You missed a couple of things, starting with the bandanna. While you mentioned dust, a big function was also to serve as a mask, especially when riding drag, to protect them from the dust the cattle kicked up. (Riding drag was when you were at the tail end of the herd). Also, while denim was around, it was not always popular with the drovers as miners tended to wear it. Western wear is a big piece of my style, but then while I haven’t worked with livestock for years, I am a Cowboy, with the scars to prove it.
I am a Texan living in Ohio. It is always overcast and drizzling. A few years, I finally bought a Mexican poncho on ebay. I have gotten more compliments on it the anything else.
@@matthewmorrisdon5491 I used to have an old hand-me-down overcoat that was great in rain. It greatly resembled an old west style duster except for the split in the back for riding a horse. and without the flaps over the shoulders you see on so many these days. It also had a detachable inner liner made with wool. I often think about getting another overcoat that is hopefully something like that one, but none of the stores around here have them and I only make it to the city about once a year.
As a motorcycle rider I fully understand the functional clothing. Every time I went for a ride something would hit me somewhere. Maybe a Stone, a Bee or even a bird. Each time I would add some piece of protection. It began with boots, then gloves, bandana... jeans and leather jackets and it's pretty much a cowboy attire.
Sucks that I see people of all ages get hurt on bikes and quads cause they refuse to wear ANYTHING. Just some shoes and street clothes. Some folks even ride with sandals and flip flops 🤮 I rode a bi cycle when I was little with flops once and ground my toenails off on one foot cause I hit a curb. Never again
@@pubcle In high school my sister actually cut her pinky toe off by riding a bicycle in flip flops. It was hanging on by a thread, but the nice folks at the ER stitched it back on. She still has no feeling in that toe ...
Honestly whenever I wear my cowboy hat I feel my social anxiety melt away since when you have one on you have to own it. Just walking around in my town or at a store and seeing others wearing them and just nodding approval at me makes me feel amazing and if anyone who reads this wants to wear one and has any reason to just do it, not just cowboys wore that type of hat. In the era Everyman wore one
@@devonogrady6403 dude Lee county here my man, I wear a Western hat just about every day and I do actually work cattle on the weekends, go for it man. Who cares about their disapproval. Just don't try to be someone you're not and you'll be fine. If they ask say, no I'm not a cowboy. But I like this hat and walk away.👍🏾👍🏾
@@devonogrady6403 Then DON'T rock a "cowboy hat". Go with some other Old West style. Plenty of hat types beyond those typical off-the-shelf cowboy hats. Go open crown or telescopic crown, flat brim or rolled brim, etc, or change out the hat band, and put some of your own uniqueness into it. Hell, it's Florida, so go with a wide brimmed, low curled, gambler crowned straw hat in white. Keep you cool, and looks cool too. Just make sure to pair it up with some boots, a nice shirt (dress or tee), and... well... like the video said, you can't beat a good vest.
One Halloween I decided to dress as a cowboy/outlaw. The outfit wasn't really planned, just piecing together what I had. A leather overcoat, a cheap leather hat, black ariat boots, black jeans, and a belt with fake bullets, and a day of the dead face mask. This one woman looked at me like she wanted to _do things_ to me. Outside of that, people loved the look.
Hawaii has a interesting history of the cowboys (Paniolo). Hawaii brought in vaqueros from Mexico, before California was a state. The King in Hawaii was gifted some cattle and a restriction was put on hunting them, they multiplied and got out of control. Hawaii also had at one time the biggest cattle ranch in the world, (Parker Ranch). In its heyday, Parker ranch was almost 500,000 acres. Today it’s only130,000 acre s.
Wow! For a Hawaiian ranch that was huge! I'm in TX and our biggest ranch is the King Ranch, at about 825,000 acres. It is a huge agribusiness occupying the largest amount of land of any ranch in Texas. It's spread out over four large, separate sections.
Awesome video! I'm a 55 year old black male from the city of Chicago. I grew up watching all of those western (Cowboy) boys movies shown in this video and as my grandmother would call them, "Shoot'em Ups". I've always loved the cowboy look and horse, but being from Chicago, it is very far from the norm. I now wear cowboys, a neckerchief (bandanna) and 1 of 5 cowboy hats everyday. You must have the self confidence to wear this attire if it is not the norm. However, I now live in Phoenix, AZ and own own a horse.
I did a few months in the county jail here in Oklahoma. I had been in a while when these two brothers were brought in the pod. They were very much into the thug culture and charged with some serious crimes. I got to know them and tried to influence their way of thinking. Told them about a trail ride friends and I used to take in the spring. The amazement on their face was priceless. Unprovoked both stated, when they got out they would try to be more county and explore the old ways. I hope they found their trail.
@@Mark-ct4iea dying breed for sure. Holding on to old traditions in this society keeps me sane, despite the funny looks it sometimes attracts. I’m just glad to have been born and raised in Oklahoma and to have had family that did so before me so I’m not having to figure it out on my own.
Great video, Antonio. Started wearing boots in high school, didn't wear them in college, but resumed afterwards. Boots are about the only footwear I now wear. Started wearing a cowboy hat several years ago, but not often because they're rarely worn in my area and still working on my "hat confidence". I believe those who make negative comments about boots have never worn them. IMO, you don't need to be an actual cowboy to pull off boots.
If you are wearing jeans, you have to wear boots. Start wearing a hat. I love them. Summer straw, cool shade producing. Winter felt hat for warmth, keeping your head dry.
