Ok folks. Steer clear of those tyres. After 2 weeks of use and roughly 100 miles the tyres hit the self destruct button. A huge delamination and bulge on the rear tyre has ended things. Spend your money elsewhere.

in 2001 I was given a Scott Purgatory by my parents for commuting around town to work (I was at Uni). It was never high end, and I've owned many "good" bikes since including my current Giant TCR road bike, but of all the bikes I've ever owned it has the sentimental value, and is in near perfect condition - it is also smooth as butter to ride (having replaced the pogo stick it came with, with a basic rigid fork).
When I changed that I also bought some decent Shimano V brakes to replace the stock ones and was shocked by the difference in stopping power and over time it has run on lots of rubber - my favorite were a set of Specialized Fat Boys (really skinny slicks) that worked great for commuting, but had zero grip anywhere but tarmac -- originally I thought I'd go disc too, but for a run about I don't see the point to the cost given the V brakes now work so well.
When I find some I like it will get some mudguards -- love that I still have it 20 years later and it's so :"as new" that I reckon if I ever have grandkids they might be watching one of your vids for resto inspiration :-)

Problem Solvers sells a Fender Flute to help get fenders down close to the tire i. Situations like yours. Also Surly sells Bridge Club forks that are about an inch shorter than the Ogre one, and you can then still put in an oversized front tire (or even a 27.5 front wheel) to get the height and front end cushioning to both be decent despite being rigid.

Nice little build, do yourself a favour though and grease every bolt that you used to assemble the bike. (Your future self will thank you) Also when you install the brake calipers, a little trick is to grab the brake lever whilst the bolts are loose and then tighten them, that way it's centered.

Yeah I know how to centre brakes ;) These ones were being difficult, especially the rear... maybe the adapter. I'd disagree with greasing up ALL bolts though. Some, like brake and crank bolts need a bit of loctite applie ideally.

My brother installed a disc brake adapter like that back in the day. Proved a great way to snap the canti mount off of his Rocky Mountain Altitude Team Only. Ouch. Don't do it.

Damn that’s a shame! I’ll still be giving it a go. It’s a steel frame so repairs won’t be too bad 😉

Guess selling it now is out of the question since the new mods probably doubled the price.

    • @MonkeyShred

It had zero interest before anyway so… might just have to ride it for a bit then split it. Who knows.

That'd be great - If I hadn't already painted the bike - If I had a welder - If I had electricity in the garage - If I had the right training in welding.
