  • Installation of RCI Aluminum Motor and Transmisson Skid Plates
Replacing composite factory skid plates with metal skid plates from RCI Offroad. Fit was tight but they installed without problems. Excluding painting, install time was about an hour.
Suggest raising the vehicle makes it easier to get to all the hardware, floor jack to raise the skid plates, and a helper to hand you mounting hardware. Skid plates aren’t heavy so you don’t need any of these.
Don’t ever intend to go rock crawling or hardcore off road with the pickup. Basically stock and main use will be hauling lumber and groceries. Most off road will be for camping, but you never know when a trail or road suddenly gets bad and you have no choice but to go thru.
Aluminum instead of steel for weight, don’t want to do anything to affect ride height or gas economy as 99.9% of the time it will be on pavement. ¼” aluminum will have most of the strength of 3/16” steel but will be more likely to crack or break instead of bending like steel in an impact. These skid plates are to take damage instead of the vehicle when I do something bad.
Didn’t show the painting but cleaned everything in alcohol to remove oil, dirt, and fingerprints. One coat of self-etching primer, two coats of automotive primer, and three coats of Krylon (not sponsored) satin black paint. Its summer so even with painting early morning and late evenings when it was cool, the paint dried so fast it left a rough and splotchy finish. If you live in a dry climate, you could leave them bare. We do get some snow and we travel north salt and deicer is a concern.
    UPDATE:
Started hearing a rattle in the front end. Found the oil filter cover was vibrating. Put a couple layers of thick tape around the speed clips and that fixed it.
