You just saved my 88 year old father lots of bucks...bucks that would have been taken by the local Buick stealership. Armed with my 99 cent pack of 150 ohm, 1/2 watt, RS resistors, I removed the old ones and soldered in the new ones...success! It was 2 years that the cluster was dark. The hardest part was getting the trim off without breaking it, after all it's a 2003 and plastic gets brittle! Many thanks again...and keep on putting these helpful videos out!
Thank you sooooo much for the very detailed instructional video! Just finished soldering in the new resistors, put the gauge cluster back in, and voila! Works awesome! My hubby will be very pleased when he sees that his mileage is back up and running! Just as a side note, at first the mileage would not roll over; The trip meter was functioning properly, but the mileage wasn't moving. All you have to do is push the trip meter button in and let it spring back, and then the mileage starts moving.
You just saved me $280! I replaced this instrument cluster to get it inspected last year. Two months after I had it inspected with the replacement, out again it went. :( So, I thought I'd fix it. I looked on TH-cam following my son's advice and found your video. All the four on the right top were gone. I went to radio shack and got them, put them in and what do you know, worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this. Much appreciated.
8 months ago my odometer went out and I followed your instructions and it worked!! Today my driver info center went out and I did the same and fixed it. Your video saved me twice. Thanks again!!
Fixed this today on a 2003 GS. There was 1 blown on the PRND321 and 2 on the driver info center. I went ahead and knocked out the other ones and put new resistors on all of them and it works perfect. I've never soldered on a circuit board and it turned out just fine. Bought two 5 packs for $3 and that's saved me at least $120+S&H from eBay. Thanks for the video.
Are you kidding, man you don't know for how long i have been driving my regal with no clue as to how many miles my car had. Tried everything. was almost ready to by a whole new one for about 3 c-notes. You my friend..are a hero to us do it youselfers. God bless you for all your help. it really works
Thanks for this! I needed to sell my car but certainly couldn't do that without the odometer working! Don't attempt to solder if you have drank too much coffee or have the shakes. It took 3 people to solder those little buggers in there - one to solder, one to hold the resister with some tweezers - and one to steady the board. It worked though!
Just did this today thanks to your video. Was concerned how it would turn out since I never soldered anything before. Ended up being simple and worked like a charm on my 2002 Buick Regal LS. Thanks!
The original size resistors are small form factor surface mount type. The ones that you use should work fine when you trim them. To have a better connection that lasts longer, use silver solder (available at Radio Shack). To clean up the excess(resin that could attract moisture and corrode or cause a short) use rubbing alcohol with a small brush. This would make a better longer lasting repair...
You saved me so much money! I have owned a 97 Regal and a 01 Regal that have both had the same problem on the 97 I paid over $400 to replace the cluster and on the 01 the dealership told me it would cost me $450 to fix. I followed the info from this video and bought everything that you said and fixed this for $32 (I bought a $20 saldering iron from RadioShack but they had some for $10) Thank you soooooo much you are THE SHIT!
THANK YOU!!!! AND GOD BLESS YOU!!! You just saved me $200 - $2= $198. This worked like a charm. At first, I changed only 1 resistor (150 ohm 1/2w), the result was a dim odometer and even dimmer with the lights out. So I changed all 4 of the ones on the right side (odometer ones) now odometer displays again (brighter than ever!!!) you da man!
Great instructional video, I pulled my cluster off and found all four of the resisters had burnt off. I replaced them and now its working great. This was on a 2000 Century, it took longer to take the dash apart than it was to solder on the new resisters. I took my time and the whole process was right about an hour.
Thanks for posting this. I have a 2001 Buick Century. This worked for me. I only replaced one resistor instead of all four. Only one had fallen off. 20 cent part, $7.99 for a soldering kit from Radio Shack to fix plus time which was about an hour mostly because I haven't soldered anything before.
Mechanic told me he'd have to ship it out-of-town ... Electronics Tech said he couldn't do it. So I went to Radio Shack like you said. THANKYA, THANKYA. Gonna' do my DIGITAL CLIMATE CONTROL next week ... Thanks, Again
This works. I measured the resistor that came off the cluster, and it was only 125 ohms, but used a 150 ohm resistor to fix it. I will report back here if anything goes wrong. But my odometer and prndl are working again. Thanks for figuring this out. Pretty crazy to change the entire cluster over this.
