Man I got tears every time floor does something to your soul it takes you though so many emotions Thomas is a master man Marco slayed his part very cool
The original version had a boy soprano for both the start and the end of the song. Floor wanted to sing them both herself, but Tuomas insisted on keeping the boy at least at the beginning. The first line of the song is: "The end" (of the Tarja era) the last line is: "The beginning" (of a new era).
The boy soprano at the start was Guy Elliott from St Mary's choir school Reigate U.K. A very emotional work by Tuomas Holopainen. The part "Sparkle my scenery.." was also sung by another boy soprano on the album but Floor said that she could do it and Tuomas agreed as you saw. Always appreciate your comments and insights into the vocals. Marko's demo version of this opus was darker and rougher. edit: the movement "Pacific" was in part inspired by Tuomas looking out of the window of the aeroplane flying over the Pacific ocean while thinking about the future of Nightwish after Tarja.
Hello The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands
Although Floor offered to sing that operatic part at the beginning, Tuomas decided that boy soprano guy Elliot, who sang on the album, version would keep that part and Floor would do the end.
Some of you said that also the speaking part is from the soprano boy, I had some doubts but I didn't say anything because I heard many many strange voice and colour effect but now I'm very curious about this choice :)
@TrainingVoiceilaria The boy does speak with an English accent though, and Floor is Dutch! Mind you I wouldn't put it beyond her capabilities! 😂 (I am not criticising you, by the way. I just found that amusing when you were speaking about how its difficult to move from whispers to singing... and how it showed how agile Floor was! ) I am genuinely curious if English and Dutch accents sound similar to Italians. We're not so far apart geographically, I guess. (I am not mocking. I do find this all fascinating.)
The brilliance, nuance and mastery of Tuomas’ songwriting and lyrics never ceases to amaze me. If you run a timer from where he says “I have 3 minutes and counting “ it is at 3 minutes when he simulates with his hand the pendulum cutting his throat. Amazing!🤘🤘
awesome reaction. This piece has a very special place in my life. I know the back story but this piece is also an anthem for those people with mental health issues such as depression with suicidal thoughts, Yep I am one of those! Also in the Pit and the Pendulum Poe talks about the point at which you both give up hope and accept the end, which you really get the sense of in this. If I may I would like to give you my interpretation of the lyrics and what they mean to me. The first part, which you note starts with the words the end!! Is taken from Stephen Kings Tower series, the white lands were the home of a type of vampire that fed on emotions, (empathy), so a person left feeling nothing, empty and without emotion. In the second part, those lines expressing a feeling of futility, all same old same old yet, hating how you feel, then the verse seems to express the effort of trying to pretend to be ok, hence those two faces, one for everyone else and the real one that is private, no one to turn to for help as the people around you seem as upset as you so no shoulder to cry on so you just carry on pretending becoming that whore for the cold world. Then there is the remembering back to when all was good, yet you cannot get there despite everyone telling you “you are ok, it will be fine” till those words just sink you even further into the mess. Then we have the Pacific, oh wow, the wishing and planning stage, the beautiful sea, just wishing it was over, that you could be under the waves, beneath the pain tucked into that beauty., last goodnight kiss and a valentine that ends everything. Then that part that starts with being afraid, being raped, not in the traditional sense but feeling violated, alone and bloody scared, For Tuomas, feeling that those who he felt should have been there for him somehow betrayed him, a not uncommon feeling with severe depression, feeling that even life betrayed you, also again the mention of the tide and drowning, many see it as the perfect death! On a side note here, three minutes and counting, yep exactly three minutes to the point that Tuomas simulates the blade. Here also note how the music becomes chaotic, mirroring the thought process of someone planning their own death, no logic, well there is but only to the individual. Yet also a sense of excitement and of a journey, proceeding the calm. Then the passion play, traditionally passion plays were performed at Easter and were about the death of Christ, and Tuomas plays with us a little here, “second robber to the right of Christ! Well at the crucifixion there was only one robber either side of Christ but in the painting The Last Supper the person second to the right of Christ is Judas!!!!! Then of course the symbolic death and the slowing faltering heartbeat. The beginning or last part of the piece are the words that brought Tuomas back from the edge. In his case words from his parents but many of us will have people who were there at just the right time and who cared enough to be the rock and love us enough to hold on. If there is a message in this work surely it is to be kind, to look out for each other and if you can be there, you never know you may just save a person’s life. As someone did mine.
