    - How I Use Phantom Luts | FAQ | A7siii footage -
    This video is a follow up to my previous phantom lut review video. In this video we cover a lot of FAQ about the phantom luts by joel famularo. We cover phantom lut related topics like how to expose slog 3, which picture profiles to use, and how to use the phantom luts in post. I truly appreciate all of the support on my previous phantom lut video that I made earlier this year. I hope you find this phantom lut video helpful as we color grade some a7siii footage.

    Hi Brendon! I loved the tutorial but was hoping you can clarify what the order of the changes should be (lut first, then effects, or vice versa). In Tyler Stalman's video "How to Color Grade in Final Cut Pro" he says the video effects are applied in order so should be color changes, and then Lut. At 19:04 youhave your lut applied first, and then your color changes comes after it.
    I'm not an expert, but trying to learn how to color grade and so I'm watching a ton of YT videos. Can you help confirm which is the correct order?

    • @brendonleerogers1794

      Yeah it’s a mistake. It should be the color correct first before the lut.

    Very informative video and it was cool to see your workflow since I also use FCP. I've been just getting into colour grading, LOG and LUTS recently this weekend so I'm watching a ton of videos to see how others do it first. Nice to see you are a big fan of Eterna because I think I am going to focus heavily on mastering Eterna before dabbling with other LUTS. I liked your video and subscribed to your channel!

I'm using some A7iv footage shot at S Cinetone, fcpx is set to uncompressed 10bit 4.2.2 is there something I'm doing wrong? Also have you used phantom LUTs with HLG footage?

    Do the in camera LUTS need to be over exposed? This is the issue I’m having. For Slog3 I’m usually between 1.7-2 stops over and footage comes out nice. However, when I add a preview LUT in camera I’m really not able to get an accurate image because of they over exposure. How do you deal with this? Are you using an SLOG3 lut or rec 709 to preview or do you apply a creative LUT? Thanks

    • @brendonleerogers1794
      @brendonleerogers1794  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No particular reason tbh. You could use it in the info tab if you wanted to.
      Actually recently been using an adjustment layer and just dragging it across the timeline to be even more efficient and editing the clips that way

      @@brendonleerogers1794 thank you! the reason I ask is because I think the order of LUT and additional color correction in the video effects tab matter?. At least from everything I read and seen in my projects. I Was hoping to replace my current Sony slog3 -> rec709 lut with these phantom luts because they look incredible!
      So my workflow would be as follows
      1) phantom LUT to get me out of slog3 over to rec709(done in info tab)
      2) cc with fcp to make sure exposure/contrast/skin tones/colors are correct across all my shots after edit.
      3) when a project calls for something more special, I'll add adjustment layer for a "grade" (maybe using another phantom Film look at very low opacity)
      Thanks again!

    • @brendonleerogers1794
      @brendonleerogers1794  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. The exposure/color adjustments should be done before the lut effect. I believe fcpx does it automatically.

      Correct it’s just an artistic preference. You can expose for skin and background may get blown out but if you’re trying to have subject your focus than it would be ok. But you could also expose for the background protect your highlights but then your subject would be underexposed making a silhouette. There’s really no right or wrong way. Just up to you.
      I’ve used the lut both over and underexposed and noise is also not an issue in either scenario

      @@brendonleerogers1794 MY VIDEOS HAVE BEEN REALLY DARK LATELY WHICH LOOKS DONT REALLY GOOD. I VE SET IT TO 70 AND RECORDING AT+-0 . ALSO I DONT LOOK AT THE ZEBRA NO MORE AND THEYRE VERY DARK ITS SO FRUSTRATING. I WASTED ALL MY VIDEO WITH REALLY DARK IMAGES AND FOOTAGE. SO WITH YOUR CONCEPT , DO I JUST IGNORE THE OVER AND UNDER EXPOSURE NUMBER AND JUST FOCUS ON THE ZEBRA? AND MAKE SURE THE ALL BACKGROUND HAVE ZEBRA AT 70 IF I DONT WANT IT TO BE DARK AND UNDER EXPOSED? ALSO WHAT IF I DONT HAV A PERSON AS A SUBJECT? LIKE SAY THE BEACH OR THE MOUNTAIN AND THE SUN IN THE BACKGROUND DURING SUNSET? I DID THIS YESTERDAY AT THE PIER , AND EVERYTHING WAS SO DARK. I WAS JUST MAKING SURE IT WAS AT 0 AND NOT LOOKING AT THE ZEBRA , WHICH WAS A BIG MISTAKE.

      I have a video talking about exposing slog 3
      th-cam.com/video/HD7V8rnUgFI/w-d-xo.html
      That’s unfortunate to hear. Typically outside with no human subject in the shot I have zebras set to 95 and expose just under 95.
      My main piece of advice is to ignore the light meter reading. Depending on what your filming in the frame, can have a huge impact on your light meter reading.
      My first go to is to have the gamma display assist on in the flip screen and get the exposure close to what I am seeing with my eye.
      Then if I’m shooting a subject I turn on zebras to see how the zebras are landing on the face. Making sure I’m not clipping the skin tones. Same concept for landscape shots/ establishing shots.
      Expose based off of your eye and the display monitor and then use zebras to dial it in a little finer.
      Most the time if it’s fast paced filming I’ll only get a chance to expose based on the flip screen. And it gets me to where I want majority of the time.

      There’s not an official lut for a74? But I’ve used a7siii lut for the a74 since sensors are pretty much same

    I have the phantom luts they’re beautiful. Do they have rec709 built in or do you have to add it at some point?

    I wasted my money on these. There is no way to adjust the effect of these on footage as the all convert to rec709. The looks are all nice but very intense and there is nothing you can do about it. The neutral one is decent if you just want some usuable picture with almost no work. But it will be a very generic look.

      In DaVinci Resolve you must use the "Key Output" tool (and another tool that I forgot the name of) to adjust the intensity of the LUT.
