      We have another XXT coming to the channel. I filmed it on Phils track and something bad happened…. Needless to say, waiting for the weather to get better and Harry’s track to open and get more video footage of it in action.

    Vintage Losi cars are very stylish and drive great. One thing i really like is the shocks are easier to rebuild than Team Associated. You just buy the cartridge and screw them right in. I think they still make them too which is good for us collectors.

    My first real rc truck was my Losi XXT which I got in 1995 and had converted to a XXT Cr Graphite Plus over the years of using it, then 10 or so years ago I went through all my spares and built up another XXT using my original parts. I’m glad I held onto them as they both are sentimental to me

    I love these old Losi’s. I don’t quite remember these ones, mabey I was a bit too young or not in the hobby quite yet. But I do remember wanting the xxxT so bad when they came out. And the Matt Francis edition. And I did actually get the blue spec xxxt. Remember those with the blue groove tires coloured blue for stock spec class. I wish I kept it. I’m on the hunt for a xxt or xxxt. Just to drive around a bit lightly here and there. And to have on the shelf!

    The Hydra-drive had the advantage of being able to smooth out power delivery on really rough tracks at the expense of adding quite a bit of driveline rotational inertia. It acted somewhat like a torque converter in a conventional automatic transmission, spinning a bladed "turbine" inside of a tight-fitting, liquid filled housing. The shear strength of the fluid could be changed (higher weight fluid) to make it slip less or more (lighter fluid).
    Smoother, well-groomed tracks didn't really favor its use, however. Neat option part to have, regardless.

    • @RCRetro
      @RCRetro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks for the info. So if you had a XXT with the hydra drive sytem, would you be able to take it off? Then I would have to source a slipper clutch for it or was there a slipper clutch plus the hydra drive with it?

    • @irritablearchitect
      @irritablearchitect 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RCRetro - Ari, Good question that I can only partially answer; IF I recall correctly, there WAS a slipper with the original Hydra-drive setup (somewhat redundant if you ask me), but I can't remember if there was a different top shaft for slipper-only setups or not. I DO believe there was a special spur gear that you had to use with the unit, so changing ratios was a bit more problematic and costly.
      There's got to be a bunch of Losi nerds out there who can be tapped for the definitive answer about this. Heck, you might be able to get some info from Gil Jr. on the subject.
      Good luck.

    • @bigpapapump8418
      @bigpapapump8418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@irritablearchitect I'm a Losi nerd! lol Yes, you could run either hydra-drive or not, in stock form. If the track was ultra-smooth (like in today's "offroad" world), then you would run the basic slipper, bc you'd have less rotational mass and less power loss. IF, HOWEVER, the track was a genuine offroad situation, as was typical in those days (i.e. washed out and rutted straights with grooves in the turns), then the Losi's with the hydra-drive KILLED everything else. Schumacher even came out with the "viscous drive" as a competing system. Even the AE drivers ran HD's on their RC10's - as you can see in the IFMAR 93 World's! The advantage of the hydra-drive came from the ability to not spin out in loose dirt. Right now you're thinking "duh....a slipper clutch is for that too", BUT the HD was like magic! It was like driving a full-size car with an automatic trans, in that you had so much forgiveness in the throttle. It would kind of spool-up under throttle and the car/truck was WAY less twitchy. REMEMBER...in those days, the tracks were very rough and loose/loamy.....and freakin' awesome imo. A great example of the HD's advantage can be seen on videos from the IFMAR Worlds from 1991, when Kyle Reed ran one of the first HD cars on a ProSE/XX hybrid. Every time the cars enter the washboard section of that very rough Detroit track, you can see Reed easy catch Masami's RC10/Stealth. That was the second part of the "magic" of the HD - you got forgiveness, or a kind of cushioning, when in a bumpy section, or during a braking section, that might otherwise tend to cause you to spin out or get kicked sideways from the rear tires locking up.

    • @irritablearchitect
      @irritablearchitect 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bigpapapump8418 - Thanks! That's what I remember about the Hydra-drive, they were killers on the rough, loose and bumpy tracks...REAL off-road racing! We both must be OLD to have remembered this stuff! Hahahahahahaha!!!

    • @bigpapapump8418
      @bigpapapump8418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@irritablearchitect Yeah, it's hard for me to believe just how long ago that was. But I tell you, and it is not just "good ol days" talk.... Something happened to RC around the millennium....it just isn't the same as it was back in the 90's. It's not as ....FUN... as it was. Maybe it's too serious now...I don;t know. I do know that the big-gun "offroad" drivers of today can't hack it on legit offroad tracks. They whine when they even go to an outdoor track. lol I mean CARPET?!?! REALLY!??

    I had a hydra drive for my xx and xxt. Was not good for stock racing since it added a ton of rotating mass. For mod racing it was money on really rough outdoor tracks but on smoother indoor tracks it really wasn’t needed.

      Saw this question you had posted to another hydra drive user. The system used both the slipper and hydra drive. You could pop off the hydra drive and just replace the slipper spring and thrust washer assembly from what I remember. The slipper spring on the hydra drive unit was shorter due to the exposed length of the top shaft when the hydra drive was keyed to the spur gear.

    You can make the wheel covers with a wheel with no tire, a heat gun, and a bolt that is the axle diameter. not really easy but doable. Thats how we did it back in the day of we wanted wheel covers (:

      If I were to get my hands on a LOSI with the Hydra Drive, I'll probably go a little bit more in depth but basically is very similar to a slipper clutch. Instead of tightening the nut or loosening the nut to set your RC to the various track conditions, the hydra drive is a clam shell filled with oil. To adjust it, you need to add different weight oil. I heard it was a pain to adjust because of that. It seems losi didn't keep it around to long. It started with the XX series and stoped with the XX series also. Then they went back to the the slipper clutch for the XXX series.