Well said. I have always felt that this song is Tuomas' catharsis. Even by this stage, several years later, he still had to have Floor's vocal cut from his in-ears for the last section, as they are apparently his mother's words, and it just cuts him too deep. That is why we can see the two remaining members of the band from that time, Emppu and Marko, standing with him in support (we earlier see Emppu going over to check he is alright, and Floor stopping her windmilling after a glare from Marco). The emotions run deep in this song, but what overflows is the sheer brilliance of Tuomas, the composer. Along with the tears of everyone who knows the story that lies behind it. It still gets me, every single time.
Tuomas at 13:21 gets me every time. This masterpiece performed live at Wembley 2015 was my first listen to Nightwish just over 12 months ago having been pestered for some time by a friend to give them a listen. I'd never heard of Nightwish or Floor before. I reluctantly gave in and watched and listened and OMG I was blown away having not expected to like symphonic metal. I have been blown away eversince. Phenomenal group of musicians, all masters of their crafts. Thank you for allowing me to vicariously relive that first experience again through your wonderful reaction. Floorgasms galore. Paul 🙏😊👍❤️
The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer in 2005 . She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. . He tells you at the 7:00 min timestamp that he only has 3 min & counting and actually kills himself in the song at the 10:00 min time stamp . He said he killed himself in the song, as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother and father said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two left involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era
Ciao Robert, grazie mille per queste informazioni, it would be very nice to collect this info before making the reaction, so I bring forward the next video so before filming I collect a lot of useful information from you about the next "Storytime".
Not all of the band members. This is Tuomas’, side of the story. We never actually heard the other band members give details. Meanwhile, TARJA, has her own side of the story that negates that, I have noticed you didn’t say anything about her side of the story at all. You only just told the side that makes Tuomas look innocent and her the bad guy. You could’ve just focused on the music without getting into all this stuff. Nightwish fans are just disgusting. That’s why I’m only a half fan. I only came here to hear this ladies critiques of one of Floor’s best performances. I’m not gonna make that mistake again, as long as she is reacting to Nightwish.
@@Rosannasfriend Well at least the open letter was signed by all other band members. I cannot say this for sure, but rumours say, that Marko was the drivivg force, behind that decision, Tuomas didn't want to fire her, but Marko said either she or I. Stay away from reactions, if you don't like the truth!
@@Rosannasfriend the things that Robert mentioned were not really disputed by Tarja, she just tried to make excuses for them. Calling all Nightwish fans disgusting says more about you than everyone else.
Great reaction, thank you👍. It is unbelievable how someone can turn all these emotions and issue in music like Tuomas does. And then as cherry on the cake have a singer and performer like Floor bring all these emotion to the audience. What a masterpiece.🫶 Or like Floor does 🙏
@@TrainingVoiceilaria my name is Koos Moraal. Koos is a dutch derivative from my christan name Jacobus. Hence JM and not KM... I will be following along with your comment. I am a huge fan of Nightwish and Floor and like the way you approach your reactions.🤘🤘👍
@@TrainingVoiceilaria Ciao! Will be staying well and fat in the middle of Finnish spring time, grazie mille. 🥰👍 Wishing you and your beloved ones are doing great down there in Italia (??? In case you're there in "Boot - shaped - country" ???) Greets from northern Europe. 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙
Ciao Margo, yes it doesn't help monetization because it's always denied because of my format but I liked so much and I can make these videos thanks to my Supporter 🙏
I am 60y old. Hear Genesis, Yes, ELP, King Crimson,etc.. But this Masterpiece, is the greatest Song i ever hear. Special, when you know the Backstory. Tuomas is a genius, and Floor his VALKYRIE and Storyteller 🤘
