I met Danny once, back in 2002, I think it was, at the Majestic Bar at around 1am during the Cannes Film Festival. The place was packed and he politely asked if he could join us by taking the seat next to me on a couch. Introduced himself as Danny and we just launched into a conversation about movies which lead to soundtracks. I had no fucking clue who he was. NONE. He said he was a composer and was at the festival supporting a friend who had a film in competition. At the end of the night he insisted on paying the bar bill even though he didn't drink and that was it. About a year later, I think it was, I saw him being interviewed on TV about the Simpsons. It hit me like a ton of bricks. That's DANNY! The guy I met at Cannes! Had no fucking clue. One of the nicest guys I ever met. So genuine and polite and friendly. Great guy.
Such a great story! I would love to have met him, still would! He is reclusive from the public eye as i can tell over the years. It was never about fame with him, all about the artistry. Tell me more about that meeting, sounds super cool.
Alistair Cookie just an awesome story about a nice casual evening I am sure he was looking for!! Love this song, such great memories attached to it from my college days at SACRAMENTO State University!
What's ironic is that not only are Oingo Boingo no longer together, but this venue (Gibson Amphitheater) is also gone, they tore it down to make room for some Harry Potter nonsense
I’m 16 and I got into Oingo Boingo cause of my dad and he found them because he went to college in L.A. in the 80’s and heard a song playing in a record store. If I could time travel to any date in time this would be it.
Oingo Boingo was my first favorite band as a child…”We close our eyes” is still my favorite song; it will forever remind me of riding in car with twin sister our my mom & dad…miss our parents. Rip mom & dad.
It was unbelievable! I was there both nights, and I think the entire audience went temporarily (or not) insane! I felt sorry for the people who'd already left to beat traffic. BOY, did they miss out! Truly a special special night (or two).
It’s all about the horns it’s why old funk bands still tour today. Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Ohio Players, etc. Horns set the beat everyone else just keeps up. Love all those bands Bar Kays being my fav. Saw AWB in a small bar in New Hope PA with a 12 piece band with five horns. Pick up the Pieces literally blew my hair back.
Oingo was always amazing. Danced, danced, danced all night long.....saw them many a Halloween, at Universal Amphitheatre, Irvine Meadows....Couldn't beleive they broke up.....what the hell was there to do on Halloween without an Oingo show? It was madeness and insanity of the best sort!
I used to work at a furniture store back in 1999...this very video was on one of the tv demo tapes and I used to play it every morning before we opened...LOVE THIS SONG!
Not to mention, Danny has hearing damage that apparently can't be helped, and he's not about to risk whatever hearing he has left to play in Oingo Boingo, no matter how much he enjoyed it, and he did. Enjoy it, I mean. (And you're right, the money for composing is probably pretty damned good.)
I saw OB at the Agora Ballroom (basically a large bar) in Htfd CT back in '86. I've been to a lot of concerts and it was still one of the best concerts I've ever seen to this day. I was completely blown away at the musicianship. Was right in front and got to high-5 Danny too!
TBone, Incredible. I and a friend, high schoolers at the time, faked our way into DJing a punk spot at WESU for a couple summers. When tix for that show went on sale, I said to my pal, ‘we’re going to get Danny to do a station ID.’ I called the Agora and spoke to a few people and eventually, someone called back and said we were to meet him backstage and show us upstairs, where I first ran into Sam and we started chatting. I see this red headed guy coming up the stairs but he had glasses so I kept talking with Sam. My friend starts tugging at my shirt and says hey man, it’s Danny. I wheeled around and he smiled and shook our hands. We didn’t have anything to record on so i had my teac tape deck and a cheap mic borrowed from music class. Danny looked at it for a second and just went ahead with it. He then invited us for sound check and we stayed pressed against the stage for the rest of the night. Agree, it was the best show I’ve seen to date. I remember Danny saying at some point, ‘Hey, you guys aren’t supposed to know us that well out here!’ Amazing show.
Come back Mr. Elfman. Put Mr. Burton and Depp on the sidelines for a while and come play with us. It's almost Halloween!! Better hurry. It's OK if you skip LA, just come to Anaheim.
FYI My Ms funeral is tomorrow she had a stroke my nephew's grandma danyy elfman I said I know My sister is thirty years old and says who is oingo bongo I almost kicked her but she knew who Danny elfman was
I was on the East Coast when this concert happened. However, I picked up the 2 CD album, and I must have listened to it more than a hundred times. Such a great way to finish a band.
HALLOWEEN SPECIAL. Oingo BOingo with Danny Elfman at the helm. "Insanity". This is a glimpse into the abyss. If you have truly looked into the dark corners of your mind....terrifying. It is no trick nor is it a treat!
Matthew Allen Lufcy really? Because I loved his voice here to be honest. It's the energy that makes up for it big time that I don't even notice the years of wear and tear.
Danny did what all, but few true classical musicians do--he said what he meant, and added a beat. Another genius artist...go figure...he will outlast his time.
Well I think he said that he tapped out a tune to his curious daughter when he came up with dead man's party. She was asking about some drum related product and he went to show her and accidentally tapped out a tune that inspired deadmans party.
After writing a few movie scores he said he was embarrassed writing dead man's party. Now after his last few movie scores were not that good he is back playing with oingo boingo
I geuss theres still some of use that wern't too old for this.....was good ...reminds me of my cousin and his surfer freinds ..listening to music and watching surf videos...so simple then?..:)

Nice story true or not. He looks like good lad.
I'm so glad the boys finally got the recognition they deserve when a couple days ago LA officially declared Oingo Boingo Day.
What is the date?

