I’ve had my Stetson rancher almost 50 years! I’m 63. I get compliments every time I wear it… little kids stare and wave. I like it better than any of my fedoras. Wear one!
Grew up wanting to be a cowboy. My dad wore cowboy hats. I did a little as a kid. Where I lived. If you wore a c hat, it would draw attention and teasing. So the culture I lived in. It wasn't that accepted. At 40 I moved to Washington. East Washington. Cowboy culture is alive and well out here. Not predominantly, but it's here. I started buying hats once I got a place where I could get horses. Now I own 5 acres and have 2 horses. I have probably 8 cowboy hats. I'm obsessed with them. Wear one everywhere I go. Except my job that doesn't go with my uniform. When I go home to Michigan. I still wear one. I get looks there or " howdy tex" comments. But idc. Cowboy hats are part of me now
I started watching the TV show "Yellowstone" and it started to get me into the cowboy culture. Long story short, I now own 5 cowboy hats and I do wear em in a small town in BC, Canada.Sometime people do stare but most of the time they ain't paying too much attention or at least they hide it very well. I told my boss about this, and he said "at least you ain't wearing a dress and insisting your pronones, who cares what they think?". Oh, and I am Asian btw.
Same here man. I always had a few nice hats and wore them periodically through the year. I’d wear my straw hat everytime I hunted and felt once in a while. After watching Yellowstone, it restored my love for hats and now I own 8 hats lol. I wear them all the time. I’m not a cowboy either I just have always love western wear since I was a kid
I wear a cowboy hat every day and when I started my wife told me I looked odd and I wasn’t a cowboy. I live in Montreal, so I told her I’ll take it off when she tells the next man dressed up as a woman the same thing. I still wear my Shasta beaver and straw Stetson to this day.
I am a cowboy hat wearing almost everyday here in the Netherlands. Dutch culture 'dictates' not to stand out to much, so sometimes people try to give me a hard time because i wear a cowboy hat and therefor stand out. I never cared and wear my hat whenever i want and feel like it 😊 As for the rules, i only care about the 'never put your hat down on the brim' rule and the 'don't wear a hat indoors' rule. Nice video 😊
Cowboy hats are PURE AMERICANA!!! If you go out wearing one and don’t even think twice about it one seems to exude natural confidence. You come off as a man who is strong willed and sticks to whatever he does and will finish a task no matter how hard. It’s American exceptionalism in the form of a hat. I get dudes ask me all the time don’t you feel weird like people are staring at you and I say no it’s quite the opposite it’s more like the pretty woman who are looking. Also it can’t hurt to walk with a little swagger a la Raylon Givens!
I’ve been riding horses in the classic western style since I was a kid, and started wearing cowboy hats when I first started to compete. I now wear them and other similar wide brim outdoor hats for practical usage while doing K9 Search and Rescue work. They are wonderfully practical when built out of the right material for the climate and work you are doing. Just acquired a Mexican Fan Palm hat which is waterproof to the point where it can be dunked in water to cool your head while working, which in the west where I live, where it is regularly over 100 to 110 and humid in tbe summers, this is incredibly valuable. I also need the hat to be durable enough to push through thorn briars and juniper brush and stop the ticks from raining down on my head. I wouldn’t be without a hat while working outside, it has saved me from burns, heatstroke, injury and tick bites many many times. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to protect from the elements, or for those who want to try a new style. If you can, find a hat shop and try on lots of different shapes. The different styles can really look different based on your face shape and each person has styles that express their personality and style better than others. You can also get a hat custom shaped to you, if you can find the traditional western hat shapers.
So hear me out, I am an Iranian fellow, who currently lives in Budapest, and studying here, no matter what happens I am always wearing my cowboy hat, yes I stand out, and yes maybe I am a city cowboy, but I always I respect the culture, the roots, and everything because I grow up with country music and west culture and it's grown me since I was kid, so now I cannot even leave outdoor without a cowboy hat, and It's what feels you like a "Man" and it comes with responsibility and some commitment as well. you don't wanna goofing around with cowboy or western attire!
@@Mazaco_The_Snake Right now I'm using felt, but sometimes especially during partying or having high activity, I will use Straw. In one more two months, a good quality straw hat is necessary.
I'm outdoors a lot, and as a coach, I switched from a cap into a Cowboy hat. Light weight, cool, and provides max shade on ears and neck. It's more like a tool now, part of my work attire.