Empathica, also known as the White Lands of Empathica refers to an item in Stephen Edwin King’ book (Dark Towers) It is a snowy tundra located in End-World. The residents of Empathica are known for their abilities to empathize and share other people's emotions. And that’s exactly why Tuomas uses this to describe the band’s situation in 2005 after they fired their 1st female vocalist. You can feel all the rumors whispering in the background but no one can put a finger on it. The general story told (and so is the title) narratives a tale from Edgar Alan Poe: “The Pit and the Pendulum”. The Pit and the Pendulum' is a short story about the horror surrounding impending death after the narrator is sentenced for heresy by his inquisitors during the Spanish Inquisition. The mental break that follows results in confusion that makes the entire scenario even more frightening. The poet without a rhyme: Tuomas had been shocked for a long time and had lost his motivation to go on living, the reactions to the sending of Tarja had affected him so badly. The poet could not make any poem anymore. The shoulder cries more: The poet (Tuomas) understand that he has no right to find comfort on her shoulder (he can’t go for comfort to Tarja whom he used to find comfort in the past) now that they cried more due to him. You can't cry on a shoulder they said you did wrong. He also can’t go to his hometown village cause mostly they are also pro Tarja. So Tuomas has been slaughtered by Tarja’s fans (All initially members are from the same town) due to her dismissal but the fans are angry about that. Tuomas had two faces. One the public one as figurehead of the ship Nightwish and two his deepest intentions only seen by God. (Pay attention to the keyboard stand, it is a decapitated figurehead and a man hanging on the cross at the same time). So Tuomas is the whore in the middle between what the cold world (the audience) demands or choosing what is right for the band future (and ask God to justify him). So Tuomas really has to be slaughtered (like Christ) in order to save the band’s future. And he knows it and takes it for granted. 2nd robber on Christ's right can cause some confusion. Is he referring to the painting 'The Last Supper' in that case he is the Judas, or does he mean the 2nd crucified next to Christ who after having also spotted finally 'takes the right side' and asks for forgiveness? Because there was no second cross to the right of Christ. There were only 3 crosses and Christ was hanging in the middle. (See also lyrics song & album with the same name: ‘Dark Passion’s Play’, ‘Death Boy’s Poem’ album: Wishmaster and ‘Deep Silence Complete’ also album title song) The fans spit on his grave and wish his body to rot in hell. (They will even not reach out and help him) the dead must bury their own dead. He is tired of everyone who’s opposing him. Tuomas (the death poet) has stopped willing to write songs for Tarja and also he lost his inspiration, energy and especially enthusiasm for continuing writing songs in general (1,000 pages erased text) He rather wants to die to get rid of everything and die (looking for comfort in the deep: suïcide) in the ocean. Even the mayor of their hometown took Tarja’s side. (All band members were from that same town and NW was their proud, so even the town was cut into halves). The last part is the welcoming by his parents (in heaven, or at home??) so he did get his justification at least for make the right decision to fired Tarja but is aware that the curse was that NW did loose a lot of fans in this. In general: Marco representing the enemy camp and Floor representing Tuomas side. At several moments Marco and Troy stand with Tuomas giving him mental support. For more technical information about this song I would advertise to listen to Vocal Coach/Opera Singer’ reaction th-cam.com/video/eOlkEgOeNNc/w-d-xo.html and read the comments of Rafael Calderon written below her reaction as well. th-cam.com/video/XaHtlM8iZ-I/w-d-xo.html The song has parallels with the Five stages of grief 1. Denial (White Lands of Empathica, the end. 2. Protest of anger (Home) 3. Negotiate and fight (Pacific) 4. Depression (Dark Passion Play) 5. Acceptance (Mother and Father) new beginning. This was #11 of 17. “The Greatest Show on Earth” was the show closer
My No 1 favourite. Here are my notes on this performance... A deep song for Tuomas. TUOMAS: We will never play ... "Bye Bye Beatiful" live again, because the lyrics are just too unambiguous and personal. There was at least as much gloom behind "The Poet and the Pendulum", too, but it leaves a bit more room for interpretation. It's easily one of our best songs but especially, the "Mother and Father'" part in the end always stirs up such a storm of emotions that it's impossible for me to do it every night. Playing "The Poet and the Pendulum' is a real rollercoaster ride - it makes me feel anxious, blush, laugh, and, in the end, just happy that that part of my life is behind me. This is a deeply emotional and meaningful song with which I empathise and it helped me to see that there was a way forward when depression struck. I am not alone in being "saved" by