YOUR VIDEO WAS THE BEST I DID WHAT YOU SAID AND IT WORKED AND I SAVED $160.00 BY NOT HAVING TO BUY A CLUSTER ON EBAY IT COST ME $2.56 FROM RADIO SHACK THANKS AGAIN
Thank you so much, I thought it was a blub problem, this will be a piece of cake to repair for me. I can't thank you enough. Some techs online wanted to charge me 18 bucks to give me the answer and all I have to do is buy the resistors for a dollar plus tax and my time and BAM!!, I'm back on the road again( there's a song some wear in this statement), well alumina ted. You are Awesome.
This really does work. I did it several months ago, as I posted on this site. Mine is still working fine. If you don't know how to solder-get help. The printed circuit is delicate and you must be careful.
This worked great for me on my 99 Buick Century. Thanks for the great vid. I was able to take everything apart just fine, then I coulnd't figure out what was wrong. Never would have thought to check for "missing" resistors. All 4 of mine were off. I found 2 of them laying lose inside the cluster compartment. It was only 99 cents for 5 resistors at Radio Shack. Extremely cheap fix. Thanks.
I watched your video and fixed my cluster five years ago and it's still working. Thanks for putting up the vid!! Hahah... you almost said Circuit City. I miss Circuit City. Thumbs up!!
You are awesome!!! Awesome info. My odometer kept going bright/dim/out randomly. Followed instructions and everything is working great. Found out the 4 resistors on the upper right were bad. bottom one was missing and the other 3 just came off when touching them. Saved me a ton of money and time. Dealer wanted to charge me for a new instrument panel and wanted an arm and a leg for it.
Thanks, I'm going to use your same procedure to repair a friend's century. I know it will be a little different, but this points me in the right direction.
this really works just did mine today, bought a iron at radio shack for 29.99 bought a mid range one. some solder and two 5 pack of 150 ohm 1/2 watt resistors these resistors i bought are bigger than the factory ones but there are small holes just below each solder points so run your leads off the resistors through the holes and solder them that way theres enough room. works great,, good luck guys its really easy.. thanks for the awesome video..
Thanks so much! This was a super easy, super cheap fix, and cost me about 30 minutes of tear out/re-install time and $1.06 in parts. Really appreciate the detail in the vid! :)
I have to say this was an awesome video to post!!! I went to radio shack got the resistors, I hadn't soldered in a while but was able to do well enough that the cluster now works fine. Thank you for saving me more than $100.00!
good day,im just going to say thank you very much for sharing this video ,we just did repair our 1998 buick regal gauge cluster we followed ur video and it works...again more power to you and thank you and God bless...
Thanks! Super helpful, especially the specifics on which resistors to buy. For $0.99 my odometer & prndl work again! One of my original Rt side resistors had fallen off & the remaining 3 fell off when I touched them.
I used to work in a PCB factory. It appears that the solder paste for those 4 resistors never got enough heat in the SMT machine, resulting in poor joints from the factory. The resistors themselves most likely can be reused if they're still there; which is what I did tonight. 1. Remove the resistors and remove the solder on the pads with solder wick. 2. Carefully clean the terminals on the resistors with a wire brush. 3. Solder the resistors back in place (preferably with 63/37 solder).
BlownRegalLSX, Thank you so much!!! It worked perfectly. I was going to send out the cluster to have it repaired for $169. plus shipping and you saved me a bundle!
thanks for the info this worked o.k. however i would like to add that the radio shack resistors are not like the factory ones in that they mount to the circuit board differently.... the factory ones do not go thru the board as the radio shack ones were designed to.... so you have to do a little customizing to make them fit! I would also advise to ad a little 5 minute epoxy so they will not come loose.... so far so good!!!
If you use a tester you will find that 2 of the resistors are 150 and 2 are 120. Dont know if that helps but I soldered the originals back on and it works great! Thanks!!!
specmo wants 195+ tax to repair, and i have to pull cluster and take it to them, time to save my customer $2-300 and make myself $100. Thanks for posting this extremely helpful video!
Planning on doing this on my little brother's car this weekend - I don't know anything about cars but want to verify you said "150 om resistors 1/2 watt (prongs?)" from Radio Shack? I am trying not to screw this up! Thanks so much for this video!!!!
