  • In this episode of Jason's All Time Favorite RC Products, Jason highlights the racing scene of the early 1990's and the Traxxas SRT racing truck.
    Traxxas was a big part of competitive 1/10th scale racing in the early 90's, having several drivers making the A Main at the top events. The Traxxas SRT was available in 1994/1995 and had many great features of the top racing trucks of the time.
    Traxxas would go on and reinvent themselves again, cancelling their racing program and focusing on their RTR business which are still some of the most popular RC vehicles to this day.

      I got a Traxxas Hawk for my 13th birthday. Unfortunately I was little shit and peeked in my Dads bedroom when he went to the bathroom and he was building it for me. It was a few days befit I got it in my birthday. They never knew I ruined the surprise for them. But he should have let me build it lol.

    Glad you shared this about Traxxas most people were never aware that they had a race program back in the early 90's. I remember reading those articles and seeing the ads in Radio Control Car Action magazines thanks for the trip down memory lane. I might hunt for one to do some vintage racing with.

      But they never won the Ifmar Championship, so I don't take Traxxas serious.

    • @Shellbackrc
      @Shellbackrc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RC-ty5ym just because the DRIVER came up short from winning a World Championship doesn't mean Traxxas shouldn't be taken serious because as Jason said in the video the other manufacturers were looking at Traxxas more seriously. Kyosho didn't even make the A Main in 91 for the Worlds but Traxxas was, a championship sure is great for marketing but the driver still has to win. As the saying goes " acar is only as good as the driver".

    I really miss the body style of the 90s racing trucks, the SRT was one of the best looking. I remember traxxas's pro racing tier kits were always priced substantially less than their Associated/Losi counterparts, which always kept me eyeballing one saving my allowance and lunch money for my next kit.. I remember the SRT being 40$ less than the 10T, despite using more expensive design for components like the big bore shocks.

    • @kingchakazulu7762

    Traxxas and stadium truck racing DOMINATED in the 1990s at least in the Midwest. I had a Traxxas Eagle, heck almost everyone did in my area. Everywhere I went there were 3 times as many stadium trucks as buggies. Unfortunately by the time the SRT came out, nearly everyone had switched over to a RC10T or a Losi XXT. Only one guy at the local track actually bought one and it just couldn't hang so he got a Losi within a few months time. I still have 2 Eagles and a XXT in my basement, good times!

    I was introduced to Rick Vehlow in 1993 or 94 when I started racing at Hobby Warehouse in Sacramento. I had a Blue Eagle LS, and being new to the hobby I needed help getting it set up, so someone at the track put me in touch with Rick. He was very helpful and he even sold me all of his Traxxas stuff including the handmade prototype parts and cars (which I wish I had kept). With his help I quickly became much more competitive in the stock classes, but I normally avoided modified because we had about a half dozen Losi and Associated factory drivers at that track, so I was just in their way. When I bought the SRT, I had Rick come out to the track to help me dial it in and he hated the design. He spent a couple hours fiddling with the steering and suspension geometry to make it work better, and then he ran it in the modified class that night, which he easily won. Of course, my friends at the track all gave me crap since it was now obvious that it was me who was slow, not the truck. LOL. Shortly after that, Rick was sent a Losi XX and his very first night out with it he beat Matt Francis just a few months before Matt won the IFMAR World's. I don't know what ever happened to Vehlow, but that guy understood everything about how to dial in a car and he was as good a driver as there was in the world in those days.

    So glad for the trip down memory lane Jason. Traxxas sponsored a few of the locals up till 1995 I remember. I was in Louisiana at the time. RedDirt Raceway. Good memories and clean running car. There were a few of us running the TRX-1 and the SRT. I wish I still had it. I still think that car would be good today on longer tracks. I thought the truck liked wet racks, much like the clay tracks today. Most the stuff we had in the south is outdoor. Miss those golden days.

