- 1999 Buick Regal odometer and gear selector were not showing up. Ending up replacing 4 resisters and also fixing the headlight switch that caused the speedometer not to be backlit at night
270 ohm 1/2 watt resisters ($1.49/5 pack @ Radioshack)

I had to do this repair on my son's car around 2010, it is a cheap easy repair on an expensive part. Gotta love you tube and people sharing DIY video's. Thanks
I looked at 4 different videos for this & this 1 was the Best.. thanks
Thanks for the video got mine to work.....
i actually just did this fix myself using a resistor I pilfered from an old DVD player power supply, even though it wasn't a 270 ohm resistor it worked perfectly. i think it was a 340 ohm resistor, but it actually seems brighter than before. i was able to reuse the three factory resistors by refreshing the solder, which i believe is the real problem since the heat they generate make the solder hard and brittle.
Two handyman things im not able to do at this time.
Good carpentry
And
Sodering.
Which is funny my caveman dad.
Somehow could soder.
Worked on my 2004 century refreshed the solder on the resisters an now its brighter than ever
Hey thanks, but you can just solder the old resistors back in- they develope cold joints. It's a pain- they are small, but it got my odo and prndl back in action!
someone had changed the ones in my buick regal with very large resistors and they get really hot, and circuits (copper inlay) seems to lift up off the board a little bit, some of the gear selector ones aren't working properly and the mileage is missing two digits such as x2x454 and the temp gauge is off big time as soon as you start it , normal reads hot but gradually goes down two the 3/4 hot. and front daytime running light on passenger is very dim and front blinker on same side doesn't blink as it should, you have to manually blink it, ye the rear on that side blinks really fast
Wow..talk about electrical problems
@@edubb2491 I threw the entire thing away, got tired of messing with it, so I was able to buy a used one off ebay, had double the mileage on it, but all works with upgraded resistors soldered in. works great now, just hate it showing that many miles
@@wonderwond sorry man! that's a crazy that its showing false miles..weird to look at..plus if you wanted to sell..yea i got same issues ..i..jus dont know what to do..wonder how much for used one..or new one plus labor?
@@edubb2491I done it all myself , was really easy. everyone seems to have a different model odometer, when you take it out, it will have a sticker on it, then search for the year and make with that number on it on ebay,, easy to change out think mine was around 80.00 for used one
What was the watt and ohms of the resitor? Have the same problem with my daughter's car. Thanks
So my dimmer switch works but my odometer and gear selector light is out if I replace the fuse could it fix the problem?
What would cause the odometer to work when the vehicle is off but then when you turn the key on the odometer screen goes off?
+Eric Rollins that sounds like you have a short some were.
Do you think that resistor setup would apply to other GM makes as well from that era?
Hello, excuse me, please help me, I changed the resistors just like you did and it didn't work, the resistors get hot
Resistors will get hot as they impede electrical energy from going through them. As for it not correcting the issue, make sure the resistors are the correct size, and there may be other electrical issues in your board
This is not something that I am technically capable of doing who do I go to to get this type of work done?
My question too..did you get fixed?
Someone who has the knowhow of circuit boards. Like an electrician or auto repair person who knows how to do this
Now all we need to know is how to take the dash apart and put it back together again. Incidentally, Radio Shack no longer exists.
does the wattage on the ohms matter? I found 150 ohm 1/2 watt and 150 ohm 1/8 watt. Which one should I use
+Eric Sylvester. In this case the wattage probably doesn't matter but to be safe I would put in the 1/2 watt. The wattage is the rating of the power that it can handle running through it. Does not affect t the resistance rating at all.
+Eric Sylvester I would suggest using the 1/2 watt to be safe
I only need a simple odometer mileage reader. Not a "trip odometer" but see the mileage my car has. My PRNDL led lights went out (circuit board resisters, shit). Can someone suggest the cheapest or free OBD or something like that, maybe a bluetooth, i dont know. I need to change the oil soon, haha.
Try a generic obd 2 bluetooth adapter and torque lite. Be about 20 from Amazon. Or better I have heard good things about blue driver but it's more expensive.
People actually make a living from this, and we're almost 2030 with Westworld bots humming around.
Video didnt help at all, fried the whole instrument cluster
Haha.
Haha. That sucks. You did it wrong.
This guys video didnt help at all, I did exactly what what was in the video and it got expensive real quick just to get a replacement dont tell me I did it wrong
Well if you fried your instrument cluster... You obviously did something wrong 😂😂😂
Probably you accidentally over soldered, and connected the board essentially giving it battery voltage at whatever amperage the wires could supply/it would draw. This is an okay video since it introduces the concept, but the correct way to do it is with SMD chip resistors.
I did exactly as the video said, I'm not some idiot, the video said to solder resistors in the wrong spots