@saucy, easy way to check is to follow video instructions and use a multimeter to read the resistance of the resistors... then you will know for sure what ohm resistor to use. @justice, yes just get the resistors. The video explains everything. All you need to research is how to take your dash apart. Once you get the instrument panel out, just follow the video instructions. I did this at my computer desk and folled the video as he was doing it.
I figured it out. I disconnected the battery with the lights on. Followed instructions in manual for resetting delayed lighting. GM has alot of those quirky resets. All works good now.
Thank you for info. I repaired a 2003 Century and everything worked great for 2 days then lost everything on cluster. The only thing that comes on is the service engine soon lamp with key on. Checked powers and grounds to cluster and all good there. Any ideas?
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I was able to repair the cluster and it works great now!! My regal is loaded with electrical issues and for once it felt good to cross one off my list of endless repairs. I have issues with the climate control module acting eratically and locking up with heater blasting. Any suggestions on what could be wrong? Thanks again.
Great video. I have a problem with my 2004 Century that is somewhat similar(?). The instrument panel, radio, wipers and windows don't work while the engine is running but do work when the ingition is "on" engine not running. Any ideas?
I have a 2001 buick century custom... and my mileage guage and an PRND123 is out too.. is the regal the same as the century custom with the guages and info center
@adrman100 when you replaced only one, was the odometer bright? I replaced only one at first and my odometer was dim, barely visible in the daytime. So I replaced all the odometer ones and they are nice and bright! Im so boosted!
@thomasw120 Yeah, I found the same values. And the 2 at the bottom, that are in series, are 43-ish. Thanks for that info. I think I'm going to resolder the old ones back on, it probably developed cold solder joints and formed micro-cracks. I guess that's why they break off so easy.
Thank you for your video! My PRND123 has been out for a year. I am going to do in myself as well. My question is: What precautions do you take when working around electric and around the dashboard? Thanks!
Just fixed my 1998 Regal thanks to you. My local electronics store was out of 1/2 watt so I used four 150ohm 1watt resistors and what do you know. My odometer is back! Thanks!
Ive got a 2001 with this exact problem. we put new resistors in and they all test ok (my dad is no stranger to circut boards and electronics) and yet the odometer is still dark? what now? thanks

I have a 99 Regal with this problem, but the lights are also off that display my a.c and heat controls. Is that a separate problem or will this fix that problem also?
Ok so I replaced the resistors.. The milege and driver info all lights up but the backlight is still out and the dimmer switch dont dim anything. How do I get the bulbs working? New bulbs?
@justice smith... i fixed it myself. Just followed the instructions in the video and googled how to take the dash apart to get the instrument cluster out... actually very easy if you follow instructions and know how to solder.
that looks like my cluster in my 99 century, will it work? my speed needle is bouncing all over the gauge, changed the VSS (twice) and i was told it was this
hi,thanks for sharing the video ,but i have a question...where i can buy the resistor?is it at the electronic stores? i try at the source but they dnt have the 150A/1/2w resistor.so u think i can go any other electrical stores?thank you
I found out about that when my brothers Instrument Cluster was dim and sometimes no illumination so I removed it from the dash and took it apart and scanned across the board with a magnifying glass and soldered some areas that I thought might work but it didn't so while in hand a Carbon Film surface mount Resistors popped of the circuit Board then figured out that must be or probably was the problem so ohm ed resistors he went and bought them and I solder them in place and its bright now
You just saved my 88 year old father lots of bucks...bucks that would have been taken by the local Buick stealership. My son and I made this repair in less than an hour! We were leaving the next day. This was a priceless repair! Thanks for posting!

Where did you find resisters without ordering them? Don't know where to find them locally.
I bought them at a Radio Shack.
@@angelpena6702I know my car is old when Radio Shack has gone out of business!! 😢 Thanks for the info!

found some resistors from an old pcm in my garage soldered them to the board and worked great in my 2000 buick century thanks..many thanks
Worked like a charm!! Thank you for posting this up. I wouldn't know what to do without this vid. Many thanks!
This is a solution to something thst was driving me crazy thank you.

thanks a lot.best of luck in all you do
Thanks alot saved me time and money
Thanks man... i fixed mine the way you said... great video.
