It’s time for another edition of our series revelations where artist and writers take us through a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums.
On this edition of REVELATIONS, we are going to go behind a song from 1982 that I’ve taken for granted. It’s one that once I name it and play a clip of it, you’ll likely feel the same way. A hidden gem that we should be playing more in our daily life. Only Time Will Tell By the rock supergroup Asia. Written by Keyboardist composer Geoff Downes and vocalist bassist John Wetton for Asia’s self titled debut.
Which spent 9 weeks at #1 on billboard album charts in 82. The first single from the album, Heat of the Moment went to the top 5 and then Only Time Will Tell kept the album’s momentum going as it went to #17
ASIA consisted of lead vocalist, bassist John Wetton of King Crimson, Guitarist Steve Howe of Yes, Geoff Downes who also spent time in Yes as well as the Buggles with Trevor Horn, and Carl Palmer drummer of Emerson lake and Palmer

It's a Feeling from Toto IV puts me in a trance and was definitely overshadowed by Africa and Rosanna.
There's no doubt that the single "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" was the monumental chart topping track from the 1987 Cutting Crew album Broadcast, however I find that tracks like "Any Colour" and "One for the Mockingbird" are every bit as incredible as the initially released single. Overall, the album has stood the test of time and really has a knack for capturing the sound and spirit of that era of music. I had just graduated high school and that cassette was in heavy rotation on my Pioneer Supertuner blasting through my Jensen 6x9's as I cruised the local shopping center parking lot. They don't make anything these days that even compares.

I don’t know about as good s Heat of the Moment, but it’s a great song. Maybe more fun is watching the music video for Don’t Cry - it’s great too!
Well "don't cry" Is awesome....for me on the second album we need to Chek "the heat goes on" and "open your eyes"... an impresive flavour of progressive rock on those...

Asia was a great band. One of my favorites of the 80’s. Every song was great! Heat of the moment was my absolute favorite. RIP John Wetton.
Wetton was such a magnificent musician, I loved his work with King Crimson.
Cool Man, I got to see Greg Lake with Ringo Starr and his all-star band,back in 2001. He did on of the King Crimson songs, enjoyed it completely,of course he also did some ELP songs as well. I am glad I was able to go hear GL before his death, I always loved his work with both King Crimson and ELP.
Every project John Wetton was involved in was that much better for it. Mogul Thrash, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Phil Manzanera, Uriah Heep, U.K., Asia... He started out as the young hotshot bass player/vocalist that everyone wanted in their band. He pretty much became an institution. He was simply incredible.
John Wetton was never given the love he should've been given. He was always overshadowed by Steve Howe and Geoff Downes, even Carl Palmer got more love. But, John had a great voice.
This was a mind blowing album by some of the most creative artists of the time, Only Time will Tell is my favorite on it. Truly a super group if there ever was one

Agree. There were many I liked. Asia, GTR, The Firm, HSAS (Hagar Schon Aronson, and Shrieve), The PowerStation, and ABWH.
March 1982 was a great period...Asia, I Love Rock and Roll, The Go-Go's, Centerfold, Thomas Dolby album...just great stuff!

Dude, your channel is filling up my phone with songs I used to wear out cassette tapes and LP needles on. It’s amazing how much we took this music for granted back then. I’m currently bringing my 12 yr old son into these and I get a bit envious that he gets to experience them for the 1st time. This album will be next for sure. Thanks!
The short outtake from 21st Century Schizoid Man actually is of the 1969 King Crimson lineup, with Greg Lake on bass and vocals, not John Wetton.
Maybe he was thinking ahead to when Greg Lake filled in for Wetton in Asia (Live in Japan MTV special)? But seriously, there are so many great clips of Wetton fronting Crimson out there. C'mon, man!

Being an 80s child, I never got into Asia that much until the late 90s. I bought their greatest hits cd & was totally blown away. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert during the 2008 reunion tour. It remains as one of the best concerts I have ever seen!
One of my all time favorite songs and I’m still a massive Asia fan today. Total nostalgia moment whenever I hear this song. As a drummer, I was all about that cowbell! Thanks Prof!

Sounds like it was a massive cowbell, too! Like Alex' in Van Halen's 'Drop-dead Legs'! 😄 I remember Carl Palmer also had quite a cool drum kit then! A dark-blue double bass drum Premier with all metal shells. Probably inspired by his titanium kit from the ELP days 🙂
"The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" is my favorite of their hits. They had a couple of amazing ballads on their "Then & Now" CD. Everyone should check out "Prayin' 4 A Miracle" and "Am I In Love?"

