Hi Mate. Paul from Sydney. You have to be the best teacher in VR. Love your style and humor. But mostly the way you explain and give examples of foreseen problems. I'm 65 been into computers since 1980. But this VR stuff is a whole new world. After having problems with Quest and returning 2 headsets. I totally love my new Pico 4. Have watched most of your videos. Thank you and I really appreciate your help. Keep up the good work.

very well explained. i know i make this more complicated than it probably should be. Some small additions from my personal experience with both Quest 2 and Pico 4:
    - Always set STEAM VR resolution manually to 100%, because any additional scaling within STEAM uses more VRAM and even if you lower the resolution it can actually lower your performance due to additional GPU time and VRAM needed to scale the image. Using 100% ensures, that the game renders exactly in the resolution that Virtual Desktop can process without any additional overload.
    - If you have more than one monitor connected, switch off or disable those additional monitors, because these can actually lower your performance due to the fact that the GPU needs to handle all of them in the background.
    - If you do not need to run any additional software like OBS in the background, always enable "use optimal resolution" in the VD settings, because this gives you a little bit of additional VRAM and performance.
    - If you do not play high responsive games like sports games or BEAT SABER always enable "video buffering", so you won't see microstutters. If you play those games, switch it off and see if it works without stutters.
    - Test out the maximum bitrate you can use on your network first and then set this bitrate manually while turning off "dynamic bitrate" option in the VD desktop app. If your network latency is around 10ms or less it's fine.
    - Switch off SSW and find out first which combination of resolution and framerate works best for each game or in general. Use the performance overlay to monitor your framerate. This number should be fixed at your target fps and not drop a couple of frames every couple of seconds. If your framerate is only dropping a little bit, then lower in-game graphics settings first and then VD framerate before you deal with resolution and SSW.
    - Do not use SSW automatic, because this mostly results in stuttering game performance since Virtual Desktop will adjust this per frame, so in some games it switches back and forth causing those stutters. SSW actually tells the game to render at half framerate and interpolates missing frames in the headset (not on PC like STEAM VR motion smoothing does).
    - if your framerate drops dramatically and you do not need fast response times lower VD framerate and see if you can play the game comfortably. If it's still not running smooth try to switch SSW to on and probably increase framerate again, since 90/2=45 fps should render faster than 72fps. Only use SSW if you do not bother about image distotion, blurry moving edges and artefacts you will see when using SSW.
    - You may start with quality = high, SSW disabled and framerate 72Hz with H264 (AMD : use HEVC because of broken drivers) at fixed 100Mbit which is the best medium setting with a decent resolution. Then try to go higher using the performance overlay or lower if your PC struggles.
The GPU specs in Virtual Desktop are more or less useless, since it depends on the game which resolution you can actually run. Even on a RTX 2070S you can run some games in "godlike" (wihch is 1:1 pixel density on the Pico 4). Other won't run even at the lowest possible resolution without SSW being turned on.
For reference, here are the render resolutions of VD (Pico 4) in pixels:
    Potato: 1488 x 1488
    Low: 1776 x 1776
    Medium: 2064 x 2064
    High: 2544 x 2544
    Ultra: 2736 x 2736
    Godlike: 3120 x 3120
The Quest 2 resolutions are only slighty different and godlike is missing.
please note, that these are NOT the display resolutions and that this is not supersampling. In fact godlike matches exactly the maximum resolution of the Pico 4 displays and Ultra (2688 x 2784 for Q2) on the Quest 2.
Unfortunately Virtual Desktop does not offer fine tuning for the resolutions and on some machines that is really a shame. On my RTX 3070Laptop "medium" runs smooth, but is just too blurry, whereas "high" causes stutters. "medium" renders about 4.2 Mpixel whereas "high" renders 6,4 Mpixel. That is a huge 50% increase and has a significant effect on performance. Especially for midrange GPUs there should be some sort of fine tuning available. Hopefully the developer does include this in the near future.
okay, this made it much more complicated, sorry.

I have been told directly by Guy Godin (developer) that you should leave "automatically adjust bitrate" checked unless your using a cloud based PC.

    • @ProgrammistMusic
      @ProgrammistMusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MacInVR this may work in most cases and automatic bitrate is useful if your connection speed is not stable. But if your connection speed is solid and you know the working bitrate there is not need for automatic adjustment, since this produces additional overhead, although very minimal i guess.
From my experience automatic bitrate works better if i play on a PC, which is not on my network, but external. This is basically the same as cloud based and if the internet connection is going down (because my kids start downloading tons of stuff) VD can adjust the bitrate temporarely. But if is do this, i usually do not set the bitrate that high, but just about 50-60Mbit to minimize any fluctuations.
but again, if it works, one way or the other, it's fine anyway.

Got my Pico 4 glasses yesterday and just tested without facemask and eyes as close as possible, the difference is HUGE!
Then if you lift little from the strap going over your head to get the weight of your nose.
That made me think somebody should make similar type facemask for P4 than Quest pro has; that forehead cushion piece and maybe those little pieces on the sides to block light, VOILA. That would make the FOV and experience million times bigger and better.
Have you tested that? This would be a huge improvement!

How can I determine if my Quest 2, and my PC, are using the same network and does the Quest 2 not connect automatically, (wirelessly), to my PC if I have already downloaded the Virtual Desktop Streamer App?. These may sound like simple enough questions but my knowledge of the VR world is woefully incomplete. I would add that I have not downloaded any other Apps to my PC. I'm very disappointed with the Pico 4 headset, the games are not optimised for the Pico resolution or maybe the Pico is not optimised.
I've been playing war planes Pacific on the Pico 4 natively and on the pc, and both options remain very blurry!
Currently even though pick has a higher screen resolution the games are sharper on the Quest 2!

Virtual Desktop is really good, way better than ALVR or AirLink, I've got an issue with it though that every minute or so a large network spike will cause a stutter, which ruins my gameplay, especially if I'm playing something like Beat Saber where every second is important. I tried everything, read every tip, made sure everything was correct, changed so many settings in my router couldn't fix it. So I recently bought a new router gonna see if that fixes it, because other than that problem everything with this app is perfect.
