  • This is a why I try to avoid ExPats here in Thailand, and why we have such a poor reputation,,,
Sadly it seems that Thailand draws the worst of the worst,
Thankfully as I meet more and more subscribers, my opinion is starting to change for the better.

I want to meet you , Doc. I love this video above all others. You are the type of person I would meet over seas. Your type is hard to find, our type is hard to find.

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean Of course, I would be honored to do so.

I agree Doc and I haven't even been yet, I wanna retire there and I'm like you I'm cautious on who I break bread with, I tend to be to myself, I won't be female chasing I'm looking for a life mate not a piece of tail. I've had enough tail to last 4life times I just wanna live my life. I've learned that Peace of Mind is priceless, I love dogs too w😂 my last dog was 14.5yrs old when he died me and him had just divorced my 2nd ex. What I've learned that most of these guys never grew up, they were never able to do these things in their home countries. I did all that when I was young. A Real Man is a rare thing to find in this world. I'm getting off the plane and going to my room then the beach relax for a few days then start traveling and seeing the sites life is to short. Great video Doc👍🏾

New subscriber here. I've lived in Hawaii and I love the Asian culture and Buddhist Religion (respect for every living organism). From watching several blogs, the thing that impresses me the most about Thailand, the fact that so many expats feel free enough in Thailand to complain so much. In China expats don't complain for fear of going missing. Cheers to freedoms in Thailand 🥂

hey Edward first off my friend welcome to the channel I'm very happy that you decided to join and subscribe and I truly appreciate that....
I have found that it doesn't matter where in the world I am I can find expats that complain about everything about their host country..
it is a shame because to be honest with you if you're that unhappy just go back home...
now I have personally been to China over 25 times and I can say this much I do know people there that complain quite frequently however they're not doing it in the open they're not broadcasting it on WeChat or TH-cam or anything like that you are right there is that fear ...

An observation I have made is that the expats I have met outside of tourist areas, have both assimilated more and are the type of people who are willing to move to real Thailand in order to make their wives happy as they love to live with their families. I lived in a small village in a rarely visited province and most of the expats there were very nice people. I believe what you are saying but, why do you stay in a tourist area? Living with Thai people is wonderful.

I agree with you 100% and if I was going to be living here full time forever I would definitely move out of this area and probably go up to the Chang Mai or Chiang Rai area
I'm staying down here simply because of the social media experiment that I'm working on as well as the fact that I love the island life

I tried living in another country as an expat and found almost all the expats worked at jobs taking money from other expats because the locals wouldn't deal with them. So they did mostly "immigration/visa consulting" and real estate to foreigners. And others just came right out and asked for money. I had one guy ask for $3500 US because he had a debt back home! Like every foreigner is so wealthy, they can just give away that kind of money. In that country, that amount would have paid for one year rent in my 3 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment! NEVER give them a penny. I would give some money but mostly food to the poor, most of whom were refugees. Does Thailand have a lot of refugees and people begging?

    • @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
      @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean  ปีที่แล้ว +4

You're 100% right most of the expats that are working in Thailand are doing Visa consulting Airbnb property rentals crop like this or they're just flat out trying to steal your money through some stupid crypto mining b*******....
On Phuket to be honest with you there's very little begging there might be five or six beggars and that's it but it's mostly older people or people who have been deformed from some type of disease . .

I am the kind of guy that keeps his sex life to himself. Most "normal" guys keep that to themselves. Don't really understand people who move from another and complain about the country they moved to. If you don't like it, move back. It is not your country. I actually like to explore and try new cultures and things. Hope to visit Thailand someday, if it is for me may spend some extend time there. Your videos are extremely informative.

listen man it's really weird so many guys come here strictly for the sex tourism and they automatically think that everybody else is here strictly for that as well and they just start telling you s*** they start showing you s*** it is absolutely insane..
as far as the people that go to another country and disrespect the local culture talk about immigrants and stuff like that these people are just completely ignorant it doesn't matter where they're going or where they've been they're just going to be ignorant no matter what.
and sadly enough I'm going to tell you something it's pretty much always from the same countries I know that sounds ignorant cuz I'm stereotyping people but it has been my experience that it is people from the same few countries that do it all the time.

Some guys are just freaks and need to regale other men with their exploits, I guess because they like the sound of their own voice?? I've heard plenty of stories.
Any guy who pays and acts like the women are "attracted" to him is deluded in the first place.