@@markely7587 100% agree. Only footwear I wear when wearing jeans are boots, athletic shoes when working out, and flip flops with shorts. On occasion, I wear one of my straw or felts. Love the look and functionality of them, just not the comments and stares I usually receive when wearing them. I know I need to get past that. Usually wear one of my many ball caps instead.
@@kr115 you just have to wear your hats and ignore the haters. Of course it helps I am outdoors a lot. They do kinda stick out wearing in buildings and such.
@@markely7587 Wore one of my black felts to my wifes sisters funeral 2 weeks ago.. Lot's of looks like damn you don't stand out or anything. .just have to be confident in what you wear and nobody will think twice.. But your shit needs to be sharp, crisp and on point, all of it.. LOL
I was raised with horses, so I am very familiar with Western attire. Even today, I have a couple pairs of boots and a few hats that I wear from time to time. The secret is to just incorporate it into your regular wear. If you try to make everything western in your outfit, it just comes off as a costume.
@@parkerlevinthal152 No, it probably wouldn't work very well with those. However, if you normally wear jeans and running shoes, try a pair of boots instead. Instead of the baseball cap, throw on a cowboy hat. Even with the graphic hoodie, you could wear that with jeans and boots, or throw back the hood and put on a hat.
@@parkerlevinthal152 I wear my hat and boots with all of my hoodies. From skateboard brands to emo bands from my childhood. One of the most important points in wearing these things is being confident in what you’re wearing. I know plenty of friends that wore basketball shorts, hoodies and shit kickers as regular attire.
Same here. I think rdr 2 has inspired a lot of people to dress better. I'm seeing it everywhere. Vests, Henley's, collarless gpaw shirts, stovepipe boots, spenders, flat caps, the look of 1900 is timeless and just looks put together.
Great video! I’m a Brit and my kids say I should’ve been a cowboy. I’ve loved the western style since I was a teen in the 60s. I started wearing Wrangler denim shirts, before the 70s fashion for the western look. I’ve been wearing cowboy boots since that period, too, and now own about 13 pairs of varying styles. One problem is that, over here in England, there are a few people who like to dress like they’ve stepped off a stage coach in a John Wayne movie. Jeans tucked inside their boots; wide brimmed cowboy hat; suede jacket with flowing fringes, bandana, etc. Other people view them as a bit strange and they may be that! So I’ve spent 50 years perfecting my look, so I have a distinct western style, but without being so OTT that I stick out like a sore thumb. I think I’ve achieved the look I want and still get taken seriously by others. I also like to think that if I visited TX or other parts of today’s west, I’d blend in and not be recognised as a Brit!
I like how you don’t have to dress in gaudy western attire to enjoy the style. The items themselves separately are very practical. My straw hat I blew out after wearing it for several summers all the time doing yard work or just going to the store. My boots have helped with my posture a ton which others around me have noticed too. The boots themselves can take a beating and still look great in so many situations not to mention easy on and off.
South Texas “rednexican” here… nice video, love the history lesson. I’m surprised he didn’t go into more detail on the more modern looks. Like HEAVY starched jeans with a crease, crisp starched shirts (pearlsnap), soft shell weather proof jackets and vests for the colder days etc. Some ol boys even pull off a damn trucker hat and make it work. Just look at Cody Johnson or George Strait when their on stage, or the guys from Yellowstone, Costner in particular since he’s typically dressed nice and not in work clothes. Also, wrangler is great but around here it’s typically used for work and cinch and ariat are the dress jeans. Could just be my little bubble but I’ve been all over Texas, NM, OK & LA for work and we all are kinda similar. You’d be surprised what passes for formal around here. Just thought I’d add my two cents. Love the channel. God Bless.
About the wrangler as working jeans: I don't know, but I found Levi's to be the most durable brand of denims. Wranglers are good too, I like'em, but Levi's just last a bit longer on me (pretty much any other brand falls apart in a couple of months, I don't know what's wrong with me but that is)
Vests were also really important if you needed pockets. You cant access pants pockets on a horse, so vests offered ways for cowboys to carry snacks, cigarettes, dip, a knife and more.
As a native Texan it is great to see this video up! I was raised working with horses and doing ranch work. I didn't work with cattle, so I'm not a *cow*boy per se, but as a wrangler I grew up learning to love western wear. A good pair of boots, tough jeans, and a good wide-brimmed hat are standard wear for me now even as an adult working 9 to 5. It was great to see a pair of Chisos No. 1 boots in the video! I wear my pair every day, everywhere I go, even went to London with them and my hat and the good folks over there loved the look.
Some of us Londoners still wear cowboy boots and wide brimmed hats! I’d love a pair of Chisos No5s, but prefer to wait until I can visit TX and try them on first!
Really, it's true of a lot of tradesmen I was a machinist and engineer with a side-hustle remodeling houses. After about 10 years into it, I realized that I basically just needed the same gear as a cowboy, with different boots. (You'd break you neck trying to walk down a bundle of greasy steal bars in cowboy boots, and steelwork eats leather like it's for dinner.)
