    History
Prior to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the suburb laid on government owned land called Randjeslaagte that now makes up the Johannesburg CBD. It was a triangular shaped piece of waste land not used for farming and the future suburb lies in the northern apex of the triangle. The origin of its name is simple, the suburb lies on the brow of the east west mountain ridge that crosses the Johannesburg CBD. It was laid out as a suburb in during 1894-95.

    More Hillbrow:
Hillbrow gets mixed reviews. On the one hand people won't go near it. They speak about extreme levels of crime, high-rise apartment blocks jammed with migrants and refugees, hijackings, murder and prostitution.
Hillbrow, they say, is a place of alarming crime statistics and new year parties where couches, fridges and TVs get thrown out of windows. An inner-city lawlessness reigns unchecked. Some call it the crime capital of the city.
BBC Two ran a documentary in 2007, called Law and Disorder in Johannesburg revealing the state of lawlessness in parts of the city, particularly Hillbrow; Lauren Beukes' Zoo City, is set in Hillbrow.
On the other hand, others remember it differently. During apartheid, and predominantly a white neighbourhood, it was known for its tolerance; regarded as one of the few 'grey' areas, where different ethnic communities hung out in a politically progressive and cosmopolitan society. It had a hip, artistic and creative community, and the streets buzzed until all hours.
And things have changed since 2007.
Now community initiatives try to curb crime and keep the streets clean, like Ekhaya Neighbourhood; walking tours are offered by organisations such as Dlala Nje, a regeneration programme trying to change the face of Hillbrow and Ponte - the tallest high-rise cylindrical building that dominates the inner city skyline, along with the Hillbrow Tower with its highly visible pink ball; the violent crime rate is down, and new year's celebrations are less chaotic.
Buildings have been reclaimed from their hijackers (groups of criminals who take over buildings from their landlords by force) and remodelled. But not all the buildings are safe, or clean. The improvement, whilst happening, is gradual.
Hillbrow relies heavily on civic partnership, policing forum volunteers and the community for its improvement as there is evidence of police corruption - drug deals go down in full sight of police vehicles, children play in parks whilst drug dealers do deals, prostitutes walk the streets.
The suburb is still troubled by poverty, overpopulation and crime.
As a visitor, get in touch with Dlala Nje, the Lutheran Community Outreach foundation, the Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust, or Joburg Places - for walking tours. It is not safe to walk through Hillbrow on your own, but those who have been say that if you get the opportunity, you should go.

Having lived for over 3 years in Hillbrow back 50 years ago, I can tell you that Hillbrow was the place for artists, writers and creative people and was far, far safer to walk around than the no-go zone it has now become. However, people should be aware that Hillbrow covers a very small land area, about a square kilometer, and its claim to fame in those days was that it was South Africa's only high rise area.

I stayed there for a while in the 80’s. It was rough then but you could walk the streets at night. There was a night club at the top of a flight of stairs that the bouncers would assault drunks before they threw them down them. I paid by the month at theHuguenot Hotel on Claim St, and drank there mainly. Saw a few fights. I would ask the white barman for a beer, he would turn around and tell a little black guy to get it, the little black guy would hand it to the barman who would give it to me. I also frequented the Gypsyville Tavern around the corner run by a notorious hard Galswegian called Danny Bonner. We got pissed up a few times in that place and went for a late party drink in Soweto. People there were drunk and friendly. I thank God I am still alive sometimes. The things we do when we are young and drunk and adventurous.

Hachi Maru I think it might have been the Newzelander. A guy in his 40’s. There was a big blond old guy always at the bar that used to take the piss out of him. The barman beat him up one night.
Do you remember the guy who had the JCB’s? It may have been McGee. Quite a character.
I lived at the hotel. Used to get work from the Scottish recruitment guys at Hilltop shopping and business centre.
Do you remember the night club at the top of the stairs? Rough as fuck but a good laugh.

If you up grade this place to a redlight district like in frankfurt germany or amsterdam neatherlands, it could be a place for a goodnight life but of course you need good security first. If you made a nice strip along some road with strip clubs night clubs and brothels it could make good business. The repperbahn part of town in hamburg germany use to have a bad reputation back in the days and now it´s one of the known redlight districts in europe.

This is sad, but was to be expected, after the change in power. I lived in Hillbrow for a year in the early 80s (Kapteinstreet) and worked in the Carlton Hotel. You occaisionally heard gunshots at night, even then. Sometimes you could see the bulletholes in windows of stores. White people were allowed to open carry handguns then, and many did. Still, I felt safe anywhere, any time. Black people had to be out of town at night, unless they had a permit from their employer and were commuting to or from work. News has rung out to the world telling what a sh'thole SA has now become.
