What is it about living in Thailand that people find so hard?
It's budgeting,,,,,,,
It's all about budgeting and adapting to your new environment.
It seems that no one is willing to tell people what a proper budget it or how to make a budget and stick to it.....
My budget it now $1500 USD a month, but again I live a different lifestyle than most who are coming here....
I think that a safe budget to live on here so that you can have an fantastic lifestyle would be 3K USD.......

Great video Mark. I’ve been watching yours a long time. I spent all of 2023 plotting my escape to Thailand. Step by step i “dismantled” my previous life.
Had been seperated from my Brazilian wife for 2 years. Finally got the settlement nailed down and divorced. Sold: Boat. Touring motorcycle. Home gym. Tractor. RV. Gave pretty much everything else away to friends or the ex. I kept two stateside homes as investments and gave the Brazilian a home on the coast i built there.
Estate planning done. Retired early from my job as an airline captain. 41 year career: done. With 2 suitcases and a backpack, i pulled the trigger. I am here now, since early March, living in a rented pool villa in Jomtien.
I found my villa, (year lease), opened a bank account. Got my multi-entry O-visa….all finished almost before i was over my jet lag.
I made 4 trips to Thailand from late 2022 and through 2023. During that time i met my Cambodian girlfriend and she lives with me. She cooks most meals at home and is TIGHT with money. I’m lucky here.
Still, i like to go out occasionally. Dinner. Maybe a bar with live music. Not against an occasional lady drink. My girl’s cool with that. She was a barbecue vendor at the Rhonpo market when we met. She was not a bar girl, but understands life in Pattaya, and me, quite well.
My villa rent in an almost Beverly Hills style gated community in Jomtien, close to everything, 50K baht. ($1350 US). My max budget monthly, including rent, is $5000/month. I saved more than 2 years worth of living expenses in cash before i arrived. Won’t touch my 401K or social security for 2 more years.
I’ve been here many times. Know the games the girls play. . Enjoyed many nights being an old guy trying to act like a young guy. Dropped a ton of money during my holidays.
Mark. I got the message! Living here as a resident is NOT the same as when on holiday. To do so is a recipe for economic disaster.

Coffee is much better at a 7 than Starbucks. And for like 50 baht I think. Netflix cards are like 500 baht and I’d get like 2 and a half months or something. TH-cam premium is like 150 baht and I’ll never go back to commercials lol. Weed is much more expensive than home really. Id smoke from time to time and go to Phuket Cannabis on Nanai and get Thai stick for cheap. I think it was 400 baht for 3 mixed joints which would last 4-6 sittings.
I have a girlfriend, a much more down to earth one than most imo..but that does increase the budget no matter what obviously. We’ve been together about 2 years now and the cost is much more dependent on what I provide such as food, shelter, motorbike etc..which I also benefit from so that cost is not much to bear. Of course I’ve bought her a little gold, idk how you can escape that, but last time I told her I would get her some she told me the price had increased a lot like you said and suggested another gift but that I trade her old bracelet in for a little bigger one so ya know..
Long story short..after calming down the entertainment budget after a year or so I was able to enjoy all the comforts for around $1200 a month. Taking into account border runs via air, and a couple land.

Additional on the ground info like this is priceless for someone like me whose aiming to be out there by May next year - if a 2 week trip in the next 6-8 months or so proves to me, Thailand is what I think it is.
That's right! 50b for a decent Cafe mocha at 7. And u can up the power of ur Thai weed, by adding a hash nugget on top. That'll be same strength as the powerful stuff I get here in Vegas - and for half the price! I really hope try-land doesn't plan on banning it. An h-nugget goes for about 1,000b and will last u 2 weeks. As for the coffee, it goes for $9 here in Vegas starbux. Crazy stuff!!

The raw honesty in this video is refreshing. Also, a note on the "girls" issue... my first couple of years in Thailand when I was running around with the "bar girls" and going crazy with 7 live-in "girlfriends" at the same time, I probably spent $100,000 USD per year in those first two to three years. After I stopped drinking and got away from the bar scene and the bar girls, my budget normalized at around $1,500 per month. It's the "bar lifestyle" that includes the drinking and the girls that will eat through your money.

But if someone is on a fixed income or pension, then girls and bar scene lifestyle could be very bad.
Horrifically bad....
Even for someone with a sizable income....
Desciplined is the key of success in life no matter if it is health working out , wealth or budgeting doc.

Hey Doc my last trip to Cuba was costing me $20/night incl. breakfast and I swindled a $5 dinner with a couple restaraunts meanwhile people were spending absolute minimum $100-$150/night 😂😂
That's awesome to hear how was the food and stuff I have had some incredible experiences in Cuba just I'll be honest with you my last time there was brutal however every other time I loved it so much I wish I could go back I just don't know if I ever will......
A lot of people go broke because they do things in Thailand that they never did at home like eating at good restaurants every day, dating lots of girls and going to expensive bars all the time.