Antonio, You've just basically described my entire casual wardrobe. all I wear is boots, (unless I'm working out) and jeans, and I've had several people ask if I ever go anywhere without a cowboy hat on. The kicker is that I was born and raised (and still live) in Southern California, just a few minutes from the beach. I agree that it takes confidence to dress in this style, but there is also a certain amount of confidence that comes from dressing this way as well. Another great video... Thanks
As a cowboy, it's funny, but informative to watch this good video. The only 'shoes' I have are cowboy boots. And I wear a cowboy hat just dang near every day; some days, I might wear a ball cap, but they feel weird. I prefer my hats, and I'm just used to them. On bandannas, a good silk one is invaluable. In the cold, it's almost like wearing another jacket, as far as the warmth, when you wear it as a wind block around your neck. They make a good dust mask and silk is very absorbent, so even in sweaty times, it can get sweat out of yer eyes, or you can wet it and wear it loose for a cooling effect.
I have a number of baseball caps, but rarely wear them. I did wear one the other day on top of a grain elevator. The rest of the time it is nearly always a hat.
I gave up on baseball caps. I do not like straw cowboy style hats, but as I have now gotten older and live in the desert, I wear a brim breezer hat during the Summer and a Australian slouch hat during the winter.
A little late to the game here, so I don’t know if it’s been mentioned in the comments, but a few things I wanted to add as a native Texan and former ranch hand: 1) felt/straw hat seasons! Think of it as a “don’t wear white after Labor Day” type of thing. Traditionally a felt hat is for colder weather and straw when warm. 2) starched jeans are a thing too. It’s a small town way of dressing up your jeans. That crisp, clean, and long lasting press down jeans is a nice touch for church, parties, etc. 3) belts my friends. Some people love their belts and their buckles and the tools they carry on them. Personally, I carry a Leatherman in a leather pouch. Lots of guys will have a slip joint knife on their belt. 4) everything has a function. It’s super easy to spot someone who’s playing dress up and another who knows what’s up. Lots of guys I went to school with came to Texas and bought gaudy boots, stereotypical brown hats, and ended up looking like Woody from Toy Story.
A point (hehe) about the design of the pointed and round toes of the boots: these were preferred by cowboys to make it easier to slip your feet into the stirrups. A square toe can bump the stirrup out of alignment, and cost you a moment getting yourself secured in your seat.
Yeah i think the heel also was designed to sit securely in stirrups. Funnily my favorite boot since im from finland is sort of iconic boot where the toe part has sort of lip curved upwards. To my understanding why many nordic boots are like that its designed to go in to traditional skiis. In the traditional ones the strap is just simple loop, and you just push the boot in to the loop, and the curve in toe helps the loop from slipping out from front. I just love the look of that curved toe personally, and i enjoy outdoors. The boots are modern day seen as woodsmen boots even though we usually dont use the old style skis so it doesnt serve purpose anymore
I’m a Georgia cowboy. My family has been in Harris County, Ga since 1801. The reason for round toe boots was due to movie cowboys couldn’t get there feet into the stirrups with square toe boots. I’ve always worn square toe boots. Also being a cowboy is not style or wardrobe, it’s a way of life. I thoroughly enjoyed your video! It had a lot of great history and very informative to those who know very little about cowboys! Thank you for making this video! Hats off to you sir!
Actually it was a cavalry soldier back in the day who became a wrangler and went to a boot maker with a request of having boots made that were easier and quicker to get in the stirrup. That boot maker was Tony LLama or Luchese, don't quite recall.
There's a reason why Bud says "it depends on what you think a real cowboy is". Being a cowboy is more a state of mind now. The old ways of being a cowboy is dying off.
Georgia and the South simply copied their Texas cousins. Cowboys NEVER existed in the south, other than Spanish Florida. So it's funny when I see Southerners in cowboy hats. Only until modern equipment made it easy to clear vast amounts of forests in the 20th century were cowboys introduced in the South. But definitely not in the 19th century
My family has been in America since 1757 and Cowboy culture is hispanic culture how do you end up being a cowboy then? especially so far from what it was new Spain (now Mexico)
Honestly when you live in the south boots and a cowboy hat are just practical. Keep your feet dry and warm out in the elements and keeping the sun off your face and eyes.
Reminds me of when my father met my uncle. My dad was at a networking event and in walks this guy who's wearing cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, a leather jacket and is badly shaven. After some conversation they agree that he would take my dad under his wing and be his tutor. My father would go to my now uncle's house for a session and my dad would continue to do his further study and work at a university. One night as they're studying my mom walks down to the kitchen to get a glass of water (after her brother told her to stay upstairs and not disturb) and that's when they saw each other.
I am a 62 two year old Texan. I have worn boots and jeans my entire life. When in the sun a cowboy hat. Preferably straw in the summer, felt in the winter. There are nuances to pull of a western look, stack jeans is one. Required if you ride a horse, or a motorcycle. Many others. All kinds of ways to incorporate the look in to your wardrobe.
This video take me back when I was truck drivers cross country. For about 3 years I expend a lot money in cowboys clothes. Most of the the time I visited stores when I drive thru Texas, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, etc. Good times. 🤠
Man, you're good. This is very good. Whatever you can do to make men good again. We need to be strong spiritual leaders and reject being passive while we love and respect those around us. Keep up the good work!
I can total relate to the area part and confidence. I'm from Oklahoma (my grandpa RIP is a cowboy) and I went to middle through high school in Texas 90% of people wear boots and cowboy hats. I moved and have lived in east Tn for about 5 years (about 1hr from ashville nc and and 5 to 7 hrs from nashville and memphis) and I very rarely see it people rock boots and hat but only me at 32 and the elder generation seem to wear them; which honestly blows my mind cause it's tennessee. I tip my hat and greet ladies and everything "I was raised right". I get mixed reactions from giggling to honks to people giving me that "you are crazy or not from around here look" it's great I love it back home I'm a dime a dozen here I'm the whole dime. I wish people understood the comfort of cowboy boots I use to wear modern shoes when I was a kid. I have had arthritis in my knees since my early adulthood. I switched to cowboy boots; the pain in my leg, feet, and back have become non-existent! They are literally the most comfortable footwear I have ever worn!
