THE LOSI STORY - CH1 OF 4 - HOW IT STARTED

  • For 40 years it’s pushed the boundaries of scale, technology, and innovation. When you think of Losi, you think racing, quality, and adrenaline. Founded on a racing pedigree to be better than the rest. It's not just an RC car, it’s a feeling of getting behind the wheel and hitting the throttle. Our DNA is built from the past, but our DRIVE is to the future. Race. Inspired. Losi is RC.
In chapter 1, Gil Losi and Gary Kyes walk through the early days of Team Losi and it's evolution into a RC race car manufacturer

Late 80s and early 90s... Left the Hobby around 2012... Started JR SE Pro days... The hobby changed big time around 2000 and today is just a nasty place to spend your time.

I raced in late 80’s early 90’s. Was thinking about getting back into it. What about the hobby today is “nasty”? This gives me pause and I’d really like to understand a bit more. Thanks

@@cpg8000 Nothing " nasty " about it. He's being a drama queen. Racing wise, its better than its ever been. And growing every day. Racing is competitive, lots of personalities, but that doesn't make it any different than any other form of racing.
Sure the 80's were great, Golden age for a lot of things, bmx, skateboarding....And RC. But those days are over and not coming back.....
Those who cant adapt quit, those with a true love for the hobby embrace it!

Who would have guessed that Team Associated would renege on a deal? Good on you Pops and Gil Jr that it took 40 years for that truth to come out.
In retrospect thanks Associated, without them backing out of a deal Team Losi may never have existed........

I recently purchased Gil Sr.'s Dodge Magnum SRT8 shown in the first few moments of this video in the garage shot. Shocked me. I wasn't ready to hold back tears for a man I never knew personally. Going through this series now and will add the series to my watch list so that I can go back to it. Such an icon to the sport. Rest easy Gil.

Wish I would have kept my JRX2. Won alot of races with it. Made up for it by purchasing the GTX first run? in 96, and the last run in 2006. I still have my instructional VHS that came with the GTX, and recently restored my GTX back to NIB condition. Raced off-road for 25+ years, never had as much fun as with my Losi stuff. The golden era that will never come back. RIP Gil.

I went to many and spent too much money but it was so much fun I wish I would have stayed with it but it was getting expensive for a teenager I still have most of my race stuff and my truck that won so many local races along with NORCCA/ROAR races I miss my old race days all the tracks are gone that I raced I might restore my truck and go for a race who knows?

Hi. I compete at a low level racing today with a Schumacher L1 4wd buggy in the winter cup series. I started racing again in 2017. When I first start compete in 1991 in the winter cup series, I first drove a RC10 with a carbon chassi then switch to the RC10 Worlds car around 1994. I struggled with that car and often was at best in C - B main. When we bought a used Losi Double X around 1996, things started to change. I was able to drive faster thanks to the Losi car because it really was more easier to drive. I started to make it to the A main finals at the end of 1996 I think and continue racing to the end of 1997. I truly has Losi to thank for my short success in those days in 2WD.

Love this! I was a rc freak in the 90’s. One of my life’s ambitions was to race at the Ranch Pit Stop. In 97 my mom and I made a trip across the country and somewhere in the Midwest I bought a new motor for my RC10T but being young and dumb it was more motor than the esc could take. I cooked my esc at lake meade. We made it to the pit stop but instead of running there I just got a tour. I wish I knew then what I know now.

The youtube algorithm really shined. just found this video and wow. I was in 7th grade running the JRxPro, and the the RC10L. I also Had an RC12i, but never raced it. I was Just a young kid being dropped off at the local hobby shop by my parents on Sunday mornings for the on road races and also to the evening races that took place once a week at a dirt track hobby shop across town.
At the time I was running the "Peakin Teekin" as we used to call it. Their ESC's and chargers. Some guys were running Novak. I Then upgraded to a Victor Sr. charger. Think I was running Reedy motors. Im 45 now and would still have all of those cars including the Burns DX. but I lost all of my RC gear to a break in around 1997/8. The only thing i have left now is an original Frog purchased in the mid 80's. Good times. Kept me out of trouble.

These men are in their 60s today. They were in their 20s opening a leading corporation. Complaining that drivers marketing their products want to be paid and not just do it for fun. Keeping in mind that these kids all were from well off families in order to have become so skilled at racing. I can't imagine these kids families being ok with their sons marketing the Losi product for fun. .... To be fair.

I never go a Jrx2, but I eventually convinced my mom to get me a XXT when it came out. I was a big Losi loyalist lol and was sad to hear when they sold the company.

I did hear something awhile back that Losi had their hand in the design of the RC-10. I didn't know all these specifics. I remember when I was young, I just couldn't be a band wagon kid buying the same car (RC-10) everyone had. I always had to be the kid who went in his own direction. And I remember when I first saw Ken Keys JRx2 in the magazine ad, I was sold immediately. I liked the rounded nose of the body. I liked the way the body went over the rear shocks. I liked the 5 link. I liked the orange 5 star wheels. I never owned an Associated until I acquired a large lot of gold pans a couple years ago. I'm still not thrilled about them. But it's stories like yours that will never allow me to support companies like Associated and Traxxas directly. I may acquire a nostalgic vehicle of theirs. But I just can't bring myself to buy brand new from dishonest companies. Was wondering if Losi owned or had the skatepark built ? Or if the state built the skatepark and then they just opened the skate shop ? I too rode skateboards in the mid - 80's. I was in Irvine then. Team Vision (Vision Street Wear) was in my area. I only lived in Irvine a few months. Mom couldn't find stable income, so we had to return to CT. lol .... Still have my original JRx2 from 1988. I'm doing the xx tranny swap on it. I'm forever doing my best to collect nostalgic Losi bits.

I remember seeing Jack Johnson here in Vegas at Circus Hobbies way back when with the prototype JRX-2. Gil Jr, and Ron Rossetti would come and race occasionally there as well. Sr. is right, I had a decked out RC10, MIP trans, A&L trailing arms, graphite chassis, etc and when the JRX-2 came out my RC10 was put on a shelf. Out of the box the JRX-2 it was incredible, though those original rear stub axles did bend pretty easily lol Good times!

Used to race in the 80's at Ranch Pit Shop, Wednesday night 1/10 off road races. It's sad to see all the hobby companies bought up by Horizon. Seems like all the hobbyness went away and it just never felt the same after all that consolidation under Horizon. Lost the feeling of garage made fun and now is just cookiecutter feeling.
