I think this was probably the finest production of Swan Lake ever, best costumes, best sets, even better than that of the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg. It should be revived for a new generation to see, when I first saw it I was totally in awe from beginning to end.
One of THE BEST final pas de deux ever! I've seen many version of Swan Lake and only this one almost left me in tear. My gosh, sir Anthony Dowell is magnificent here! His dramatic strike work so well in this. And don't even get me started on dame Natalia Makarova. I could sing praise of her for days. Wow.
Makarova and Dowell are simply exquisite together, punctuating their phenomenal talent and skill with superlative nuance. This corp de ballet supporting them in every way in being as breathtakingly synchronised. Thank you for sharing this.❤❤❤
Magical and Beautiful!!💞A Gorgeous performance by Natalia Makarova and Anthony Dowell....😊 heartbreaking and flawless dancing bringing tears to my eyes!!😇💝
This is the only finale of this ballet that brings me to tears. Nothing else has ever come close to me. Picture perfect, and it fits the music beautifully. Obsessed.
While living in NYC during the seventies and eighties, I saw these incomparable artists dance many times with ABT and The Royal Ballet. The ultimate fusion of beauty and athleticism.
Thank you so much for uploading this video for us. Found it at last! I was 6 when my father showed me this masterpiece on his LD and especially this Finale was deeply engraved in my heart and memory then, and is still so touching and moving.
@EmmaLoves2Dance They do die. That run, run, run, leap they both do on the upstage diagonal symbolizes their throwing themselves into the lake to drown. When they reappear, they've "resurrected" in the after life, reunited in death in another world. What the remaining mortal swan maidens see is their image floating away into the next world, while they remain in this world to bid them a last farewell.
I agree almost one hundred percent. The only thing I could wish for would be the Maryinsky corps de ballet in the white acts. To this day, even though corps dancing standards have dropped off somewhat from the extremely high watermark set by Oleg Vinogradov, the Maryinsky corps is still the most unified, the most expressive and the most arresting in the world. No CDB has as much collective stage presence, they rivet you, even while just standing still. Makarova and Dowell are legendary here.
Very sad! A love lesson learned! I can relate to the "the bad guy" when decides not to jump. Like a Japanese kamakasie pilot saying " just a minute... you want me to do what?" I am a romantic; but jeeeese.
Definitely one of the best productions and performances ever.

One of the most beautiful ballets ever performed. Tchaikovsky must have been inspired by God itself to compose such beautiful music.
These „old“ ballet videos just have their own magic. I really enjoy watching them 🥰

Dowell and Makarova were years ahead of their time. Incredibly moving performance.

Still the best most epic ballet after many years. It still gives me goosebumps after all these years, swanbumps, actually.

In fact this has been the best fourth act of Swan Lake I've ever seen.

Best Rothbart costume ever. Greatly resembles Vermithrax from Dragonslayer, a film which came out roughly the same year.
Amo este final, con o sin muerte previa de los enamorados; es lo que mejor encaja en la celestial apoteosis musical.

Beautiful
Perfect for each other
Thank you for uploading this. Must of the uploads don't include the full piece of music or Siegfried finding Odette before she jumps!
Excellent.
muy lindo

I am a romantic; but jeeeese.
the ending is epic
Love is stronger than death. I love this ending

Good🤩🤩
this 32 year old staging was straight dope
Are there any other scenes from this performance?
Yes, seven.
everybody seems to like death and bad endings)))well, personally I think music suits happy ending
@BiscuitOfMaple Both the swan and the prince die. Those are their "ghosts" in the other world that you see together on the little boat-thing
Happy ending for once!
haha... what a cute ending!
I really don't get this ending. They're supposed to die.
Swan Lake has several different endings, depending on the company.
ehhhh... Its all good except the ending. Its cooler when they all die.
her upper body is nuts.
NObody beats the Russians at ballet.
coralarch Dowell is British.
Shouldn't have a happy ending.
Too many swans
But that is what made this epic 😎
