A shout-out, too, for the gorgeous Ivan Nagy. Best...partner...ever. I saw him (and Natasha) countless times with ABT, he was never less than a perfect cavalier and a gorgeous dancer in his own right. The 2 of them were my favorite pair in this ever...and he was also a magnificent Albrecht. Thanks for posting this.
Makarova is perfection, such strength, musicality and a wonderful, lithe, pliable body. You notice her back which she uses amazingly......... flexible but strong as are her legs and feet. There may be others who get their legs higher and pirouette faster but they cant even come close to the artistry of this legend.
I love how in both known recordings of Makarova in a full-length Swan Lake, she cleaves to theatrical convention when playing Odile. Good and virtuous characters make their entrance from the right and perform their diagonals to downstage right. Evil characters make their entrances from the left and dance their diagonals to downstage left, like those delicious renversés in the final part of the variation. Makarova was the kind of artist who would have insisted on that .
Impeccable Kirov technique, power, grace, flexibility, confidence! I grew up watching Makarova; to me, she defined what a strong beautiful woman is. Odile is my favorite role of hers. Nagy makes a for a generous partner, enjoyable to watch.
Natalia herself named Ivan one of her all-time favorite partners. And as any connoisseur of ballet knows, it's damn near impossible to share the stage with Natalia Makarova and not just get blown off. I was taken aback when I heard he died. He should have stayed on a lot longer. Really... he had something. The way he seemed to float in the air during his leaps. I was disappointed to hear that he died, but it was wonderful that he taught a few ballet classes over at Gelsey Kirkland's short-lived company. It's sad that didn't last long either. And Gualtier Malde, thank you... for not letting people forget... and letting some people know...
I saw these two dancers in a full length Swan Lake performance in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1974. And I saw her again, same place, same ballet in 1976 with Anthony Dowell. Second row from the front. Am I lucky or what?
i wish gelsey kirkland and baryshnikov danced this ballet, they were SO great in the nutcracker i bet it would have gone down in history if they danced swan lake togather!
when I was studing ballet every girl in my school wanted to be like Makarova, she was perfection, her techniche , her beautiful body. Now the girls want to be like ....we all know. I am watching this video and still see what I saw then, but I see more, something else:she is so natural, her dance is very fluid, she dances with her body and soul. Unfortunately these days this PdD is all exageration, huge extensions, jumps, and I still prefer, this serenity, naturality and perfection.
Realmente, ella, es soberbia; tiene esa majestad de los, autenticamente, Grandes; el tiene calidad, reconocido Primer Bailarin; pero la que domina toda la escena, y acapara toda la atencion, es ella.
Agreed! I saw these two dancers in a full length Swan Lake performance in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1974. And I saw her again, same place, same ballet in 1976 with Anthony Dowell. Second row from the front. Am I lucky or what?
@MarloManners66 SAW IVAN IN LA BAYADERE WIITH ABT IN ITALY NERVI BALLETSUMMERFEST,HE WAS GOOD,BUT THE DAY AFTER THERE WAS MICHA IN THE SAME ROLE THAT OVESHADOWED HIM,BUT WAS GOOD.
Eleanor D'Antuono was a pleasant and competent dancer, but quite thoroughly overshadowed by the likes of Kirkland, Gregory, Makarova, and even Martine Van Hamel, who had a lot more 'soul.' Poor Eleanor tended to get paired with the pedestrian Ted Bissel (I think that was his name) at Saturday matinees. We on the SRO line would save our shoe leather for the evening casts in that case!
Ivan is so little-known. That's partly his fault as he chose to retire extremely early--this prominent Hungarian ballerino hung up his slippers at a rather tender age. And it's not like he had to as he was injured or anything. Natalia herself has referred to him as "her favorite partner." So did Gelsey Kirkland and... well, almost every ballerina who was ever lucky enough to dance with him. He was the ultimate cavalier. He'd rather accommodate the ballerinas than try to outshine them.
Honey, serenity is good and normal for Odette, but not for Odille, she should be irresistible and mean. I think Makarova was good as Odette, but as Odille she was neither enough powerful nor flamboyant, imo.
Это не черный лебедь,а белый в черной пачке. Думать Макарова не умела и не научилась на Западе. This is not a black swan and the white in a black box. Makarov did not know how to think and not learned in the West.
Has anyone else thought Black Swan Pas de Deux is the MOST HORRIBLY coreographed work by Petipa/Ivanov? It's a pas de DEUX. The guy is just following her around WALKING, and lifting and providing support. Take Petitpa's Don Quixote pas de deux, now, that is a nicely male-female balanced pdd :) The danseur is actually dancing and jumping, but not on Black Swan ppd. I hate it.

THIS WOMAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAGIC! TO ME! SHE IS "THE BLACK SWAN"
Makarova is my favorite!! Bravo!!! She is still the best prima ballerina ever!!
I think she is actually more then a Prima , she is Prima Ballerina Asaluta !
Makarova is a goddess! No one can compare with her in this ballet. She is able to cast a spell on everyone who sees her dance.
Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Nagy has to be great also, to share a stage with her. My favorite ballerina of all time.

Natasha-Sensational as always!
She's the best Odette/Odile I've seen so far. Sweet and innocent as Odette and sexy seductress as Odile. Just brilliant. And her extension! Holy cow!

Nagy was flawless, the perfect partner for Makarova.
Макарова это богиня! Никто не способен с ней сравниться в этом балете. Она способна околдовать каждого, кто видит ее танец.
as always beautiful ! can watch that for hours !!

Браво!!!!
Natalia is the one true Swan Princess~
OMG now that is a black swan
She's equally goid as Odette, the white swan.
i Love the sound of the shoe friction with the floor (:

I am again proud of my father...Akira Endo

Шикарнейше
Никогда ничего подобного не видела. После этой Одиллии уже не интересно смотреть на других.
saw nagy once in 1977 with abt in bayaderka,as all the males in abt was overshadowed due the arrival of micha but was very very fine dancer.

All violin solos played by Israel Chorberg, concertmaster from 1970-1983. Hear the exquisite playing starting at minute 1:40.
это просто на грани физических возможностей
Она фантастическая! Нельзя даже сказать, что она танцует, она поет своим телом музыку Чайковского.
é maravilhoso, longe apenas

mee to merluza and remember ivan nagy in italy 77 nervi festival solor in bayadera great style really
look at the line at 4:26...beautiful
Brewsky, I think you may be referring to Eleanor D'Antuono who was American and a fine technician.
@ameaglejazzdude depends on the version, for example the cuban is very tecnical! Its more a pas d'action rather than a pas de deux.
also nagy was fine here ,a too early forgotten dancer imo .l saw live just once in bayadere ,but was very impressed.do you agree?

The good old days, Ivan Nagy dances way better than his compatriot, Youri Vámos.
