This is the first Formula One race that I ever saw on television here in the UK at the age of six. Sparked a love affair with the sport that exists to this very day!
Definitely miss Adelaide as a venue. Melbourne's lovely, but it's just not the same. Adelaide always felt like it threw a huge party when F1 came to town.

Thanks Barry for posting this. This year was my first experience of F1. I worked in a building on North Tce Adelaide in 1988, and to off set the iInconvenience’ of being located so close to the track our staff were given passes to go to see the practice session….. I’ll never forget walking out the office, going 50 meters, and …… there it was - Senna, Prost, the sights, the sounds, the speed….

I was 13 when I went to the first Adelaide GP in 1985, and was lucky enough to go to everyone of them. The sounds from those cars has lived in a very happy place in my head ever since. I have thousands of photos, but no videos, so this for me is very special. Thank you so much for these videos, and for bringing back the memories.

Thanks Matt........the sound and speed of the cars was amazing in this era of F1.The Adelaide track was brilliant and I really enjoyed the Grand Prix there in 1988, as you say great memories.........Regards Barry

Thanks for even being there then to record this the way you did. To then share with us here. It might not seem like much. But, despite a vested interest of actually living in Adelaide. Being very yonng then and going to the last few after this one. This to me seems like (i have watched alot out there of other race tracks and views) this gives the best actual feel. Speed, lung bursting sound i have seen anywhere. You cannot comprehend how fast they are until you witness them in real life. I would say the Adelaide circuit allowing you so close allows this to be a bit easy to demonstrate. Those 90 degree corners they were going 160km/h! When they were breaking, back firing down shifting or just gliding into the corners. Esp the long straights. It was a blur. But, this really gives the sheer rocketships these incredible drivers were able to navigate with.
I am really grateful to find this. It really brought back the enormous respect i had for the drivers. We all think we can do that. Dream about it etc. But, humbleness in their talent was how i was after that.
    Thanks Barry :)
Hope you enjoyed being down here then to. We hate Melb / Vic for stealing OUR race haha.

I had a fantastic time in OZ and the Adelaide Grand Prix was a highlight of my trip. The circuit was the best best street circuit there has been in F1.The cars and drivers were awseome with the likes of Senna Prost Mansell etc........Albert park isn't as good in my opinion and yes I too would have been gutted when they changed the Australian GP to Melbourne.

I am quite surprised by the quality of the footage. How did you have access to such cameras back in the day? I thought this kind of quality could only be captured by professional cameras in the 80s.

    • @samgiamarelos4524

@clintjohnson2245 gp's are auctioned to the highest bidders, hence resource rich countries getting gp's such as in the middle east,, Melbourne will always outbid adelaide , bigger city bigger finances, on top of that the saftey run off areas required nowadays makes Adelaide's original circuit utterly unworkable, not sure how Monaco achieves this, probably a special pass, . As sad as this is , Adelaide's 10 year reign was at the right place at the time, I agree an unforgettable period that in most minds trounces Melbourne, but its all different now, don't forget pre 90's garage teams could set up an f1 team, attempt to prequalify etc, now its just super rich juggernauts and factory teams. Adelaide was the equivalent of the garagistas. Its close to $100 million Australian fee to liberty f1 plus circuit construction and event expenses, flights and accommodation to teams etc. I dont watch f1 anymore

@@samgiamarelos4524 yeah that's a pity. Thanks for the info anyway - I stopped watching F1 around the late 90s. Still watched the odd race now and again -just not the same as in the 1980s!
