@knoxwood85 I had a magnaflow put on my v6 98 Firebird and it doesn't sound like this. The companies have two different tones. The Magnaflows have a good lower tone and I did notice a power increase. However, it's not the sound that I want. Right now I'm looking at getting a flowmaster even though it's not stainless steel. I think Magnaflow is a better option for the WS6's, cars with real power. If you're running a 6 like me flowmaster MIGHT be better. I dont know much about this yet.
I see you haven't experienced the pure badass that is known as the LS1. It DOES get better gas mileage than the 3.8 and it does have a lot more power. Yes the engine is bigger, 346 ci, compared to the 3.8's 231 or 232 if I remember right. Even though the engine is a lot bigger it is also much more efficient. If you still don't believe me, check out the sites firebirdv6 and LS1tech Both of them will tell you the same thing.
@EriksTube22 Couple years late, but the (newer) V8's DO get better gas mileage, and it has nothing to do with anything you listed. First the LS1 is just much more efficient than its older equivalent (the LT1). Second, the 6th gear on the manual transmission for an LS1 equipped car is 0.50:1 so it keeps the rpms really low on the highway which allows for less gas consumption.
Yeah its an 80 series, and getting bigger pipes back to the cat will make very very little difference in sound. The muffler is what makes the difference by far. Obviously its still a v6 in the end, but for a v6 it sounds pretty damn good. And its not too loud that it gets annoying talking to people in the car.
With the same parts as the V8, the V6 can be more efficient - I'm getting a helluva lot better gas mileage with my 3.1 now that I put a ram air intake on it like the V8s had. No, I'm not trying to race, trying to get better gas mileage. And without balanced or aligned wheels, I got somewhere in the upper 20's in terms of mpgs.
@donnienordan That's a ridiculously dumb comparison. For one 3.7 liters vs 7.0. Second, whats a ls7 crate motor cost again? Oh yeah, $10,000. That would be a 3rd of a whole cost of a 370z. I'm sorry but comparing a car with a $70,000 MSRP vs a car with a $30,000 MSRP is just stupid.
Yeah, in this video the only mod is the flowmaster 80 series muffler. If you are going for sound and don't care much about performance, just get a muffler. When I added the rest of the pipes back to the cat it made NO difference in the sound over the factory pipes.
3.8L are quick but for a Firebird theyre gay. I like the Grand Prix 3.8s cause their a sedan but quick and theyre just as quick as a Firebird which was a muscle car. Its sad they made V6 Firebirds, but they had to sell them and not everyone wanted performance or could afford it.
@harleyirvin exhaust system upgrades reduce back pressure and increases horepower....it's not just about the sound. And fyi making a 6cyl faster takes more finesse and skill than just bumping up the cubic inches...some of us like that.
@harleyirvin Im not saying fbody v6's are faster. I've got a v6 and a v8 for the record. I'm saying overall, there are plenty of other cars with v6's faster than v8s. For instance, a stock 370z is faster than a stock ls1 firebird/camaro.
@stephentard So your saying that i'm dumb for saying that a V-6 Firebird is slower than a V-8? I'm sorry but they are. you have to put a ton of money in a 6 to make it compete. It would be cheeper and a nicer car just to buy the real engine.
@211junky Borla is the best of those and by far the most expensive. Magnaflows probably better than flowmaster since magnaflow is stainless steel if I remember right. Flowmaster definitely isn't stainless and honestly it doesn't really sound that great.
think about it for a minute. the v6 and v8 firebirds weigh almost the same amount. the v8 has more power and it's a lot easier for the 8 to move that weight than the 6. the 8 wouldn't be working as hard as the 6, thus better gas mileage.
What's even sadder, according to the government fuel economy website, my car (92 S-10 blazer) gets 14mpg city, 20 highway. The 3.4L engine gets 17 city, 26 highway. So next time you think you have crappy gas mileage, have pity on me.
