The title “cowboy” is for actual working cowboys, everyone else is just regular folk wearing western clothes. Including the western hat. So wear the boots, the hat, the buckle. I would keep the chaps and spurs at home though lol.

Let's get it right Guys. U have to learn the history. Boy was a derogatory term used by whites against u know who the blacks. The white men were not called cowboys they were ranchers, ranchmen, ranch hands etc.. But when John ware and bill Pickens made the name that was meant to be derogatory famous (cowboy). Now every feel that it's ok to Steal the name. 😂😂😂😂😂. Theres nothing wrong with being called a Rancher. Plenty of words that used the word “boy” were not and boy was still often used to refer to YOUNG men including white men. Most cowboys started in adolescence as young as 12 or 13 years old. Cowboys were often young men due to the physical nature of their work and the need to be away from their families. Your history doesn’t add up either. John ware was born in 1845. Cowboy was used in England in the early 1800s to refer to men that tended to the family or community cows. Note how most Englishmen were also white.. by 1849, the word cowboy was already popularized and famous. John ware would’ve been 4 years old and bill Pickens wasn’t even born yet. Not to take away from either of those great men who’s accomplishments speak for themselves, but the history you are stating is just a misconception. Nobody worth a damn is gonna “fuck with you” for wearing western attire because most people know the contribution that blacks people made to cowboys culture too and that there were many famous black cowboys.

You're right on. I've got a few hats because I rotate every day. A couple are $200-300 hats, but the ones I wear the most tend to be my $40-50 hats because I just don't worry about if they get dirty or messed up or blow away or something.

@@noviddaily780 I’m the same age as you and I’ve grew up in a scary horrible place messing around with bad bad people that I’ve separated myself from you just need to get out there to experience real danger and life and your confidence will come very very fast. I wear a tucked in white dress shirt in a vest with Stetson boots I got used for $40 and a 70 year old boater hat. Basically dress like 1930s person would in Southern Ontario apart from the boots which are also historically accurate just would be weird to see around here back then but the people that crap on what you wear are 9/10 wearing baggy sweatpants while they do it just remember to keep your posture good and everyone that sees you won’t be able to deny that you are confident since you are willing to dress unlike most and it draws people in, you’ll make friends and even get discounts at the market. I own a Bailey fur felt hat and love it I've owned it for just shy of 3 years and paid $120 on sale. I live up in Canada in the prairies so it's literally just farming and livestock. I'm originally from the city life but was basically raised in the country life and I love it. If you like the look of it then stay with it it's that simple. The clothes doesn't make you who you are, you are what makes you who you are.
Good video, I had the dilemma of wanting to wear a cowboy hat but Im in the northeast. Its just not the norm here. I always had some kind of cowboy boots of the sort over the years. I finally said " screw it" and I bought a nice pair of boots and then a nice cowboy hat. I did some research on etiquette and proper fit. I took some fashion ideas from George strait, as I always thought he had a perfect western, gentleman look. I then graduated to western shirts and belts. The process was a bit slow so I didn't shock people around me and I didn want to appear that all of a sudden I was a wearing a cowboy costume. I must say that I wish I wore the western apparel years ago as I get compliments all the time on my hat and boots. People say hello, hold the door for me and give me a little more respect than the average joe. I'm in NH and it probably works a lot better than in Boston. Your right though, you have make the hat work with what your wearing. NO sneakers or hiking boots. Work boots with a heal or cowboy boots are a must. You have to wear the hat level on your head not slanted back above your hair line. Purchase something of decent quality and forgo the novelty, bent up rocker, local carnival fair hats. Ounce you wear the hat a dozen times or so, youll the confidence to pull it off like you've been wearing one forever. Actually living here in the North east where the cowboy hat isn't the norm, it comes off as a bit unique. I cant believe the number of people who tell me " hey, nice hat". I often get asked where I'm from when I'm out to eat with my wife.

I'm from the North East ( New Jersey). I love cowboy hats.... most people will look and laugh if you wear a cowboy hat . I don't care because I am country in my heart. I'm half and half actually... I've always loved country clothes and music. Cowboy hats and boots are my thing. I've never owned a real cowboy hat but I've had straw ones and a few fake ones. I want a felt one though in black. I no longer live in New Jersey but where I live now ( Turkey) I don't think they wear cowboy hats either. I really don't mind who likes it or who doesn't, it's who I am. One day I will get a felt black cowboy hat.
I wear whatever I want with a cowboy hat... I pretty much wear cutoff black tee shirts or short sleeve black tee shirts so I'd wear one of those with either blue jeans or black jeans or cutoff jean shorts ( to the knee) and for shoes boots ( work boots or desert boots - I don't own cowboy boots YET) or high tops or flip flops or sandals. At home, barefoot or socks, even a guinea shirt ( wife beater, whatever you wanna call it) and shorts. Whatever you feel comfy in and is your style I'd say you can wear with a cowboy hat. Be yourself. You don't need to wear boots and a snap up plaid shirt and stiff jeans and all that and look like a country singer... just wear what's comfy and enjoy the hat.