Stetson and Resistol make great cowboy hats, but also try Akubra (Australian) hats! 100% rabbit fur, softer and very well made. I get many compliments! Love the down turned brim for good sun coverage of my Coober Pedy and Coolabah (with Croc hatband) models and they have the Kiandra and Snowy River models for a more 'western" look as well as many others such as their best selling "Cattleman". The Stetson Rawlings is also a favorite of my collection.
I started wearing cowboy hats in Illinois a year ago when I go to ballgames, the swimming pool, riding my lawn tractor, and such. Love them now. But, I’ll admit, they are crushable and can’t just be tossed or folded around like baseball caps or bucket hats. That’s a negative, but part of the respect for your hat that goes with wearing these bad boys.
I wear a cowboy hat every day, from work, the local pub, or dancing with the wife.. big twist I'm from England! I was raised at country shows by my grandfather since I was a toddler, I now make western style hats as a side business to homage him and my childhood
I am not a cowboy. Period. And I've become way too old to start being one. However, I love cowboy boots and cowboy hats. There's something about them that make me feel more myself, these days. So I wear them. A lot. I will never go full-blown cowboy with the full fashion sense, because I'm not a cowboy. I feel wearing the full-on fashion for something I'm not, disrespects the real cowboys. And, to be honest, I'm told by women that I look damn good in them boots and hats. Who am I to argue? 😊
I purchased my Stetson cowboy hat over a year ago and it's the best thing for the harsh Arizona sun. I have eczema from heat rash, so my Stetson is a must have and it's the best hat for sun coverage over my fedoras. Great investment
I own five and rotate through them all the time. A couple of thoughts to add to what you’ve discussed: 1) a cowboy hat is part of a western style - do you need to own a ranch and herd cattle just to prefer a western style - no….but some will think you should. If you like the style and you like cowboy hats…..wear what makes you happy. 2) buy quality - your points are valid…a cheap hat will collapse under use and weather conditions. Ranchers and rodeo folks wear high quality hats because they will survive the stress. One of mine is an 8x (mid quality) and it has survived for me for over 20 years, and it’s not even top of the line quality. Be willing to invest in a good hat and it will last forever (and can be reshaped and revamped when it’s necessary). Knowing how to actually care for your hat is critical in lengthening its life. 3) Think through and research what shape and style you like. Not every crown shape is good for every face. There are lots of shapes for crowns and brims….research, compare, and try different styles on until you find what you like. 4) A possible negative - a hat looks best when paired with proper boots, pants, belt and accessories. Not that you have to have all of that to wear one, but a solid, complete look makes a cowboy hat look good and not out of place. 5) In some places you WILL attract attention……I got tons of looks walking around in New York City……..SO WHAT. It’s your life, live it like you want to. No one bought you that hat and no one pays your bills. 6) Hat etiquette - you are right…..etiquette is extremely important to know and will often get you noticed more than the hat will itself. My father’s old school rule of thumb…”if I can wear my boots, I can wear my hat, with the exception of at church, at the dinner table, or when being introduced to someone”. 7) Hats provide an opportunity to further accessorize and refine your style. Hats can have pins, stickers, hat bands and lots of other stuff. Heck, the Richard Petty feathered hat band, circa 1970s and 80s, is even making a comeback down here in Texas now. Pick out what you like (some folks are minimalist - I tend to fall into this category) and customize your hat to your style.
Having spent a lot of time in NYC over the years, I'm betting at least half of the looks you got were people admiring you and your hat. After all, they're used to unique styles on the streets, and someone proudly wearing a cowboy hat stands out in a positive way to half the city's population. How do I know? I've worn cowboy boots in NYC several times over the years. Half the people were impressed. The others were a mix of "ho hum, cowboy boots" and giving me the side eye like some of those that saw you in your cowboy hat. Like you, my reaction to the side eyes was SO WHAT. Hm. Next time I visit NYC, I may just wear my cowboy hat...
I started out where an cowboy hat and boots 2023 And I never look back. People give a lot of good compliment That is true, people will look at you. But It will make you feel good and a sense of Pride . Thank you
I am like many here and have worn hats for years. I am bald and it is as functional as it is style. I love them and feel naked without it. There aren’t a ton of people wearing hats here in NC so It does stand out but I got past the caring a long time ago. I wish I had local friends that were into to hats too but none have embraced it yet. God bless!