You say that as if a v6 firebird is a good looking car. The ls1 ws6's were, but the 93-97 firebirds were on the ugly side. That and I get compliments on how my evo looks 10 times more than I ever did in the firebird.
An Evo IX is a significant upgrade from even a LS1 firebird. And a v6 isn't even comparable to an LS1. An Evo IX runs about the same time as an ls1 fbody when both cars are stock and mine has about 100 hp over stock.
maybe the 3.00 inch in 2 1/2 out would sound better,be deeper, the bigger pipes are what really tunes the sound.and i saw another v6 firebird flowmaster vid that sounded like the split tips messed up the sound.
No, we just had to buy our own cars. And those happen to be non-LS1 powered vehicles. If you actually saved up for a V8, then I can just make fun of you in about 10 years for being a V8 owner, and tell you how superb my V16 is.
first off, the muffler sounds great, i have a 3.8 in my firebird and i'm considering that muffler now. second- a v8 gets better gas mileage because of the better weight-torque ratio, it's so easily over looked.
I own an 87 Camaro with the a 6 in it and i have dual exhaust and its not to shabby. good on gas and it runs with my buddies 99 V6 mustang. the funny thing is My 19 year old camaro looks better than his 99 stang!
Yea i heard some GM crate engines (V-8s) use about 29mpg thats the same as my 97 3800 series 2 V-6, and question to the owner of the firebird are you running the flowmaster in a 3.4 or the 3.8?
i got a 98 firebird that im thinking on putting these on..is a v6..i like the sound it has now..its a whole custom exhaust system..true duals..anyone have opinions on if i should get these or not?
Look up john shepherd's dsm before you say 4 cylinders are crap. That car runs 7.7ish in the quarter mile with no nitrous and on a 2.0 liter motor. I would say thats pretty damn impressive.
Some inline 6's such as the RB25DET sound just as good as a v8. And I love the way v8's sound. Its a different sound but its equally as amazing. I will agree however the GM 3800's all sound like shit.
@knoxwood85 magnaflow, has a better rumble and less rasp, get the magna highflow cat. i had flowmaster on mine and it was 40 series swap it out for magna and dnt regret it.
I have a 1994 v6 3.4 firebird. what type of exhaust should I get for it?? Flowmaster 40 series? Or a magnaflow catback exhaust? Need I remind you i want a very loud exhaust... Thanx:)
@harleyirvin Some people enjoy hearing their cars and don't particularly care what other people think. Also, a blanket statement saying all V6's are slow is somewhat dumb.
Magnaflow is better. Greater power gains, no drone and it just sounds better. That's why we ONLY use Magnaflow on our vehicles here. But sounds okay, just no power gains.
In this video its the muffler only with factory pipes from it to the cat. And I'm sure the seals are welded my neighbor owns a exhaust shop so I just had him do it.
This is like my fav. video now. Mainly because I'm gettin a firebird in March and I dunno whether Im gettin a V6 or the Gas Guzzling Trans Am.... which do you think?
What year Firebird is this? I'm thinking of installing flowmaster on my '97 V6 Firebird, but I dont really know anything about modding cars, I just to race them xD.
Agreed, but that guy must have been very dumb or he was just joking as the LS1 gets the same or better gas mileage as the 3.8(which gets better gas mileage than the 3.4).
nice car. And all you guys, just stop please. I have an L36 w/3.42 rear, my girl has an LS1 w/3.23 rear. LS1s do NOT get better mileage, it is impressive though.
I have the flowmaster 80 series on my 3.1L firebird sounds just about the same love it has a nice rumble but its also hooked up to headers and a high flow cat
Trans am isn't horrible on gas. It gets something like 24 highway 16 city. In 6th gear on the manual at 80 MPG your at just over 2000 RPMs, its amazing
Aint nothing wrong with a V6 Firebird (um, 4th gen i mean). For those of us that also owned 5 liter 3rd generation camaros and Fbirds, those put out @ 160-215 HP, and we all thought they were soo fast... and they were! The 3.8 and even the 3.4L from the early 4th gen can put out about the same HP, so there's absolutely no shame in a V6 maro or bird. Heck some guy tried to swap me his 98 Trans Am for my 94 Bird - cuz he couldnt afford the GAS [snickers]!
well thats the whole thing, wamp42, some people just wanted to have the Firebird or Camaro, and if speed wasnt so important to them, the appearances were. Besides, the 3.4 and 3.8 are reasonably fast and gas consumption won't murder your pockets! Especially for younger drivers (early and mid 20s).