I really enjoy dressing and looking like a cowboy and while I own cowboy boots (which were given to me by a friend) I don't own a Stetson but I would like one. I'm 15 and obviously don't have a steady enough income in order to blow 100-200$ on a hat (yet). What I DO own is a wool felt hat made by Twister that cost about 50$ and I enjoy wearing around and since it's getting about winter time around here in Alabama it will serve a practical service as well.
the rule of the cowboys is Memorial Day to Labor Day is Straw Hats and Labor Day to Memorial Day is felt hats. Ive been rodeoing my whole life and btw this video isn't the best advice, wear whatever you want whenever you want. Being a cowboy isn't a look, its an attitude.

One tip for a new hat wearer....when you buy, of course you pick the one that looks best on you. But next step, at least for me, is to fine-tune it. Either go to a western wear store and they can steam & shape it for you, or if you're daring you can use the steam from a tea kettle and do it yourself. To learn how, I used an old hat that I didn't care if I destroyed it, to work on my skills. Now I just do all my hat shaping myself.

You definitely don't need cowboy (western) boots. Leather shoes definitely not ever sneakers. Boots are best for sure in my opinion. A straw cowboy hat is ok with sandles if it's the beach.
Jeans are a good pants to wear but not necessarily so, cotton work pants and carpenter pants work too. Any flannel or plaid shirt is good, even a short sleeve button or snap western style shirt works. Tshirts are cool too but I prefer that look in summer with a straw over a felt hat.
Also wear the right hat for the right season. It loosely goes by the no white after labor day rule but people are not as strict, if it's warm weather or a warm season wear straw if it's colder weather like late fall to early spring wear a felt hat.

I live in S/E Wisconsin very few people wear a cowboy hat on a daily base as I do when ever I leave the house. I am a biker I have an old $20.00 straw hat I wear in the summer and a nice $70.00 leather one for the cold months. But I always wear a dew rag under my cowboy hats it's the biker in me what can I say... LOL..
I've got a very pretty totally bald head and if I don't wear my hat in the summer my pretty head gets sunburned and in the winter it freezes...

I was wearing Tony Lamas in Florida a while back and even though it was winter those folks were still wearing flip flops. I'm from Texas and got my jeans creased with boots and there they are in basically pajamas and flip flops haha. Florida is the casual dressed state for sure. Yeah a bandana or dew rag is good under a hat, or that sweat will roll down to your eyes. It all comes down to are you wearing the hat or is the hat wearing you. This is exactly the kind of straw hat Id wear to do yard work. Not what I’d call a cowboy hat at all. That’s a functional hat, and has its place. Better to do a video on wearing a cowboy hat if you’re actually wearing a cowboy hat. A hat with a curled sides brim does not mean it’s a cowboy hat.

I was actually looking for some tips on shaping the new straw hat I just bought at Boot Barn. Their steam machine was down so I couldn't get it shaped. This video came up in my search for hat shaping tips and I thought it might be interesting or funny to see what people think makes a legit cowboy look. To me the easiest giveaway to a fake cowboy is new clean outfit. People that wear cowboy hats regularly will be wearing a well worn looking hat with well worn looking boots. And really the boots are optional. I've worn a hat with everything from lace ups, ropers, steel tow work shoes, Nike sneakers, and my most favorite outfit, white wife beater tank top, colorful long swim shorts, and my favorite pair of Crocs. In my mind I look bad ass when I'm cleaning my pool in that outfit but ALSO in my mind - I don't give a crap what anyone thinks about my outfit. You don't like my outfit- come at me bro.

You don't have to be a cowboy to wear a cowboy hat with cowboy boots just like you don't have to play baseball to wear a baseball cap and sports shoes. It's that simple. Stop calling people who pair cowboy hats with cowboy boots "posers", "wannabes" or "losers". They are not. I would recommend wearing a typical, classic cowboy hat made of felt or straw (only for working during hot weather). You can go with black or brown or white - classic basic colors. Choose a Stetson hat. Wear a good cowboy hat or do not wear it at all. What you are wearing on this video doesn't look good.

95% of people wearing cowboy hats and boots have nothing to do with cows and being a real-working cowboy. So it's 100 proc. cool and OK to wear a cowboy hat and boots even if you live in a city as I do. Be yourself and be proud of it.

I'm not really sure that there are clothes that don't go with a cowboy hat. I have seen guys wear a three piece suit with a matching cowboy hat. Just put the darn thing on.

Getting triggered is definitely not a hallmark of a cowboy by the way 😂 Anyway, the dress shoes you exemplified, *do* work. Wearing jeans, covering your ankles nobody can tell if they’re actually “real” boots or not. And the hat you wear *does* work, a hat is a hat!! It looks cool and relaxed.
