    Thanks for the video Alex! I remember as a little boy when I moved to live with my aunt in Mexico. She had a massive 20-25 foot guava tree. I remember playing around there and having a plenty of guava in my diet. My cousin and I use to make cast nets and we would catch small fish, shrimp and crawfish and the occasional turtle.
    There was also this natural springs we used to go to that had pools built along side and seeing the thousands of little fish that lived in the springs and pool. They would even pick at your toes if you were still enough.

    I have a question-
    Can we use fresh (Green) guava leaves 🍃 and boil them for few minutes and add in tank with boiled water (after water gets cool).
    Or First let them dry in sun light for 3-4 days but after 3-4 days they will be green but fresh but green not brown because they not die on tree right.
    So pls suggest me what should I do .
    For neon Tatras.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You need to dry em but you can place them in an oven on 150f. Or 50c whatever your lowest temp on the oven is...and slowly dry them in a couple hours while slow cooking some stew or something. The issue is, our aquariums arent big enough to break down fresh green chlorophyll in the leaves without causing eutrophication and or high ammonia/biological debris... in nature it washes away usually. But you can also lay them in the sun or near a radiant heater for a few days... heat or UV light will break down the largest compounds that cause trouble

      Yes id dry them. Its best if they die on the tree and naturally fall or get picked? Because all the chlorophyll is taken back to the tree. Where as cutting leaves, The green ones will have more chlorophyll, which just rots and adds nitrates and ammonnia in small amounts to your tank

    • @Fishtory

      You generally want to use red, brown or fallen leaves in fall because they start to change their chemical makeup and there is less organic material to essentially rot when they've turned for the season.... so I'd say most trees native to non-tropical climates... you want to wait for them and also boil if they're covered in dark black white or brown spots...or fuzzy mold. Where as almond leaves never shift like that and you can slowly sundry them...jackfruit, banana etc

    I have never tried adding dried leaves into my tanks. I can get dried guava leaves from a local online seller. I read from one of the comments below, that it is better to boil the leaves, if we are not sure how the leaves were obtained. I have a question, if I boil the leaves before adding them to the tanks, will the leave still be effective in growing infusoria?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it will still grow some infusoria but the source of the tiny organisms will have to come from some other place ...so perhaps use a few scoops of existing tank water or plants/wood from an existing tank, since nearly all tanks over a year old, will have it.
      Boiling them also breaks apart some molecules and compounds that sooth the fish...Like tannins. However you can be nearly assured that you won't introduce algae or some other pest, to your tanks...it's a bit of a gamble often times..but I say. Why not flash boil a batch or two and then if you want to try fresh dried leaves you csn

      ok upon further research, I have found that avocado plants contain persin which is toxic to a lot of things, it seems fairly hit or miss as some people have successfully fed their plecos and guppies avocado skin where as some poor guy lost a lot of pleco fry after offering avocado, there is nothing really about the leaves themselves but they are slightly toxic to dogs and cats so I will avoid the risk. Real shame because botanicals are impossible to find at my LFS cause of Brexit and all the leaves outside are very damp from the recent storms and classic british weather.

    Curiosity question Alex, does the Gourami have any relationship to the African Leaf Fish? Google searching hasn't helped me much, guessing no they aren't but see similar profiles in the body shape etc.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a big sense...yes, recently- no. Both are in the class Actinopterygii, but most boney fish are. They definitely evolved in extremely similar ecosystems/ biomes and it is a major case of convergent evolution over millions of years.
      The leaf fish in the Amazon and Africa are also very very similar. Their greek/latin naming is even super similar with polycentrus and polyoptoris being their names a continent away!
      However... the Leopard Bushfish is 100% gourami related! Look like a leaf, breathes air and is an ambush predator of opportunity. In fact all those leaf fish even swim like a drifting leaf, sort of hanging in the water, twirling with currents and then attacking downward, like gouramis.
      Great question!