Loved Asia from the first time I heard "Heat of the Moment"! "Only Time Will Tell" is such a great song, as is the entire album! Always admired their pop sensibility while still keeping the prog element strong.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad song from Asia. I listen to them regularly. RIP John Wetton and Greg Lake.
This was a sound that came along at the exact right time. The long 9 minute progressive rock songs weren't really what the audience of that day was looking for. ASIA offered up virtuosity and musicianship without the over doing it approach that was prevelant in the 70s. It captured the thinking musician as well as the person just wanting a catchy tune. They checked all the boxes and offered something for everyone.
The summer of 82 was dominated by Asia. The critics hated them but the radio and its listeners couldn't get enough.

Asia is my favorite band. I am part of a studio band that records covers in tribute to John Wetton and Asia. We do it simply for the love of the man and the band. I bought that album without having heard a single song, because the cover was so cool. Was not disappointed. Every song was good. 15-year-old me was pretty cool.
Same here. I was 14 and deep into fantasy novels so when I saw that cover… no way was I not getting it. I didn’t even understand why they were called a “supergroup” because I didn’t know prog back then!

Professor, you're right, this is a hidden gem. "Only Time Will Tell" went to #17 on the pop charts. I thought it should've been a top 10 hit. I was 17 years old in 1982 and remember when the Asia album was released. I bought the album on vinyl and still have it. There are so many great songs on that album.

that keyboard riff is epic 80s stuff...remember going to the mall with my father in 82 to buy that on record .....I also remember human league playing on the mall sound system as we were walking along...I miss the 80s so bad.

"Sole Survivor" is another great track off their debut album-Too bad it wasn't released as a single.

My all-time favorite Asia track.
Awesome song! There are sooo many great musical moments on that album! One of my favourites would be how 'Cutting It Fine' fades from a Rock song into soft, orchestral-sounding Music; In my imagination I've always seen someone riding on a horse across a snowy winter landscape, whenever I hear that part 😊

A truly epic album of the 80s. This stayed on the turntable for weeks. I also made a cassette of it so I could listen in the car. I had just had a break up so "Only Time Will Tell" was a healing song for me. Great content! Well done Professor!!

IMHO Steve did some of his best guitar work on this LP.
I fell in love with the voice and always wanted to have him sing a song for me. He seemed so authentic in his feelings and emotions.
A bit of trivia, Professor! I'm guessing 'Heat of the Moment' is the only hit song that mentions the YEAR it was released in the lyrics!

Believe it or not 82 has nothing to do with the year that this album came out in. John Wetton said it had to do with a place someplace in downtown London. I believe it was the address of a popular disco night club.
I remember that the tracks on this album just sounded so good and powerful on the radio when it first came out.
One of my first albums as a kid!
I remember walking into Steve's Music here in Toronto back in the early 80's, and someone was playing the synth intro to this perfectly. I was blown away :)

Fun fact: The six-string bass in the video John Wetton uses was literally one of a kind. Ibanez made it at John’s request, and is the only one ever made.

I actually think "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" is better than both. I really love songs that build to a climax. I just can't figure out the end of the video. LOL

@@ProfessorofRock Agree on Heat of the Moment being overplayed. I actually think 'Sole Survivor' and 'Here Comes The Feeling' are the two best songs on the album. And from 'Alpha', the hidden gems are 'The Heat Goes On', as well as the Steve Howe solo on 'Midnight Sun'. That guitar line over the chorus chords is one of his most inspired--and that's saying something, considering all of his great work with Yes!

80's music was so damn good that Heat of the Moment and Only Time Will Tell somehow weren't #1 hits. Both of those songs are fantastic and will last forever. Also a fan of Don't Cry.
Don’t Cry, Gypsy Soul, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, Only Time Will Tell and Wishing are my favorite Asia’s 80s songs. Desire and Who Will Stop The Rain of the 90s.
Gypsy Soul was a Wetton solo song. They billed it as Asia, which I don't know how contractually. Wetton did sing Winner Takes it All for the same soundtrack but they went with Sammy Hagar because his vocals gave it more umph.
Only time will tell is one of the greatest songs of all time. For sure the most ear-capturing keyboard intro!!!!