Nightwish, a fact that Tuomas has referred to and said he could not terminate the band because he knows they have meant so much to some fans who feel their lives have been saved by Nightwish. He feels that he has a responsibility to the fans - not your standard rock musician then. Floor is worth watching closely, her facial, hand and whole-body motions reflect the emotions she is portraying. Hands in Mother and Father for example. Tearing her hair in the Dark Passion Play section. Note that when Tuomas talks about "Poet" he is referencing himself. It happens throughout his ouvre. You will see other cross-references too. Tuomas does that deliberately to give the fans a sort of anchor. Meadows of Heaven is another example - a song in itself and often referenced. All probably said in the plethora of comments aready, but here are are my thoughts and interpretations... End to beginning - death of one era of the band, beginning of a new era. Regarding the end of the first Era, I see no point in the blame game. The band split, that is all we need to know. Whatever the causes there was bound to be emotion on both sides so I leave it at that. But this masterpiece is what came out of Tuomas' emotions. The beginning is a boy soprano, Guy Elliott who also does the spoken parts. Then we get the whole section "Home". I see the "shoulder cries more" as having no shoulder to cry on because the other members of the band - his friends - were equally upset. The "whore for the cold world" I see as the selling of his whole life to the music industry (the pimps) which is not interested in the person only what they can get from the band. The two faces bit is self explanatory; almost everyone will have been in situations where they have to hide their feelings and present a false front to the world. The reference to betrayal is again obvious and there are lots of metaphors in the surrounding words. The altar I think, is the tie to the band - these upheavals in 2004/5 were not the first time Tuomas had felt like ending the band. By the way, note the 3 minutes and counting: exactly 3 minutes later you get the guillotine motion. Exactly 3 minutes. Marco made the demo version of this, with all the lyrics sung by himself and with harsher lyrics at points too. Next we get to the Mother and Father section with Floor, Marco and Emppu all sitting, while Floor sings lyrics reflecting the words from his mother when he went back home for a break in the middle of all this turmoil. These are the words of love and then of advice, that he was given. Floor here is using her finger movements to accentuate emotion. This whole section and the way Floor sings it, is packed with those damned Onion Ninjas. We end with the final ethereal notes from Floor and here is another tingle-factor moment. Then a gentle piano ending, the calm after the emotional storm. Here, as in Sparkle my Scenery, the choir on the original album is replaced by Floor who wanted to sing them herself (and proved completely capable of it) which Anette could not have done - she could probably get the notes but the emotion is there in the choral original and is amplified when Floor sings it. On the performance itself: When Emppu goes over to Tuomas and later both Marco and Emppu go over, it is a sign of moral support. They both know how difficult this is for him - eventually he had the vocals turned off in his in-ear, so he didn't have to listen to them because Floor put such emotion into them. At the end, she does not say "Thank you" immediately, as she does normally. Instead she looks over for a few seconds to check on him from her position. BTW, I have never bought the theory that Tuomas was "in love" with Tarja. Those who say he asked her to join the band because he knew her from school - she was suggested by Emppu who had known her as an acquaintance at school. For an emotional Anette song, the studio version of Eva is my go-to.
Ciao Nick, grazie mille for these informations, i fans sono una fonte preziosissima di informazioni e conoscenza del genere e della band /fans like you are an invaluable source of information and knowledge of the genre and the band, thank you so much
The thing I really love about Floor’s performance here, is how she emotes while singing. Her tone tells such a story, revealing the inner turmoil and feelings going on inside. I especially love how each of the three choruses is subtly different in tone and convey a different story each time. The first is grief, leave me alone I can’t handle the pain right now. The second is despair, this pain will never end and is only going to get worse. Finally, the third is anger, I don’t deserve this I only wanted give you what you wanted and you did this to me. Same words each time, but the way they’re sung makes the meaning subtly different. Such superb storytelling!