    Brings back big memories. Back then I was TOTALLY die hard Traxxas man. I had blue eagle ls, trx-1, srt, and their trx3 buggy. Some of the smoothest shocks in the business, and I think ALL their bearings were the same size. Only draw back was the pegs in the slipper. It never failed, anytime I was changing spurs, or going in the gear box, I'd lose some. Lol. Slipper worked good though, and easy to adj ball diffs. Wish I still had them. Come back to the racing scene Traxxas and I'll start racing again.

    Interestingly, the wheels on the SRT, was taken straight from the Blue Eagle LS, I had both and they were identical.
    The major updates on the SRT over the Blue Eagle LS, was the sandwiched chassis, the all steel top gear, and the fancy new shock-absorbers.
    Those were some of the finest shock-absorbers I have ever seen, high volume, high grade aluminum with a teflon coating, for smoother operation.

    Here's a little tip. want a modern SRT? Swap out the front bulk with a nitro rustler, swap in NR arms, links (F&R) and shafts (R) use the dish wheels, Modern SRT. The cool part, is the nitro stuff can be found on Ebay, for really cheap You can even swap the Proline transmission to take advantage of a metal motor plate and a more modern transmission design. Not sure what is available, other then Intrgy, on rear shock mounts for options, but the SRT front shock tower will fit the stock or NR bulkhead. I wish Traxxas would re-release the SRT, Finding one on Ebay is just heartbreaking (Arm, leg and left cahones). Heck, JConcepts could market high performance replacement chassis parts and maybe a tranny case(?), i would think. I know i'd build one, if i could

      @@kingchakazulu7762 while I agree, that rulon peg slipper can't handle brushless power. If you want to keep it vintage, Get the Rustler top shaft without the top gear and put the old (Traxxas or Thorp) nylon/Delrin top gear with the alumnium mid gear. this will allow you to run the modern traxxas 3 pad slipper from the 2wd 1/10 line and spur gears, keep the cover on it you got your vintage look with modern performance. BTW i tested an SRT tranny with the nylon top and alumnium mid setup on a VXL 3s system using a modern traxxas slipper, I recorded 1200watts on 3s with an Eagletree data logger and it never broke. These tests were on blacktop and just enough slipper set to proper (rear wheels held and nail throttle and front wheels just popped up, then set back down). I really do wish they'd re releases it

    I loved my Blue Eagle LS (still do) but the transmissions were not the best even though by that time they were essentially copying the Stealth. It was hard to keep them running really smoothly. The plastic they were made of was too soft. OK for suspension parts but not great for precise gear meshing. I had to replace them regularly when I was racing a lot.

    • @Grumpy_old_Boot
      @Grumpy_old_Boot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were some trick that could make them more robust ... such as replacing the bushings with ball bearings, in the differential and the slipper. And replacing the top gear in the gearbox with a steel one _(there was another way to continue on the plastic top gear, but it was complicated)._ After that the only problem was if the motor was strong enough to simply strip the counter gear of it's teeth, but there were aftermarket counter-gears made of harder Teflon to combat that as well. After that, the next "weak point" would be when the middle gear in the gearbox would explode, or the axle in the motor would bend, but you had to *really **_SERIOUSLY_** try hard* to do either of those things. 😄

    I always hear about srt vs lxt vs rt10t but never a tamiya stadium blitzer or thunder. Why is that?

      This was way before the RS4, back then, there were no 4WD Stadium Trucks. Cool truck btw.

      What’s also interesting, the Nitro Rustler shares more components with the SRT compared to the electric. The Nitro Rustler is basically a basher version of a prototype nitro SRT called the GRT.

    The Stadium Trucks always disappointed me, because they didnt look like a Stadium Truck!! They look like a buggy with big tires.

      @@kingchakazulu7762 Er, I wasn't meaning to emphasize the time frame. Why do they give others crap for running stock class?
      I've never raced stock class, which I don't see many clubs racing anymore, and I've never seen a stock class for 1/8 scale buggy which is all I run anyway, so I'm not familiar with it. Seems like a fair idea to make it more focused on driver skill than budget, though nowadays I feel like even less races are won due to who had the fancier equipment vs. who had the better driving skill.

    Seeing the chassis I don’t understand how the rustler is still made today over this truck, this truck looks far superior to a rustler
