This is a rare clip showing perhaps the most famous prima ballerina of the modern era, Natalia Makaova, and one of her favorite partners, Ivan Nagy, dancing the White Swan Pas de Deux from "Swan Lake."
They are accompanied on-stage by violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Lynn Harrell.
This was performed on May 13, 1984 as part of a 100th anniversary celebration at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Ms. Makarova was forty-four at the time of this performance. Ivan Nagy had retired six years earlier, in 1978, at the age of thirty-five, but was coaxed by Makarova to return for this one performance.
My favorite ballerina! Epitome of grace, strength, athleticism, emotion and a great sense of humor too!
Mine too. Something about her that just appeals me more than most ballerinas out there. Her techniques and musicality may not be some people's cup of tea (and I can see that) but from what I have seen, her performances somehow always move me.
These two were so wonderful together. I feel privileged to have seen them.
Natalia’s breath and movement were one. The flow was incomperable. Her presence was remarkable. She felt the music down to her blood. So light, not a burden on her partners.
Ivan was wonderful, too. His dancing was lovely and correct, his acting terrific, and his partnering, sublime!
And Itzhak is no slouch on that violin, either!
❤
Can watch a million different swan queens and ultimately end up returning to the source. All hail Queen of swan queens Natalia Makarova.
I so agree with you - Makarova is the 'benchmark'for me and I believe she always will be. Although I must say Natalia Osipova is emerging and is showing signs of being a wonderful Swan queen in the latter part of the 21st Century and the beginning of the 22nd Century. She is sensitive in Act 2 and formidable as Odile and where appropriate, she dances with joy in her heart :) .The 1982 production of Swan Lake by the Royal Ballet and filmed at Covent Garden with Natalia Makarova and Odette/Odile and Sir Anthony Dowell as Siegfried is a very hard production to be better than. The production is the 'benchmark'' for me. IMO only :)
Totally agree!she is the best Swan Queen🌠
Me too! She is everything I love! She IS the Queen.

Mesmerising. Stunning.
*Best version Ever.*
Makarova gives you what you don't even know you deserve in the role of Odette. She is a league of her own.
Sheer perfection. No one has ever come close
Fantástica bailarina!!!!
I saw these two dancers in a full length Swan Lake performance in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1974. And I saw her again, same place, same ballet in 1976 with Anthony Dowell. Second row from the front. Am I lucky or what?!
Yes, veryyyyy 😍
Epic
Few things in life are perfect. This performance was perfection.
Natalia Makarova, the greatest ballerina in the dance's history! What a feast for the eyes.
BREATHTAKING!!! I can watch this over and over again and it still gives me goosebumps! This IS art!
How beautiful to watch Makarova and the late, great, Naggy, dance this role together again. He was one of the most perfect partners, for a ballerina to have. My father David Blair, staged, directed, choreography, for ABT, IN 1967, Swan Lake in four acts. How well I remember most of my childhood spent at the Met, watching it grow, to a first rate ballet company, with the formidable, Lucia Chase, at it's helm! x
It must have been wonderful!
What a wonderful production your father staged for abt! It was one of my favorite productions! God bless!
Wow! How exciting for you!!
Makarova has the most beautiful, fluid arms I've ever seen on a ballerina. Perfection.
I adore Makarova, but it was Plisetskaya who was known for her arms! Not that they both can't be, of course ...
Makarova’s arms are perfect. But you might also enjoy watching Viktoria Tereshkina, in the Mariinsky.
I watched her dance this piece on tv when i was a teenager...a quarter of a century on I 'm just as mesmerised.💗🌸🌹⛅
She's exquisite! The way she moves and has full control of her body is breathtaking.
Itzhak, thank you for playing the modulation just before the cello comes in, in tune. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I think Natalia is my favorite ballerina 🩰 So much passion and she seems like she’s floating. Her arm movements are beautiful, showing lots of feeling. Just beautiful to watch 🥰
Pure artistry and technique. So much passion when she dances Swan Lake with Nagy.
Makarova, the ultimate ballerina of the past 100 years. Nagy, the princely partner, look how well he ACTS during this. At 44 and 41, they achieved near perfection.
Perhaps the best ballerina of the 20th century,,,,,thanx fer sharing.
Watching in 2020..pure perfection!!!
OMG, OMG! this is why i love ballet. speechless. viewing this after having experience in ballet, the artistry is unparalelled, OMG
As an ABT ballet children's company member under Nancy Clement's tutorial, meeting Makarova and Misha while dancing first position in "Etudes" will be one of my greatest accomplishments besides my daughter,my husband and playing Carnegie hall. Thanks Mom for ballet lessons and Thanks Dad for believing in me and being in my four corners.
