In this project-based Substance Painter for beginners tutorial, I walk you thru step by step how to texture a model, which I will provide.
First, we begin by looking at Substance Painter's interface and navigation. Then we will take a look at layers, masking, and how they work within Substance Painter.
We look at smart materials and reverse engineer them to see what each effect does. Then we build our own smart materials, add edge wear and dirt generators, stamp custom alphas and finish the project by rendering in I-ray.
At the end of this tutorial, you will understand how to use Substance Painter, even if you are a beginner.

This is probably the best tutorial I've seen anywhere for anything. To the point not getting clogged up into the intricate details that start to become overwhelming for beginners and just straight up getting to the goods to provide a good base, which not only has the benefit of showing a small glimpse at what the application in question is capable of, but also leads to excitement/curiosity to learn more since it is showing so much promise already in just the beginners video.

Has a beginner audience in mind, much appreciated!
The "beginner" tutorials from Adobe on this software seem to assume you're already at an intermediate level and they're very confusing

I have been trying to gain a grasp of the SP program for days and have watched multiple tutorials. That said, yours is the only one that has given me the slightest understanding of it. Thank you so much for the common-sense / plain language tutorial. Far too often gurus know what they're talking about so their tuts tend to overlook simple things and include technical specifics that beginners do not comprehend. You didn't do that. You explained things on a base level that made it easier to grasp. My highest compliments and appreciation! Please make more tuts!

I have been messing around with substance painter for a few years but never found a tutorial that really broke it down and showed me exactly how to use the tools i needed most for what i was doing with my 3d modeling. This video actually allwed me to take the time and understand exactly what it was that i needed to do to get my textures from noob to pro. Thank you very much for such a simple and easy to understand tutorial :)

For anyone who can't get the edge wear to affect the normal map make sure you don't delete the hi res mesh in the 'High definition meshes' panel and also click on curvature in the mesh maps list and select generate from normal map.

To be honest I have watched a lot of sp tutorials here before yours, I got to say that you have the most easy understand and practical tutorial I have ever watched!!! Lot of those people just keep using those terminologies and complicated theories to explain a simple step in a beginner tutorials...I got even more confused after watching them. I followed your tutorial with my own model and I got an incredible result after first try! This is the first time I feel like I can do 3d texture as well! Thank you Mussi! You are the best and you are a good teacher!! I just subscribed your channel right away!!!

Man, you're the man. I was watching another substance painter tutorial and they were selling the rest of the tutorial for $39, and it was just BAD, too much blablabla, then I came here, you go straight to the point and the learn curve is enormous. I made the soda can taught by you last week and I can say I already feel pretty good with Maya, now the same with substance painter. Thank you JL!!

Thank you for the intro to the software, UI and usage. I'm old school and have been using PS for over a decade and a half, I never jumped on the bandwagon of 3D painting when it got more popular 6-7 years ago? But I've convinced myself to learn substance painter and stop falling behind. So this was a welcome introduction.

Thank you so much for the tutorial, and for the guides on how to properly create masks without having to always use the smart materials! That was very helpful. The most valuable information I've gotten from this tutorial was the export of the normal maps, then Rebaking the existing maps after importing the export normal maps with height information from the alphas, So that the details/decals would work as they should with the rest of the maps like ambient occlusion and curvature!

Just getting into this lately and also found it very helpful. I really appreciated the beginning where you went over how each channel affects the maps/ model - that breakdown helped me grasp a few concepts better from an overall perspective. I also watched the 5 part series from Substance with the orange robot but that’s a very specific solution and there’s a lot more general knowledge that was skipped. Thanks a lot.
