Both are fantastic. I would say that Grave of the fireflies is the most carthartic and beautiful ghibli but Spirited Away is still better overall. However, The Wind Rises is the most breathtaking one for me even if that isn't a popular view. :)

It is because Spirited Away lacked advertisement since Your Name is in the advantage when it comes to internet. Spirited Away was released in 2001 and for sure it has so many challenges despite the inflation everyone felt in 2001. I Believe Spirited away is just in another level because of it's storyline. Kimi no Nawa is great but for me Spirited Away is classic and is a legend. Kimi No Nawa is great because it's visuals are just impressive but I think it's storyline is overrated I guess. Unlike, Spirited Away, you can just feel it's craft and just sway to the story without having an effort because every scenes in that movie is very memorable and was really good. That movie's plot is I think the one to beat here, and it's plot were on point and it will leave you a satisfied ending with an embedding questions. I enjoyed watching this more than Spirited Away, but I think it was mainly due to the plot twist half way through that made my jaw literally drop and had me on the edge of my seat for the rest of the movie. Spirited Away never had me so thoroughly invested. However, I believe Spirited Away holds up a lot better to multiple viewings, precisely because it doesn't rely on plot twists to stay interesting. I'm sure I'll love watching Your Name again, but it certainly won't be as exciting and gripping as the first time.

I watched a lot of anime movies , i watched Cosette (anime version), Ponyo, My Neighbour Totoro , Wolf children, Garden of Words, When Marnie Was There, Silent Voice, Kimi No Nawa... all of it was precious, emotional and i cried thousand of times but when i watched Spirited Away...it was something probably strange, scary, emotional i watched it when i was 7 and i don't remember if i finished watching it but i was deeply affected, in my opinion Spirited Away can't be even compared cause it's too unique but Kimi No Nawa isn't bad actually it's one of the best new animated movies

Your name looks great visually, and that's all really. The concept isn't original, and the characters are blended and confusing, when they both switches body they break their character, a gentleman switches to a female body suddenly make him act like a badass or delinquent like wtf. Most side characters literally gives nothing to the plot and just stretch out the movie longer, and the movie really have a lot of plot holes, pains me that they got a cellphone and go to school but they don't realize the date difference wtf, I don't bother bout the movie not explaining anything cuz magic watever but the characters not even try to contact each other is just no excuses, everything felt rushes and went downhill after the second half of the movie and the romance really aren't convincing and they handle it less mature compare to most romance animated movie. I can understand why the movie was praised and people have many reason to tell their friends to watch it, saying that the movie looks gorgeous, the romance is good or the characters are relatable etc (relatable not equals to good character btw), but when ppl try to convince their friends to watch Spirited away but they struggle to explain properly why they should watch it, that's when you know you NEED to watch it to know it's a masterpiece

Great review and enjoyed it a lot. But, you missed the most important point. It is really about the the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and the deadly Tsunami afterwards. So going back to save Mitsuha and the townspeople strikes a deeper cord. I lived in Tokyo during that time and saw many of the heartbreaking stories. Look up Miki Endo, an ordinary young lady who stayed at her post broadcasting evacuation warnings until she was swept away by the tsunami. Look at Okawa Elementary School, where the person in charge chose to keep his students and teachers at the school because it was designated and evacuation center. But in reality, it was only for ordinary tsunamis. They had enough time for even the smallest child to make it to the nearby higher ground, if they had decided to move. You can see these events replayed in the movie. The movie is cathartic for Japanese audiences as who hasn't thought about going back in time to save someone or to prevent a disaster. That is why Grave of the Fireflies is to me the greatest anime even if I couldn't bear to watch it again.
Very nice analysis. I was initially disinterested as I've seen plenty of high school dramas and know all the tropes but now I think I will check it out. I don't expect it to to Spirited Away however as they are thematically very different. It'd be like comparing apples to oranges The visuals look as enjoyable as Wolf Children and I am getting some The Girl Who Leapt Through Time/Summer Wars/Millennium Actress vibes in a good way.

I honestly underestimated Your Name and I fell in love with that film, I'll even call it a masterpiece of Animation. But Spirited Away, the detail and magic was truly beyond any animated film I've watched. Spirited Away is what made me question all those Disney movies i watched as a kid and taught me that Anime is not just for kids. It hold a special place in way too many people's hearts for a simple love story to trump it's greatness.

