expect to see those images, I've always like Romain and was so relieved he is OK, it is a miracle, in those moments after all drivers, pit crews, the media, the marshals and us the global viewing audience were as one , praying to our gods and beliefs that Romain and anyone else trackside would be ok. Thank God thank the halo and thank the first responders. How brave of the 19 other drivers to race on. F1 will learn a little bit more to eliminate what happened today. All the best Romain, we have you in our hearts. Best wishes after this season.

    Danill Kyvat was really2 somekind unsettled (I can't think any word) we can saw him looking at his mirror so often after that incident. Anyway I'm happy Grosjean is ok that's most important and main priority of this kind sport, they put their life at risk to achieve their goal

    shows how far safety has come in this sport, his car was in half, on fire, and the front half I'm pretty sure went THROUGH the barrier
