I attended one of Carlos Berganzi's last performances of "Elizir" in the USA - it was a performance by the Baltimore Opera. At intermission, it was announced to the audience that Carlos was suffering from voice problems but was going to sing the work anyway. I tried to, but couldn't enjoy it as much, because I was worrrying about Carlos and his voice, and hope it wasn't going to crack, or something.
@@heizukowsky nah that's a c. As in his rendition of the whole aria, it's perhaps a little scoopy (the consonant pitched slightly lower - I don't mind it tbh) but definitely the note is C.
@@heizukowsky ok now I see your confusion... It's an alternative that (rightly or wrongly) some tenors have employed to allow them to take the phrase to a high A (as he does), instead of the G (the same peak as the earlier phrase). You're quite right about the rhythm, of course, which is changed for the same reason.
Pretty, but even a leggiero or tenore di grazia must address the appoggio and passaggio in the classical technique, otherwise too close to pop singing. You gave a little in the first chiedo and the last. But essentially ignored it throughout the aria. It is what separates from each other. But pretty.
@@scotrule6128 He has a brilliant point actually. He's got a great idea of bel canto and sings well, but yes a little on the open side in the passagio. He narrows more at certain points and you can hear the difference. Perhaps thats what Danny was referring to.

It seems that this young man is doing a bang-up job in this master class. This is a learning environment ... "progress not perfection". I enjoyed hearing this process a great deal! I can't imagine buying a record of Caruso either. I have this theory that all these singers from bygone eras weren't nearly as good as we make them out to be, and we would be quite disappointed if we could hear what they really sounded like. Take the following recording for example, ( th-cam.com/video/y9sDs5I-dTQ/w-d-xo.html ) I find Caruso's tempo painfully slow and he takes enormous liberties with the rhythm practically destroying the rhythmic pulse in places. There is a difference on the two 'di puo non chiedo'. The first starts on B natural - the second on C. Common mistake.

I only needed to hear his speaking voice to know there were tensions in the back of the tongue and that he would sing in head voice, and lack chest.
Pop voice for opera , only mix singing
No chest. Boring.

Who is that "expert" Fisher? Never seen nor heard of.... tenor would probably be good for Broadway although they have better high notes there.....
Great instrument in his voice, but the technique is poorly focused (high larynx, nasal voice, neck tension)
High larynx tongue root elevation is the only way to sing full tenor squillo. His nasal port is closed. You are healing his ciaro scuro with palate
