Why this song and this performance are not better known is a mystery. The song is timeless and haunting, and, man, just his voice and that piano fill every square inch of the space!! This is one of my all-time favorites!!
So gorgeous. I've come back here repeatedly through the years. A friend and I performed it together in college, and it remains one of my favourites of his.
Well, Elton himself never plays anything live off the album (except maybe song for guy) also Gary Osborne wrote all the lyrics. I have mix feelings on the lp with big dipper, shooting star, reverie and song for guy being the exception. Still it beats the next record he did by leaps and bounds, the infamous victim of love !! can't listen to that lp to this day. see what cocaine does to you !!
Oh my love I have cursed the stars above That lead my heart to you But as hard as I try Still my love will not die And the stars still shine on through And the stars still shine on through Oh my dear Now this ship's too hard to steer The tide has turned, turned on you I have been through the lies That I've seen in your eyes But the truth still shines on through But the truth it still shines, shines on through So shine, shine on through the days we have to fill Though we took our love so daringly And gave it up uncaringly There are feelings left not even we can kill Oh my friend So at last we reach the end The lights go down on cue I have wasted my time But it tasted oh so fine That my love still shines, shines on through
...LOVE LOVE LOVE Elton's 'Donny Hathaway Funky Cap' period! ...I loved the Thom Bell sessions Album EP (from Fall 1979), and I'm elated that it's finally got it's just due respects.....

I love this performance! Simple elegant arrangement & heartfelt phrasing in his vocals. Thom Bell suggested to Elton to sing in a lower vocal register on these sessions, and it was a great suggestion. It gave Elton more tools with his full vocal range.💜
Wow only heard it for the first time yesterday on a BBC4 documentary, why is this song not played more often? It's beautiful and his voice is fantastic here 💕
*One more hidden treasure... SIR ELTON JOHN HAS BEEN THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY ENTIRE LIFE SINCE LONG, LONG TIME AGO AND HE'S STILL STANDING AFTER ALL THIS TIME.💓🇧🇷🙏*
I was a kid, and loved this song. Always takes me back to this girl, and the break up-First love kind of break up. I also loved Blue Moves. I must have been a pretty screwed up kid. LOL
having never seen or heard this song, i must have watched and listened to this about 10 times since sunday - it's so beautiful and heart-wrenching. thank you for posting :)
Thanks for this one! One of my all-time favorite songs, along with Tonight and Rocketman. I'd love to hear him do those two just like this one. I love the purity of Elton alone with his piano. This could have been the official release as far as I am concerned.
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!!! Wow....this was a song I forgot about...thank you soooooooo much for letting me see and hear it.....I save all these live videos....and am grateful 🙏 for you putting them on for all us....Sir Elton Hercules John.....forever fans!!! This is a rare ""Beautiful Song!!!....his voice is ""Prime!!!""....💋....love always Lyn
I can just hear Billie Eilish singing this. Breathing fresh air into it for fresh ears. In fact after her terrific new recent release -- a surprise ten song collection of wildly obscure Elton songs like this would just be magical.
John Vargo technically, both are correct. Originally, it was released in 77 on A Single Man, then later with an alternate end on The Complete Thom Bell Sessions
I live in the States, but I KNOW I saw this on TV here -- I watched the whole show just so I could see Elton. But I can't remember under what circumstances I saw it! I had never seen M&W before and thought they were quite weird! Incidentally, there's another, VERY long version of the song on "The Thom Bell Sessions" EP that was actually recorded before "ASM".
It's sad because my dog was just put down this Sunday after being ill and her name was star and this reminds of her there's not doubt this song is for her
This is a truncated version of the song. (Same with the version from "A Single Man.") The "Thom Bell Sessions" version is almost eight minutes long and is every bit as epic as "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." Seriously, that is one of my favorite Elton John tracks and I just discovered it today. th-cam.com/video/47Ghn6r9KEU/w-d-xo.html
I bought the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Specials DVD just so I could see the full performance of this! The album version doesn't do this song justice.
Morecambe and Wise 1977 Christmas show - The comedians are cross-dressed as the cleaners and the premise is that Elton has missed the show and everyone has gone home but he plays his song anyway.

This track should be on one of EJ's greatest hits packages.
Man, his voice is perfect here.
Beautiful. I'd forgotten that Elton could affect you so much with just a simple song. God bless him❤
In my humble opinion I think the album "A Single Man" is much better then what critics said about it...
Well, Elton himself never plays anything live off the album (except maybe song for guy)
also Gary Osborne wrote all the lyrics.
I have mix feelings on the lp with big dipper, shooting star, reverie and song for guy being the exception.

