Hello everyone! Hope you're all doing well.
I'd really like to address a few comments i've recieved, and some i'll more than likely get in the future...
So when I recorded this reaction, I actually asked the NW discord server to help me pick out a series of videos, and this one was always earmarked for "Do it once you know a bit more about Nightwish", but when it came to which one to pick, I'd forgotten what it was about Poet that was important, just that it *was* important, so I picked it to do on this day.
Now the reason that I had a complete brain fart and jumped into this song with both feet is that I was probably at my most medicated at this point. I was having spinal issues at the time, and was on neuropathic painkillers and tramadol, and ended up on them for months. It was grim, I was basically a zombie, I would have times where I just lay in a heap and try and block out the pain (even on these painkillers, it never let up). I couldn't sleep more than a couple of broken hours sleep a night, and I was at my wits end. Turns out I actually ended up with Central Sensitization, which is where your central nervous system goes bonkers, but anyway, I digress....
Looking back on this *now* from fresh eyes, I would have done a lot differently. I put it up because I love the band, and hope that my enthusiasm for them came through, even with a limited understanding of the piece as a whole (I tend to go into reactions "blind" as I want to get my gut feeling recorded, rather than researching and possibly influencing myself subconciously, if that makes sense).
Bottom line though, if I upset or anger any of you, then I apologise unreservedly, it's NEVER my intention to offend or cause upset, so If I have, then please know I feel grim about causing that. I love the band, love the fans of the band, and I hope that I haven't done any harm.
    Sam x

To all the people scolding him for not doing the proper research. If it was mandatory for this song, it probably would have been included. You should be able to listen to a song, even this one, without a backstory. If a song is good enough, and this one is, it should hold up on it's own without anything supporting it. And finally, this man is taking the time and energy to react to something dear to us. We can like it or dislike it, but that does not give us the right to be telling him what to do. I'm seeing so much "you need to" and "you should have". No he doesn't!

    • @Meine.Postma
      @Meine.Postma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

I think you are absolutely right. Also knowing the backstory adds such an extra emotional level that it increases your "consumption" of the performance. So if people say to lookup the backstory, it is just because they want the reactor to experience that extra layer.
But to scold a reactor who does not research is ridiculous.

I think that this song stands on itself just without the background story. However, it is fair to say that with the background story, this song can make you feel things a little deeper still. Words do have meaning and that meaning is lost when you don't know what the song is about. Also, he's a vocal coach apparently, and how can he comment on her diction and emphasis and tone when he's unaware of what the meaning of what she sings is. As for him taking the time to react to something, he's in it for the exposure and the money. Never forget that. By commenting and viewing these videos he makes money off us and Nightwish...and Nightwish is a good money maker for youtubers. That's fine mind you, but don't make it sound like he's doing it out of the goodness of his heart.

And absolutely true. That's what sets her apart from many. She has the ability to impart that emotion to the listener, no matter what she is singing. Her stage presence and command is akin to Freddie Mercury. I was fortunate enough to see Freddie and Queen well before AIDS took him from us. The same command of the audience and stage presence that Floor has. What a talented lady!

All those comments saying that you need to/should research the lyrics and being mean about it and saying it's a bad reaction because you didn't, show me again all the parts of the internet I hate.
No one of us had the context when first listening to the song, I didn't even have much context to Nightwish at the point when I first listened to Dark Passion Play, just my friends saying how great the singer is and I didn't understand it because, yeah the singer is ok but not that outstanding? When I said that to them, they told me I apparently started with the "wrong" end of NW and they meant Tarja and not Anette, but I at that point didn't even now they changed singers.
So when I watch a reaction video I want the person's initial unbiased reaction and research can alter that. My first impression of NW was "yeah ok" but then I dove deeper into it and it changed my perspective. That's what context does. And it is not a bad thing to first listen without context, especially if you - as a vocal coach - focus on the technicalities of Floor's voice.
You shouldn't have to apologize. You are not the first reactor to go in blind either. People just need to calm down.
So for me all that is left to say is: Thank you! And I think this was a really great reaction!
(Sorry that I went off on a bit of a rant there)

