Using the Nicolai Gedda version, on you-tube, I wrote an English version for a mezzo-soprano voice, the role being for Adah Isaacs Menken. I was hoping to have the musical be ready in time for the 150th anniversary of Menken playing Mazeppa in early San Francisco...but it did not happen, despite Michael Tilson Thomas being an actual fan of Adah Isaacs Menken. I adapted from a number of public domain era composers, including, not surprisingly, Franz Liszt himself, who wrote a Mazeppa etude and a longer Mazeppa symphonic piece...