Wait for the comment from a Mexican to complain that cowboys aren’t American. I seriously see them almost in every American cowboy video. It’s annoying as heck
@@TheKnoxvicious lol I mean is well known and documented in history, unless you're a ignorant propagandistic bigot that believes cowboys were invented as soon as america got independent from the British and actually Mexicans copied from anglo saxons.

@@19ars92 Then why aren’t cowboys called Vanqueros? Why do the two hold different cultural meanings? I just bought an American Hat Co Straw cowboy hat about 2 months ago. Whenever I'm asked why, I just shrug and say "I just like the hat" 🤷🏻♂️ and that's pretty much that. But most of the time it's, "hey man, I like that hat!". So yeah, if you want a cowboy hat and you know you'll wear it all the time, then buy a good one, you won't regret it.
I grew up in South Dakota and the further west you went from Aberdeen the classic cowboy could and still be found. I worked on my sister's husband's cattle ranch of 300 head. Great memories for me, I still wear my blue jeans and Justin boots. The ball cap is very popular too but a nice cowboy hat is tough to beat. I really enjoyed this very well done.
Put a "Cowboy's butts drive me nuts" bumper sticker on the front bumper of my buddy's jeep. Took him a month to figure out why the gate guards laughed whenever he came on base.
Love this video, great job! As for Wrangler Jeans, they are favored by real cowboys because of the seam being on the outside of the leg, preventing chaffing when riding! Levi's have the rough seam on the inside of the leg for appearance!
As a farmer I really understand that type of clothing. Especially the bandana…when it is summer and dust is all over the air sweat+dust make the worst combination and start itching
Hello everyone from Turkey. I have a huge interest being a cowboy since my childhood. Well I have never lived in a ranch and don't have enough experience in country life but only reason is i never had the chance. I own an iron horse bike for long time but Im dying for riding horse and enjoy country life. For years I wear Wrangler jeans and other wrangler stuff and last month I found a second hand cowboy hat from a guy who visited Usa once. The hat is an original Stetson made of straw. I only keep it on the wall as decor (i saw that putting it on the bed brings bad luck lol) and only if I go any village on mountains I wear it. Bcs the cowboy hats re not worn in this geography sadly, people re gonna see me as a weirdo. About boots they re crazily expensive in here I may have to spend my full salary to get real ones so I have my Harley boots for that lol. Lately I watch Yellowstone its great tv serie. Thanks for the video thanks for the reading take care. Greetings from Turkey.
Nice video. I’ve incorporated western style into my wardrobe for years. Part of what I like about it is it’s functionality and the fact it never really goes out of style. It’s popularity ebbs and flows but it’s always around. Add to that that’s it’s an iconic American style and I’m all set.
I've been wearing western style boots for years and have quite a collection built up. At one time my friends even nick named me "Boots." Once broken in a nice fitting boot is very comfortable and the look can't be beat. You do need a wider leg trouser though and the boot cut jean was made for the boot wearer.
(Since it’s a cowboy video, it’s only appropriate I post these lyrics) It’s all the same Only the names’ll change Everyday it seems we’re wasting away Another place where the faces are so cold I drive all night Just to get back home I’m a cowboy On a steel horse I ride I’m wanted dead or alive I’m wanted dead or alive Sometimes I sleep Sometimes it’s not for days The people I meet Always go their separate ways Sometimes you tell the day By the bottle that you drink And times when you’re alone All you do is think I’m a cowboy On a steel horse I ride I’m wanted (wanted) dead or alive I’m wanted (WANTED) dead or alive And I ride *epic guitar solo* I walk these streets A loaded 6-string on my back I play for keeps Cuz I might not make it back I’ve been everywhere Still standing tall I’ve seen a million faces And I’ve rocked them all I’m a cowboy On a steel horse I ride I’m wanted (WANTED) dead or alive I’m a cowboy I got the night on my side I’m wanted (WANTED) dead or alive And I ride (AND I RIDE) dead or alive I still drive (I STILL DRIVE) dead or alive Dead or alive Dead or alive Dead or alive
I wore my straw cowboy hat in Egypt, Bahamas, Bermuda, Mexico (where I bought it), local beaches, cutting the grass, etc. I love this hat and I always get compliments on it. It's so functional and stylish in it's simplicity
I was super into cowgirl outfits when I was a kid... didn't grow up with animals and my family was midwest white collar. These days, I live in the south, own and train my horse, and handle all kinds of horses off an on. Now cowboy boots and jeans aren't a fashion thing - they are just necessary. Thinking I might need a weatherproofed leather cowboy hat for working in the rain. Now if I could just figure out how to make horses and animals my day job rather than my evening and weekend thing, that would be great lol
I live in Ohio and my fall wardrobe is almost exclusively wrangler jeans, square toe boots, a hoodie, a vest, and a cowboy hat. But I grew up watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and spend most of my time outdoors so I just kind of fell into it. I like the way it looks and with my ethnicity I stand out a little more so. But you’re 100% right about confidence. It’s the difference in pulling the look off.