I agree, consuming art should be a personal experience, whether you like it or not comes down to how it speaks to you, how it meets your emotions and your mind.. I wanted to join some kind of fan club just because i love the technical aspects of the composition aspects, the orchestral stuff, how they mix it with a metal band (which is extremely tricky when you have this vast array of instruments all battling for space in a limited sound spectrum)
I found a fan club and regretted it. No discussion about it with interest in the music, just mainly gushing over the singers and showing off their knowledge about the tiniest details about the band, the songs or their history. Competitive fanaticism i'd call it lol. But yes, i find it irritating when people say to you "THIS is what this song means, you should look it up" like you need to do a load of prep work before listening to a song to enjoy it to it's fullest. You could see it as soon as Human Nature came out, you had the people obsessively trying to figure out the meaning of every line so they could inform everyone else, and the people that, as usual with NW, just moan about it not being metal enough or because Harvest doesn't sound like a normal Nightwish song... like, jeez... THIS EXACT SONG talks about feeling enslaved to insatiable fans that care more about the controversy surrounding the singer drama than the actual music. Just let artists be artists, if the so-called 'die hard fans' had their way every album would sound the same and the band would be miserable. Just let Tuomas do his magic and get some enjoyment out of it.
Sorry lol you got me going a bit there.

Not for our sake but for their own, it adds such astronomical levels of emotion.

I am a Nightwish fan and I think anyone who says people have to research ANY song to be able to listen to it and enjoy it as face value is just dumb, they can always research later when they fall down the rabbit hole and then they get to relisten and hear it again through a fresh lens all new like for the first time, thats a gift Id wish on anyone.
Its getting them to the rabbit hole that is the thing so why would we tell people not to listen to what is one of the greatest pieces of music ive ever heard (even without knowing the meaning behind it) surely telling them to listen to this song full stop would be the fastest way to get them into the Nightwish army right?

The boy soprano at the start is Guy Elliott from St Mary's Reigate Choir School. Floor chose to sing the part "Sparkle my...." instead of the backing track..... From the whispered "3 minutes and counting" to when Tuomas "Cuts" his head off is 3 minutes!!!... Yes, even the breathing points are planned with great detail!...It is okay that you didn't know the back story - it can create a more honest and impartial reaction... Well done!

Dude, read your pinned comment and you definitely look stiff in this. I hope you're feeling better. And hell, man, you're a vocal coach doing reactions on singing, primarily; knowing the meaning behind the song is one thing, but it doesn't take away at all from what you're doing here. No problem at all with the reaction. Always appreciate your insight. Only beef I have is MORE NIGHTWISH! 😁 Would love to see a reaction on I Want My Tears Back and/or Dead Boy's Poem from Buenos Aires 2018. I think you'll love them both. Tears has a folky vibe and is just really fun. Dead Boy's Poem really showcases Floor's vocals. Lastly, you mentioned about Floor really "feeling" the music. She recently revealed - at least it's the first time I heard it - that's she's "high sensitive" and that gives her that extra emotion in her delivery that I've not seen anyone match. Tuomas the keyboard player wrote this as a lyrical suicide when depressed from the reaction of sacking the 1st lead vocalist Tarja Turunen. The title is a play on the title of the Edgar Alan Poe horror story The Pit and the Pendulum, where a swinging blade slowly descends towards the victim strapped to a table beneath. The song is divided into 5 parts, The White Lands of Empathica, Home, The Pacific, Dark Passion Play , Mother and Father.

Yes, this is a very significant song for nightwish; very lyrically personal, and yes, research prior to certainly helps understand it, BUT there is also very much to be said for "blind reactions", ESPECIALLY with nightwish, where the music is so expertly composed to lead you through emotions and, as you so aptly pointed out, Floor's tendency to FEEL EVERY NOTE SHE SINGS and her vocal ability to pass that tangibility of feeling onto the listener.....so even without the backstory or research, the listener still is VERY capable of not just enjoying this song but truely GETTING it. You have nothing to apologize for. Great reaction. By your pinned comment, it sounds like you are on the mend, but hope you continue to get better.

I'm glad you're on the mend. Honestly, don't waste your time on the haters. Your reaction was fine and your research, or lack thereof, is irrelevant. I knew nothing about this piece when I first heard it; it still had a huge emotional impact. Because of that, I went back to try to understand it later and only then did I learn the back story. That knowledge increased the impact, but it didn't change the fact that it was a beautiful piece to begin with and, had I not done the research, I would have loved it anyway.

The cool thing is that even on your first reaction to it, without knowing the context of it and not catching most of the lyrics because you were focused on quality (which is totally okay), you still managed to catch that Tuomas is the sort of glue holding it all together and that he feels what he wrote on a very emotional level. There are a lot of folks who have reacted to this without context and never seemed to catch it, or they get distracted by Emppu being by him so much and thinking that's just him being playful like he usually is.

