As much as I love Japanese. They are famous for the honne and tatemae *real and the facade* Most are warm to foreigners. Some that aren't take time to get to that point. It's hard to know what a Japanese person is really thinking, takes time to know them. :D Japanese can be quite friendly. *example in the non busier areas, there are groups that go out in the evening and walk the streets to patrol* You have to get away from the major city areas to see the everyday Japanese life. It's there all around you.

Yes, Japanese, Korean, and other east asians have a reputation of being unfriendly toward foreigners. From personal experiences, I do agree that they are friendlier but it depends on who you are and what you look like too. That's the same in the US or anywhere else in the world. Being a tall and attractive blond female who can speak Japanese will definitely get strangers to open up quickly to you. Others who don't quite fit this profile won't get the same kind of reception, unfortunately.

Agree. It's the "superior westerner" that gets the kind attention. I lived in Tokyo and San Francisco. It's not even close. Brown Asians are definitely low in the social ladder in Tokyo. No matter how nicely you speak to them.

@@filemonyumul8168 not just Japan but what you mentioned is mostly true for China and SE Asian countries. However, in my experience, darker skin Asians are assumed to be in a lower social class/ working class…that’s why sun protection is so important.

I mean even as a "white" person I can't go into some shops, restaurants and bars, and can't rent 80% of apartments. Meanwhile such things are illegal in every other developed country. Yes, most Japanese people you meat on the street are nice, but the structural racism is going to eat your life away little by little.

Nobody’s face brightens up like a Japanese person hearing foreigners speak their language. I only know a few sentences in Japanese, but even just a couple of words earns you major brownie points, and you immediately realise how friendly and open they are. Once, I was on a train in Melbourne, and sat next to me were two Japanese girls and I had to get past them to get off the train. All I said to them was “Samimasen” and they reacted as if I’d just made their week. I also used to live in Hong Kong, and whilst there’s a huge expatriate community there, not many of them bother to learn any Cantonese. I couldn’t say much, but I learned some greetings, please and thank you and how to get home in a cab, and it seriously earns you a hell of a lot of praise from the locals. On the surface, many are very shy, quiet and reserved, but scratch it a little and they’re honestly some of the sweetest, friendliest and most welcoming people in the world.

you know, reefrunner, it's not the same thing with japanese in japan. they only wants to hear fluent japénese. they're more demanding than the japanese who go abroad. they have not the same sense of friendliness

    • @gillmsnfillman1691
      @gillmsnfillman1691 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This isn’t really true especially when you start to become more fluent. Tatemae, they will show a lot of “support” and “happiness” that you’re speaking their language, but Honne, they are becoming increasingly alarmed that investing time to integrate into their culture and society and that is a bad thing.
Their are many accounts from others that once they reached near fluent status the attitudes and people around them quickly changed because they were no longer limited to just the “stupid foreigner who could speak basic Japanese” and you can now integrate which they don’t want. They don’t want most people to be part of their society, maybe very attractive women but no one else.

Koreans are far friendlier than Japanese.
Regarding the benefits of being white, when I traveled throughout Korea during my 2.5 years of living there, I'd typically end up on a Saturday or Sunday late afternoon out in a remote area where there was a really cool ancient temple or stone Buddha. I had no clue how to get back to the main bus station in town, and by that time of day, buses were not running in the boonies. So, I just started walking. Invariably, rather soon, some middle-aged Koreans would pull up to me, ask me where I was headed, offer me a ride, and end up taking me out for a nice dinner.
This happened so regularly that I could count on never being stranded in the countryside after one of my explorations.
Some of those encounters led to good friendships.
It was delightful, and I once told some Korean high school students of mine about it.
They said: "Of course!!! You're a clean-cut WHITE man!!!"
Bam! It'd never occurred to me that my whiteness was a door-opener.
In the case of this attractive young white woman who speaks Japanese fluently in Japan, of course all kinds of natives warmed to her. And don't forget the crucial role of the camera.
You think black people, Indians, or other Asians get such treatment there?

I think a lot of people who go to Japan, the reason why they get the impression Japanese people are cold is because the people visiting aren't actually interested in interacting with Japan and Japanese people, but rather just interacting with the Japan they see online aka harajuku, shibuya, etc. The visitors don't want to conform their life, I know a lot of visitors who go to Japan and end up eating and McDonalds and I am like huh! There is all that good food there but you aren't interested? Such a waste.... First Hand Experience: Japanese people won't give a shit even if you're about to like faint by the street. BUT the moment you start a conversation or ask for help they kind of make it their number one priority to help you and make sure you get what you need. Even if it means walking all the way to the other side of the station climbing up the stairs to the platform and make sure you board the right train. I found it it hilarious how they can go from cold to warm in a second :))

Oh I had an experience where a gentleman walked me to my platform. I asked him in Japanese for directions, he gave me directioms and I walked off, but then still got lost cuz those subway tunnels are something alright, and he passed by me, saw me asking someone for help, and sighed, waved me over, and walked me to the platform. Was annoyed, but still helped. Good people.
And honestly I think the whole fainting and nobody stepping in thing is because Japanese are taught as a societal whole to not stand out. Once one person steps up, more will. It's just hard for them to step up in the first place. It kind of sucks in some ways, but I completely get it. Cultural differences.

