I worked there as an apprentice during the early 90's. One of my duties was to replace faulty aircraft warning lights, the lights around the thinner base had to be changed by opening a small window just big enough to fit through and leaning out and around to get to the globe. When on the mast which used to sway in the wind a little, everything had to be tied to your body i.e spanners etc. Fire drills you had to walk down the stairs located in the centre. There are store rooms floors located in the thinner tube (cant remember how many) When i was there the revolving restaurant was still kitted out with the chairs and tables and we used to use the bar on a Friday after work for a couple of drinks. The tower was often above the cloud line in the mornings and during thunder storms would be struck by lighting. Eventually working there every day you become a bit blasé about the view. Should have appreciated it more.

Thank you very much for your time to write this comment and give us more insight into the tower. It was very interesting to read. I want everyone to share their experience in this comment section about this amazing structure.

What a shame that this beautiful tower is not accessible to the public. Two restaurants gone to waste. An observation deck wasted. Why ? Just ask the ANC government. Far too dangerous for tourists in Hillbrow. Nice. I tried walking from the Holiday Inn President hotel to the JG Strydom Tower in 1982. Found out the tower was closed to the public due to bomb threats by the ANC. Today it is the ANC again who have caused this tower to be closed to the public. Viva the Revolution ! What a waste. The Holiday Inn President Hotel is now a squatters hotel.

Strijdom is pronounced "stray dom'" I worked in the transmission environment which included,. HF/VHF radio, microwave, and analogue coaxial channelised systems. I did quite a bit of work at the then JG Strijdom Tower during the mid/late 80's on the analogue data transmission (Saponet) that was carried via microwave channels. JG Strijdom Tower has been renamed to Telkom Tower.

I had the privilege of working at the Tower for 8 years between 1988 and 1996. I also had all the keys that opened up every door in the tower, so I can pretty much remember almost every floor. All 3 lifts where high-speed lifts and at the time they were the safest lifts developed. After being in quite a few high speed stops due to the lifts safety features, it was quite nerve wracking, I still have dreams about it today. There are so many stories about this tower. One in particular is Stanley - The towers ghost LOL - met him once... Also the fire safety and evacuation procedures where efficient in those days, and while working there we had many regular fire drills. The tower is fully equipped to handle any safety issues (well it was - with the new South Africa I presume it is no longer being maintained) I personally have walked down the tower at least 10 times - thank goodness never up.

My step-dad used to work in that tower, some of the true stories he tells are quite frightening, like the one of a guy taking a small motorcycle up the lift and taking it out onto the ledge about 1meter wide above the restaurants and below all the microwave dishes and doing a lap around the outside without any safety equipment. But that's the sort of thing people did in the 80's they weren't worried about PPE.

I'm sure you know but the building you mention at 19:06 was the Post Office, I remember going in there with my Dad to fetch parcels, I'm not sure if it was always a Post Office but by the building design (looks like something from the 1930's-1940's), probably confirms it.
I'm curious, whom did you reach out to at Telkom to go in and see it? I've been mesmerized by that tower everytime I pass there and wonder what it looks like.
It's just a shame that they don't allow cameras, I believe showing one picture inside would generate a huge interest.

    • @Livinginsatv

Hi Tandiwe the time to open was a rough estimation based on the information I got from the JDA could be more could be less. Trying to convince the head of the project to come to one of my podcasts. The costs involved in the proper revamping of the tower are huge. Just to install an elevator is R11million, including the shipment from the elevator itself from Switzerland.