Works great now, thank so much for sharing this video.
Worked great thanks for the video!
Worked for me! Thanks for the video! Not too bad for a $12 fix.
Dude you're fantastic! HVAC control screen is up next! thank you so much!
worked like a charm. thanks bro
Planning on doing this on my little brother's car this weekend - I don't know anything about cars but want to verify you said "150 om resistors 1/2 watt (prongs?)" from Radio Shack? I am trying not to screw this up! Thanks so much for this video!!!!

It is my Driver info center that failed on my regal GS, did the "150 om resistors 1/2 watt" goes there too?
Great info ! Thanks.
Man thanks a ton it work just like you said!! Any way you can do a video like this for the digital climate display?
Thank you for info. I repaired a 2003 Century and everything worked great for 2 days then lost everything on cluster. The only thing that comes on is the service engine soon lamp with key on. Checked powers and grounds to cluster and all good there. Any ideas?
I wish I had someone who could do this for me!!! Thanks! I'm going to share...so get mine fixed!!
Great info !
Any ideas?
@ MrHansonmi, thankz...... so i need only a new 150 ohms resistor for that? am i correct? so that i can see how the milage it works..?
I guess that's why they break off so easy.
is it possible to change the color of the led lights that light up the gauges?
hey great info!! does the resistor have to be .5 watt, i can only find 1/4 or 1 watt 150 ohm thanks!
Thank you for your video! My PRND123 has been out for a year. I am going to do in myself as well. My question is: What precautions do you take when working around electric and around the dashboard?
Thanks!
you said you switch LS to GS, did you need to reprogram it???
Just fixed my 1998 Regal thanks to you. My local electronics store was out of 1/2 watt so I used four 150ohm 1watt resistors and what do you know. My odometer is back! Thanks!
great job with the camera showing us how to take the clips off the back. lol
are there places to repair these or by a replacement? My odometer just went black its a 02 LS
Dis shit works. 100% good lookin bro!!
Ive got a 2001 with this exact problem. we put new resistors in and they all test ok (my dad is no stranger to circut boards and electronics) and yet the odometer is still dark? what now?
thanks
did this fix your tach and speed lights too, mine only work randomly and when they don't the dimmer doesn't work also
I have a 97 regal ls. My speedo gauge and tach gauge lights don't work. I replaced the fuse in the passenger side box several times. always blows. My odo info center works fine. Will this fix my problem?
I have a question relating to this. I did this 2 days ago, and it worked, but now I have no headlights. I have parking lights, but no headlights. Do I have to reset something?
Hey it works but my boost gauge isnt showing any boost...any advice?
I have a 99 Regal with this problem, but the lights are also off that display my a.c and heat controls. Is that a separate problem or will this fix that problem also?
Ok so I replaced the resistors.. The milege and driver info all lights up but the backlight is still out and the dimmer switch dont dim anything. How do I get the bulbs working? New bulbs?
@justice smith... i fixed it myself. Just followed the instructions in the video and googled how to take the dash apart to get the instrument cluster out... actually very easy if you follow instructions and know how to solder.
that looks like my cluster in my 99 century, will it work? my speed needle is bouncing all over the gauge, changed the VSS (twice) and i was told it was this
thank you!!!
Awesome video--- but how do you get the cluster out of the car =) I've got no idea how to take it out...
hi,thanks for sharing the video ,but i have a question...where i can buy the resistor?is it at the electronic stores? i try at the source but they dnt have the 150A/1/2w resistor.so u think i can go any other electrical stores?thank you
How do u take the cluster out?
if the resistors go bad can that cause my odometer to say error?
went to radio hack also, got the resistors, soldered them in. still no lights also, and now the gas gauge is out.... any ideas???
how do you get it out can you fix the heater
Did you get it fixed yet? If you're near Seattle, I could get it and fix it--I'm going to fix mine! This is awesome!
I found out about that when my brothers Instrument Cluster was dim and sometimes no illumination so I removed it from the dash and took it apart and scanned across the board with a magnifying glass and soldered some areas that I thought might work but it didn't so while in hand a Carbon Film surface mount Resistors popped of the circuit Board then figured out that must be or probably was the problem so ohm ed resistors
he went and bought them and I solder them in place and its bright now