I know that they have different concept since A Silent Voice is relatable but Your Name gives an emotion that we can not clarify, right? Most side characters literally gives nothing to the plot and just stretch out the movie longer, and the movie really have a lot of plot holes, pains me that they got a cellphone and go to school but they don't realize the date difference wtf, I don't bother bout the movie not explaining anything cuz magic watever but the characters not even try to contact each other is just no excuses, everything felt rushes and went downhill after the second half of the movie and the romance really aren't convincing and they handle it less mature compare to most romance animated movie. I can understand why the movie was praised and people have many reason to tell their friends to watch it, saying that the movie looks gorgeous, the romance is good or the characters are relatable etc (relatable not equals to good character btw), but when ppl try to convince their friends to watch Spirited away but they struggle to explain properly why they should watch it, that's when you know you NEED to watch it to know it's a masterpiece
YES! Exactly what I had in my mind. Your Name is just a visually appealing movie with generic storyline and characters. Spirited Away, on the other hand, was so magical and unique.
Did you know that "spirited away" Is the highest grossing anime movie in the US, so "spirited away" did better than "your name" in the US!

I watched both spirited away and your name. Both films are AMAZING but I cannot say which one was better out of the two. Both films are number 1 in my opinion!
Can you review more of the late Satoshi Kon's movies? It was a great loss to the Japanese animation industry that he passed away from cancer. I just want to keep his name alive. I haven't looked at any of your other reviews so maybe you have already done this.

Great review and enjoyed it a lot. But, you missed the most important point. It is really about the the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and the deadly Tsunami afterwards. So going back to save Mitsuha and the townspeople strikes a deeper cord. I lived in Tokyo during that time and saw many of the heartbreaking stories. Look up Miki Endo, an ordinary young lady who stayed at her post broadcasting evacuation warnings until she was swept away by the tsunami. Look at Okawa Elementary School, where the person in charge chose to keep his students and teachers at the school because it was designated and evacuation center. But in reality, it was only for ordinary tsunamis. They had enough time for even the smallest child to make it to the nearby higher ground, if they had decided to move. You can see these events replayed in the movie.
The movie is cathartic for Japanese audiences as who hasn't thought about going back in time to save someone or to prevent a disaster. That is why Grave of the Fireflies is to me the greatest anime even if I couldn't bear to watch it again.

Very nice analysis. I was initially disinterested as I've seen plenty of high school dramas and know all the tropes but now I think I will check it out. I don't expect it to to Spirited Away however as they are thematically very different. It'd be like comparing apples to oranges The visuals look as enjoyable as Wolf Children and I am getting some The Girl Who Leapt Through Time/Summer Wars/Millennium Actress vibes in a good way.
Fun fact you've mentioned some of the anime here and most of them are works of Taki Tachibana(your name) voice actor namely Spirited Away, Howl moving castle and summer wars.

I feel like your name beat spirited away in sales only but for many, many people spirited away is their childhood . your name was released in 2016 so it can't be incorporated in many ppls childhood other then those who r really young

I think any ghibli film beats your name with the empathy and music department tho. (ik this was only talking abt spirited away but ima broaden the subjects) ghibli gives more realistic feelings bcuz music isn't ALWAYS included. in reality, our lives don't have a soundtrack, but during emotional or dramatic times it can almost seem a certain beat and sound pumps our heart and pours thru ours minds. (heart beat and thoughts as our own soundtrack) ghibli really emphasizes this. they play orchestral music that is powerful and brings life to the characters. ghibli is perfection and I know for a fact that I could never enjoy watching your name more then spirited away or any other ghibli film

I honestly underestimated Your Name and I fell in love with that film, I'll even call it a masterpiece of Animation.
But Spirited Away, the detail and magic was truly beyond any animated film I've watched. Spirited Away is what made me question all those Disney movies i watched as a kid and taught me that Anime is not just for kids. It hold a special place in way too many people's hearts for a simple love story to trump it's greatness.

Just thinking, why people do not want to accept that Your name is one of the best anime in the century? They always compare it to A Silent Voice and the others... I know that they have different concept since A Silent Voice is relatable but Your Name gives an emotion that we can not clarify, right? Same as through with Spirited Away, even though it is Hayao Miyazaki's work and from Studio Ghibli's, we should know how to compare things since we have the freedom. I know we have the freedom to give opinion to someone, something, somewhere, etc. but is it right to compare Your Name to Spirited Away? And if it is just a comparison then is Spirited Away really just won your hearts? I know it has tons of meanings but Your Name includes science that makes heart felt... How did they use it? Well it depends on you guys if you comprehensively watch it. Actually, it is also enjoyable and not cheesy unlike the other romantic anime, it also puts logic/plot holes in it so can we admit that Your Name can beat Spirited Away overall? I am not encouraging you guys as Hayao Miyazaki fans but are you guys sure that it is right to defend what you want even though it can break the cage? I can say that Spirited Away is Overrated...

I still prefer spirited away even if my favorite miyazaki is kiki's delivery service and my favorite animation movie is wolf children. But your name is very very great. Plus, for me, it shows us the best of shinkai's visuals: an attention to the places and backgrounds, all those beautiful lens flares and his work on blurs. This movie have incredible pictures