I hope you did your research why the Nightwish keyboard player wrote this 5 piece masterpiece ! He was in a dark place in his life at the writing of this song ! He actually dies in part 4 of this well written epic ! Nightwish Disciple From Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🏄♂️🍹 ps: Enjoy the Nightwish ride ☺️👍
I love them too! So so much. It was my constant soothing tool after my mum died in November last year. Also, have you reacted to Heilung? I saw them live in Sydney Australia, just a few days ago. Top 5 experiences of my life. I love them too. Keep it up Deb. I love your reactions and your palpable joy. ❤
This score was not the end of the concert. Just a small part of the latter stage of the concert. It finished with the spectacular "Greatest Show on Earth"...
"Acts" would be the appropriate term for a play or perhaps an opera. For a musical composition one usually says "movement." There is a lot of discussion on line of the meaning of the separate movements; for me they align with the stages of grief and/or the process of justifying one's suicide. The only thing certain, because Tuomas himself has said it, is that the lyrics of the final movement "Mother and Father" are the actual words Tuomas' mother and father said to him when he came to them with his anguish. They helped heal him, as evidenced by the final words "The beginning."
Hello again girl! Great analysis as usual, you're one in a million with these deep and detailed talk-throughs!
the Easter egg here is the part with the 3 min on the altar exactly that tuomas dies in the song i have heard this also from Annette Olzon and I don't want to trash her but this version is exactly how the song has to be performed Floor is a storyteller here
Ciao Ryan, I think you're right! Now I'm very curious to listen "Ever Dream" by Tarja and Anette to have more details about their different interpretations :) Maybe it can be good for a new video
Floors best vocal of this song is The Madrid show , she puts so much emotion into it , dont know if being 4 months pregnant at the time had anything to do with it but she sounds better than ever .....if you've never seen it , watch it , its fanmade but its good quality .
@Barbara i just watched it Thank You 😊, i cant believe ive never seen it before i thought i saw them all .....she sounds amazing 👏....that led me to a video of Sleeping Sun from the same show .....not the best sound but its close to the stage . THANK YOU !!
Just to add a little about the structure and "Acts" of the song. I think it's interesting to think about the different stages of grief that people go through during a loss. Just something cool to think about. I always wondered if Tuomos was thinking along these stages as well? Fantastic reaction and analysis. Love your accent as well. The waterfall section and the ending pure notes are my favorite parts. BTW, NW fans are pretty passionate on both sides of this debate. It's normal to have a few disputes in the comments on this particular song due to the subject matter. Cheers.
Ciao Ilaria! Se invece vuoi sentire come suona un'intera opera con in progressive metal e ora di esplorare Ayreon, partendo dal brano "the day that the world breack down"
Bellissimo brano, veramente. Mi permetto di consigliarti 3 brani loro, per adesso: - How's the Heart - acoustic live - The great show on Earth - live in Tampere - Yours Is An Empty Hope - live - a Wmbley oppure quella bellissima performance in attraversata (per davvero) del Mar Baltico (casa mia).
The very beginning whispers are boy soprano on track. Floor could sing it, I think Marco decided to keep track since the intro shows no members of band, and to save her voice. She does sing like that later of course when she's on stage. If you love Floor's more full on operatic style here are some others: Another great reaction video SABATON - Christmas Truce (Official Music Video) , where Floor sings like that in the outro (this entire video is amazing). Also, in latest Nightwish album -> Human :II: Nature there are a lot of classic sounding tracks you will love. Procession, Shoemaker, & All The Works Of Nature Which Adorn The World (MUSIC VIDEO) th-cam.com/video/RnOdQ5WNZJk/w-d-xo.html One thing to note, all the music you are listening to now was written for Tarja ( full operatic style mostly ) or Annette (pop/rock). Starting with Human :II: Nature tracks were written for Floor in the band. While Tuomas writes everything, he does take suggestions from entire band. Floor has definitely put her touches on songs. That amazing ending to Ghost Love Score did NOT have vocals originally, that was all added by Floor after she joined as "guest" singer in 2012/2013. For the 2013 Wacken concert, she'd only been with the band ~7-8 months. At the end of that tour, they offered permanent status to Floor and Troy; both accepted and now they are 6 pc.
OK...the Colour of your Rollie comforted very well the Intro and Ending Lights, are the Earrings an the Chain on your Neck en Set? Not to forget the Lipstick fitting the inlays of the Headphones( not the ones of the Aff Link btw:D)perfectly. Where was i? ah...jap. great in Deep analyzing, learned something today. Their Versatility is played out in this, i agree. Wasnt an easy Listening tbh, as i simply feel uncomfort with the exhibit of such Emotions in an Live Song, and the Turmoil it has as Base, is an very disgusting for me, but so the smallest part of the World is disgusted nothign to care of. Just stay Healthy, bella Ragazza.
