I own a Studio 6 along with a lot of other gear, mostly high-performance. The speaker can be very sensitive to its placement. In an average size enclosed room there's a lot of bass. And I mean a lot. Too much for my ears. Many folks would likely enjoy that, but I prefer a more balanced presentation. In my ~500ft^2 shop placed well away from room boundaries, however, the S6 sounds absolutely wonderful: it's relatively resolving and detailed, its somewhat focused, the sound is clear and layered, there's space between the instruments and a sense of the recorded environment, and the overabundance of bass is gone. Really, the bass becomes highly articulated. In this environment, it's the single best sounding BT speaker I've heard. More resolving than the Xreme 2 which I also own. For a person interested in decent sound quality with eye-popping bass, the S6 will do the trick in an average size room. Give it room to breathe, and it comes close to an entry-level high-performance setup. That's about as high of a compliment as I can give in this context.
I just received the Onyx 5 via Best Buy, a deal of the day for $109. I am 50 yrs old, have a lot of experience with home audio, and portable devices going back to older Sony Megabass etc, and have never been so astounded by the sound quality of a device for it's size. Absolute bargain!
Love the review. 6 does sound slightly better plus waterproof which i would never have around water anyway. The biggest problem I've always had was its only mono. They really need to fix that asap.
Nice comparison, thanks. Seems like the 6 has ironed out the main flaw of the 5: dull and trapped mid and high. Better in balance now and still remaining the unmatched low bass

Hello bro, Im watching your video now and i am using HK Onyx studio 5 as my external speaker. In my opinion as I heared here is the Onyx 6 have more boosted sound on the mid and treble. Best regards from Indonesia.

it's like comparing xtreme and xtreme 2, studio 6 sounds clearer, more balanced, i think the high and mid are bit more on studio 6, but that doesn't lower the quality of the bass, bass sounds just slightly deeper, but that's just me anyway..
Actually the visible passive radiator is quite vulnerable, so I like the new design a lot more due to its durability. After all it's a PORTABLE bluetooth speaker.

The only thing about Harman Kardon that i wish you can do to it is connect it with the other speaker like boom 1,2 and 3.. you can connect it with as many boom speaker to make it even louder.
Your analysis is spot on. The changes are mainly voicing imo with maybe an extra db or two in the treble range. Probably to improve the outdoor performance for the studio 6
Already owned the studio 5. I cant hear the difference if they are not compared side by side. The high is better on studio 6, but the bass is almost the same.

The waterproof Grill makes for an more Clearer Sound. I will choose the studio 6 over the studio 5..
It's not the grill that will make it waterproof, it's the insides like the charging ports that are now fully waterproof so water can't get through
