Bad ass. Saw UFO in the late 90’s in a bar in Pasadena, MD. They absolutely tore it up. Met Michael Schenker and his wife before the show. They were out front selling his new CD lol. But he was a class act. Awesome.
Paul Grady Not Matthias -- Eddie. That "Z" guitar was as much his signature as the "V" is for Michael. And at the time when "The Mad Axe Man" was Michael. It is a joy to see that back these last few years - tempered by age, but not talent or technique. Too bad EVH doesn't seem to be there yet.
This is a trip down memory lane! Used to have this show on both lp and vhs back in the days. Although they cut off Doctor Doctor at the end on the album. I was suspecting it was Claus Meine singing along with Gary when i only had the lp. Cause on the album there was no info that both Claus and Rudolf were playing/singing. I always loved this version!
Rudolf and Michael Schenker -- there was more musical genius in those siblings then in entire generations of other guitarists. For my money Rudolf is the greatest metal rhythm guitarist that ever walked the earth. Don't get me wrong, Rudolf can shred with the best of them and does in various Scorpions performances more often than they credited him for, but for whatever reason he seemed to prefer being the crunching metronome providing the backbone of the songs while others took the spotlight. I've felt that way for about 40 years and have never had any reason to revise that opinion. It's a shame that his brother Michael was so hard to work with, such that for a long time even his own brother couldn't stand to work with him. Great example is the Scorpions Lovedrive album, where Michael dropped in to record three songs before falling out with the group again, but those three songs are the best guitar work on the entire album. Choosing who you say is the "greatest guitarist ever" is largely a matter of personal preference but for sheer skill Michael Schenker is as good as anyone and better than 99% of them. I think that the solution for him was in having his own band where he could be the boss and have others follow his lead, and it damn well worked. For a more or less debut album, the first MSG album was brilliant. And not just for the blistering guitar work.
UFO were fantastic with or without a Schenker playing with them. Not to take away anything from Michael Schenker -- he's brilliant -- but some of UFO's best stuff was recorded without him in the lineup. As great as Schenker was, he was by all reports almost impossible to work with and there has never been a better guitarist cashiered from more great bands than Michael Schenker. I don't think he truly found his niche until he fronted his own band where he was the boss and everyone had to follow his creative lead. I know I'm making him sound like a monster but some people are just so talented they have to follow their own hearts and don't fit in well as part of a democracy, or another band with more than one creative lead. Michael Schenker did his best work fronting his own band. I first listened to MSG back in, I don't know, '81 or '82 I think, and I still listen to the band today. Which is how I ended up on this video.
@@josephledux8598 I love Mechanix & The Wild, Willing albums, both vastly underrated in my opinion. As for Schenkers best work being with MSG, I’d have to disagree, the first two albums were good but it’s been downhill ever since. Nothing rivals Lights Out, Obsession or the magnificent Strangers in the Night, the highlights of Schenker’s career.
@@garryl6594 I guess a better way to say it is that when he had his own band he could do his own thing without worrying about pissing off his band mates. As far as saying it was with his own band that he did his best guitar playing, no, not really. I think he did his best guitar work with UFO probably. But as far as the quality of the music produced, I'm a huge fan of the first two MSG albums. If I want to listen to Michael Schenker, I listen to MSG. If I just want to listen to him play with other people, I listen to Lovedrive or some UFO.