Honestly the only bad thing about Japan for me was how far away it is as I get extremely travel sick. When we visited we had such a lovely time despite my not being able to speak any Japanese. People were extremely kind and friendly and the crafts are beautiful. We were even lucky enough to see the first blossoms of the season as the trees woke up from their winter dormancy. I didn't get to do everything I wanted, there's so very much to see, but we brought back some wonderful memories and breathtakingly gorgeous hand forged knives. I'll never forget the sea of lights glittering across the black expanse of the night before Mount Fuji from the top of the Tokyo Sky Tree.

Most polite, considerate culture I’ve ever experienced, I fit right in and had nothing but positive interactions with lovely people always willing to help or interact with someone who returns that same consideration.
I felt as though I could trust a stranger in Japan more than many star belly sneetches I actually know personally here in the narcissistic west.
That trust, honesty and respect are still regarded as inner STRENGTH there
    was my experience.

That’s mostly politeness, worlds away from genuine kindness. The east is actually a lot more narcissistic than the west. Western people may come off as rude but at least they’re more likely to state their opinion loud and clear, whether it’s positive or an uncomfortable truth (expecially Finns) unlike the Japanese who tend to sugar coat a lot to avoid confrontation. Mind me I’m speaking in general, of course it depends on the single individual.

First trip to Japan, my wife and I went to Kamakura. We got off the train one station before because the hike down to town had a lot of shrines and temples to visit. At one point, we were unsure of the route. An older gentleman walking in the opposite direction from us stopped and we managed to get through where we were trying to go. He turned around and walked with us, probably about half a mile, to show us the best way to get where we were going. We’ve had experiences like that in Kagoshima, in Tokyo and in Kyoto also. We’ve found the Japanese people to be reserved, but incredibly friendly and helpful.

I’m a Flight Attendant from Canada, and have spent a lot of time in Narita, Tokyo (Shinjuki area) and Yokohama, and I can tell you that based on my experiences, I can say that I can definitely see and name instances and certain people that get irritated by foreigners. If you are doing something that’s considered rude, impolite, or disrespectful towards them and their culture, on their home turf, then yeah don’t expect to be welcomed and tolerated with open arms! Speaking loudly and with your mouth open, spitting, coughing and blowing your nose ostentatiously, throwing garbage and cigarette buts on the ground to name a few, won’t have you winning many hearts. But if you take the time to learn their customs, as well as a bit of the language and humour, and say THANK YOU for everything, as well as SMILE ( not so much these days with masks), and if you dress relatively nicely (nothing fancy, but don’t leave your place/hotel room looking drabby) you will find that they are quite kind people.

I admit tho, I’ve never been there So I won’t really know but just think of it as an inference lol.

My wife went to Japan many times on business and I went with her the last time. I walked around central Tokyo on my own and stopped for lunch at a typical salaryman noodle bar with crowded benches and I was ushered in and sat down with a bunch of salary men. They immediately recognised I was English and had no clue how to read the menu and started helping me and recommending things on the menu without even being asked. Same on the underground in Tokyo.

A friend and I went to Japan a few years ago. Before the trip, we started learning some of the language and about basic customs. We didn’t want to be rude or inadvertently offend someone. I feel like it went a long way for us. We traveled with a group, all of whom are were strangers and seemed to know nothing about the culture: they were surprised when they kept having to take their shoes off indoors and got tired of drinking tea. On a day when we were going to have the afternoon to ourselves and then meet back up for a Japanese dinner, one of the other tourists yelled out, “everybody make sure to have a good lunch since we’re gonna be having a terrible dinner!” My friend and I were beyond appalled at that remark.
I found the Japanese to be very nice and amused by my attempts to speak their language. I like to think they appreciated the effort. I was by no means fluent but I made sure to learn a few key words and phrases. Some of the food was a challenge for me but I put on my game face and treated it like mother’s milk. I have maintained my interest in Japanese culture long after my trip and I would love to go back.