I grew up with Horses, so the style and attire was already part of my everyday fit, I have one pair of boots thats 22 years old and are still in perfect condition and the most comfortable things I have ever worn in my life, they're Sendra brand, the baggy denim and and my big buckle belt I wear everyday, part of the cowboy thing is the leather things, I'm a leather worker, so I make my own tooled belts, parts of my saddle, gun belts, spur straps, everything. Even my chaps I've made myself. Its amazing to see someone whos actually done research before making a video, like the history of horseman, the Vaqeuros, the spanish, everything,
Antonio glad you made this video. I think the western boot is a fashion statement for confident men. I love wearing my Black Jack and Lucchese boots. I mix them in with more of a modern look, tees, polos, henleys & button downs with a slim athletic fitting pants and a couple of accessories. Love to see more videos on this topic. Thanks for the great content
I agree with all of these, my choice of hat is actually a flat brim wool felt hat. My father given it to me and I loved it but after seeing Lee Van Cleef in ‘For a dollars more’ and ‘the good the bad and the ugly’ I knew then that I needed to reshape the hat. Ever since people have noticed and treated me differently especially when I stand straight.
I grew up watching the black and white spaghetti westerns and the larger genre is still one of my favourites. True Grit was an amazing movie. The acting from Hayley in particular was phenomenal!
Thank you so much for expressing our culture, I'm from Texas, and this means alot to me. Let me know if you need to know anything about the history regarding this subject, I'm a historian and im sure I could help you so that you don't miss some information. Reason being, I notice that you left out things like the Rancheros which were mostly Tejano and the cultural influence of the modern cowboy, which came from Tejano ranching skills combined with German/czech (hailing from the hill country) and anglo-american culture (hailing from the northeast). also you forgot about buckskins! very important influence cowboy bandanas were called wild rags
I’m still trying to pull the cowboy hat look. After wearing nothing but baseball type caps for 13 years, I’m switching to a short brim western hat and I love it. One thing I did notice is that now everyone on the street when they see me addresses me in Spanish. We have a lot of mennonites from Mexico doing business here but they don’t wear hats. Anyway, I’m loving my cowboy hat.

As an Oklahoman who spent most of his life in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana I have seen lots of the amazing cultures we have in these 3 states. We got cajuns, cowboys, Native American tribes and more. I love the cowboy culture and wear my boots, jeans and a simple T-shirt for school and I love it. We have the Cowboy Heritage Museum like 30-40 minutes away in Oklahoma City. I live on Rt 66 too so I am always getting the good sodas, see the Round Barn and go to Pop's (my favorite place). Sometimes they also have the Mexican Coke which is so good. The Native American culture and history is very interesting, but horribly sad. I have a friend named Kowi who loves his culture and hes one of my best friends. I'm a considered the "Louisianan Crazy Country Kid" and he is the cool guy with all the style.
I was born into, and still am, ranching. I competed in horse shows and rodeo for around a decade. I consider myself skilled in horsemanship and roping. Usually we think of Texas and other western areas, but I've lived in southern Indiana my entire life. As you said, you will usually be a focal point if you wear a cowboy hat, even in the rural mid-west. I rarely wear my hat in public, and when I see other people wearing it I immediately start judging whether they "deserve" to wear it. It is the ultimate show of confidence and based on the rest of the outfit can be a stamp of authenticity. It's almost like stolen valor in my mind when I see someone who has no experience in livestock handling or horsemanship wearing a cowboy hat. At the end of the day, I shouldn't care so much, but it's just how I feel. Feel free to wear denim, snap-button shirts, and cowboy boots, but be aware that the cowboy hat is like badge.
I agree I ride horses and work cattle, I know it’s wrong but seeing someone wear a cowboy hat makes me wonder if they deserve to since it is so important to the ranch and cowboy culture
Your comment regarding being the focal point is exactly what stops me from wearing my straw or felts more often. I still receive negative comments about wearing boots, but boots are "less in your face" than wearing a hat is which is why comments about my boots don't affect me at all, but comments about wearing a hat do. I know I need to get over it and wear my hats more often.
I live in NH. Not many boots or hats here. I wear boots and a hat almost daily. Never rode a horse and am certainly no Cowboy. But I’m a hard working blue color guy. I love the look and have the spirit and moral character of good old cowboy. The hat did take a bit of confidence but now I just own it. Most folks love it. I actually feel like I get a bit more respect from people. I was concerned about being fake and not authentic . But my heart is there and ya have to own it, period. Every once in a while I’ll get a "Hey Tex" but I just grin and keep walking. Have about 9 pairs of boots and 5 hats. Love my belt buckles too.

But let me tell you something, You are absolutely right about the Western Look about being Stylish. I am proud to wear my Cowboy Western look everywhere I go. Both men and women from across Ontario from the country side to the city of Toronto Love the Look! City folks and people from far away towns come to the store to get into the Western Look! The way I see it is that people are starting to realize that the Western Look Exudes and Expresses an individual who is Confident, Honest, Hard Working, Humble but at the same time is Tough as Nails that takes no BS from anybody. And on top of that, both sexes are starting to realize how Sexy it looks on the person. When I go around the City of Toronto with my Cowboy Look, the Ladies Love it!
Best wishes from Germany 🇩🇪 I'm 18 yo and really love wearing my tony lama boots and my hat from American Hat company. And I've learned that there ate a lot of people that look at my a bit confused but I also git a lot of acceptance. I just love to dress way an love the quality and I think you don't gotta be texan or a cowboy to wear this kinda clothes you just need it in your heart🤠
I just fucking love the cowboy and early 20th century look so much i dont just sneak it in my outfits, its all they are, fully historically accurate reproduction clothes from the era and im not even american, just a 25yo millenial from south Chile, sure i stick out like a sore thumb but i dont see why i should care, makes the every day so much more fun and interesting. Clothes nowadays are so damn boring, im never going back. Gotta thank peaky blinders and red dead redemption 2 for fully convicing me to go vintage.
