  • WHY DOES MY AQUARIUM SMELL SO BAD?! ( Quick Explanation is in the first 10:21 minutes.) Then The Chemistry and biology begin!
    The complex science behind the lovely smells of rotten eggs, sour milk, ammonia, (urine smell), dead fish, rotting plants, fermentation, and even worse in your fish or shrimp tank. From Sulfur, to Trimethylamine_N-oxide there are smells we all recognize as bad news for our hobby...or perhaps just life in general. but we will be discussing the chemicals that cause the most common and pungent smells: Sulfuric games, ammonia, Trimethylamine_N-oxide, putrescine, and the ever so lovely "cadaverine". !

    This is something I have been trying to convince my parents of; that all smells in an aquarium are not bad. Some are actually signs of health, like the fresh earth smell.

    My local aquarium and the aquarium my parents cared for in my childhood, always smell like a fish market. Not fishy, but the smell of fresh fish.
    Mine smells like a new bag of potting soil.
    The cleanest tanks without plants or adequate substrate, always smell of fish water (unless they use some carbon to remove it).

    Thank you for your video. I was doing way overdue maintenance to my axolotl tank and noticed bubbles coming up from my substrate. My tank has minimal substrate due to them being axolotls but it is there and different. I'm glad you say it's an issue but not deadly. I dont have a smell but I have bubbles. Going to just make a priority to do more water changes and find a way to get more plants that they won't destroy.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    OH MY GOSH I LOVE ALEX!
    ✋ I'm here, after worrying for my daughter's Betta Ruby Red, as her 3 gal (I know, laugh it up y'all. But we out here and we doin' it) aquarium has a slight "merk" to it. I'd recently done a half water change/introduced new aquarium swimmies (decor) and suddenly was met with the smell of soil and earthy goodness! Removed the filter, disassembled, super cleaned in hot water and good elbow grease.
    🤔💭🐠☠️😮🏃🏼‍♀️
    I'm not entirely sure if the aquarium is in good, safe standing.....but after discovering Alex ...I'll tell you what I do know........
    Now I want a 500 gal tank and to learn all the things!!!

    The art! The science! The biology! THE PASSION!!! THE ALEX!!!!

    Now, I'll close with a request that if you've read this far ....please send positive vibes to Ruby Red.
    He's happy and swim flappy flapping his tailfins as usual....I just don't know what the "merk" is.

    Geosmin is present in higher quantities in beets as well. I believe cooking them reduces it as well, if memory serves.

    Question. How do you cap your substrate / sand without clouding up your water in tank? I have a 55 gal that I originally set up temporarily. Alex you are the best! My new 1" goodies,2" sand aquaruim, the sand went all black and sulfide bubbles under the sand, and I do a propper freak-out! It's my first tenk, so I had to buy plants and most(stem) didn't have roots and died. Now I know I needed more growing roots and sould not worry to much, thanks. My sand is quite fine. Is this bad? Can I plant well rooted plants into this black sulfer loaded sand,will the roots survive. Not sure if my soil mix had enough good microbes in it, the pond I got the mud part from looked pretty dead(yellow clay).

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You May want to plant above the super rich Substrate and let the roots kind of search out the nutrients they want... the whole root death thing happens a lot with father fish tanks it seems. I think the nutrients are just too rich for plants not in co2/ high high light and water change.... which he doesn't promote ( but he could and perhaps should, with how rich the Substrate is on a lot of home diy or his own mix of Substrate).
      Anyway, it may take some time and floating plants are your friend to clear up nutrients leaching into the water as well. Hope this helps

    Thank you. This is really helpful. In my case the aquarium itself smells fine but the water I remove during a water change smells like rotten eggs (esp when I gravel vacuum). Is that good (like, I'm removing it from the tank)? Or is that bad (it's out of hand if producing a noticeable smell, period). The fish seem ok, both before and after water changes...these are regular maintenance water changes not responding to a specific problem. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might have!

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You may have a bacterial growth in the substrate that needs some aeration (maybe more plants, so their roots will break up any patches of rot or bacteria, but also aerate it... Malaysian trumpet snails are great for that task also!). But you probably don't need to worry too much, if it's just when you disturb the substrate.
      If the tank is very old, then you may want to add new substrate soil or even just a few root tabs to get things churning and metabolizing on a microbiome level.
      Best wishes, cheers!

