  • Sydney's Abandoned Northern Beaches Mansion
Built in 1939, this amazing piece of architecture and history named "Morella" lays in ruins.
It has been abandoned for approximately 10-15 years when the owner moved to northern NSW.
Now no one owns this property as the soul survivor of the family line passed away in 2015.

Thanks Abandoned OZ for uploading this video. I have always been interested in the history of abandoned properties and researched a little about "Morella" recently. Mr Parer, who died aged 84 did not leave a will. His former nurse and live-in carer Chew “Chewee” Ho Hong made a successful claim for letters of administration as his defacto, inheriting his entire estate. A recluse who never married, Mr Parer suffered a stroke, followed by the early onset of dementia. His carer Ms Ho Hong was understood to have been hired by the family several before his death, and the pair lived together until Mr Parer’s death in 2015. Ms Ho Hong absolutely deserved to inherit the house, even though it was derelict, given her de facto relationship with Mr Parer over more than 20 years. The property was purchased by a Chinese buyer for $6.6million which would most likely be the value of the land only. If you want to learn a bit more about the history,

ah they was in defacto relationship, your comment just smacks of racism, How do you know what went on, if he loved her or not,
Now of course the family come trotting back to Australia, cause they want to
      collect $$$
They were in defacto relationship so she absolutely deserves the house
and courts agreed as per links above.

"Morella, designed by Burley Griffin protege Eric Nicholls, was built in 1939 for Leo Parer, who founded and ran the Stanford X-Ray Company with his cousin Stan Parer.
The pair manufactured X-Ray machines from their Wooloomooloo factory during World War II and were among Sydney’s most noted residents."
The basic bones of the house look to be remarkably solid, it's built on bedrock by the looks of it.

I know that the reason there isn't as much to explore in Syd is probably because property is expensive and so any abandoned place is quickly bought by the government. I do know about this one abandoned house on the Pacific Hwy in Pymble tho. Found some pretty weird shit inside, large containers of protein powder and car number plates and all this Hindi religious stuff.

The mansion would be absolutely stunning when it was in good living condition but it's sad to it bad condition and ready for to fall in on itself if left to decay any longer. The legal doctrine of Adverse Possession should enable somebody to fence it off and perform major works on that property. Sure, the restoration would cost a bomb but the value of the land, even in its present state, would make it worthwhile.

Acquiring a property via this provision is not a straightforward process. You would need to be able to prove to a court that you discharged the responsibilities associated with ownership across an uninterrupted period of 12 years. That aside, the deterioration of this property is SEVERE. It would cost over $1 000 000 [AU] to bring it back to liveable condition.

I've just stumbled across your channel. I love watching videos of people's explores. 95% of them are from overseas though. There was one guy based around the flood area in/near Brisbane that also rocks. His videos are great as well. I'm in Victoria. I love hearing the Aussie accent. Even though I may not know the places you've filmed, as soon as I heard your accent a smile spread on my face. I will now be watching your videos.
As for this place, I'm sure it will be sold at auction. I'm not sure who the $ will go to.....?? It is worth too much $ to just go to waste. The property has great views, but the house is too far gone to save. Unfortunately it'll be bulldozed and some new building (with much less character) will go up.

There is another waterfront on the harbour at Parriwi Rd, still in untouched condition as nobody has noticed its been empty for about 5 years I think . The home next door actually collapsed caused by land movement(I think) which is why this one remains empty. The residents do tend to frown on others entering their domain. It howerver is not the only one , There is 2 more massive homes in the nearby area , One 3or4 and the other abandoned for about 2 yrs it seems they left quickly to go back to china with finnancial institutions after them.

The house doesn’t have any distinct architectural style. It’s a mishmash of Art Deco and Moderne here and there. And that’s stretching the meaning of those terms to describe this house.
Despite its exceptional location (the stunning view is worth every one of the $6.6M price the new owners paid for it) the house itself is not remarkable.
The scale and size of the rooms are too small for the house - it ought to have been grander. For example the front entrance is through a normal sized door. How unimaginative! It would have been so much more appropriate if it was wider and higher that opened onto a ante room or foyer that hinted at vistas beyond - to a gallery or a sumptuous room with decorative details that draw the eye forward. Towards the climax which would have been a terrace with the view as a backdrop.
So I have to disagree with most comments here about the house. It’s nothing special. I’ve seen grander homes in Sydney. The floor plan doesn’t flow in any dramatic way, no elegance or intrigue. There’s no story! Good architecture is often a good narrative of some sort. It fires up the imagination. This ones a dullard. Its such a jumble of unexceptional spaces (and I’m not referring to their present condition). The kitchen looks like an example from a modest 1950’s home. Same for the bathroom. The choice of materials is almost arbitrary and again rather pedestrian. No this ones a bore. But the view is priceless.

Marco Stazi from what I remember I don’t think any amount of work would result in much of an improvement because the house had lousy bones, as they say. There’s nothing to form the basis of a good floor plan. Given the dilapidated state of the house it would be false economy to try to salvage anything. Better to start from scratch, paying careful attention to the sequence of spaces/experience as one proceeded through the house starting from the street as one approached the house and of course working towards the climatic center, the million dollar view. Have you gone by to visit the property? I’m in California but I used to live in Sydney so don’t think I’ll be seeing it in person in the immediate future.

Some seriously rich people live in Mosman. Whoever has bought this mansion probably has to spend another $6m to clean it up and restore it. It's a beautiful area though I don't really like Military Rd. I would think someone that wealthy such as the deceased owner would have a will.

I disagree... the house looks structurally sound... however the roof leaks....and has caused the interior to rot out....but....the structure could take on new roof, floor joists, doors, windows and trim.... obviously would be costly...great soundtrack at the end....one of best songs of all time!!!!