I recently relocated to the eastern part of the Lower Mainland in British Columbia, and I've taken to wearing a cowboy hat and outfit almost every day. Initially, I felt a bit uneasy about changing my attire, worried about how people might perceive me. Surprisingly, though, it's been well-received, and I've even received compliments. Your explanation has been greatly appreciated and has served as an inspiration to me.
I have a few western hats, a twister straw cowboy hat, A Resistol the fort felt hat from the John Wayne collection, A Stetson silverbelly Open Road, a white gambler felt western hat, A Stetson Stratoliner fedora, and I bought two days ago a beige Stetson Florentine Milan straw hat. I loveeeeeeee hats!
I bought my first cowboy hat since i was a teenager. last Wednesday. Just a 3x Beaver felt silverbelly. Didn't want to spend the $500 until i was sure i liked how i felt / looked in it. Now i think i love it and may buy a couple more to keep on rotation. Recently started wearing boots again as well and found when I wear the look I act and feel a certain way, confident, cool, authoritative., put together.
Just got my first one. A 6x stetson black cowboy hat and want to wear it but afraid of the back lash but man I sure do love it. Takes guts to wear it all the time. Imma try and do it man great video
@DereksRoom if you like it and want to wear it just do it, its your hat its your life and if it makes you feel good do it! dont worry about what other people think or say... live your life for you not others
In Kentucky for me personally it depends on occasion. I wear a Silverbelly Stetson El Presidente to weddings and formal events, a Black El Presidente to formal events or funerals, a Stetson straw for everyday spring/summer wear and a Resistol black 10X in the fall/winter.
I'm wearing an Akubra Snowy River right now, an Australian western hat, great style and value. I plan to have a Rodeo king custom made for me with a telescoping crown and flat brim.
When people realize you wear it because you enjoy it and respect yourself and not just looking for attention people take you more seriously I can attest to this myself and I'm pretty sure you can too
Wear mine every day year round Dark brown wool Dec Jan Feb Palm spring and fall White straw mid May thru Sep About $200 for all 3 Still looking for my felt and willing to put $600 to $900 but it's gotta be perfect Been to five different western wear stores multiple times last 3 years and been close but haven't closed the deal Even good stores are struggling with supply

I live in Colorado and it is not as prevalent to wear a cowboy hat here. My grandfather was raised on a ranch but ended up starting a construction company and did not ranch later in life. He still wore cowboy hats all the time I was around him. I never really got into wearing them and honestly was not into cowboys or the old west much. However, within the last year I really started diving into western movies and I have blasted through a ton of them. It’s probably my favorite genre of movie these days. Westerns, even some of the ones made in the 30s and 40s are better entertainment then most the stuff being made today imo. I have not watched Yellowstone so can’t comment on that but it seems to have driven a lot of people toward owning a cowboy hat as well so bravo. I have always had great respect for ranchers, cowboys, etc. (alot of my extended family are still ranchers) but I recently decided to get a cowboy hat and am searching for one now. Hoping actual cowboys don’t hate me too much for wearing a cowboy hat since I have never even been on a horse tbh. I’m not exactly a city slicker either considering my hobbies (hunting, fishing, shooting sports) and background in excavation. I really just have great respect for cowboys and people who carry on their traditions and I hope not to besmirch the tradition by wearing it but to be a reminder of the good people who have wore them so very long. There is a deep rich history in it that has been glossed over or outright ignored by the public schooling system and I hope to reclaim the tradition in my family that my grandfather had. As you said in this video, there may not be a whole lot of people who will continue to uphold the traditions of wearing a cowboy hat and I think it’s more than a fashion statement to me.
Thats awesome keep wearing it, just like you my grandfather got me into cowboys and cowboy culture. Just because you've never ridden a hoarse doesn't mean you can't wear a cowboy hat and continue the tradition.
Great informative in video my man. Like the jacket too looks sharp on ya. I was waiting the whole video though for u to whip out that nice brand new expensive hat though lol
I own horses and I ride them, I usually only wear my hat when I ride. Personally I view it more as a tool than a fashion accessory, however I do wear it to rodeos and horse events.
@@gearup9503 you're prob right. I'll start with a Justin from tractor supply or something. Eventually, if I like it, I'll get a nice one. Thanks for the advice!
