Wow. That song by the Other Father wasn’t made for Coraline’s entertainment, but to warn her about the Other World. It’s sad to see the Beldam turn her husband into a pumpkin for trying to help our hero. I have a question to ask about him: In the Neil Gaiman novel, the Other Father’s true form is a grub, whilst in the movie, his true form is a pumpkin. When making the film adaptation, why did the animators change the Other Father’s true form from a grub to a pumpkin?
I love how many places in pop culture TMBG have showed up in, how many generations they're relevant to, and most importantly how much they respect each other.
Technically there’s the song the other father sings. Would’ve been cool to get a creepy reprise of it later after he’d deteriorated- with the lyrics being slurred and maybe altered to show the more sinister nature of the other world?
I love how once you discover tmbg, you find out they were EVERYWHERE. And every day you find out some other crazy big thing they were in and you difn't know
I never ever knew anything about TMBG's involvement with this movie, nor did I even know that much about the band, but somehow the moment I heard the Other Father signing in that promo you posted it clicked immediately. It was hiding in plain sight!
I adore how much it feels like this video is practically exploding at the seams with how much you love tmbg. So so excited to have gotten to be part of this.
i love the inclusion of the deep cut instrumentals in the background! was very surprised to hear Sunshine, Triboro, C-Town, The Leonard Lopate Show Theme, Radio Peace also i feel honored you used my channel for at least some the music oh wait you posted both of my channels at the end awesome
This video just feels like a thinly veiled excuse to talk about two Johns for half an hour and I'm all for it. Been a TMBG fan since I was a kid (And no, not because of their kids albums, but from CDs of the Pink Album and Apollo 18, and Doctor Worm).
5:23 I was at a showing of the movie that preceded an interview with the Johns and their reasoning was that it would've made it seem like they were trying to make 9/11 about themselves
WELCOME TO THE TMBG FANDOM! I love the band, I grew up with my dad playing their music all the time fun fact, my dad actually got to meet John Linnell and listened to them when they were ACTUALLY underground (they'd play at random bars and venues in NYC) and still has one of the classic Dial-A-Song t-shirts best band ever. I so badly want to animate some of their songs cause, like you said, this band is MADE to be animated
i loved this video as someone who is hyperfixated on tmbg. it was still really informative for me like i had no idea that careful what you pack was originally for coraline or that they had a heardle (that i’ll now be playing everyday!!!)
Imagine being laika and hyping up the 15th anniversary of a movie and the author of the book turns out to be a rapist the same time you rerelease the movie in cinemas
Fantastic video. Thanks for doing my favorite band justice with such a thoughtful deep dive - it's incredible to me how much you've absorbed and researched in such a short period of time. Looking forward to more TMBG content from you in the future!
8:09 Fun fact: The same studio that worked on the Puffs commercials (the same animated characters on screen,) also were the ones who made the I’m Impressed music video!
TMBG is one of my favorites. their album no and here comes science and the abcs were the only albums i listened to as a kid lmao and when i grew up my dad showed me all their “normal adult” music like apollo 18 and flood and i just love them. i’ve seen 2 of their shows. one halloween kids show at the house of blues when i was like 10 which was so iconic. the other was at good records in dallas, (its a cd/vinyl store) very small only like 100 people and everyone lined up after to meet them after and i got their signatures and it was awesome.
I grew up (born 2002) with Here Comes the ABCs and then discovered their adult music for myself in high school. Glad to see my favorite of all time band get more love!!
it's so funny to go through the comments of this video+see person after person that i recognize from tmbg youtube. you really just have to mention the band+we all come running, don't we? also thrilled to see that this video's thumbnail artist gave flans the chessmaster instead of a generic guitar :D clued me in right away to a certain level of familiarity with the band that i need in order to watch a video about them, because they're so frequently misunderstood+misrepresented and if i absorb too much of an outsider "novelty band" take on them that presents itself as a fair exploration of their work i turn into a chimpanzee. that, and i'm always happy to see the chessmaster. it's probably my favourite individual musical instrument on planet earth
lol I’ve loved see comments from so many people in the community I recognize too! I wanted to go with the Johns’ most iconic 90s looks. Couldn’t not include such a cool looking instrument.
yeah seeing people I recognize from obscure yt videos of old dial-a-song demos and live show recordings & interviews from the 90's. this video has so much love and effort put into it and acknowledges more than just the 80's and 90's with great accuracy and attention to detail!
Two of the biggest facets of my childhood coming together. An old friend's father worked on coraline.. was really cool to see the chocolate beetles some people got from production!
i haven't even watched the video yet- BUT THEY MIGHT BE GIAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
They Might Be Giants are my favorite band of all time, and have been since I was 10. Outside of their many TV and movie stuff, they have written some of the most amazing stuff I have ever heard, and made my favorite album of all time, Lincoln. Linnell’s solo album State Songs is also really damn good.
@@musstakrakish Well, I guess because of lyrics like “It’s a human skull on the ground”. Also, as NICKtendo already said, because Laika did the video for B*****d Wants To Hit Me (TH-cam really doesn’t like it when people swear).
THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS!!!! such a wonderful video, despite being obsessed with they are probably gnomes for over a year now and reading the wiki like scripture I still learned something new from this video!! I appreciated all the little references/jokes/details such as the chapter titles and spy sound cues!! Also great to see appreciation for the spine and john henry, two of my favorite albums ever and some from their discography I rarely see people talk about. Huge props to the thumbnail artist as well, it looks sick as hell
I grew up listening to They Might Be Giants! My aunt had many of their CDs. Would have loved to hear the songs they would have made for the flick, but I don't know how well that would have worked for Coraline.
I absolutely need the retrospective on the rest of TMBG’s animated projects! Their “Here Comes” Albums were a huge part of my childhood and showed me how animation and music go hand in hand.
Making up a video about Coraline...

Songs in a movie like this would kinda feel out of place, but I would be lying if I didn’t like this to have a proper song or two.
It worked for Beetlejuice
Technically there’s the song the other father sings. Would’ve been cool to get a creepy reprise of it later after he’d deteriorated- with the lyrics being slurred and maybe altered to show the more sinister nature of the other world?
Yeah the songs are really good but I think only keeping the “mysterious” songs keep and match the movie story and vibe more

I would honestly love to see a stage musical adaptation of Coraline that used some of the scrapped ideas and songs of this version of the film.
I hate to burst your bubble but there's already a Coraline musical and it was based more on the book than the film.
@@2MKcreationsI mean there are like 7 great gatsby musicals or something, y’know? It’s still a possibility
