Oingo Boingo Live At The Ritz 1985, NOT 1987 (Reupload) [Best Quality]

  • Lucky to have found this one after the first upload mysteriously disappeared. Contrary to popular belief, this show is from 1985 and not 1987. At the start of Weird Science, Danny says "here's a song we did for a movie this year". Weird Science was released in 1985. There is some evidence that other songs such as "Gratitude" were performed here but any video footage of it has been lost, so it isn't here.
    Tracklist:
    00:00 - Dead Man's Party
    6:13 - Who Do You Want To Be
    9:31 - Just Another Day
    14:35 - Grey Matter
    20:00 - Stay
    23:26 - Weird Science
    28:10 - Goodbye, Goodbye

    I saw them at the Long Beach Arena for a New Year's Eve concert in 1985. At some point after midnight Danny Elfman said, "As long as you can keep taking it, we can keep dishing it out," and he wasn't kidding. They played for over 3 1/2 hours. Such great energy and musicianship. Definitely one of the greatest concerts I've been to.

    Holy ship. When the first song started I thought, aw no, they are lip syncing to a backing track. Then I saw the horn and string section, holy hell. They're actually doing that complex arrangement live, all the layers and fills. Even the drum machine part is played a live drummer. And tight AF.

      What you are watching my friend, are 8 members of the original members of the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo out of LA led by Danny's brother Richard. Richard leaves, Danny is now lead singer and songwriter and he and the 7 members with him on stage become what is known as a ska-new wave Rock N' Roll BAND, Oingo Boingo! Band is the key word here. These are REAL Artist not performers! Danny writes, produces, and performs HIS songs!!! It doesn't take nineteen writers and 6 producers. like what we have today! This is REAL music at it's best!

    • @pimenteldavid84
      @pimenteldavid84 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@dennisjashenskijr1546 Indeed. Not many people alive today understand what Oingo Boingo actually was: a rock band made from the zombified corpse of a theatre troop.
      All of these people are exceptionally skilled in multiple ways. They could move, they could play, they could sing; they had flare, they had style, they had synchronicity.
      This was like bringing an army to an anthill: rock music had no idea what hit it.

      I think people in the know realize it, but the general music fans, not so much. When bands get this good they make complex music sound easy. Yes, the underlying complexity has its attraction, but most don't realize that's part of what' pulling them in. In the end it's easy level and smile giving melodies they latch onto.

    • @sooeycune895
      @sooeycune895 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@craigjohnson4302 why does it matter? Arbitrary opinion is what sells best, who cares if people do or don’t understand the complexity. If you enjoy the music you enjoy it, doesn’t matter how well you do or don’t understand it. Most people that listen to music don’t know anything about it. Just like how most people who watch movies, look at paintings, architecture, etc. don’t know anything about it. The beauty of anything that is intrinsically art related is that you don’t have to understand it to enjoy it. So if you understand the complexity of it… cool. It’s not bad that people don’t

    This was one of the finest groups of players to come together in the Bay Area during the whole 77-90 era. They could play, baby, I mean really play. I saw them live twice, once at a New Years party, and they were smoking hot. Every song was perfect. It's crazy how good the sound quality is on this show, all the instruments and harmonies coming through with great clarity. Those 2 big drum hits John plays when Danny sings "Don't run away its only me" on Dead Man's Party, I can't believe the sound on that. I'm not sure if it's the way his kit is mic'ed or the acoustics of the venue or what. There are a lot of more recent live performances by heavier bands I've listened to where the drums sound weak in comparison to that.

    • @time8871
      @time8871 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I figured it out, that drum sound is enhanced by a sound effect created by the keyboard player.

    • @echo-trip-1

    • @jamescarter3196
      @jamescarter3196 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like they may have used the sound off the mixing board, instead of just the camera mics or something equally-basic which is usually responsible for the weaker sounds you've heard elsewhere.