Halloween isn't the same without Oingo Boingo.
Amen.
It certainly is not. That's why we started doing what we do 18 years ago. Of course we're not them, but we do our best to keep the music alive!
DeadMansParty CA thank you! I wish you'd make your way to Texas. Peace, health and happiness to you all. ✌🤘
DeadMansParty CA Johnny Vato, too.
It may not be the same anymore but we keep the music alive and keep the party alive ourselves that's what keeps their legacy alive I like to think so
I was at this show...the very last one, Halloween 1995. 3 1/2 hours of just Boingo. It was completely nuts.
Dale Sanders dam i was only a year old. where was this? and so is there no hope of hearing elfman
Dale Sanders hearing elfman play this I mean ever in concerrt
Me too! :)
Huh!? Whatever ...
JELS!!
Danny Eflmann is a musical genius. Hence his second career. I grew up to the 80's music. OIngo Boingo was out there.
I was at the Vegas show before this one on the final tour- STILL to this day 2022, this was the best live show I have ever seen.
What's ironic is that not only are Oingo Boingo no longer together, but this venue (Gibson Amphitheater) is also gone, they tore it down to make room for some Harry Potter nonsense
So was 5th row at Los Angeles Amphitheater gone did you hear his wife Fonda in back ground when she checked his mustache?
Incredible concert
Was that at the Aladdin Theater?

If I could time travel to any date in time this would be it.
I saw them live for the first time in 82 at UCI in Irvine but have been listening to them since 79. A truly unique group for us nerds from the 80s.
Ivan Parra The Mystic Knights of The Oingo Boingo.
Not from the 80s but I love em
Oingo Boingo was my first favorite band as a child…”We close our eyes” is still my favorite song; it will forever remind me of riding in car with twin sister our my mom & dad…miss our parents. Rip mom & dad.
Seeing him perform this at the Hollywood Bowl 20 years to the day of the last time he played it was amazing!
It was unbelievable! I was there both nights, and I think the entire audience went temporarily (or not) insane! I felt sorry for the people who'd already left to beat traffic. BOY, did they miss out! Truly a special special night (or two).
I would LOVE to have this song played at my Funeral!
Mistah Bryan HELL YEAH!
At my funeral I would like songs like this, girls, lot of food, beer, whisky, wine....ALL things of course paid be me...The dead man...
I'll wait for an invitation to arrive
Yes ¡vivan los muertos!
Chuck reference?
Usually when groups get older they don't sound as good.. This is one of the few awesome exceptions. Danny still sounds as good as he ever did.

Here i am. 2022 listening to Oingo Boingo.
Such a classic band, one of a kind. Now I see Danny in the music credits for several movies. It would be very cool to see them get together again.
By far one of the best bands of all time. They need to do another world tour.
Insane synth bass player... crazy bassline and the guy still sings.
John Avila has more energy and talent than any mortal man should be able to contain.

Such a singer. On top of everything else.
What a great time it must be to be there live. Great band.
Always liked this song
This is one of the best songs I own. Can't listen to it and be in a bad place. I am so glad I found this video.
Historically one of the greatest bands ever

I loved the tonality in the alto saxophone, tanner sax, and the trumpet in the beginning with perfect pitch, and and how they came in in sync.
First and only time I saw them was at 1983 US Festival. Bought all albums after the show I was so impressed and continued to follow them.
I was at this show! Was simply fkn Amazing! Miss the group and all they brought to LA and fun times at Halloween.
I miss this band every Halloween.
Simplesmente perfeito🎉
A really great band!

This takes me to my happy place... love me some Oingo Biongo!
The only band I EVER paid to see was OINGO BOINGO. God, how I miss going to their concerts, especially the holloween shows.

well supposedly he suffers from irreversible hearing damage, and he believes performing live would make it worse.
He performed this last night at the Hollywood Bowl!
+victor terrero he played this at the Hollywood Bowl
I believe he said he would do it, but he has hearing loss damage and believes a live show will make it worse. He would know.
Danny Elfman is a Musical Genius...
I think it's pretty cool that i got drum lessons from Johnny Vatos :)
such such beautiful footage thank you so much for this!
I love how he's a California guy :) Always loved him and this band. Grew up listening but never got to see them :(((

I love this awesome love song, reminds of the break up song from the Greg Kihn Band. I heard this on 91X one time then on nightmare on elm steet.
I saw this concert in DC. Danny Elfman is a genius. AND! The rest of his crew Bartek, Gibbs, Avile, all of them! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sad 😔 we’re all getting old.
The original version and this live version are equally great.
And don't forget the Ritz live version
Ball of fire & energy, that copper-top boy. Danny the Dynamo!