Ciao Ilara! I suggest this song for you: th-cam.com/video/Ae8pQVu-RN8/w-d-xo.html Frozen Serenade from Lovebites. I think you might like it. Lovebites and Nightwish are my two favorite bands - especially their live performances. I saw Nightwish live, but have to see Lovebites. Like Nightwish, their songs have a bit of range of style in what they show, so no one song can really do them justice.
Ciao Eric :) Grazie mille per il suggerimento musicale :) I'm very curious now to listen them...Many of you have said their name so I think they will be great also :)
@@TrainingVoiceilaria I love them just as much as Nightwish. Enough that I am trying to go to Japan to see them. 🙂 They are different from Nightwish, but no less impressive. They are heavy metal, but cover so many styles, that it is too hard to suggest just one of their songs. Asami (the lead singer) has an R&B background, and you hear that in some of their openings with just her and the piano in some songs. Others, she is going full power from the start. Have a wonderful week Ilara!
Think you missed the point of this song ! Research why it was written & read the letter Thomus wrote to ex female lead singer & her getting fired from the band ! You seem to only be interested in vocal change in her voice only ! Please React to the whole song & it's story / meaning & you will enjoy it much more once you know the story behind the song & why it was written.. think You'v missed it 🙈 missed a man that was in pain when he wrote this masterpiece.. Steve from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🏄♂️🍹
Ciao Steve, yes I missed it! As a singer and voice teacher initially I was very focused on the voice and I'm learning on the way to do this video. I understood that Nightwish's music &story need a very focused attention, there's so much inside....now I'm studying for analyzing The Greatest Show On Earth.
in 8:05 the whispery voice says that he have 3 minutes and counting, and almost exactly after 3 minutes further in song Tuomas making that gesture of sword cutting his head. thats amazing creativity, i always having shivers when i look and listen to this
Um that’s a kid singing those high pitch cause same recording from 2005 album with different singer Anita which she wasn’t that high voice. Night wish uses back tracks
I don't understand the purpose of your comment but here is always something to learn and I explore everyday new music to feed my ears and my creativity with something new and good like in the case of Nightwish 😉
@@Dmitriy88S I think you haven't read my previous comments where I explained that I had some doubts but, having heard many singers in my life change vocal timbre or use effects, and not knowing anything about the song (because it's a real first time reaction) I preferred not to say nothing not being sure. In any case these videos are for me and for my community food for thought so if this was the goal of your comment I appreciate it and thank you 😉
So, what is your advice? What is your message? Surely there must be a goal to this comment. Bare in mind that she is vocal coach in contemporary singing, not in church choirs, classical or opera. It is perfectly reasonable to miss something. I would not expect my cardiologist to be a perfect brain surgeon either.... But that is no reason to dismiss the cardiologist as a doctor! You know Tuomas writes songs about people like you... And not in a positive way.
It's just that I've never seen a vocal coach or singer not figure out it's a boy soprano before. Julia Nilon questioned herself for a second or two, but that was about it. I don't hold it against her or put her down or anything. It's just a bit odd she didn't figure it out after several more listens, that's all. I was a classic rock drummer, bassist and singer for many years. I was fooled at first, but on the next listen I realized the voice wasn't as full as an adult voice.
Hi guys, the purpose of these videos for me is to increase my musical culture, in fact I always compare myself with the community because fans are a precious source of information, they know many things more than me, who I'm entering now as a curious listener and with open mind. I have to say that I had some doubts, but I didn't say anything about it because in my life I've heard singers making every type of colours and sound and I'm open to everything, I don't like to judge without knowing in depth. For example my friend had some doubts about Floor's speech part, because he had heard her speak in an interview and her speech usually stays on slightly lower notes. Having said that, I'm just pleased to discover things so thank you for making everything clearer thanks to your comments, in any case they are all wonderful voices (let's not forget also the skill of Marko who plays even while singing, wonderful!)
