I remember seeing this first time around!! Man, they were the days when there was actually decent tv at Christmas! Elton's vocals are immaculate on this!
Gosh, you guys accross the pond are so lucky !! We got lucky for a while with channel 9 in New Jersey, they picked up the BBC for a while. We got to see Benny Hill and Morecambe and Wise Monday thru Friday.I like the English humor but most people didn't like or understand the humor. But I remember at 8 years old enjoying this.RIP Morecambe and Wise and thank you for the great shows and memories.
I am stunned! This is the best live performance I've ever heard from Elton. I thought for a while that it was a studio recording that he was lip-syncing to. Its amazing how good he sounded without all the noise of a band and background singers. I actually like this performance better than the album version, and that's a first for me!
FANTASTIC post!!! Wonderful effort as well to edit everything. Along with "It Ain't Gonna Be Easy" this is my favorite song from "A Single Man." Keep waiting for the band to kick in! LOL! Elton has always been a great sport - wonderfully sly sense of humor - perfect for Morecambe & Wise. Thanks for sharing this!
History may rank this as one of the top twenty EJ melodies ever. One of the rarer EJ songs that really amazes, and he gives an absolutely stellar performance here. I lived in England when this aired and missed it. thank you for posting this incredibly high quality video!
My favourite scene is when Elton John walks out a door of this factory and ends up in the drink. I thought I was going to piss my pants, I was laughing so hard.
Thank you-- Elton's voice was so supple then. This was only a few months after he took voice lessons for the very first time with Thom Bell. It's interesting that he sang Shine on Through like he would on Single Man, rather than the funkier Thom Bell style that he had just done a few months before. This ballad seems to close out his youthful classic period of his career, as he has had ups and downs since then-- though I would say his last decade has been very good, if very underrated.
Can still remember watching this all those years ago!! Shine on through - what a beautiful track! Top quality comedy And music ... and at the time thought it'd last forever! .. ah well ..
Pretty much my favourite elton song. It just happened to be on a CD i found after hearing it on here first. I listend to it all winter. Its inspired me so muchh...
Morecambe + Wise, Capt Mainwaring, and Elton; national treasures! Happy memories, thanks for putting this on. And a ballad that should be better known. I liked it at the time and it stands up still.
Poor lil' Elephant... Did anyone notice how quickly he had dried after he fell into the water? Amazing! *lol* Thanks for uploading it, Chazfem, really had a good laugh.
I would have to agree, the aging process sucks, but he still plays and sings in tune, and the album THE UNION did well on the charts, in part because of Leon Russell I will always be listening to Elton
I would also like to respond to the comment about Elton retiring , stepping aside and letting the younger generation take control, the man is 63 years old, if this younger generation is bitter, then the old saying go's (dont get bitter get better) if you cant take the heat ! get out of the kitchen ....a man should retire when he is ready to retire, not because people are trying to force him to retire, I since fear ! OOOH God the man is 63 years old and got a hit album.....what are we going to do
I was suprised at the time Shine on Through wasn't released as a single in UK, excellent song and performance here. Great new Elton album The Union coming out later this month
+Chazfem Not quite right. The version you are hearing is from the 1976 Thom Bell complete sessions album. Elton effectively recorded the song twice. So if people want this better version, search our the Thom Bell album where you will also get Elton's songs: Are you ready for love and Mama Can't Buy You Love. Elton's re-recording of SHINE ON THROUGH for the Single Man album is not as good.
+Jason Carpp Elton recorded two versions of this song. The version you are after is from 1976 Thom Bell sessions, which is included on The Complete Thom Bell sessions which did not get released until 1979. The version of "Shine on Through" on that album is longer and much better than on A Single Man album. It is also closest to what you see here.
Maybe you haven't been hearing his fine recent albums, and there's an excited buzz round his forthcoming album The Diving Board, with lots of beautiful piano apparently.
Morecambe & Wise were the first to have stars waiting to be on the show without pay. Since then, we've had 'The Muppets,' Sesame Street' & 'The Simpsons.' But these two were the best! x :o)
Just one of their most standard, tried-and-tested comedy traits: always, always get the guests' names wrong, the funnier the better. Hence Andre Previn became Andrew Preview, Vanilla, rather than Vanessa Redgrave, Hand-grenade for Angharad Rees, Burly Chassis for Shirley Bassey... the list is literally endless.
Oh Elton John has the cute british accent, cute face, and a beautiful voice. Man, he was the total package!
Oo sweet Elton i Love his shy warm charm gentle. My Beauty poor boy
what a little gem this is
Definitely my favorite Elton John hairstyle that he's rocking here. He looks so cute with long hair! And his performance is beautiful!
poor Elton, my darling!
He looks so sweet in that suit... And the song is very beautiful...
I remember seeing this first time around!! Man, they were the days when there was actually decent tv at Christmas!
Elton's vocals are immaculate on this!