And the "A Single Man" tour was amazing. I will never forget it.
chris Alexander This song and "Georgia" are fantastic
@@griffithonyt How about return to paradise?
@@chrisalexander4849 oh man i LOVE big dipper... haha
Elton in his prime
The voice is crystal
Oh my love
I have cursed the stars above
That lead my heart to you
But as hard as I try
Still my love will not die
And the stars still shine on through
And the stars still shine on through
Oh my dear
Now this ship's too hard to steer
The tide has turned, turned on you
I have been through the lies
That I've seen in your eyes
But the truth still shines on through
But the truth it still shines, shines on through
So shine, shine on through the days we have to fill
Though we took our love so daringly
And gave it up uncaringly
There are feelings left not even we can kill
Oh my friend
So at last we reach the end
The lights go down on cue
I have wasted my time
But it tasted oh so fine
That my love still shines, shines on through
They are jaded, dull lyrics, devoid of any real meaning or inspiration.
A workman's insertion of words in an arrangement to earn a dollar.
Absolutely beautiful AS ALWAYS❤

Ya it’s a great album.
Been an Elton fan since childhood and only heard this beautiful song now. The magic of YT.
listen to his albums and find out more :)
Same for me. Gorgeous song.
what a great performance just elton and his piano
And two men in drag. Brilliance unmatched.
This will always be, to me, one of the single best performances Elton has ever done. Thank you for sharing it.
same!

I have the Album "a Single man" and i Listen to it Every day. A beautifull song
What a beautiful voice and what an artist !

This is something unreal ❤

that just shows how good the man is
This is just incredible. Years later I still come back to this performance.
2:52 picks up some of the 1971 phrasing and timbre.
Marvelous performance of this fantastic song from A Single Man '78 - better than the origninal ! :)
Those Thom Bell sessions were fantastic!
Oh my god, what a wonderful melody❤
If you are just seeing Elton live in 2019. Let me introduce you to what you missed.

Simply a Masterpiece. Harmonically melodically and vocally. Outstanding.

This will always be one of my absolute favorites of his EVER….man what a voice, such talent ❤

Wow Never seen this one. GREAT ....!!
This reminds me “Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters”: soft piano melody, perfect voice, quite.

Even though it was an entertainment show, but here he is so sad and depressed. I want to hug him so much
Grande versione forse migliore di quella del disco. Gran voce gran piano grande Elton. Ciao Andrea.

Shine On Through: Your Song, part 2.
excellent ✌👍👍
Unbelievable song and so well sung. Love Elton and this was from The Thom Bell Sesssions LP I think.
"A Single Man" LP
John Vargo technically, both are correct. Originally, it was released in 77 on A Single Man, then later with an alternate end on The Complete Thom Bell Sessions
The Thom Bell version was recorded first wasn't it? Always preferred the Single Man version. More reflective.
Oh no Elton wasn't done with the 70's yet! A Single Man still had to come out
I live in the States, but I KNOW I saw this on TV here -- I watched the whole show just so I could see Elton. But I can't remember under what circumstances I saw it! I had never seen M&W before and thought they were quite weird! Incidentally, there's another, VERY long version of the song on "The Thom Bell Sessions" EP that was actually recorded before "ASM".
One of his greatest songs.
Tudo que ele faz e especial
How can he remember so many songs???
It's sad because my dog was just put down this Sunday after being ill and her name was star and this reminds of her there's not doubt this song is for her
Always been in my top 15 Elton songs. Most of his best songs were never hits
When it is just his voice and the piano, be ready, expect something huge.
great song.
Gary Osborne lyric….great song
So Deep Voice I Love his voice
A single man! Album. 💌
great!
#45 of the elton 100
This is great, where did he get all that hair..Still looks so sweet❤️❤️❤️
Это лучшая вещь Элтона. С точки зрения музыки и композиции. Ничего лучше у него нет. У него много чудесных вещей. Но эта-- the best.

I just listened to it. I like the album one better, the Thom Bell version sort of goes on way too long
I bought the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Specials DVD just so I could see the full performance of this! The album version doesn't do this song justice.
Beautiful song! I've never heard this song before. What album/cd is this from?
It's from Elton's, "A Single Man" album from 1978. This is one of the few times he has performed this song live.
***** Ah! Sweet! I'm afraid I don't have "A Single Man."
this was after he and bernie split as a songwriting team. i think it was gary osbourne who wrote the lyrics.
This was the start of the bad times for Elton
Come to think of it I do have *A Single Man*. I love it. :)
Awesome. Not sure about the two characters sitting there in the seats. What the....?
I want to like this song more than I do. It sounds half baked like he didn't finish writing it
Does anybody know if this version can be found on an album, session, or for download anywhere? Philip?
Hello, Google search how to download from TH-cam!

Love this song....but what's up with the 2 men dressed like ladies with their legs hiked up on the rails in the background of this video?