My dad is one of the sweetest guys you could meet and didn't speak a word of the local language but knew how to say thank you. As the teller was speaking my sister was getting very upset. At the end of the conversation my dad be ignorant of what was going on smiled and said thank you perfectly in the local language. The teller's jaw dropped and his faced turned bright red. My sister almost died laughing. It erased her anger instantly, but she didn't tell my dad until years later. She didn't want to spoil his trip after coming all the way from the USA. I'm an asian living in a western country in a city that is highly multicultural and I've never ever seen or heard that being said about Japanese people - being unfriendly. Actually quite the opposite.
Japanese people are one of the highest tourists in the world! I basically saw Japan tour buses at any given time of day when I used to work in the city. It would make no sense that they would love to visit foreign countries every year and not like foreigners.

Yeah I love asia has never had any bad exp. going there, It was paradise for me, maybe men but idk the men seems very nice in these tourist spots at least. Never heard any complain about it either, All i talked too has never been more satisfied and are always going back.

Going in vacation to Japan and living there is 2 different things. The tourist point of view is biased it's not how it look like in reality ! The Japanese people are not that friendly compared to other regions, what's worst is that they would always see you has a foreign even if you have been there for 10years .
You are also treated differently depending of what type of foreigner you are something like white skin foreigners > all the others.
Japanese tend to use a lot of TateMae so establishing real friendship is really hard Japanese people are not friendly but really polite . But of course all of them are not like that but the majority will always dodged or try to find a way to say no without saying no ^^ .
( All countries have good and bad point Japan is a beautiful country with respectful people, but when I think friendly people I think America, Canada, Spain ect for respectful people I think about Japan Korea and so on )

@@holypopy being 'reserved' and being 'unfriendly' are 2 totally different things. just because they dont jump for joy and rush to talk to you just because youre a foreigner doesnt mean they dont like you. japanese people are very polite, proper, and well-mannered. they dont like bothering people. and just like them, i would avoid anyone like the plague if they showed rowdy behaviour.

@@GT-Oldschool Sorry but I don't believe so if you are telling me 100% of the Japanese population is reserved it's a lie when a Japanese person talk to another Japanese person I don't see that reservation. I have to say that Nobody ask for that kind of treatment from the Japanese like talking to the foreigners ect.
My point is more about the Japanese society / hypocrisy and how they could basically lie to your face . You can ask any foreign that lived in Japan they will tell you how hard it is to make reel connection when in Europe or other Asian countries you sympathize in 3seconde and can make reel connection.
Even hafu (mixed Japanese) born in Japan have difficult time to adjust to the Japanese society and are isolated from the Japanese community it's a very conservative country but explain to me why they do that ? If it's just about being polite, well mannered, reserved .
I'm not gonna talk about the skin color issue or the way they justify everything with the ignorance card in some delicate subject.
The main subject was friendliness so I will finish with how they treat you can be based on something you didn't choose skin , country, ect . You have a rank has foreign based on different criteria..
Some Japanese can be extremely rude thinking you don't understand them you can hear a lot of racial comments or even slang made for foreign that are kinda way of limits.
Anyway I will not continue cause it's way to long but their is some aspects of Japan that are mess up like any country of course :).

when did i say 100% of japanese people is reserved..? your liberal way of thinking gives me a headache. there is no country that is 100% anything. just like not 100% of canadians are nice. im pretty sure some are scumbags.
"Some Japanese can be extremely rude.."
exactly - SOME! most are generally polite.
you automatically like to base things off colour and race. it might be the way you act or the way youre dressed. when you hear them talk about you and describe you, you think theyre being racist when they probably dont mean anything bad by it, but you take offence because youre sensitive and perhaps dont actually know much about the culture. there are words in asian languages that sound very racist, but are not. i have a european friend who is polish who tells me they tell "racist jokes" all the time in their country, but only americans get offended by them. its the same in australia, we tell "racist jokes" and we are a western country. its just you people who watch too much mainstream media and get pressured into "political correctness". they have conditioned and programmed you to be offended at the smallest things, and now i cant post anything without some snowflake getting offended and get my comment deleted.. censorship was never like this, but this new batch of generation are soft.

I was in Tokyo for a week back in the 80s and was very surprised at how friendly and helpful people were.
The only complaint I have is that I never managed to get through the Tokyo underground without someone helping. They would come over and ask to help, take me to the ticked desk to get the right ticket, then to the platform to be sure I didn't get lost.

Great job with the videos, keep them coming! I can honestly say in all my years living in Japan I only ever ran into one old guy on the train who was drunk and abusing me over WW2. I didn't take part, so he was way off.... When I stood up from my seat he calmed down pretty quick as I'm 6'5. Oh, and also the Gomi lady who regularly patrolled my building, and would subtlety return trash to my front door if not packed correctly or placed out on the wrong day.... Pretty sure she didn't like Gaikokujin. Other than those two not an issue ever. Always found Japanese people to be courteous, friendly, super helpful and genuine.