Gosh, you guys accross the pond are so lucky !! Beautiful song - lovely melody. I have enjoyed it for years.
Big Elton fan here. Loved 🚀 👨.
Loved the quality of his voice back then. Simply beautiful.
I am stunned! This is the best live performance I've ever heard from Elton. I thought for a while that it was a studio recording that he was lip-syncing to. Elton is so cute ^_^
Just FABULOUS why dont they right songs like this anymore.
Can't believe it's nearly two years ago i accidently stumbled across this song. Listened to it all winter long. Definatly a favourite :)
History may rank this as one of the top twenty EJ melodies ever. One of the rarer EJ songs that really amazes, and he gives an absolutely stellar performance here. I lived in England when this aired and missed it. thank you for posting this incredibly high quality video!
He is so cute. I can’t 🥺💖
You can't what ?
British comic Genius at it's best with Elton performing one of his most brilliant underrated songs Shine On
My favourite scene is when Elton John walks out a door of this factory and ends up in the drink. I thought I was going to piss my pants, I was laughing so hard.
"Finally time to kill myself!"- Elton John
mmm..mmmm.. Love that Elton! That voice does it to me every time.. sigh... :-)
Wow. The video was hilarious, and the performance was.. breathtaking. It made me cry.
"Shine On Through" from the album "A Single Man"

One of the most beautiful songs ever.....
4:18 His smile!
🥺❤
What does Eric says at 0:47???? I can't understand him. I LOVE ELTON AND HIS VOICE IS WONDERFUL
His performance was fantastic!! I am going to see him live in less than two weeks...I cant wait!!
I didn't know Elton John had a sense of humour. He was hilarious.
watch him in The Simpsons
Hellwyck The Simpsons? He's on The Simpsons?
Yes... Season 10 Episode 14: I'm With Cupid.
Hellwyck I'll have to check it out. Thanks.
It's one of the classic episodes.
Apu showers his wife with gifts for the week preceding Valentine's day and makes the other wives jealous.
This is absolutely incredible!!! Elton is the BEST!!! :)
Thank you for posting. I remember watching this when I was a boy !!
One of Elton's finest tracks ever.
Elton is awesome, just awesome. x
Just amazing. This is perfection.

Thank You ... brought back good memories :-)
Thank you very much!!!! I had never seen the full version!
Definitely better quality than I had put up on mine. (No fault of mine - originally on vhs tape) Thanks for the post of the full song
Can still remember watching this all those years ago!! Shine on through - what a beautiful track! Top quality comedy And music ... and at the time thought it'd last forever! .. ah well ..