I wear one to work everyday - at work in a major retail store.. Why, it is effective for keeping the sun off me, second my roots, I grew up spending summers with my fam in the delta farming and working with mules and horses an cattle, and learning AG life. O And I wear one when I am storm chasing and taking pictures at cricket games.. Besides the iconic look. its the rules!
The unspoken truth, if you wear it, you held to a standard of integrity, and folks know when they see that hat, your going to tell it to them st8 and your going to hold the line.. I subscribed and liked.. O and Gen Xers like me, Don't over looks us.. But hat talk aside - good video..
I moved to lower Saskatchewan from Newfoundland, and I want to wear a cowboy hat everyday but I’m pretty sure I’ll get made fun of a lot lol I just need to get over that
I thought the same thing but other than one or two stupid comments from my friends most of them where respectful, and even inspired some to start warring cowboy hats themselves.
@@gearup9503so I picked up a Stetson premier 10X Shasta for around 700$ (shipping included) now Im starting to wonder if I should have saved for the 100x Stetson 🤔
I'm a hat collector but I have primary hats. My new Ariat 2x is definitely gonna be one of them. But I do fancy a nice wool flat cap . I have one imported from Ireland. My next hat will probably be a bowler although that will probably be an occasional hat to me. I'll definitely be getting more cowboy hats and see be switching between that and a flat cap depending on my mood or what I'm doing.
cowboy hats or sumbrerros they al serve a purpose to keep sun off you watch all the old black and white cowboy shows they all have hats to keep the sun out of their face and rain off them
Awesome! isn't that funny, the places you think you won't see cowboys are the places were there are lots of cowboys. It's the same here in Alberta Canada.
I mean bring a cowboy has always been about a lifestyle or work ethic. These hats have long roots that predate even cowboys. I say as long as you follow certain rules depending on general customs where you live, everyone should be allowed to wear a hat, cause not cowboys were from the US
One thing that BOTHERS ME!!!!!these men have cowboy hats right when i walk into church take it off they goes take it off put it back on during SERMON, MAN DO I WISH I STILL LIVED IN TEXAS,Teach these guys a thing or two
Only time I dnt have mine is on oilfield location, and sleepin. On hitch and fishing I have a cheap straw, rodeos and ranch work have a better straw in summer, and change to felt when weather permits. Also wear felt huntin bein a cooler month
Yeah there was no such thing as a cowboy hat when the settlers/colonizers first arrived in America... they wore the type of hats they came from Britain and France wearing, which wouldve been bowlers/derbys, homburg, top hats, bi/tricone hats etc etc The Stetson “Boss of the Plains” which is considered the OG cowboy hat didnt release until in 1865.
The hat don't make you a Cow Boy the word originated from white farm hands addressing people of to do things that don't want to do on a ranch or farm. I wear the hat for its use the history and culture of people who help build this country

In Kentucky for me personally it depends on occasion. I wear a Silverbelly Stetson El Presidente to weddings and formal events, a Black El Presidente to formal events or funerals, a Stetson straw for everyday spring/summer wear and a Resistol black 10X in the fall/winter.
Nice, got way more hats then I do lol.
As you can see in my profile picture, I wear a sheriff/police hat. I wear it everyday with pride.
I recommend to wear one!
NICE 🤙
@@gearup9503 hell yeah!
I'm wearing an Akubra Snowy River right now, an Australian western hat, great style and value. I plan to have a Rodeo king custom made for me with a telescoping crown and flat brim.
Not many cowboy hats in Michigan. Started wearing a cb hat here I got tired of baseball hats and men wearing them BACKWARDS, I am old school.
fully embraced the cowboy hat 2 years ago.... daily worn and don't plan on changing
Thats awesome, Same here I never leave without it.
When people realize you wear it because you enjoy it and respect yourself and not just looking for attention people take you more seriously I can attest to this myself and I'm pretty sure you can too
Same here!
I wear cowboy hats and boots all the time.
Wear mine every day year round
Dark brown wool Dec Jan Feb
Palm spring and fall
White straw mid May thru Sep
About $200 for all 3
Still looking for my felt and willing to put $600 to $900 but it's gotta be perfect
Been to five different western wear stores multiple times last 3 years and been close but haven't closed the deal
Even good stores are struggling with supply
Cool, if your looking for a great company I would recommend Sith Built Hats. I bought a 100x from them and I love it, here's a video I made of them th-cam.com/video/m1iQJQRLnDE/w-d-xo.html
Here's there website smithbilthats.com. Keep on Trucken Cowboy 🤙
I was waiting the whole video though for u to whip out that nice brand new expensive hat though lol
that funny, I'm planning on getting a new felt cowboy hat soon. Thats a good idea I will see if I can film them making it thanks.