You make a great point, “why should I care!” In a day when guys wear their hair up in a bun, why the hell should a guy feel like he should apologize for wearing boots or cowboy hat. I wear my cowboy hats everyday now and get many compliments on them. I think it kind of makes a statement in today’s world.
I work at Rocketbuster Boots in El Paso, a great pair of 100% leather boots is Unbeatable. They really do last forever and are beautiful pieces of craftsmanship and style
Hey Captain, I grew up in the San Francisco bay area when it was mostly farmland. The Cow Palace in Daly City was where they held rodeos back in the 50s and 60s. Today the California Rodeo is in Salinas near my town of Gilroy. Although I've lived in other parts of the country for the military (including Texas) I've always owned western boots and some western shirts along with my regular clothes. Even when I was stationed in DC (and lived near Quantico) I would wear my dress Lucchese boots with a suit when we went to the Kennedy Center. Semper Fi Marine and Hook m Horns
Dude did a great job on breaking down the history of it. If you wanna know really what is going on with the looks nowadays look into calling your nearest Western Store near you. And if you don’t have one looking into calling a Cavenders or a Boot Barn.
The cowboy style is also a great one because it will help you develop your style. I started high school looking like a cowboy and finished it looking more like a lumberjack/woodsman/vintage winchester poster. I still keep a lot of the artifacts I started with but my style has leveled up the my own unique bit. As for my hat I started with the classic tractor supply wool felt and now I run a leather aussie cap as it better suits against rain and snow and living in maine keeping the sun off my face is only a concern in the middle of the summer. It's been a defining journey
I really enjoyed this topic. One thing I wish you would have mentioned as a cowboy media growth was Red Dead Redemption 2. 50 Million copies sold as of Feb 2023 and the best way a person can get their cowboy life going without having to deal with dust. I play in an Irish band and an outlaw country band as well as performing as an Irish pirate at ren faires so I have found a way to create a look that has a few minor changes to go from 1700 west indies to 1890 dead rabbit to outlaw country.
You will stand out if your not around others that dress this way, it’s like when someone from the city comes to the country you’ll stand out lol but I’m confident and comfortable within myself.. but not everyone can wear the cowboy hat, most modern country boys wear trucks hat , i shop at my local farm feed store not boot barn lol . Something to note on a western style shirt is the style most will have snaps like the boots it can be pulled off quickly if something happens, they also have key designs look at wrangler designs to reference , but that’s my personal favorite brand . Great video I would like to see more ppl wearing western styles
I'm not a "true" cowboy, but I'm from the deserts out West anyway. We did have genuine Western-style towns and such out there, and it stuck with me. I live up North now, but my style choice has been affected pretty well. I wear cowboy boots and bootcut jeans all the time. Flannel or denim shirts. If I wanna dress up a little, I wear snap shirts. I love my denim jackets, many of which I buy second versions of so I can chop the sleeves off and make a vest out of it. I top it all off with my leather outback hats. Basically, think John Marston, and you're not far off. I get compliments literally all the time, both from men and women. People dig the ensemble. Every now and again someone will give me a hard time over it but I don't care. Most people I meet think it's cool as Hell. The trick is to not make it a costume. Look natural in it, and make it so that if you remove or change anything it still works. Take the hat off and put on some sunglasses. Swap the nice shirt for a T-shirt. Maybe today you're more rock n' roll than you are cowboy. Rock a Hawaiian shirt over a T-shirt with it in the heat and it works super well too. It's way more versatile than you think.
I bought my first Cowboy hat 🤠 in Yellowstone. My current hat I use on hot sunny days, rainy days, cold days, of my head would be uncomfortable, that hat comes in clutch!
Wonderful and informative content. My father raised me on cowboys. John Wayne, the rifleman, have fun will travel, Quigley down under. One thing I found that I took to was rising out of my seat real slow n tall, taking a quick breath through the nostrils as I capture the rooms attention n walk away with a slow pace. Real n calm.
Include PMA (Philippine Military Academy) uniform in your next military uniform rankings. It's heavily based on west point but it's better than west point's uniforms.
I have a formal/business black felt hat and a work felt hat both with a cattleman crown and for hot weather a buckaroo style palm hat because it gives more sun protection and looks sweet.
Thank you! As a Wild West “historian” I really enjoyed this video! (Also, I’m from Sweden, so I don’t really have the balls to pull off this look, even though I want it)
I remember once a Texas Police Dept wanted to ban their officers from wearing cowboy boots as they weren’t deemed practical. Can’t remember what happened there.
Vintage photos make it clear that in the American and Canadian West, all races were cowboys. This was sheer grunt work, so anyone willing to put in the effort was welcome.
Thank you for this video. I feel a lot of Men's Style channels guide men to look more feminine - the cowboy is masculine style at it's best. GUYS, there is no need to dress like a woman to be stylish. Women have more style, let's face it, but men can be stylish and masculine at the same time.
Clothes don’t have a gender. Dresses became a “feminine thing” somewhat recently, last couple hundred years or so. It’s largely due to the rich and religious that clothes gained categorization. Not to burst your bubble, but there’s a lot of evidence that homosexual activity was remarkably common out in the Wild West. However we can agree that cowboy style is pretty damn good style.
