Man, getting to follow Rainbow for over 40 years seems like such a special privilege. As much as I hate all of those comments saying I'm only X years old but at least I still listen to real music, I'm about to join that club for the first time. I'm 35, and I've been actively gigging on everything from sax and percussion all the way over to guitar and upright bass for just under 25 years now. That includes plenty of time spent playing all sorts of classical and jazz stuff that I never really had much interest in, but I've mainly spent that time bouncing around under the entire rock and roll umbrella all the way from rockabilly to thrash, doom, and death metal, and that's not a statement that's meant to pat myself on the back or jerk myself off or anything like that. It's just a bit of perspective about where exactly I'm coming from, and what caliber of musicians I aspire to play like. With that said, there isn't a person on this planet who could convince me that a stronger band has ever existed than Ronnie, Ritchie, and Cozy in Rainbow, and I have no problem applying that statement equally to both the Rising and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll lineups. Getting to look back at them now, it seems easy to say that despite the fact that all of their most talented contemporaries are pretty much universally considered to be the greatest rock bands of all time, Rainbow in 1977 was just absolutely untouchable, and they're still just as untouchable now. When you're talking about players like Ritchie and Cozy and comparing them to the other genuine all time greats, I think it's safe to say that at that level of playing and musicianship, it's always going to come down to taste, who and what you like, and whatever it is that sounds best to you. I'm not about to sit here spending my time casually arguing with people on the internet about how they're objectively the greatest guitarist and drummer of all time, together or individually. I'm usually not about to waste my time discussing music or art with anyone who even tries to view it objectively like that though because that just isn't how it works. When it comes to Ronnie though? He can turn me right into the worst kind of hypocrite without any kind of thought because he was just that damn good. He was a total anomaly who came out of the womb with all the natural talent and ability anyone could ever hope to have, and physically speaking, despite his size, he just so happened to be built absolutely fucking perfectly. He could have had an amazing 6+ decade career singing any style of music that he ever could have wanted to touch and stood with the giants. As far as all things rock and metal go though, and this isn't meant to take anything away at all from the Robert Plants and Freddie Mercurys of the world because honestly, how could you, but Ronnie was just a genuinely special, once in a lifetime talent who was the total package right down to the core. In my personal (and pretty obviously biased) opinion, those guys at their absolute best couldn't carry Ronnie's jock at his absolute worst. He was one of the rare few who just never lost it, and depending on your opinion, you might even say he was one of the even rarer few whose voice got better with age. Back in August of 2009, I was fortunate enough to be a handful of rows from the stage for what turned out to be Ronnie's second to last show ever. I've never seen anything like it, and I'm sure I never will. I knew it on that night just as surely as I know it on this night. The only thing I can think of that was more unbelievable than what he did onstage that night was finding out a few months later that he was doing everything he did that night while he was just unknowingly riddled with stage 4 cancer and actively dying in front of us. I still can't believe what I was fortunate enough to see him do less than 9 months before he passed away.

@@leedemkiw6085 Malmsteen is great but mainly Paganini arpeggios in the extreme, Blackmore is on a level many guitarists will never reach: tonally, emotionally, diverse and musicality. Blackmore was playing those shred box solos back in 1968.
@@Dibbdroid It was Ritchie playing Bach style Baroque runs, arpeggios that inspired Malmsteen in the first place. Ritchie is the complete package as you said. Jon said it vest, "Ritchie is 4 guitarists in one." Ritchie and Jan Akkerman were the original shredders and the best.
This was the best setting of Rainbow, 1977. I was 12 years old when I bought the record "On stage" with songs from this concert. I can listen to them today, as my children and theirs children do.
I saw Rainbow play live in Melbourne, Australia around this time. Awesome! Memory etched in my mind forever. I even caught his Stratocaster that he smashed up on stage then threw out into the audience, straight into my arms. I got jumped on by just about everyone and had the guitar yanked out of my hands. All I was left with was a tension spring from the back of the guitar. I still have it!

Blackmore was an idiot for leaving Purple for THIS abortion of a band. I was there at the time and thought it was OK..but now listening to it....garbage.
What a great drummer... And what a great band and group of musicians... Pronto

Rainbow was a band of true Music GODS, the Finest and Purest Classic Metal ever!
Yes they are but they wouldn't survive with a name like that called Rainbow nowadays especially in Florida Ron DeSantis would indict the group and deport them to another state
So much better than Led Zep, technically superior and much more exciting
what a band, what a dynamic/ energy

Dio, the voice of a god in the mighty rock temple. Long live your memory

Pity no Scots in the line up....
ganunese Alghulami Daisley is Australian and Dio is American.

THE best ever Rock Band line up ever......Period !
My good ..what a band..i dont think people realy understand howe tallantes theis guys realy are making a song like this..I know for a fact my self been playing this song hundred of times and it still make me get shivers during playing...Im so greatful th be able to grow up with Deep Purple and Rainbow..Two of the best Rock bands ever enterd a stage.
2020 and still one of the heaviest live performances I've seen!
You havent seen the support act. It was AC/DC and they were even more intense. So that people went away when Rainbow played 4 or 5 songs. Not here in Munich, but it happened a lot and Ritchie was wondering what it is and the band was watching AC/DC with open mouths. Dont get me wrong, I love both bands
@@ulrichprieser6698 I've gotta reply here, sorry I do like acca Dacca,But...Rainbow with this line up blows ac/DC out of the water, the improv,all-round musicianship ,versatility in songs, solos etc.Dio ,Blackmore and band are brutality untouchable here. Not even close...
@@ulrichprieser6698 AC/DC was support in 1976. Go away and listen to Deutschland Tournée triple live from 1976 tour. You bought into some bullshit, no way AC/DC topped them and the crowds were with Rainbow all the way.
Now I'am 67 but hear this sang by deep purple I remind me of my beautifull Memories with my Girl friend..❤️😍

What a great band this lineup of Rainbow was! I was lucky to see them twice live, their first tour and later the Rainbow rising tour. They were great, Long live rock and roll!

what a masterful performance. Ritchie Blackmore looked pretty happy! as he should ... this is an incredible band.
the best band. Incredible and irreplaceables.
God I miss Ronnie😢
Im going on record. This is truly one of if not the best Metal songs ever ! Done by true genius musicians- Blackmore Powell & Dio.
Awesome.
This is a kind of music that I first listened when I was still in my secondary school . Still listen to this band until now 2021 . Now I'm 51 .
me too, Rainbow was the band I saw life, when I was about 15. Now I am 53. 😃
I'm 65 and I'm still here!
Ronnie what an amazing singer.I swear I have never heard a better vocalist in any genre of music.
Only the Master, Mr. Blackmore can make a Strat sound that full and angry. What a band. One of my favorites. Incredible performance.
I disagree. Malmsteen is a way more aggressive player with way better tone, chops and vibrato.
Jon said it vest, "Ritchie is 4 guitarists in one."
Ritchie and Jan Akkerman were the original shredders and the best.
It sounded like a whole lot of noise to me - it gave me a headache listening to it.

So many great bands in the 70s era.

Just watch how freely Blackmore plays his riffs... No other guitar player can match him.
No disrespect but have you ever seen Eddie Van Halen play? Steve Vai? Joe Satriani?