#LYRXLUVR 😎 Life-Long ELTON addict!😎
Elton plays and sings fantastic blues songs.
I just wish we could all go back.... even if just for a bit. Where has time gone?
Many thanks for posting. It's lovely to see footage of the old reception area at TV Centre. TC8 looks a bit grubby though.
Poor lil' Elephant... Did anyone notice how quickly he had dried after he fell into the water? Amazing! *lol*
Thanks for uploading it, Chazfem, really had a good laugh.
brilliant 👍👍😄😄
Quite wonderful
everyone and their budgie watched the Morecombe and Wise Xmas show! I was only 10 that year and I still remember it :oD
the last ever scene on the BBC featured Elton John

I love it! Thanks for posting.
This is just amazing.
Although I never though the album version sounded anything like this good!
I don't guess I have heard that one before. It is a very preaty song. Thank you so much!
4:20 If all else fails. Just opt for straight up Murder.
4:21 AHHHHHHH! (Sploosh!)
I would have to agree, the aging process sucks, but he still plays and sings in tune, and the album THE UNION did well on the charts, in part because of Leon Russell I will always be listening to Elton
Indeed it does. He still sings awesome at 72 yrs.
Elton John.....wow!
Forget the two ronnies, just listen to those fucking heartfelt lyrics guys. Perhaps our most underated songsmith .....
What a treasure this is.
HAHAHA love him , and what a song
I would also like to respond to the comment about Elton retiring , stepping aside and letting the younger generation take control, the man is 63 years old, if this younger generation is bitter, then the old saying go's (dont get bitter get better) if you cant take the heat ! get out of the kitchen ....a man should retire when he is ready to retire, not because people are trying to force him to retire, I since fear ! OOOH God the man is 63 years old and got a hit album.....what are we going to do
I love them
The way Elton walks makes me laugh.
Sir Elephant John
you wouldnt get Sir Elton doing anything like this with modern day comedians, top stuff
I was suprised at the time Shine on Through wasn't released as a single in UK, excellent song and performance here. Great new Elton album The Union coming out later this month
lmfao "good job you didn't" classic...
What song is Elton John singing between 5:54-9:47?
It's called "Shine on through" from the album "A Single Man". The album version is very different though, this is the best version of it i've heard.
Chazfem Thank you. I like this version as well, but I'll have to check it out. :)
Jason Carpp The album version is nice, but I agree - this version is a lot more powerful and direct.
What song title was Elton singing? I loved it!
Richard Armstrong shine on through
poor elton
@77edsterThat is correct,Eric Morecambe was the Director of Luton Town.
Maybe you haven't been hearing his fine recent albums, and there's an excited buzz round his forthcoming album The Diving Board, with lots of beautiful piano apparently.
Morecambe & Wise were the first to have stars waiting to be on the show without pay. Since then, we've had 'The Muppets,' Sesame Street' & 'The Simpsons.' But these two were the best! x :o)
Elephant John hahaha!!!
but the opening is from the 78 christmas show when they were at thames !!!
does anyone know the title of this song from EJ?........oh hell - I just read on the left....its Shine on through lol :-o
oooooh yes!!!!
@mariofarecraft2 Yes, and the words are different in one place for some reason?
@77edster I think he was involved in someway with the Luton board, interesting cause Elton was chairman of Watford, Luton's closest rivals I think.
does anyone know the title of this song from EJ?
Shine on Through :)
Back when Elton still had the top half of his voice ... and his hair. Maybe.
what is the name of that song
Just one of their most standard, tried-and-tested comedy traits: always, always get the guests' names wrong, the funnier the better. Hence Andre Previn became Andrew Preview, Vanilla, rather than Vanessa Redgrave, Hand-grenade for Angharad Rees, Burly Chassis for Shirley Bassey... the list is literally endless.
LOLLLL!!!! So so so funny!!!
Was that song on "Blue Moves" or what album?"
DerekBayRoberts1 a single man
At 4:30, you hear somebody singing the Beatles' "Something."
I know. Pity it wasn't George.
6:33 onwards = maybe the strangest and most beautiful bit from any of the M&W shows. Elton can do no wrong after that.
Dad's Army at 3:00
Somebody get me a lighter to wave in the air, song is beautiful.