    My fish tank smells almost made me vomit after they layyed eggs

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely a large bacterial bloom in a layer that is cut off from the tank's oxygenated water or air in general... and it is poop condensed and molding/rotting and being eaten by bacteria that fart/ excrete co2, methane and sulfur. I'd add some deep rooted plants and root tabs...also some Malaysian trumpet snails to aerate and cycle the deeper soils....or save the fish aside in clean waters and replace that substrate. All together if you want.
      Best if luck to you, my friend

    Hello, thanks for this informative video!
    I have goldfish and today I changed 50% of water (+water conditioner) and I'm little bit worried now because it smells ,,fishy,, just like fish. I'm scared it's ammonia or any bad bacteria for my lovely fish.
    Also, I don't have real plants (my sweeties would eat them lol) so I don't have the ,,water cycle,,
    Can you please tell me if the fishy smell is dangerous?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Generally it is not harmful. Goldfish produce a slime that can smell very foul. It has proteins and lipids that decay over time and make a protective layer, but part of the way it builds that layer, is made of dead cells from the surface tissues of the fish.
      Ammonia is acrid, and smells more like urine or windex/window/toilet cleaner (not bleach based ones).
      So test their water, but you could also toss in a bunch of duckweed or possibly a large Amazon sword/large anubias ...the goldfish sometimes won't eat the tougher leaves...and they will eat duckweed, but it's good for them and If they don't eat it all, it'll suck up any extra ammonia or nitrates that are naturally produced via fish waste

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it smells like Brussels sprouts (farts or poop), then you may have plants rotting on the filter intake or duckweed and other organic debris on the sides of the tank. But if your filters are clean, and the water is all healthy during testing, you should be okay- it may just be going through a phase of maturing. I wouldnt worry unless any ammonia or high nitrates (over 60 to 80 ppm) are showing up. Best of luck!

    I have kept my goldfish in a non planted tank. Once it happened that the tank smelled strongly fishy, and then we noticed a male goldfish chasing a female one. The fishes looked like they were mating.The tank remained smelly the whole day. It subsided the next day. Now we get a fishy smell once a while but it isn't that strong.. And goes of on its own after some time. Is it normal? Should I be worried?

      @raphansari276 yes as long as it doesnt smell like poop. If it smells like that, it may just be too old and rottene to be useful in a small glass box of water. (Unlike in nature, where theres lots of room for gases and rotting plant debris to break down and disperse)

    So. Alex: can you come over and help me with my aquarium? (😂doesn’t hurt to ask..)
    I don’t know what I’m doing and I don’t want to hurt my fish or a stinky house- I am re using a beautiful hallow trunk purchased for my son 4 years ago. He was too young and lost interest in the hobby or maybe it was too much for an 9 year old to deal with. ( the tank was a gift from my husband- )a year later and I took apart his swamp and I couldn’t bear to toss the driftwood so I set it in the sun on a cement wall on the hottest days of Los Angeles summer- for a couple weeks. Then I stored it i our garage. I planed on using it in my garden but forgot about it.
    I got into aquariums late last year and i wanted to set up a 20 gal long dirt planted tank for oto’s dwarf Cory’s pea puffers many mystery snails ( do mystery snail make water stink? and a few guppies and I remembers that huge hallow trunk the shy oto’s would love so I soaked it for a few weeks and I boiled it in a tamale pot. My tank has been running about 4 months but I have been noticing that there’s a slight sulfer/putrifucation smell coming from the wood. My ph went from 8 to 6.4 and the water feels slimy. The water was dark due to dirt and wood (I don’t mind the tea color- I added a sachet of seachem purguen and the water was crystal clear but the pyrogen turned black in 2 weeks. I’m now regenerating my purguen sacget but it now smells slighkt chemically or plastic.. so I’m soaking in strong solution of water and dechloronator. I’m worried about adding back to tank only to poison my fish. My main concern and questions are - why does my wood smell and should I remove it- can it be cleaned or is it trash?
    I really appreciate any help from anyone ❤🫶🏻👆🐡🥵😷💩

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is your issue? Just the smell? It's probably due to a lack of bacteria diversity breaking down the fish poop...or could also be a mold....or if your substrate is sand it could be sulphur/methane gases...
      What does it smell like, how old is the tank and what are the fish in it?
      Plants really help reduce all the various problems that arise in aquariums. Get a bucket of your tank water and rinse out your filter sponges in that water (if the smell is coming from them). This will get the mud and excess fish waste and organics out of the filter

    Hello I wanted to know why my aquarium water smells like chlorine or more closely to pool water could there be a similar smell to something else?
    So I bought it yesterday its 12 liters plastic one. I cleaned the inside cleaned the rocks and ornament with cold water till water was clear I have no plants, I've placed them in the aquarium filled it with lukewarm water put in the filter sponge cartridge one.
    I've put in the water treatment liquid in the one that takes out chlorine as instructed but may be tiny bit more, turned on the filter and noticed that the water smells like pool water it was on for all night and still is on and still smells like it.
    My aquarium is for tropical fish I've not setup the heater yet as I've got no fish yet what could be causing it?
    Is the liquid not helping or something else?
    Thanks.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So Cycling a tank is going to truly take a month If not longer. If it's only a few days old. The plastic parts may just smell like chemicals.
      I'd need to know your ammonia, tds, gh/kh , ph, and nitrates/nitrites levels to be of any more assistance, I'm afraid to say.
      It could be that your city uses chloramine and not just chlorine...call them and ask... if it's not just chlorine, then I would guess that you are smelling the chloramine turning back into chlorine gas and evaporating out of the tank
      .sad only time full fixes that issue