@@KadenceMusicOfficial my point is that a lot of what people are told is “feminine” is not feminine. As clothes are not feminine or masculine by definition. Hell. The scots have kilts and over here in America skirts are almost exclusively considered “feminine”, purely because of religion and influencers.
Interesting thing about outdoor shirts, my youngest brother used very cheap Walmart white dress shirts for heavy outdoors/sun work. They weren't intended to look nice, but they were cheap so it wasn't a big deal if anything happened to it, and because they were white they shed heat and sun beautifully. Interestingly, white is best temperature stabilizing color. It both reflects radiated heat, and does not radiate heat itself. Black is the most fluxy: if you've got sun on you it will absorb it fastest, and if you're in the shade it's going to radiate heat the most easily. Which is also why most space hardware is white whenever it can be.
i have always loved westerns, the red dead games, anything cowboy. i moved to colorado and now own cowboy boots and the cliche white cowboy hat. honestly, the tecovas zip up boots are great with slim jeans to incorporate some casual cowboy vibes into a modern outfit
As a blue collar physically active worker. My daily wear is a kinda mesh of western and military. Growin up in a ranching family and serving 6yrs I realized what types of clothes were comfortable all day and what got in the way.
12:55 I have been trying to wear cowboy hats for like years.. and finally since I live in Texas I finally found one I like.. and so I started wearing it. I love it because it makes it so easy to embrace the traditional manners of tipping your hat to ladies and being a gentleman in ways that have long since been forgotten. But then I saw a video of myself trying some country line dancing and I cringed really hard. It looked like it wasn't me, it's hard to explain but I saw someone that isn't who I am. Immediately took the hat off and put it in my car. LOL. But it was actually a "cowboy hat" .. (raised brim on the sides) as opposed to flat brim hat so.. so maybe there's a different kind of hat but generally I dunno.. I've never been a headwear person.
I agree. As an Australian one of my favourite Australian Cowboy films was and still will be 1st film of Man from snowy Rover the 2nd wasn't as good. But seeing it made me wish i could ride like them
Regarding the monstrous ultra-long-toed Mexican boots (10:22): Say it ain't so, Antonio! Those things are the equivalent of gold teeth, and they both just shout "I am an ignorant, money-obsessed materialist." Come on, man--this channel is about real style.
Good vid--not sure how I got here, but--and made me think of a memory. Since you're from Greenwood, you'll get it. Met my wife on a drilling rig just south of the Halfway Bar between Hobbs, NM & Carlsbad. She was a geologist, me a drilling supervisor. I dressed always in boots, jeans, hat, western shirt. An Okie transplanted into the Permian Basin oil patch, it was the only clothes I ever knew, ever. Got married, left the oil patch a decade later (and had to give up two fantastic horses!) and moved to coastal Virginia after a stint in Lubbock, TX. While in VA, I decided to get a pair of khakis, lace hiking boots, stuff like that. Even some shorts and tennies. I looked like everyone else in those parts. Wife saw me and said, "Um...NO! This ain't the man I married!" I honestly think she threw those clothes out. We're happily now in El Paso, retired. My boots go on every day along with the hat. After 40-some odd years my wife says she can't imagine me dressed any other way. Anything else and it just ain't me...according to her.
Thick cotton shirt and classic straight jeans and a variety of belts do the job. Looks very classy, comfortable, even in the winter. Absolutely rock it every time I can.
My outfits have always been practicality first. I'm now realizing that it isn't that far off from the cowboys. Leather work boots, well-fitting jeans, close fitting T-shirts, and in the winter, I've got a tough canvas jacket from my grandaddy. Makes a lot of sense once you think about it.

Hello mr. Centeno,
Could you tell me the name of the song you used in your video? I really enjoyed it.
Kind regards.
You forgot Tombstone
As a motorcycle rider I fully understand the functional clothing. Every time I went for a ride something would hit me somewhere. Maybe a Stone, a Bee or even a bird. Each time I would add some piece of protection. It began with boots, then gloves, bandana... jeans and leather jackets and it's pretty much a cowboy attire.

“Only” 130,000 acres 😂
Wow! For a Hawaiian ranch that was huge! I'm in TX and our biggest ranch is the King Ranch, at about 825,000 acres. It is a huge agribusiness occupying the largest amount of land of any ranch in Texas. It's spread out over four large, separate sections.

God Bless.
Well said.
Girls love wool ponchos too.
About the wrangler as working jeans: I don't know, but I found Levi's to be the most durable brand of denims. Wranglers are good too, I like'em, but Levi's just last a bit longer on me (pretty much any other brand falls apart in a couple of months, I don't know what's wrong with me but that is)
Rednexican? 😂😂😂😂 No mames!
Thought the exact same thing.. he was talking some very old school wear.. You don't see that anymore but on some serious older guys.
Vests were also really important if you needed pockets. You cant access pants pockets on a horse, so vests offered ways for cowboys to carry snacks, cigarettes, dip, a knife and more.
Good info!
VERY TRUE
Vests are awesome, just for the pockets.
So fun!
Thanks
SoCal, man I love visiting, I’m from Tennessee and have family in sandiego,
When I get off the plane everybody calls me boss🤔
I think it’s my hat
A little late to the game here, so I don’t know if it’s been mentioned in the comments, but a few things I wanted to add as a native Texan and former ranch hand:
1) felt/straw hat seasons!
