      @@matthewruss I think that you may be right, they probably haven't got fireproof clothing. F1 should overthink the principle of volunteer marshalls (because they are also at risk, some of them sadly died like in Monza 2000 or Melbourne 2001) and give them proper equipment (i.e. clothes). Even then you can't expect that everybody will take unnecessary risks. A fire is something that can happen in motorsport and you need to have the possibility to deal with it within a reasonable time. It doesn't luckily happen too often anymore, but we have the same problems like decades ago. I'm not sure if even the medical delegate is wearing a fireproof suit. He seemed reluctant to get near the flames. In Lauda's case drivers pulled him out of the wreckage. Nowadays they probably would get some kind of penalty for that...

      No it's not. At the speed and angle he hit the rail estimating 59g force, he was lucky the rail failed and the car split before he went through the rail. Going through the rail reduced the g's along with the tail of the car splitting away and not having the mas behind him and adding to the forces of impact. Of course the halo did do the job to protect his had from the rail metal. From a physical point of view if the rail held and the car stayed intact - he wouldn't been so lucky. The fire was just a few kilos of fuel from a broken fuel lines. At the point of the accident he was carrying about 100 kilos of fuel which if all ignited would have been a lot worse.

      @@snowdogs01 I do agree that this would be a great thing, but (from my understanding) in terms of indycar it works out better because if a truck is located in the infield, it can get to most spots on the track far more quickly, any place on the track could be almost a straight line to the accident, while in Formula one the track layout is more complex, and would require a larger amount of trucks (and in turn more extinguishing chemicals, manpower, gasoline and operating cost, etc.) to achieve acceptable "coverage" for the whole track. Besides, even if there were fire trucks, marshalls would still probably have fire extinguishers on hand, and in most cases they would be spraying the car already anyway while the fire truck comes up. One of the most frightening F1 crashes I've ever seen. Kudos to the medical car team that got to Grosjean in less than 20 seconds, to the designers of the halo that protected him from certain fatal injury, and to the marshals and fire crews that responded in such a rapid fashion.
    However, one glaring flaw involves the steel barrier that he smashed into nearly head on. F1 seriously (and I'm sure they're already doing so as I type) look into phasing these out posthaste. Have they considered using the SAFER barrier technology that is standard in various other series (IndyCar and NASCAR as examples)?
    Finally, prayers for a speedy recovery to Romain and that he gets back in the cockpit soon. #haasracing

    This just in: burning cars smell like a house fire
    Scientists suggest that the fact that they're both on fire to be the cause for this anomaly

      @@steevedaw566 they do, actually. I've been near both. A close friend of mine had a house fire and I went to inspect it with him (afterwards, obviously). Funnily enough it smelled very similar to a car accident i witnessed where one of the vehicles involved caught on fire.

      @@fishbowl4798 I was a fireman,based at Newport Pagnell. We basically only dealt with car accidents on the M1. We hardly went to a house fire. I've seen and smelt some horrible sights,dear,dead,children in car seats.
      It was later,when I was a builder and worked in a fire gutted huge Victorian house,that I REALLY realised the difference between the smells,the latter giving me an ear infection from contaminated soot,in the plaster.
      But my point was how a near death accident had such long advert time,and also so much, "excitement" ... It probably was the most exciting thing that's happened in Formula 1 for at least three seasons... And it's sad;the vicarious nature of most humans.

    if those guardrails are still used next weekend then it is a massive failure of safety standards on the fia

    • @grossmeister1181
      @grossmeister1181 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? Those guard rails are made to „guide“ a car along it. They’re not made for such a heavy crash at that angle. If you put other types of barriers there it might be worse in a different scenario

    • @1997paulr
      @1997paulr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That might have been a key reason to why he has no broken bones. Those barriers were able to absorb the impact a lot better than concrete barriers would have been. If he goes head first into concrete and the car explodes in a similar way and Romain has broken bones i think he may have struggled to get out.
      A freak accident, but happy to see that he is ok!
