Welcome back to another new home update! This is the 2nd to last home update video which means we are getting so close to that empty home tour!
Wow I am so appreciative for you sharing all these details in your experience building a custom home there! It definitely was not even close to this bad where I used to live which really makes me appreciate all the subcontractors that I've had experience with in the past and it opens my eyes to what could happen if I ever built a custom home where I live now.
The builder I worked with hired experts in their fields and if a mistake happened, which was rare in his case, that trade would have to correct it at their own cost or they would be back charged for their mistake to be corrected but it was never the problem of the homeowner. I've never seen this many mistakes in custom building and frankly it shouldn't be happening. It should not be your problem or that you are out of luck because it was already done. Even other builders I knew things weren't this bad even when there were mistakes. Always that trade had to fix whatever it was if it was their fault or the fault of the builder. If it was a homeowner's fault that was a different story. It is the builders job to stay on top of these trades and check in on the job daily or have a project manager that does. Crazy. I am so very sorry you have to deal with all this stress! Praying for you guys and sending lots of love!

My husband and I are very detailed and if we were building our custom home I would be a total b**ch toward the builder especially since my husband owns his own construction company. I would be like no you can pay to do it correctly. For Pete's sake, your giving them pictures to follow and they can't even do that right. They should know by now you are very meticulous on how your house needs to be they should be "asking" if they are doubtful in any way. I feel like blasting that guy they made you loose your warrantee. All I can say is they are soooooo lucky they are dealing with you nice couple instead of me! I'm so mad for you
Hi Ashley. I think when you're having a custom house built and spending so much money, you have the right to be picky and you certainly have to keep an eye out on the workers. Communication gets crossed at times. Nothing worse than living with regrets because of someone else's mistakes. It's your house. You guys do what you have to do. People that have never built a brand new house have no idea just how complicated and frustrating it can be. Hopefully soon the five of you will be all moved in. Looking forward to it.
I agree! I honestly think you should change your kitchen backsplash. You'll always regret it if you don't. We've had three new-build homes built. Change things now, delay moving in, and get exactly what you want! I was too nice with each build and regret some of my choices that I had to settle with due to builder's mistakes.
I agree with changing out the backsplash in the kitchen. It’s their mistake and believe me you may say it’s ok but honestly hearing you say this is going to be white and these are going to be white and then the backsplash not what you want…I would have them change it and they have to deal with the cost due to their mistake. Also, the flooring with no underlayment I just wanted to say who in the world is your builder!!! Best of luck.

Good morning Ashley the people criticizing you for being picky probably have no idea what it’s like to custom build. It’s a very stressful process. Life isn’t always a fairytale, things always happen just keep your head up. I can’t wait for you to move in and start decorating 😍
Ashley, everything looks gorgeous! I would definitely make them redo the kitchen backsplash and I'd insist on making them cover whatever the warranty covers for however long it would be. That way if anything happens and you would have filed a warranty claim, they would take care of it. Either that or make them redo the floors at their expense. They disregarded your wishes and need to make it right. I know you all are anxious to get into your new house, but if it was me, I'd regret not making them fix it. I can't wait to see the finished product!
I agree that when you are building a custom home and spending above builder grade, you should get what you want. I absolutely encourage you to have them redo the kitchen tile. Your concept of a variation in colors is much more high end than that flat white look, they put in. Even if it has to wait until after you moved in, I would live with a couple of days of chaos of having them rip out the tile and put the correct tile in so that you have exactly what you want. And the builder should absorb the cost. If you had changed your mind, that would be one thing, but in your case, they did not give you what you wanted and paid for.
That on top of the floor that they lost the guarantee for. I mean that is probably $40 if not more just for the floors.
The kitchen tile would upset me too. But the moisture barrier not being installed causing the floor warranty to be lost? I'd have lost it lol. We're hoping to do a custom build in the near future, so lots of good tips, thank you! Looks like we'll have to be on site frequently!
I could get over the tile, because it still looks good. But the lost warranties on something that expensive, lets just say it would not have been pretty.
If you don’t 100% love the kitchen tiles I’d make them change it now. It’d be a shame to live with the regret every time you looked at them. Your house is gorgeous!
I totally agree with you being there and watching how things are going. My dad built custom homes and he really encouraged the owners coming and checking on the progress. It’s easier to change things right away then wait and hear the owners are disappointed.
Don’t ever apologize for wanting what you want. It’s your money and your house and if people don’t like it, they don’t need to watch. I guarantee if they were in your shoes, they would be doing the same exact thing because nobody wants to pay a lot of money for the wrong thing. I have absolutely loved these house update videos and seeing all the changes on Instagram as well. Cannot wait for the house to be done. Keep up the great work, and I for one will be watching ❤❤❤
Ashley, you are much more patient than I ever would be! You guys are paying lots of hard earned money for a custom home and it needs to be everything you want! The kitchen tile thing? I would have it done the way you had planned. The warranty issue on your floor being voided would really be a “bone of contention” for me. You have had a lot of stress but yet remain positive. Give yourself kuddos for that. Seriously. It is wonderful to follow your process and to learn from your honesty. I truly admire your work ethic and love you and Chase’s personalities. Remember who is paying to have this house become your home. Make sure it is done the way you want. Hi Ashley, I’d probably be there everyday all day😂… the second you step away, shortcuts may be taken, slacking, not working full days or mistakes made from the way you had directed something to be done. Building a home would be a huge undertaking imo. It’s gonna be BEAUTIFUL!!🏡

Amazing girl! Congratulations! Also, I would absolutely have them fix the backsplash. It’s a room that you use so often and everyone sees when they come to your house, it will also match the fireplace more. You can technically close on the house while they fix it.

