Danish oil is the best finish ever. super easy, and it dries rock hard. it lasts a long time. when the time comes to refinish, you can buff it up with fine steel wool then reapply. great stuff.

I did a similar setup last year. I made the mistake of measuring from the floor and just going off that. It's not super un-level but it isn't perfectly level either. Looks good!
I’m definitely going to replicate this desk frame setup when I build my PC setup in my room. Great idea, except I don’t have a limited area like you do in that fall back in the wall so I can just square out a desk and get it flush with the wall and I’ll be fine
Im not experienced on this and want to make a similar project. So my question is why glue pieces when you can buy a piece of ply wood for the top? Is there a reason for putting pieces together? Your video is great and will help me make mine. I want to make sure I make no mistakes.

Thx for the video and for breaking down the build & install step-by-step. It's really REALLY useful for newbies like me. Oh, and I just bought myself a new stud finder and Kreg jig ;-)
I did this a couple of years ago. I regretted butting worktop all the way to the walls. An expansion gap was required. The result was load noises as it expanded and contracted.

get the wood cut to size from someone else. Maybe the workshop you buy the wood from could do it for you. You would just need a drill and some screws then

@@ThatTechTeacher427 thanks. I figured that one quickly enough! After one attempt without pre drilling, I realized how soft the typical lumber used for 2 x 4s actually is, so I was pre-drilling away, and it made everything so much easier.
DIY.... uses machines your average joe shmoe does not have. could have added a bit that you can just order butcher blocks from a hardware store, or even Ikea. as for the wall not be flush, just leave a gap and run an led light strip along the back and find a way to seal off the gap from underneath so that you can add a translucent resin layer that the light will shine through but perhaps not completely translucent if you want to diffuse the light (just need to make sure it won't leak all over the place).boom done.
Great video! I noticed that your pocket holes on the shorter boards inside the frame alternate what side they are on for screwing into the wall-mounted back board vs the front board. Is there a reason for that?

Thanks! The top is 88" wide, 26" deep, and just over 3/4" think. With just the top is would sag although with the 2x4 frame under it I was standing on it yesterday an it didnt move.
Small tip if you need to be more precise measuring an inside length like that, check your tape, it should have a measurement on it. you can then back it all the way against the wall on the right with the end of the tape on the left. add what you see on the tape to the length indicated on the roll(usually like 2 1/2 inches or in that neighborhood). much easier that trying to guess on the bent tape.
5:41 It wasn't all that clean of a cut. I see a chunk of the front panel broke off. I've had the same problem and have solved that by doing all my circular saw cuts on top of hard foam insulation boards. or even pieces of foam packing that comes in boxes for televisions and other stuff. Since it supports both the main piece and cut-off, you'll never break off a corner when cutting on it.
Good point. I have a screws in the bottom in each different wood type at different locations along the desk. Not sure yet if that will hold it too rigid and not allow it to move or work correctly.
@@ThatTechTeacher427 Great video but yes I immediately thought of future issues with wood movement. Pocket holes don't allow your table top to expand/contract. The top will unavoidably do so width-wise. You will very likely start to see the table top bowing up or down since movement is restricted. They make figure 8 metal clips that you can use to screw the top in, and they are made to allow for this movement. I'd suggest those. Otherwise great concept. Search for figure 8 table top connectors on amazon.

Did you put Teak Oil on the underside of the desk? This helps problems with cracking/cupping in the future. Great project.

Did your PC have 3 HDMI outputs? if not how did you set up the connections?
Any concern with wood movement? Seems like it would grow or shrink and the pocket screws would crack the wood.