@@lalli8152 Minkä nimisiä/laisia saappaita tarkotat? En oo varma oonko nähny koskaa nuita mistä puhut
Square toe might be super useful for me on a motorcycle.
Ugh. Please stop gatekeeping western style
Good times. 🤠
Wind River is another good neo/modern western, love the film commentary brother!
I love the cowboy style, it’s such a classic American look
Wait for the comment from a Mexican to complain that cowboys aren’t American.
I seriously see them almost in every American cowboy video. It’s annoying as heck

I mean is well known and documented in history, unless you're a ignorant propagandistic bigot that believes cowboys were invented as soon as america got independent from the British and actually Mexicans copied from anglo saxons.

Vaqueros aren’t cowboys. That’s like saying the Italian mafia is the same as the Crips. Both are gangs. Both deal with drugs. Both are heavy with murder. That doesn’t make them the same. They both have completely different cultural identities. The cowboy wouldn’t be a separate thing from vaquero if they were the same thing.
@@19ars92
Then why aren’t cowboys called Vanqueros? Why do the two hold different cultural meanings? Just because there is an ancestry, doesn’t mean the two are interchangeable things or else cowboys WOULD be seen as Mexican. And what does bigotry have anything to do with what I’m saying? I’m racist for disagreeing with you? I’m Hispanic myself
For real man, I live in Oklahoman and wear those exact combos with a basic T Shirt.
Put a "Cowboy's butts drive me nuts" bumper sticker on the front bumper of my buddy's jeep. Took him a month to figure out why the gate guards laughed whenever he came on base.
Nice one, Matt! Made my face ache. 😁👍
Love this video, great job! As for Wrangler Jeans, they are favored by real cowboys because of the seam being on the outside of the leg, preventing chaffing when riding! Levi's have the rough seam on the inside of the leg for appearance!
I’m comfortable with my cowboy style here in Sweden. A lot of people says that I look good/stylish so I’m enjoying myself.
As a farmer I really understand that type of clothing. Especially the bandana…when it is summer and dust is all over the air sweat+dust make the worst combination and start itching
Up north here we wear them for the same reasons and the blizzards
I love wearing my hats, and I especially love wearing my felt ones because they are a great conversation starter with people
(Since it’s a cowboy video, it’s only appropriate I post these lyrics)
It’s all the same
Only the names’ll change
Everyday it seems we’re wasting away
Another place where the faces are so cold
I drive all night
Just to get back home
I’m a cowboy
On a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted dead or alive
I’m wanted dead or alive
Sometimes I sleep
Sometimes it’s not for days
The people I meet
Always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell the day
By the bottle that you drink
And times when you’re alone
All you do is think
I’m a cowboy
On a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted (wanted) dead or alive
I’m wanted (WANTED) dead or alive
And I ride
*epic guitar solo*
I walk these streets
A loaded 6-string on my back
I play for keeps
Cuz I might not make it back
I’ve been everywhere
Still standing tall
I’ve seen a million faces
And I’ve rocked them all
I’m a cowboy
On a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted (WANTED) dead or alive
I’m a cowboy
I got the night on my side
I’m wanted (WANTED) dead or alive
And I ride (AND I RIDE) dead or alive
I still drive (I STILL DRIVE) dead or alive
Dead or alive
Dead or alive
Dead or alive
Its amazing to see someone whos actually done research before making a video, like the history of horseman, the Vaqeuros, the spanish, everything,
You ever consider selling custom work through etsy?
I wore boots in Chicago in the 1970s when bar hopping and dancing. Girls loved it. At 70 still have a nice pair.
And that’s why I’m proud to work for Stetson.
I got a many hats from Stetson
Reason being, I notice that you left out things like the Rancheros which were mostly Tejano and the cultural influence of the modern cowboy, which came from Tejano ranching skills combined with German/czech (hailing from the hill country) and anglo-american culture (hailing from the northeast).
also you forgot about buckskins! very important influence
cowboy bandanas were called wild rags

The most important part in being a "cowboy" is how well u can help and carry yourself no matter the situation.
.
Plus like others have said, it's a badge and u gotta earn it one way or another.

Doesn't mean it's exclusive, just means the confidences needs to have a bit of substance, hell just using it for yard work should build up some of that confidence.
.
We're all people, we're all kind, we're all strong, wearing the hat just exemplifies that energy.

I dress like a lumberjack but I drop and cut up trees for a living doing firewood.
To pull off a cowboy hat ya gotta have swagger. Working men walk differently than office simps.
Agree!!!!!
we walk with balls
Where I live half of our ranchers wear the classic cowboy clothes, but the other half wears Basque style clothes.

Include PMA (Philippine Military Academy) uniform in your next military uniform rankings. It's heavily based on west point but it's better than west point's uniforms.
I live in Montana we dress , " Rustic" as some would say. To us cowboy hats, boots, flannel shirts are just normal work attire.
Most people play Read Dead Online for the game features, or to dominate in multiplayer. They level up and grind for that.

Vintage photos make it clear that in the American and Canadian West, all races were cowboys. This was sheer grunt work, so anyone willing to put in the effort was welcome.
He says "Marlboro" like he has never asked for one haha. Great video.
@@tricksterjoy9740 I didn’t mention homosexuality. But try finding a Men’s Style channel trying to put you in a pretty dress.

Tombstone is the BEST COWBOY movie ever!!!
The chipmunk adventure is the BEST CHIPMUNK movie ever!!!