(NW army perspective:) You’re not a music critic, you’re a vocal coach and your observations on your medium are spot-on. Wanna talk about Tuomas’ inspirations concerning the composition? Needs a bit of work, but that’s not the intention. Want to express your impressions of the performance? Job done, and well done. Good reaction. As a musician/songwriter, it’s good to remember that no matter what goes into a song, the work is what it is and should be experienced as, and stand on, its own. I think we’ve gotten a little spoiled with so many NW reactions flooding TH-cam. After seeing 30 people say the same thing about a part of a song, when someone doesn’t say it there is a feeling of disappointment. I experience it too, but I have to remember that everyone is different and comes in with different abilities.
Unfortunately Nightwish’s songs are so good, and hold such a special place for so many of us that we want YOU to love it as much, and in the same way, as us. Also unfortunately I think some reactors fake their excitement for the band because they want the views. Of course more reactors love the band and give genuine love. Anyway, no need to apologize.

I was among the first to tell reactors to do their research for this song, but I have came to conclusion, that no matter how much research you do, it will never be the same than it was for us (old fans). Of course it helps to understand some of the lyrics and quotes, but emotionally, it can't be the same. But that is of course relative thing. Someone never cries no matter what, and others cries their eyes out from basic love song.
I'm an old fan since 1998, and Tarja's departure was quite a shock. Then they got Anette, and it was another shock. Their sound was totally changed, and I didn't like it, so abandoned the band. In Finland they played this new NW on radio quite a lot, but I just couldn't feel a thing. Anette sounded too poppy for me. So I never get into this song with Anette. I probably heard it, but I didn't pay attention. (since this I have learnt to accept Anette's vocals, and even like her on some songs).
Then years and years later I listened this song with Floor, and I already knew what this is about, and it was one of the most emotional thing I have experienced with music. I just thought those lines like "On the shore, we sat and hoped. Under the same pale moon, whose guiding light chose you all", and it made me miss old NW so much. They had such a "Cinderella story" going on. I get it now, that it was impossible situation to continue with Tarja. She was going to leave in anyways, and when the chemistry is gone, you can't just conjure it back.
So, with all that said, I'm very happy we now have Floor...and still have Nightwish.

Never understood the whole “do the research” thing some people keep demanding. How often do you do research for a song before hearing it for the first time? What about when listening to radio in the car? Do you slam the power button to turn it off so you can research the song first? I’ve been a Nightwish fan for nearly 20 years and I heard Poet before I researched its meaning. The fact that it is such a good song and so emotionally charged drove me to research it afterward and didn’t reduce my enjoyment or appreciation for the song.

Hi Sam, thanks for reacting and for your note in the top. Hope you see there are lots of supporters who, like me, have come to enjoy your contributions here. We will stay!
I'd like to add something maybe not mentioned by others. The last few months the playing field has changed a bit. Music-wise, the standard for reactions has gone up because of Chase Carneson, especially for metal. Voice wise there are now Julia Nylon and Elizabeth Zharov (The Charismatic Voice). These specialists are enormously dedicated to band aspects, techniques and song meanings and how these come together. They are very focused and descriptive. Might want to see their PATP reactions.... They have spoiled us hard core fans.
The former premiere league like yourself, rebecca vocal athlete, vocal splendour, the voice love company, elvann have our admiration as well, but there is a bit less analysis there combined with lots of love for singers and singing and sometimes less interest in song meanings and emotional impact.
Just saying. I don't know where you want to be in this playing field. Your laid back style, positivity and humor are dear to me. Backside coin of these qualities can be that you may risk, as happened here, seeming to be not very involved in or considerate of the impact of the song. But hey, you have explained the situation!
Wishing you a good recovery, stay safe and I'm looking out for next reaction videos Sam!

That same drummer is in another band called Wintersun.
If you want to see him have a SHIFT AND A HALF, look up the song Sons of Winter and Stars (live rehearsal at Sonic Pump Studios). Also a song worth looking into if you want a very unique experience in regards to vocals, musicianship and composition.
A lot of people compare Tuomas(lead writer/keyboard in Nightwish) to the lead writer in Wintersun named Jari. Both are INCREDIBLY brilliant composers.

I like that without research (just organic reaction), you noticed the 'Oceansoul' reference in the visuals. You can find it's meaning on the song 'Oceansoul' on the 'Century Child' album and 'Dead Boys Poem' song from 'Wishmaster's album (this one is very depressing, so be ready if you're sensitive or going through a bad moment... it might triggers and it requires a peaceful moment to really enjoy it). That gave a fanbase name in the 90s and early 00s to whoever could identify with Tuomas' perceptions. I mean, before 'Nightwish Army', 'Oceansoul'.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe they use singers (except for the chorus -- adult and child) in the backup track for harmony. Marco can reach quite high when singing harmony and I believe it is him that you hear. He doesn't always sing gritty Try: th-cam.com/video/cMtKG8hRNL4/w-d-xo.html.