In Australia there are some places/ bars I won’t go to because i know it’s full of people who are not particularly nice people. I assume every country has the same types of locations.
The trick is working out which places you are suitable for you.
I also find best friendships I have made , started with having drinks after an activity like, golf, sailing , scuba diving etc. Not by a random encounter at a bar, especially in a Red light district

This is why I'm very happy living in a village with mostly Thai friends, it's stressful here going to the coast with my wife for holidays, I feel like I'm constantly apologising about foreigners, I've had many ask if my wife is a bar girl in front of her and you're right, you're more likely to get scammed by other expats here than the locals, if you give advice to anyone, don't buy anything through another foreigner here, don't even rent a property, they'll charge you double or more but there's still alot of good ones I know in the country, I don't see any of them much because I live so far from everyone and am happy that way

Hi Mark. I’ve met the kind of people you talk about and I share your opinion 100%. I do my best to avoid them, yet even so I managed to get ripped off by one of them for quite a large sum of money. However, I have to say that after living in northern Thailand for 11 years I find these people to be a definite minority. I meet and am friends with some thoughtful, kindly and concerned (dog loving 😊) expats. On the other side I’ve met some digital nomads who are arrogant know alls, won’t stop talking about themselves and boast about their score on the bar scene. Surely it’s unwise ( and unfair) to generalise. We should take or leave people as we find them. Generalising appeals to certain self-righteous, judgemental individuals because they feel it confirms them in their own superiority.

I like the fact that you can easily meet people and strike up conversations with foreigners in places like coffee shops- something you can't really do back home. I think it depends where you go. If you live in Sukhumwit or Pattaya, the expats are probably there for the bar girls. If you live in rural Isaan, the expats are probably there with a local wife, and may be more introverted to survive there.

Thank you, Dr. Mark, valuable info. Problem is: how to meet non-expats there? An Irish guy on YT says he feels "invisible" and lonely in Thailand because he's a Farang. Having said this, I'd like to meet you in Phuket next January, talk about life over some beers...

    • @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean

Here's the problem I guess okay we farangs are looked at in different ways by different people.
The local guys really don't want to have much to do with us because they think we're here stealing their women.
The local women want to have stuff to do with us because they want our money.
I do talk to expats I do have some friends here that are expats you just need to find people that are more like you.
Find something that you're interested in and see if there's a Facebook group about it here in Thailand..
I joined a motorcycle group and I've met some really nice guys granite there's some complete idiots in the group but you just ignore them and avoid them..
I feel bad for the Irish guy because I know the guy you're talking about and he's not having the greatest experience..

I'm not so certain about the English teacher aspect to be honest with you I've met a lot of English teachers that are genuinely nice people that are younger and just trying to see the world.

If I ever move to Thailand, it's about trying to live there. Expiercing life as it is, getting to know the allday routines and customs. And foremost, obviously, learning to speak the language to be able to communicate with local people on a proper base. Because to me it makes no sense, to move to a foreign country without having gained a certain amount of the, at least, main spoken language on a level so I can have sorta fluent conversations with the locals. Expecting them to speak my language is the worst expression of ignorance I can imagine. But I grew a trilingual (tbh, doesn't help much beyond the western hemisphere) and was from birth on raised in several countries. So I'm sort of used to blend in a another country und learning new languages etc. But it's still everytime a challenging move.

    • @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
      @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I took notice of the chatter about the “ugly westerner”. It has been my experience for the most part that the majority of Americans that I meet in foreign countries are usually for the most part well traveled and extremely interesting...

High standards of living for cheap
Free health care and also you can get private health care , even if you are a foreigner
You can also buy health insurance for cheap and covers all to include dental and vision.

Anyway, I am going to Asia again after this. And I would love to meet people like the Doctor here of this video
Let me share something, the kind of expats he talks about in this video are EVERY WHERE, name the country, they are there.
I Have been to over 14 different countries and the good ones are very few and the bad ones are abundant.

As a long-term traveler I have experienced some of the same things with westerners in Thailand, Malaisia, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines, I always keep the following quote in mind as I move through the world:
"May you think before you speak, will you give before you seek, the tides of wisdom will cool the burning sands, but only for those who have a plan"

I've been here for about 2 years. I guess you would put me in the Digital Nomad category.
I did notice alot of the expats I've met tend to be alcoholics. I kind of always attributed that to the fact that I mostly meet people in bars.

I think it's more than that I think they just have so many different issues in life that the drinking helps mask some of the others I guess...
Plus sadly enough let's face it there's not a lot to do here if you're not an overly active person...
I had this conversation with a guy last night about what we like to do and as I was saying one thing I enjoy I enjoy swimming I like going to the beach I like swimming in my pool I like just relaxing I don't have to be at a bar I don't have to have a drink in my hand.

Mark it’s quite sad but a lot of expats in my experience have a sense of entitlement . They forget they are a guest of the country they now reside in. I’m no angel and I plan in retiring to Thailand but it’s the food, the people , the weather and the whole lifestyle that I like. A conversation with some stranger about their sexual exploits with someone young enough to be their daughter does nothing for me either. I know a bunch of ex pats out there and they do go to bars, have drinks and get girls but they don’t act like that. They all have a good life in Thailand .