I know that a lot of Yes fanatics spar about who was “the” keyboard player… what I’ll say is this: Downes is the most amazing composer… he’s got an amazing gift for writing stuff that sticks in your head. Interestingly enough, what introduced me to GD was ‘Drama’ by YES; his lead playing and the chords he used are fantastic.
Rick Wakeman, obviously! ;-) But seriously, Downes is a great keyboard player, but to me, his style just doesn't fit well with the Yes style of music. I do like the Drama album, but Downes and Trevor Horn were best as the Buggles, more of a prog-pop style than progrock.
@@macsnafu actually - prog-pop is an excellent way of phrasing it! (There’s prog, prog-metal… why not prog-pop?) Where Downes parts company with the likes of Wakeman or Moraz is that Downes is totally comfortable ‘staying in his lane’… he had his bits to play / Steve Howe had his bits to play and there was never an obvious struggle to play OVER each other (there are some passages where they are either playing-OFF each other to form almost like counterpoint - but it was never adversarial (for an example of adversarial playing, please see YES’ RRHOF performance of Roundabout where Wakeman literally steamrolls over the entire production to get his first solo in after the beginning of the song! (I love Rick - but I thought that it was fairly tasteless to showboat like that)).
I had the privilege of seeing them live twice, once in a small venue in Fall River, MA. My seat was in the front, close enough to see the finger work on the instruments and John Wetton's blue eyes. It was in the early 00's. My favorite "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" is so underrated.
My favorite song off the album is "Without You". It's very intricate in my mind. My next favorite off the album is "Time Again". The fact that all four members had a hand in writing it always impresses me. My favorite ASIA song of all is "Ride Easy" b side to "Heat of the Moment". I just love it. I can't explain why. It's just their best to my ears.
Agreed, Tim! I also can’t quite put my finger on exactly why, but something about that song captures the essence of Asia more than anything else they ever did. Absolutely love this entire album and “Ride Easy” is still my favorite of theirs.

Professor... What I absolutely LOVE about your show and your take on music is that you don't always focus on the obvious. Everyone else tells us about MJ, or Madonna, or Zeppelin, or Floyd, or...
You on the other hand often delve into the music you don't hear on repeat on "classic" radio. Asia, The Cure, HoJo, Frampton, Rupert Holmes and so many more... Those are the songs that ,"filled in the cracks" of my musical memory. You feature them on your show and give them the credence and recognition they so well deserve. It's why you're one of the best. I’ve been waiting for you to do more about my favorite all-time band. And this is one of the most majestic melodic pop rock progressive tunes that has ever been written or performed. Simply put, this is one of the greatest songs ever written in my honest opinion. Asia was much more than a super group. He created a new genre of music. Progressive pop in all its majestic splendor. RIP John Wetton. You are sorely missed.

Wonderful analysis of these tracks with Geoff ! A song from the 1st Asia album that for me really reveals what the band is about is "Time Again" ; Credited to all four members of the group, it shows you where they were coming from ; Wetton's hard hitting lyrical style, Downes' classical background, Palmer going to the hard, punching verse rhythms to the light swing that follows each of the choruses and Howe really fusing rock and jazz on the guitar, especially during his solo with those wicked chromatic runs ! I was fortunate enough to see these guys live on several occasions and they were simply amazing. Of course, on the 2006-2007 reunion tours, they played the whole 1st album, as well as the B-side of "Heat", "Ride Easy" which would have made the album even more amazing ! Anyhow, glad to see this group get some well-deserved love.🙂👍
Bought this back "in 82" my cousin knew Heat of the Moment and I had to get the cover ! and so my love of Asia was born I have memories of listening to this on my Sharp vertical stereo with both sides play on repeat and lit by old (now) fibre optic lamp, as you say it can take you straight back to those great memories
This whole album was great and every song was often played in my midwest hometown. Asia, Sammy Hagar, Standing Hampton, and Billy Squier, Don't Say No are at least three albums were every song was great. In fact, Don't Say No might be a good topic for you.
Standing Hampton and Don't Say Know were two of my very first albums and they still sound great today.