I own horses and I ride them, I usually only wear my hat when I ride. Personally I view it more as a tool than a fashion accessory, however I do wear it to rodeos and horse events.
I want one that looks cool but also one that I can wear while I work.
Maybe look into straw they're cheaper but still strong.
@@gearup9503 you're prob right. I'll start with a Justin from tractor supply or something. Eventually, if I like it, I'll get a nice one. Thanks for the advice!
Thank you. All I can say is thank you for all you said. Cheers to you! Best from Canada :D
@@twrea Thank you for the sub and I agree, when you wear it you have to hold yourself to a standard.
Cool!, so if you don't mind me asking how many hats do you have?
There are no rules. It's your hat. Do what you want with it.
I live in the UK and wear mine nearly all the time.
That is awesome, always happy to hear people wearing cowboy hats in places where there aren't meany cowboys. keep on rockin!
cowboy hats or sumbrerros they al serve a purpose to keep sun off you watch all the old black and white cowboy shows they all have hats to keep the sun out of their face and rain off them
I wear a cowboy hat here in Ireland when I’m working outside on the farm more people over here wear them then you think
Awesome! isn't that funny, the places you think you won't see cowboys are the places were there are lots of cowboys. It's the same here in Alberta Canada.
I mean bring a cowboy has always been about a lifestyle or work ethic. These hats have long roots that predate even cowboys. I say as long as you follow certain rules depending on general customs where you live, everyone should be allowed to wear a hat, cause not cowboys were from the US
One thing that BOTHERS ME!!!!!these men have cowboy hats right when i walk into church take it off they goes take it off put it back on during SERMON, MAN DO I WISH I STILL LIVED IN TEXAS,Teach these guys a thing or two
It's sad how many people don't know proper hat etiquette, I make mistakes as well but at least I'm trying.
Got the same hat just want to get it steamed fit a little more snug
@@JoeNovak-qp8vs that awesome
the more people are seen wearing them in their day to day life it will then make the hat relevant.
You can wear felt hat all year and I have 9 hats. You paid big bucks for it wear when you want
True
Love it! I'm from Ohio and I have mine on regularly. Great video!
Nice, it always makes me so happy to hear of others doing the same. Sadly its becoming more rare to see.
Isn’t fishing and hiking when you would actually want to wear the hat to block sun?
I find it to be annoying when hiking, especially when back country camping.
Only time I dnt have mine is on oilfield location, and sleepin. On hitch and fishing I have a cheap straw, rodeos and ranch work have a better straw in summer, and change to felt when weather permits. Also wear felt huntin bein a cooler month
Nice, Same here wear my stay in the summer, but other then that its felt all the way.
I just bot a 100x cow boy hat back in October, did a vid on it as well. th-cam.com/video/m1iQJQRLnDE/w-d-xo.html
Just watched that video lol the smithbuilt very nice hat
@@chriscastillo6299 Thanks
I wear a straw hat year round here in Arizona
that makes seance do to the heat.
everyday
Cool video thanks homie
Apparently bowler hats were the original “cowboy hat”
Yeah there was no such thing as a cowboy hat when the settlers/colonizers first arrived in America... they wore the type of hats they came from Britain and France wearing, which wouldve been bowlers/derbys, homburg, top hats, bi/tricone hats etc etc
The Stetson “Boss of the Plains” which is considered the OG cowboy hat didnt release until in 1865.
My straw hat was $160
What about a leather cowboy hat?
I talk about it here th-cam.com/video/m1iQJQRLnDE/w-d-xo.html
I wear a cowboy hat I’m a sophomore in highschool I wanna bull ride, no schooling in my area.
I collect cowboy hats and fedoras. I love them all.
Nice 👍
My hat is a tool. Im never without it.
But if you're a drugstore cb. We'll know it.
?
I wear Justin hat
Nice, how long have you been wearing it?
@@gearup9503 month ago
@@gearup9503 I have wearing cowboy hats for years
The hat don't make you a Cow Boy the word originated from white farm hands addressing people of to do things that don't want to do on a ranch or farm. I wear the hat for its use the history and culture of people who help build this country
