My First Freeride Ski Competition & What I Learned | Vlog

  • First of all turn on subtitles. In this video, I share the whole experience of what it was like to do my first freeride competition. I show you how we where scouting lines, thinking about my strategy to keep up with the other young and gnarly competitors. Despite taking it sort of easy I managed to score high enough to get the 7th place despite backslapping in my first run. The main reason I made this video is to show how much fun it can be to join and go outside of your comfort zone even if the lines you see in this video is nothing compared to what they ski in the freeride world tour. You gotta start somewhere right? :P
    Key lessons learned from competing:
    - Easy to be cocky when scouting from the bottom. Expect shit to get rather scary standing ontop of your line.
    - Drops are bigger than you think and the landings might be flatter than it looks from the bottom.
    - Scout drops from as many angles as you can. Bottom, side, top.
    - Ski within your limits and build your confidence slowly and ski harder at your 2nd and 3rd comp with more confidence.
    - 30% of the competitors crashed 1 of their 2 runs = overestimated there skills. So if you stand your 2 runs you can easily beat the bottom 30%

Nice to hear from someone who’s stepping out of their comfort zone but still being smart about pushing their limits.

    Jens, some unsolicited advice (ref. 11:19), if I may; build up your core lower core and leg strength (quadriceps, hip flexors, etc.) and you will have better tucks throughout your jumps and more solid/stable landings, taking your skiing to the next level. Appreciate you taking the time to produce some genuinely great content. Congratulations also on your first comp! Now please enjoy some beers and the offseason in general. Cheers.

    Can anyone explain how these competitions work? As a freestyle skier i dont really understand what constitutes a good line other than the obvious cleanliness of the jumps/drops. If you're not doing tricks then how do they decide who skied the best?? to me it just looks like regular off-piste skiing, how do u do a better run than someone else if you don't fall over etc. ???

      I had a coach explain it to me a while back that generally the less snow under your feet the higher your score, that means navigating more technical rock sections or big airs will give you a good score.

    I tried some freeride this winter for the first time thinking i could do it... didnt look so steep from the bottom until i got up there.
    First jump revealed a huge sink hole where the landing area was, landed just a meter from it. I first saw it when i was already in the air.
    Next:
    Did not see a drop coming because it was so steep. Plan your routes good, very good! Before skiing, and know your limits. I was sure i was going to die but survived somehow. That was my last run this winter^-^ Next time its a more friendly route for me i hope

    How do you land when u drop big? Do you bend your knees, land on your heels, or what do you do?

    • @hannes_mlbx9599
      @hannes_mlbx9599 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to land so that all parts of the ski touch the ground at the same time. If you should land a bit back seated or suck it up a bit with your back depends on the snow conditions, but you should mostly take it with your knees. Just make sure to fully extend before landing and stay focused.

    • @ColoradoStreaming
      @ColoradoStreaming 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Practice doing a ton of power cleans at the gym with dumbells. Landing a big drop is pretty much the same mechanics. Keep your eyes up, keep your core engaged and consciously feel your body absorb the forces of the landing. The biggest thing is to keep your core engaged, its your abs that keep your body from flopping a bad way resulting in a ragdoll.

    • @StompItTutorials
      @StompItTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Ski a somewhat easy line where you got a +95%-100% chance of doing the full line without any crashes. This so you can build confidence for future competitions.
      Visualize the line many times you know in your head exactly where and how to ski. The more real you make the visualization the more powerful.
      Control your nerves by breathing slowly. You can try box breathing like a navy seal.
      Lastly, Have fun and Stomp It!