SAW HIM LIVE JUST ONCE ,HERE IN ITALY DOING BAYADERE IN1977 .WAS REALLY A FINE DANCER.
Absolutely riveting performance. We are so lucky to be able to see this! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Wonderful performance, Love Swan Lake with Natalia Makarova Dancing it. Beautiful. Her dancing partner was perfect for her, he was too very graceful. Natalia has always been my special Swan Lake ballerina. x
Ivan is such underrated talent. So much it BORDERLINES on criminal. This Hungarian-born Primer Danseur Noble had such a brief career. SO brief. He was a prince. The man looked like a prince. He was as a prince. The kind of Prince Charming that belonged in a fairy tale. In a little girl's most wishful of fantasies. I myself wish he would've stuck around... just a little. Natasha herself said, "It is sad, a great loss. Ivan is in top form. He is quitting far too soon."
--Sincerest, Dane Youssef
Makarova herself described Nagy as a "wonderful partner," and she had been partnered by the very best!
Totally agree! He was fantastic. I was so lucky to see him dance many roles when I was a little girl. Why did he retire so early? Injuries?
@@marygoodson4920spine issues I think.
Natalia Makarova is the first person I saw dance Swan Lake (recording of Royal Ballet’s version) and she remains my all time favorite swan. Her grace and expression fill every cell of her being. So riveting to watch.
She honestly remains the best ever to do ballet. She seems almost made for the art and the sport. Anyone who's had the honor and privilege of seeing her perform believes so. That petite little body and frame, and yet those long, willowy limbs just seem to go on forever and ever.... And yet, she was not given the honor of "Prima Ballerina Absolutta" This is not just a silly oversight. This is not just moronic, it is criminal! Natasha Forever.
... And Ever, Dane Youssef
Can anyone even approach Makarova for beauty and perfection of line? She really stands alone.
This is one of my all time favorite performances of Swan Lake. Makarova is an exquisite Odette and Ivan Nagy was a perfect partner. At the end he placed two wreaths at her feet. It was wonderful. Thanks for posting this clip. Plus how great to have Itzak Perlman and Lynn Harrell Playing the Adagio. Doesn't get much better than that. This should be remastered on Blue-Ray for future generations.
BRAVISSIMI AMBEDUE. BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
I had to chuckle when I read a comment left by John Meyer about the "preserving Tchaikovsky's musicality as they maintained the "measured" pace required by the dancers...." It's probably significant to remember one very important thing. When Tchaikovsky composed his score, it was the intent that it be "danced". It isn't just a concert piece to be performed in a recital hall - it's a work that is the a part of a complete theatrical work - a sharing of artistic forms so that ALL of the viewer/listener's senses are stimulated - but particularly it's one to be embodied by a human form.
That may be, but it has to be remembered that the dance was choreographed to the music that had already been composed, not the other way around. Makarova was famous for the slow tempos she preferred in adagios, but today's dancers take them even slower. As slow as this adagio is, it is currently being performed at a tempo that makes it a full minute longer. At some point, not only do the notes cease to have any meaningful connections with each other, but the steps themselves lose any type of phrasing. Then the "dance" becomes just a series of poses. There has to be a balance, where the dancers can dance to the best of their ability, but that the musicians are also playing the music beautifully.
Thank you so much for sharing this priceless joule. What a luxury to have such an artist combo in performance. ;)
Google translate of the above: "Natasha is just brilliant!"
the first time I saw this performace back in the day, it made me cry it was so beautiful.
It was and is a great performance by the divine Makarova, back and the day when I first saw it and now. She is sublime.
The remnants of Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo performed in Los Angeles & I saw Nagy at that time. There were several short ballets in the program & this was before L.A. even had their Music Center. Maybe late 1950s in Shrine Aud.. Ivan Nagy was a great dancer & this video is a treasure for me to accidently "find". Thanks.
The Gold Standard for Odette/Odile! Perfection.
When Ivan hung up his tights and slippers for good, "Natasha" looked at it as a real loss--for her and for all of ballet. "Ivan is in top form. He is quitting far too soon." Gelsey Kirkland took to him as a personal favorite also. Huh. "Natasha" wanted him back that badly, eh? Right before his death, Gelsey asked him guest-teach at her school/company. I hope her reunion with Ivan was just as grand as this. A fitting "Swan Song" for a true prince...
Muy bueno !!!
The most expressive quality I have seen since Margot Fonteyn, from Natalia - beautiful
Very beautiful! She has wings, because it's impossible to wave your arms as she does.
I really like this video. thanks.