Wait, that messed up tile is NOT being too picky. My husband does renovations and that would never fly! It should have been fixed! The tile in the laundry is just gorgeous, I definitely think that could be fixed pretty easy. I wouldn't leave it, but that's just me! Call me high maintenance, but tile is EXPENSIVE! You're allowed to want what you ordered😭 First world problems, of course, but that kind of thing should not be happening. Best wishes on your move in date.

I absolutely LOVE your home! I hate to hear that things weren't executed correctly by the installers. Btw, you have every right to complain AND have it corrected 💯😉👍 It's your concept & money, period. I agree with the kitchen tile. How much longer will it take them to re-do it? It truly amazes me how people don't take ownership of the work they do. In ANY profession, it's important to do your job as if it were your family. I work in health insurance & I deal with stressful situations. As soon as I'm presented with the problem, member is desperate, I stop everything and I behave as if it's my family. I can't tell you how many times the person is grateful. We should all handle our jobs that way. I'm not perfect but I do my best to serve people. (I'll get off my soapbox)😂

Agree - you are 100% doing the right thing by being there as often as possible. It’s the ONLY way to catch builder mistakes early (and there will ALWAYS be snags - the key is to catch them sooner so it’s less time wasted correcting it). Also, you will be surprised how quickly they can get it cleaned up and ready for walk through. You’re in the home stretch - hang in there, it looks beautiful!!

I'd have them redo the tile and pay for a hotel if your move in date is delayed. After that, ask a lawyer about the flooring warranty. Lastly, who is paying for that $1500 mailbox redo? It's your money, you can be picky!

I would DEFINITELY have them redo the kitchen backsplash tile! You paid for your vision….you should get your concept of your dream kitchen in my opinion. Not to mention the backsplash is a major design aspect! 😎

I am so sorry for the challenges you are having with your building process. I feel for you. You are absolutely right to be picky. It is your home. And to have someone say "oh well, we aren't going to do what you wanted" or "oops, we used the wrong tile in the kitchen" is very arrogant of them. So disappointing. I can understand your frustration, to go through the process and still not end up with what you wanted. And I'm glad you're not faking it. Real is best. I hope when it's all said and done (I am a few videos behind) you are exceedingly happy in your home!

Hello Ashley, everything looks beautiful. I would have been a little upset about the backsplash in the kitchen but you know what. I think it looked turned out pretty good. Everything is coming together and I love the painted white brick. It's gorgeous. Can't wait to see the end. Never apologize for being honest. Ever building a house is a long tedious adventure. Too many people in the pot so you really have to be on top of what you're doing and you've done an excellent job and when things have gone wrong, you've had it fixed. It's a shame that some of the things can't be fixed, but they seem to have turned out pretty good. Keep us in the loop. I know I enjoy all your videos and everyone else does too. Should change the backsplash right away, even if your kitchen is unavailable the first few days after you moved in, few take aways are always better than living with regrets every time you will see your backsplash.... and as it is an open plan, it will be a constant reminder.

I've seen custom builds before and it's stressful just watching it so I can't even imagine what it must be like actually going through it. Ashley, I’m glad you’re being picky with things with your house you’re right you had it custom built and it’s a lot of money. I am surprised that the builders aren’t keeping the garage cleaner than they are. I see stuff that I would go ballistic on but that’s me anyhow, I love watching you and your husband and daughter going through this. Sorry there’s been so many bugs.

Hi Ashley, I love watching your updates, my husband and I are currently building a custom home in Waxahachie Tx and I've been keeping an eye on everything. I would make them redo the kitchen tile, don't settle, it was their mistake and they need to make it right. You have a right to be picky, it's your house. In the end it is going to be beautiful. I'm sorry that you have had to deal with so much but be tough and don't settle. Can't wait to see the finished home tour. Thanks for sharing.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your new home. It is gorgeous! I'm so excited for you to move in and decorate. You have every right to be picky, it's your home and your $$'s. I'm excited about a custom-building video. Regarding a circular driveway, keep this in mind...we have one and if a lot of cars are parked in it, and someone in the middle wants to leave, it's chaos with moving vehicles. Also, random people use it as a turn around so that they don't have to go all the way to the end of our street, and when delivery trucks do it (yes, they use it as a turn-around as well, they have run over our sprinkler heads numerous times. I think you made the better choice.

yes building a custom home needs lots of visits and guidance along the journey. Things happen quickly even though it seems you are waiting on things all the time too. It is a gorgeous home and I love every detail you did. Congratulations. I know what you mean about being homeless. I actually lived in my realtor's basement apartment 17 days in between needing to be out of your house that sold and getting into the new home. Luckily our realtor is a live long friend and his basement was available. They even let our 100 pound airedale stay with us too.
It is beautiful, I cannot believe what you have had to deal with, I would have freaked at the tile mistakes, but in the end, it's just gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this journey it's been great.
