    a part of my large fencing project I built 2 new fence gates. I had to build a large 13’ double gate and a single 4’ gate to make access to the yard easier.
    Both of these gates are shadow box, 6’ wooden privacy fence gates that match the new fence that I am building. I made sure to do everything I could to ensure the gates would hold up over time and not sag. I used pressure treated 2x4’s and pressure treated pine pickets.

    Par excellence! I often get wrangled into building fences and have not liked my gate design. I started adding diagonals to my last ones. Your lap joint design is even better. Thank you!

    Thank you for such a thorough video. I have this exact scenario (a shadow box fence with a large double gate) and was looking for ideas on how to make the gates. This was so well done and I appreciated your attention to showing how you did the lap joints and the cross brace. Thanks also for the tip at the end about the doing a lap joint on the cross brace - I will incorporate that. Your idea to use those wheels was phenomenal - such a great solution to help reduce sag. Much appreciated! I'm in process of building mine now and am confident I'll have a sturdy, well built fence and gates. Thank you!

    Great design, although i did the same design with screws thinking it would be stronger than nails , what i found out over time is that the movement or flex of the fence and gate through wind or opening and closing of the gate loosened the screws. Nails flex and screws don't.
    I built a fence with all screws thinking i was the best, although over time i had to keep screwing the screws in and over time they did not screw in as they were stripped out.
    My neighbor that built a fence the same time used nails, and his maintenance is nothing compared to mine.
    awesome

    @ 10:11 I smile and laugh out loud because that looks so good👍 Last weekend I rebuilt my fence. I'm super nervus about building the gate. because I've heard horror stories about it. I've even contemplated hiring someone to build it for me. Mine would be a double gate like yours; but smaller. You make it look easy; this is why I have joy about this video. ...Pray for me that I can do this.😊

    I'm going to use your video to replace two sagging 10ft aluminum gates. The gates were even repaired poorly by a welder. That didn't last. The tricky part will be the PVC posts. I either dig two new holes and put in 4x4 posts or attach wood to the PVC posts. Posts are filled with concrete. Thank you. And that awesome, your dad was a great helper and you could spend time together.

    Exceptionally well done.... better than a lot of the professional work I've seen lately. I'm currently working on rebuilding the fencing around my property. Your video has inspired me to go that extra mile in getting the job done right. My downside is that I do not possess a miter saw which is definitely necessary to complete those joints the way that you did them. I wonder if I can rent one.

    I am a retired professional land surveyor and have to admit that you plannned and executed your gate construction extremely well. I am going to be erecting a 4 foot stockade fence and will be building a smalller version of a large gate for my daughter. after watching your video, I may either try a single 8 foot gate or a 4 foot version of your doudle gate. I have one question about your construction, did you ever consider installing an H frame for the bearing posts on each side of the gate to offset the weight load?

    Looks good. From experience with a drop rod in the ground - please allow me to suggest a change. I would pour a concrete slab about 18-24" around the PVC receiver pipes. Also, I would put 12" PVC pieces of pipe in the ground. Deeper pipe gives room for dirt to collect between clean outs - less frequent clean outs. The slab minimizes dirt washing in the PVC pipes and also locks them in against shifting in high winds.

    • @ThatTechTeacher427
      @ThatTechTeacher427  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's a great idea and you are correct. For me I believe this is temporary, I am planning on a very large concrete slab in the area leading up to something....
      For now I thought about drilling 2 holes in the pavor.

    Love the gate idea with building as a complete unit laid out on the driveway. How did you determine what the “angle” was to transfer the layout to the flat driveway? Was it a combination of using the level and that large yellow protractor to determine angle of the string line, or did you use a different method?

    How deep & wide did you dig your posts to support such a large gate? I have heard that gate posts need to be cemented in deeper and wider than normal fence posts. Awesome video and very helpful. We are also building our own.

  • @gruntled_ca
    @gruntled_ca ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this. I think I have watched this video 60 times already in preparation for my own project. I finally ordered the materials today only to realize that I don’t know if a 4x4 post (in cement) (existing) is sufficient to support such a wide gate? Are yours 4x4 posts? Also, do you think they would support a 90” single gate (I have an obstacle in the other gate that allows maximum 4’ gate on that side).
    Huge thanks for any help you can provide!!

    Good looking gates. I was wincing watching you cut the lap joints though. Its almost always a bad idea to use both the fence and the miter at the same time. I always clamp a block to the fence well back from the blade to set the spacing of the cut to prevent a kick back situation.