@knoxwood85 I had a magnaflow put on my v6 98 Firebird and it doesn't sound like this. The companies have two different tones. The Magnaflows have a good lower tone and I did notice a power increase. lol no, its not even stainless steel, in fact it even sounds like something is already starting to come loose inside the muffler
@AcceptableGamer I now have the experience to say Flowmaster sucks. I didn't when I bought this muffler 5 years ago.
Putting loud exhaust on a V6 is just letting everybody know just how slow your car really is. I just don't understand.
I looked on the flowmaster website and didn't see it as an option for my car. how did you make it dual?
buddy thats as good as its gonna get....i got a 95 firebird....and to me it sounds decent for a v6.....
t56 = low ROMs in 6th gear = giid gas mileage. and gm would make a v6 to sell more firebirds. duh duh...
AYOO I GOT THE MAGNAFLOW EXHAUST ON MY CAMERO WITCH IS BETTER FLOWMASTER BROLA OR THE MAGNAFLOW
those flowmasters sound pretty kick ass tryin to decide for those or magnaflow any suggestions
@josh666675 They are just normal exhaust piping that was cut at an angle and then polished.
i say that v6 doesnt sound good. im sorry but ive heard inline sixes with a better sound
@ElegyXD I finally sold mine after owning it for about 7 years. Upgraded to an Evo IX.
@stephentard I like how you say go with magnaflow, but yet your using flowmaster lol
is everything else on the car stock? all you did was put on an 80 series flowmaster?
can i do this on my 97 bird v6 but it only has one exhaust tip
@monotonelifestyle All stock except the 80 series muffler.
Yeah, when you put the muffler on it will have two outlets
Uh, yeah... inline sixes typically sound better than v6's
2 1/4 if I remember right. Its been a few years though.
ps..should I get an 80 series instead for the 3.4 v6?
@knoxwood85 Go with magnaflow, its stainless steel.
Aint nothing wrong with a V6 Firebird (um, 4th gen i mean). Hi,
is this a 3,4L or a 3,8L engine? Thanks
thats right v6 power right there, i have a 96 camaro rs and my bro has a Z28...i'd take mine over his anyday...looks nicer and saves me gas!
Sounds like a moaning cow.. MOOOOOOOOOOO
stephen - 1) the V8 is a bigger engine b) with more fuel flow and hp and 4) no way it gets better mileage than the V6!!
my ls1 got 27.5 mpgs. no mods... auto.
hey bro how much do thoughs go for??
@knoxwood85 go with a TSP rumbler .
93-97 firebirds were ugly. No offense to anyone who owns ones.
I think it sounds pretty decent for a six cylinder.
The fastest 3800 in the world runs a 1/4 mile in about 6.8 seconds at 215 Mph.
I had a 80 series on my olds but sounded much better with out the cat.
evo ix is not a upgrade
@CHEVYCAMARO4GEN The 3.8
wher did you get the straight tips that go into the inlets
@stephentard Nice
what year was your Firebird
sounds pretty good for a v6
@baureihe151 3.8
I got the same system on my Camaro less than a month ago, and it sounds great! It sounds very good on yours, too. Nice Firebird!
Sounds just like my first Camaro when I was 18... I'm all nostalgic lol
Sounds good man, nice Bird
Loved that, awesome sound from the 3.8!!!
@stephentard ive had mine for about 5 years and just cant let it go. Ill atleast swap out the v6 for an LS6 sometime next year.
i love my firebird