Masterpiece ! Who else but Tuomas could say I only have three minutes and counting then in exactly three minutes to the second the blade falls ? Love how the band members look out for Tuomas. The riff Marco plays in dark passion play without looking is mind blowing .😊

How to harmonize beauty, subtlety, pain, anger, hope and redemption in a single magnificent work of art. Your nods say it all, Training Voice.
The original version had a boy soprano for both the start and the end of the song. Floor wanted to sing them both herself, but Tuomas insisted on keeping the boy at least at the beginning.
The first line of the song is: "The end" (of the Tarja era) the last line is: "The beginning" (of a new era).
it's still boy in the beginning.
@@Gibbetoo You didn't read the comment fully, did you?
@@jefforymitchell5697 maybe not, it was early in the morning.
@@Gibbetoo Yes..
I was thinking, Guy Williams is probably pushing 30 now.
Every song Floor sings is MAGICAL.
You're right!!!
Hello
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005.
Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen
Greetings from the Netherlands
Although Floor offered to sing that operatic part at the beginning, Tuomas decided that boy soprano guy Elliot, who sang on the album, version would keep that part and Floor would do the end.
Some of you said that also the speaking part is from the soprano boy, I had some doubts but I didn't say anything because I heard many many strange voice and colour effect but now I'm very curious about this choice :)
@@TrainingVoiceilaria According to the CD booklet. "Lead boy soprano: Guy Elliott / 2nd boy soprano & voice: Tom Williams"
@TrainingVoiceilaria The boy does speak with an English accent though, and Floor is Dutch! Mind you I wouldn't put it beyond her capabilities! 😂 (I am not criticising you, by the way. I just found that amusing when you were speaking about how its difficult to move from whispers to singing... and how it showed how agile Floor was! )
I am genuinely curious if English and Dutch accents sound similar to Italians.
Paul 🙏😊👍❤️

Thank you :)
This track is about 2/3 of the way through this show.
The final track is "The Greatest Show On Earth" an even longer undulating piece.
Molto bene, signora. Thanks for not talking over the song as so many reactors like to do. And much appreciation for your insight.
Ciao Joe, thank you so much :)

The song has parallels with the Five stages of grief
1. Denial (White Lands of Empathica, the end.
2. Protest of anger (Home)
3. Negotiate and fight (Pacific)
4. Depression (Dark Passion Play)
On the performance itself:
When Emppu goes over to Tuomas and later both Marco and Emppu go over, it is a sign of moral support.
Ciao Nick, grazie mille for these informations, i fans sono una fonte preziosissima di informazioni e conoscenza del genere e della band /fans like you are an invaluable source of information and knowledge of the genre and the band, thank you so much
Amazing, thank you!!!!
Welcome here 🤗
The thing I really love about Floor’s performance here, is how she emotes while singing.
You said well, she is a perfect storyteller

Grazie mille, greetings from Italy 🇮🇹
Geautiful🥰🥰🥰
"Acts" would be the appropriate term for a play or perhaps an opera. For a musical composition one usually says "movement." There is a lot of discussion on line of the meaning of the separate movements; for me they align with the stages of grief and/or the process of justifying one's suicide. The only thing certain, because Tuomas himself has said it, is that the lyrics of the final movement "Mother and Father" are the actual words Tuomas' mother and father said to him when he came to them with his anguish. They helped heal him, as evidenced by the final words "The beginning."
Ciao Randal, Thank you so much for these precious info, greetings from Italy 🇮🇹
Hello again girl! Great analysis as usual, you're one in a million with these deep and detailed talk-throughs!
With Nightwish ALWAYS let the recording run untill THE END, do not stop before that!
Ciao Rients in my first time Reaction I didn't stop it till the end as always 😊
@@TrainingVoiceilaria Ah, ok! thanks! 😎🤘
I like to listen before talking ;)
@@TrainingVoiceilaria Well, you missed Floor's "Thank You"
@@Meine.Postma i am absolute sure, she didnt missinterpreted the Song bcs of that. but yes, sometimes, Floors last Words are mezmerizing, agreed:)
the Easter egg here is the part with the 3 min on the altar exactly that tuomas dies in the song i have heard this also from Annette Olzon and I don't want to trash her but this version is exactly how the song has to be performed Floor is a storyteller here
Ciao Ryan, I think you're right!