Bravo super dance
WOW!!! I loved watching you 100%
Thank you for posting this, John.
It is a remarkable performance. The whole evening was amazing.
Ok how beautiful was the violin solo? It would not be the same if it weren't for the heartbreaking music.
Quedé conmovido 😢
completaly agree l saw live only once mr nagy ,was here in italy in 1977 he was solor in shadow act of bayaderka and was magnificent .off course as all the ABT males of that period was overshadowed due the presence of misha.
Lynn, you and Itzhak did a wonderful job preserving Tchaikovsky's musicality as you maintained the "measured" pace required by the dancers.
It was a bravura performance all around. -John
DIVINE

5:41 my God!!! Pure magic
BRAVO!
danggg makarova and itzhak pearlman, what a play i die
Perefection!
So nice! ! However, seems Yuanyuan Tan is even more beautiful!
Maybe it is because Makarova is Yuanyuan's biggest influence and inspiration 😊
Maravilhosa
Was there ever a dance as passionate as Makarova?
Never. The artistry of ballet seems to be disappearing. It's all high legs and super turns. Such a shame.
Tempo at the beginning a little rushed I think, for Makarova's liking - she was always one of those ballerinas to favour agonizingly slow tempos in this - and looking a little stiff in the back, still a vintage Makarova performance. It's always fascinating to watch how dancers and musicians work out the carpentry so that the music is played at a tempo that both the dancers favour or can manage, and one that is as close as possible to the composer's original markings. Beautiful work by all.
Wonderful performance! I'm playing this solo in the pit next month and looking forward it. Just curious, did you and Mr. Perlman you mutes? I'm thinking I won't use my mute so I project a little easier.
what is the heigth of Natalia?
Makarova's exquisite performance is breathtakingly beautiful and emotionally captivating, as is the stunning partnering of Nagy. This is a once- in- a lifetime performance. I usually love Itzhak Perlman's playing, but here I feel it is a bit too schmaltzy and it seems to override the performance of the dancers, rather than support it.
As I said in the description for this video, Perlman had to slow down the tempo tremendously to accommodate the dancers, and I think that significant change in tempo ended up altering the "vibe" that you pick up when you listen just to the music.
Only three words to say it all: She is Odette!
Does anyone have a video of the complete evening that this performance was taken from. I've been looking everywhere. Please post a possible source. Many thanks
I recorded most of this performance on VHS tape, back in 1984. I digitized it and then applied digital restoration techniques to make it look better, because in 1984 we were all still using first-generation VHS recorders.
Here is a list of what is on the DVD that I created:

Wonder why they didn’t include the other swans?
wow.
Ivan was a beautiful partner.
Itzhak, I am sorry to say it but you dominated this performance and overwhelmed Natalia's gentle dancing. Your violin playing was too strong in most parts of this piece and I found it difficult to focus on the beautiful dancing. You are a brilliant violinist but in this performance you should have played second fiddle (pardon the pun) to Natalia and Ivan's superb dancing.
Beautiful dance! Perlman's performance here is a little too much.
It is said that he was her favorite partner.
Anthony Dowell too 😊
@froxy719 Amen! Amen.
She is my all-time favorite. Her artistry and control were unreal. However, she got so thin near the end of her career, it was sometimes distracting. Such is the case with this performance for me. Her artistry here is incredible, but her incredibly boney legs and body were extremely distracting to me and sometimes detracted from her otherwise beautiful lines.
She didnt have a 6 o'clock extension.
No, she did not. It’s never been a specific requirement, particularly for Odette. It wasn’t until the last 30 years that it became the standard. Either way, it doesn’t bear mentioning.
Actually, she did. She just didn't find an artistically valid or relevant reason to use it in this adagio. Dancing modern pieces by Glen Tetley, John Neumeier, Maurice Bejart, George Balanchine and Sir Kenneth MacMillan she'd deploy her 6 o'clock penchée very liberally. She even did one upside down while balancing on her partner's shoulder in a Roland Petit piece. Coaching the now-retired Uliana Lopatkina several years ago in this same Swan Lake Act II adagio, she told the younger ballerina to back off a little on the 6 o'clock arabesque penchée. "Don't hide your partner's face," was her admonishment. Great advice.
She never needed one.
@@avesraggiana Exactly.
the music is too slow, the violinist really tried his best to keep in order and synchronised with the movement but its not working. to be honest and with all respect at 44 you cant deliver the same performance as you did at 24.
its like she weighs nothing
Makarova was a wonderful ballerina indeed’ but not as great as Plissetskaya, Pavlova, Karsavina, Oulanova and Plissetskaya, the four Russian graces of dance.
Muy bueno !!