They look at it and think it's not as expensive as home and then realize that if the constantly spend more Ethan they should,,,,, the eventually have none to spend in the end.....

Excellent blog Mark and you are right about discipline. I believe you have to practice in your home country first before you come here. Ohhhh and need to tell you that genetics loads the gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger. Your keeping healthy, slim, non smoker, active not an alcoholic etc....youll do more than fine im sure.... 💯 😊

I'm currently retired in the Philippines. Appreciate the female segment of the video lol. One can only be single and wander so many malls and coffee shops for so long. It's not that easy as a woman to meet women here.

Retiring @49 in Phuket should be everyones dream/goal, most people in the US without kids could do it if they were discipluned, but too many ppl blow $ on worthless stuff.
Phuket is a plastic turist place with 3-4 normal thai prices..but hey everybody has their thing =)

I don't know mate I've lived here for three plus years and traveled all over the country and Phuket to me is still absolute Paradise....
It doesn't have to be crazy expensive as I have proven time and time and time again....
Facts!! Like blowing $200-$300 at the bar during one weekend. Or eating at Instagram restaurants.
Look again I can understand if you're coming here on a two-week vacation going crazy blowing money at the bars and as you say going to the Instagram famous restaurants and stuff but if you're living here??????? You don't do that shit unless you're trying to flex on TikTok

Actually like an absolute idiot I do not use sunscreen I have never used sunscreen and quite honestly I don't think I ever will....
Coming from the east coast of Canada sunscreen and Sun cancer was really not that high on my list of worries so I'm not that concerned about sunscreen....
I know this much it's about $4 for a really good size bottle of sunscreen here and I don't know how long that that would last to be honest with you....
Again sunscreen is something that I just don't use again maybe it's because I'm an idiot but I've never used it my whole life...

I've been to Thailand many times but never saw the beautiful western girls running around with beautiful Thai girls. Wish you would elaborate.
I didn't really say that they were beautiful Western girls but you will find lots of Western girls here over in certain areas like Ap Nang with Thai girls I see it all of the time....
I know lots of girls because they reach out to me and tell me their experiences going to the massage shops.....

Great video mate. A quick question. Do you know of any way to filter water without buying the 100 bottles a month? Seems like a huge waste if it's easy to filter maybe?
I'm sure there's some type of filtration system you could buy.....
My thing is I really like the smaller bottles I just put them up in the freezer that way they're ice when I wake up in the morning and I take them out for my morning walk....
I will say this much those machines you see where you can fill up the Big 10 l bottles and stuff I would not use those I seen inside of them and they are filthy disgusting full of mold....

Hi Doc, another great video. I moved from the land of Oz to Jomtien in October. I had never eaten Thai food until coming here. I found a little family run restaurant in a side soi like you said and go there most days and absolutely love it there. I have a little fruit stand near my condo and buy my fruit from there, prices are similar to the market but I am happy to support this beautiful hard working husband and wife couple. I recently started using a spending tracker. I love the beach and am looking to move closer to the beach and perhaps to Phuket. I hear the talk about Phuket being super expensive so appreciate your candor. I can't wait for your upcoming condo video to see what I can get for my money. I am here on a 12 month contract till November so doing some forward planning for affordable places (not expecting cheap though) close (a few minutes walk hopefully) to the beach to start my search and would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks again.

I've had £500 ($700) months plenty of times and I've had a few £8,000+ ($11,000) months (Unfortunately).... The thing I notice is that you don't necessarily get more enjoyment from the expensive months.
Some of my fondest memories are from the times where I've been broke and spending next to nothing. You can have a great life without spending too much, it just won't involve crazy nights out surrounded by hookers

Thanks for the vlog Mark. As always delivered in an interesting and engaging style. You can either budget or you can’t in my experience, but Thailand has some serious dangers even for the disciplined! It seems as though the only expats living in Thailand who are happy do NOT have a girlfriend.
For me, your video highlighted the potential costs of transport. I am pretty scared about learning to ride a scooter, which means I would have to live fairly central or take a taxi of some sort every time I go out.

I'll be honest with you Paul writing a scooter here is not as dangerous or as scary as everybody makes it out to be just be smart about it and avoid the really crazy High season traffic and you'll be fine....
What I would suggest to someone is come during low season go to a spot that's not crazy touristy rent a bike and get used to driving...
It's truly liberating man getting on a bike and driving around here I'm heading out on a two-month tour in a couple of weeks ......

I think a lot of stuff is really good and you gave me an ideas for my list for the future when i will go and retire in Thailand in 2 years... i forgot streaming. Sadly its getting more and more expensive every few month. :D I will plan for netflix + amazon 40-50 euro
As you said ppl like me should listen to tips, make plans and always be honest to yourself with the budget for yourself as everybody is different. As for me i plan for the first year at least with +15% on each point to be safe for myself. And make sure that i always have at least ~20% free for saving each month or not planned expanses.