I just keep coming back to all the episodes i missed. Man, you do such a great job, its got the feel of hanging at the lunch table in HS or sitting in a friends basement room talking about the bands and the music. Its so wonderful to have such a collective nostalgia with all of your fans.
This album was the spark. This album cut the line between childhood and who I am now. I waited hours to record these songs on cassette off the radio before I could afford the album. Thank you Geoff.
It's amazing how Geoff remembers all these little details of the songs after 40 years! Of course he was there when they made them! I wonder if he listened to the album before the interview to refresh his memory?🙂

I was just 13 years old when I first heard this iconic album 41 years ago now and despite countless plays across all those years I still find myself getting a little moist eyed whenever I hear Only Time Will Tell. The emotion in John Wetton’s achingly perfect vocals and the masterful musical arrangements always move me, it’s simply a beautiful song from a beautiful time in music. The minute I heard this song I became an Asia fan and it wouldn’t have mattered if they never made another hit, I was hooked for life. I tell you what Professor, if you want to rediscover another underrated LP, review Asia Alpha the band’s second album starting with The Last to Know and My Own Time. Pure Magic.

Great commentary and great interview of not only one of the great songwriters and keyboardists in the world, but an incredibly, genuinely nice guy. I’ve had the occasion to meet Geoff a couple of times and he seems to really care about and appreciate the fans of both Yes and Asia.
SAW them in concert at popular creek theater and the drum solo blew my mind by Carl Palmer. Great show ... great album
As far as I'm concerned, Asia and Alpha are the only two albums that I really liked from Asia. In fact, EVERY SONG from both albums are all fantastic! So much so that I had to break them out and re-listen to both albums!

Only Time Will Tell is my daily morning alarm. I love to wake up to the intro of that song. It's perfect.
This has always been one of the most emotionally moving songs to me. It’s the blend of all the instruments, with major credit needing to go to Wetton for the incredible vocal delivery.

I was in Yellowstone National Park the Summer of 1982 when I first heard them.
I played the drums for this song, "Only Time Will Tell" in HS Jazz Band during my Freshman year in Riverside, CA (1984/85).
Discovered Asia at the tail-end of 2021, and got into their discography throughout 2022, one of the best things that happened to me musically…

Great album, great review, and great interview. I love every track on this album. I put it on and it doesn't stop until it is done, and then it gets another spin. I put this right up there with Boston's debut album and it holds to this day as one of my all time favorites, there is not a weak song on here. So glad that you feel the same way Prof.

As soon as I got it, I knew it was a classic. Soaring vocals and amazing musicianship. last as Asia open for Journey in 2016. Carl had his chrome ludwig kit. Superb performance. RIP John Wetton.

I enjoyed the interview and have always liked that song. I like that you included clips from the interview about other songs from the album. I never owned that album but was listening to it on streaming recently and couldn't believe how great some of the songs were that I had never heard before. There definitely are some gems in the album tracks.
I was in college at at the time, and the as just blown away by Asia, the coll ge brought them into town and it interesting was one of the best shows i have ever seen. Definately one of the most talented groups ever assembled. RIP John Wetton

Rush: Any Song From Their Live Concert - "Exit Stage Left". The Stones: Start Me Up. Dexy's Midnight Runners: Come On Eileen, The Police: Invisible Sun. The Buggles: Video Killed the Radio Star and Barnes & Barnes: Fish Heads...and that's pretty much it. There is another song that had a creepy looking bald guy with black eyeliner...the song was called (if I remember correctly) "guilty you found me", but for the life of me, I can't remember the damned name of the band, and I've been looking for that song to add to my 80's collection! *Can you help me with that one "Professor" (or anyone else, for that matter)?? I would greatly appreciate any help with that one!*

Never realized Asia was a super group. Loved this album. It was on high rotation in the summer of 1982. Brings back memories of the local pool and hanging out with friends from high school.

I personally love Time Again, and Cutting it Fine. Whilst the 1st one is about feeling cheated and not taking it anymore, the 2nd one is about parting ways and wishing eachother the best. Both stellar tracks with everyone on full force.

Bought this album IN 1982, a life-changing year for myself. Vinyl version, first, then cassette and finally on CD (yet to purchase digital). I have worn out all versions thusfar! I can't imagine NOT having this ASIA album, if I had never listened to it, I don't think my life would've been the same. Thank you for inviting all those thoughts & feelings BACK into my life :)

Amazing album, awesome 😎 band, Asia was a true supergroup. Soul survivor is more relevant than ever, love the John McEnroe reference. Only Time Will Tell is also very relatable, with so much uncertainty in the world 🌎 today. Great 👍 job, professor.