Just gonna reiterate what was said by previous people: both layman and pro are entitled to have fun and joy in listening to something. The perspective changes. Whoever came to this channel and expected everything to be broken down - this is the wrong address. There is a certain quality to Sam’s videos and it’s not being ashamed of displaying excitement and showing exhilaration when a singer nails down something technical. And this song is technical (regardless of who sung it originally). Just take it easy folks. Let someone new to the Army feel welcome and guided, not scorned as if he defaced an object of reverence.

You don't have to know the backstory of a song to make reaction videos out of them imo. Some fans are TOO fanatic and can be really nasty about this song. I've grown up on and with Nightwish, I've been through all their "eras" and I didn't know about the backstory of this song until last year, because to me the song was amazing even without knowign it, and now that I DO know the backstory, the live performance makes more sense, and I came to love the closeness of the bandmembers even more because of it, but I don't think you need to know the story behind EVERY song to love and enjoy them. Some of their songs are in finish, and while I AM a quarter finish, sadly I do not speak the launguage and so I just enjoy what I hear, even without reading the translation.
My point being; you don't HAVE to understand a song OR know everything about it to like it or to listen to it, so my slightly more fanatical fan-brethren CHILL OUT with the upset comments!
And take care of yourself dear Sam, you are one of my favourite vocal coaches on youtube, so I want you to be as healthy as possible!

Possibly one of the most personal and emotional tracks, Many will tell you the particular reasons Tuomas wrote this but it stands as an anthem to depression and suicidal feeling of many. Also this track also uses many metaphors for feeling.
Much of this is my own interperatation of the lyrics.
The very first movement "White Lands of Empathica" is a direct reference to Stephen Kings Dark Tower series. in the second movement you get references to feelings of being useless, no longer able to function and hating what you seem to be. Also here the refrain appears "I cannot cry cos the shoulder cries more", here you have the situation where all of us feel we have someone who is our shoulder to cry on, our prop if you will, but what happens when the shoulder is as or even more hurt than you are! Also I cannot Die I am a whore for the cold world, This, to me anyway, seems to be about having to put a brave face on things the world expects you to be a certain thing no matter what you actually feel, likewise the two faces reference, having to be one thing for the outside and yet inside you feel something totally different. There is also the harking back to youth and better times of home. In the Pacific section, here you have clues as to the thoughts of the writer, "tuck me in" under the waves, beneath the pain! reference also made later in the track to drowning as a preferred death. Tuomos also refers here to the relationship he used to have with Tarja, beneath the same pale moon.
In this part also the whispered lyric describes the futility he was feeling, being raped again and again was possibly a metaphor for feeling used constantly, being the scapegoat. also talks of the total betrayal by people he thought of as friends as well as everyone else,A common feeling with severe depression too., A note here too, when you hear three minutes and counting then there are just three minutes to the time when Tuomas makes the throat cutting gesture and you hear the drum heart beat slow and falter to a stop.
In the final section imagine a Mothers words to her child who either had committed suicide or was in serious danger of doing so. Then you feel the emotion even more so.
    Thanks for your reaction though,

Great reaction mate 😎🤘 this is a complex and very emotional song, for us fans and more so for Tuomas (on Keyboards) It’s cut in 5 parts tracking the swing of emotions that he personally felt after firing the first singer, Tarja. It’s is also his metaphoric suicide, hence the cut of the pendulum. When Emppu and Marko stand near him they are giving him emotional support...love this line up of the band, so supportive and the happiest place they have been 😎🤘

Hi. On Beste Zangers watch it with Jennizelf with subtitles. Tuomas killed himself in this song so he didn't have to do it in real life. Marco and Emppu at the end of it they are standing next to Tuomas as brotherly love because he still get emotional with . This is after Tarja got fired. He doesn't have his ears in . If you look closely you can see Floor's stomach as she breathes on the long verses. On Floor's You Tube channel she says that she's highly sensitive and had dark moods . It's called Story Times it's about her and where she lives with Hannes and their daughter Freja. Her other one is called Floor Finds . Story Time 4 and Finds is 2

Tuomas always writes symphonic tracks and he usually uses the London Philharmonic orchestra and choir so that's probably what you are hearing in the background. BTW, for this song only Tuomas has the vocals turned off in his ear devices because he finds the vocals too hard to listen to. It breaks him up. A lot of this song breaks me up too especially part 5.

This is actually a very very heavy song, where the pendulum is dropping lower and lower . Thoamas created this song when the former singer left. The grieve, the los, betrayal, the end of the life they knew ( you hear the cutting sound of the pendulum when it slashes threw the air and the heart stops. It is about grieve, inner struggle, betrayal and overcome.