Ciao Silver, thank you for the advice, now I'm so curious!!!
@Barbara i just watched it Thank You 😊, i cant believe ive never seen it before i thought i saw them all .....she sounds amazing 👏....that led me to a video of Sleeping Sun from the same show .....not the best sound but its close to the stage . THANK YOU !!
@@TrainingVoiceilaria Your Welcome 🙏
@Barbara i agree 1000% , i saw them in NYC last year in a very small venue , best show ive ever seen .
well done
Grazie mille
Just to add a little about the structure and "Acts" of the song. I think it's interesting to think about the different stages of grief that people go through during a loss. Just something cool to think about. I always wondered if Tuomos was thinking along these stages as well? Fantastic reaction and analysis. Love your accent as well. The waterfall section and the ending pure notes are my favorite parts. BTW, NW fans are pretty passionate on both sides of this debate. It's normal to have a few disputes in the comments on this particular song due to the subject matter. Cheers.
Edited cuz i'm a terrible speller.
Greetings from Italy🇮🇹
Yeah, If Floor wouldn't be Dutch originally I'd call her Swiis army knife of metal singing. She really can do it all.
She is a great performer! An example of a professional singer with many many skills
I love your analysis!!!Next song The greatest show in earth, its 15 minutes song.I wish all the best!!!
Ciao Petro, Grazie mille, I'm glad you appreciate my video, greetings from Italy :)
@@TrainingVoiceilaria forca Italia from Cyprus 😊
Ciao Ilaria!
Se invece vuoi sentire come suona un'intera opera con in progressive metal e ora di esplorare Ayreon, partendo dal brano "the day that the world breack down"
Ciao Elena, grazie per i suggerimenti musicali, segno tutto :)
That first part is not sung by Floor. It is a choirboy singing treble.
👋👋👋❤️❤️❤️. Like.....
Bellissimo brano, veramente.
- How's the Heart - acoustic live
- The great show on Earth - live in Tampere
- Yours Is An Empty Hope - live - a Wmbley oppure quella bellissima performance in attraversata (per davvero) del Mar Baltico (casa mia).
The very beginning whispers are boy soprano on track. Floor could sing it, I think Marco decided to keep track since the intro shows no members of band, and to save her voice. She does sing like that later of course when she's on stage.
If you love Floor's more full on operatic style here are some others:
Another great reaction video SABATON - Christmas Truce (Official Music Video) , where Floor sings like that in the outro (this entire video is amazing).
Also, in latest Nightwish album -> Human :II: Nature there are a lot of classic sounding tracks you will love. Procession, Shoemaker, &
All The Works Of Nature Which Adorn The World (MUSIC VIDEO)
th-cam.com/video/RnOdQ5WNZJk/w-d-xo.html
One thing to note, all the music you are listening to now was written for Tarja ( full operatic style mostly ) or Annette (pop/rock).
You need to react to Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Not What You See ft. Moriah Formica. It is incredible!!
Ciao Steve, thank you for the advice🤗

Ciao Mike, yes I've noticed something strange :)

I don't understand the purpose of your comment but here is always something to learn and I explore everyday new music to feed my ears and my creativity with something new and good like in the case of Nightwish 😉
@@TrainingVoiceilaria how could the boy's voice be confused with the Floor`s voice?
@@Dmitriy88S I think you haven't read my previous comments where I explained that I had some doubts but, having heard many singers in my life change vocal timbre or use effects, and not knowing anything about the song (because it's a real first time reaction) I preferred not to say nothing not being sure. In any case these videos are for me and for my community food for thought so if this was the goal of your comment I appreciate it and thank you 😉
So you call yourself a Vocal Coach and you can't recognise a boy soprano in the first part? LOL
Most reactors do that, even vocal coaches.
Have seen several coaches miss that. Also several who picks it up immediately.
I assume that comes which kind of music coach is expert in.
Masterpiece ! Who else but Tuomas could say I only have three minutes and counting then in exactly three minutes to the second the blade falls ?
Love how the band members look out for Tuomas.
The riff Marco plays in dark passion play without looking is mind blowing .😊
