    Thank you for this excellent video. Went smoothly. I didn't have time to order the funnel, so I made one by cutting the bottom off an empty one gallon distilled water jug. Worked pretty well!

      Great comment ! Note its a danger to Pets and other wildlife such as racoons, skunks, opossums, etc, So leaving an open container in a garage would be bad for other critters. And if you spill any on the driveway, hose the area down to dilute and remove it.

    Thanks for sharing this video. It was super helpful. I had replaced the radiator and hoses, then after completing the repair and a test drive I was very confused after seeing some drops of coolant under the reservoir. Now I understand that it can happen if I fill it to the MAX level.

  • @Snowdog216

    Good info, thanks!. At 1:36, I think you could attach a piece of old vacuum hose/brake line hose to the n_i__pple. And if you don't have that, then take 1-2 feet of old garden hose and hold it over the n---i--pple and loosen the drain screw. That will at least direct the coolant over the cross member , into a bucket, and not make such a mess.
    And while your process works fine if the coolant has been regularly replaced, but for say a vehicle with dirty coolant and lack of service history, I would run a garden hose through the radiator with the drain open. Let it drain, close drain and fill with distilled water (varies by area, but hard water is very bad for cooling system) start vehicle, run for say 20 minutes, turn HEATER on hot and medium fan. Press and hold gas to 2500 rpms and hold for minute. Stop vehicle and let cool. Drain and see if coolant is dirty. Repeat as needed. Then put in full strength coolant as the system will have approx 1 gallon of water left in it, and when you add 1 gallon of full strength that gets you to 50/50 mix.

    Is there no concern about mixing coolant types? I've heard that mixing factory HOAT coolant with a "universal" coolant has the potential to turn it into a gel. And since you only got about half out with that drain, that's exactly what you did here.

    • @Snowdog216
      @Snowdog216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billherzog5375 . Sure that has been a problem, but its really something from mainly the past and not really an issue today. At least my reading up on the topic. It was based on lack of timely changes, manufacturers promoting Lifetime Coolant (bad idea), running coolant 20% or more low, mixing coolants, etc. You would need to do a search on that for more details.

    • @Snowdog216
      @Snowdog216 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is a post from a Chrysler Forum. Spec coolant on that vehicle is MS 9769. Do you need to spec fluids, that's your decision. You can do 50 hours of research and have endless debates where no one has actual facts or lab testing data. Or you can just use manufacturers specs and call it a day.
      *******
      The cooling system is designed around the coolant. The coolant must accept heat from engine metal, in the cylinder head area near the exhaust valves and engine block. Then coolant carries the heat to the radiator where the tube/fin radiator can transfer the heat to the air.
      The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769), or the equivalent ethylene glycol base coolant with hybrid organic corrosion inhibitors (called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% Ethylene Glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37°C (-35°F). If it loses color or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution.
      The green coolant MUST NOT BE MIXED[/b] with the orange or magenta coolants. When replacing coolant the complete system flush must be performed before using the replacement coolant.
      CAUTION: Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Doing so will reduce the corrosion protection and may result in premature water pump seal failure. If non-HOAT coolant is introduced into the cooling system in an emergency, it should be replaced with the specified coolant as soon as possible.

There are warnings about not mixing the OAT and HOAT coolants (not compatible). I wasn't aware of that and found the type requirement in my owners manual.