Sound is ok .. re fruit I buy watermelon pineapple and cantaloupe melon every day. Sometimes get grapes , cherries , and strawberries, but are pricey .. durian is a rare treat for the gf haha 😅

I can spend under $20 on any given day. Not EVERY day, mind you. So I pick 5-7 days a month to spend more for fun. But I limit it to that. It is about being smart the other 20+ days.
Yet i eat good food most days. I swim in a pool every day. I can walk to the beach for a sunset, every day etc etc. And many of these things are FREE.

My 'entertainment' budget is $100 USD per day. This is a lot but I come to Thailand to have a good time!! I leave the hotel with the cash I've alloted for the evening. When the cash is spent the evening is over.

20k baht/mo for taxi/grab/etc services without having to worry about insurance / registration / parking / repairs ... worth it. It's nice to know your nightmare is a good deal imo :D My car payment in the 90s was $525/mo.

Insurance for the bike is included in the rental fee, so is the registration parking is free everywhere you go and the rentals company maintains the bike ....

It's been 30 years, but I honor her conviction. I don't drink, smoke, gamble, or collect random doodads... transportation with AC will be my sin tax I guess.
It's funny because my mom for years begged me not to get a motorcycle and I never did in Canada at least not after I was 12 years old I think....
But then I had to explain to her that when I go away to like Cuba or Thailand someplace tropical my greatest joy that I have in life is jumping on a bike and going for a drive....

Did you get a visa on arrival or a real tourist visa? Can you extend visa on arrival?
Right now I'm getting a free visa on arrival it's good for 30 days and then yes I can go to immigration and extend it for an extra 30 days...
Then I do have to leave the country

The visa on arrival is very simple to extend all you have to do is go to immigration you're going to need a photocopy of your passport your current Visa stamp as well as a copy of your residence papers you'll need a passport size photograph of yourself and it's going to cost you 1,900 baht
But you have to do it before you're 30 days are up

For several thousand years women have really enjoyed one distinct advantage in society; unlike men they can raise the socioeconomic status of themselves and their family through marriage. My experience is that the gap that exists in Western couples is more a chasm in most Thai-farang relationships. Even highly successful farang end up marrying women from the lower half of the Thai socioeconomic ladder. I did this myself marrying the daughter of a farming village family with 20 rai of land. She bought 40 more and planted rubber on all of it with her earnings in the US.
What I do not understand is why many farang seem unwilling to set boundaries for their Thai partner. Looking for a wife to have another child with and be the step-mother to my then 3 year old daughter, I was very clear with every woman I pursued a relationship with that any breach of trust I would have would be the end of the relationship. Yes, I did pick a girl 17 years younger than me who had the body of a model, but I insisted on finding one that had a rock-solid sense of personal responsibility. I think most farang pick a Thai partner primarily on the basis of sexual attraction (which is important) and therefore do not set proper boundaries.

I agree with you most of those people that struggle did not know how to manage their money at home. A lot of people in the states are living paycheck to paycheck already and a lot these people were living off overtime money. A lot of people never look at these things, plus a lot of them have 5 or 6 credit cards they were or are living off of and or paying off. Then add the girls into the equation. If you couldn't get girls in the states you may have a budget problem. Take your time and find a lady thats not a working girl. I am listening to everyone like you my brother I don't have a problem getting a woman thats not a bar girl and i have my friend downstairs under full control, and my mind is clear i have had the gorgeous girls already, I'm 56 and i have 23yr old girls coming at me, not for money but just because who i am. So fellas wake up and be smart. Get your stuff together before you go. Thats what i have done so when i finally retire in Thailand i will live a good peaceful life saving money and not spending money like crazy. My plan is to just walk on the beach read my books write some books and relax.

Thanx for another great video. I would only add that the condos in Phuket are very small compared to USA. I have 4000 square foot house in Washington suburbs with 2 acres of land and if I wanted that size in Phuket it likely would cost me at least $ 5000 per month.Medical insurance is also. A problem as if you are over 70 and have even minor preexisting conditions you cannot get coverage so you will have to pay cash and hopefully be able to get back to your own country if you can get to be stable enough to travel and get back to your home country. Personally I enjoy coming to Thailand and other countries for vacation but need to live in a large space as opposed to 50 square meter condo. BTW my father died and 55 and so did most males in my family and yet I am here at 72 so don’t expect to die so soon, particularly since your subscribers would have to commit mass suicide.

I hear your brother I know a lot of people just cannot downsize there are some incredible condos here though where you can get tons of space like mind blowing space you can also go to different cities and find houses that you can rent with yards and everything like that and it's not going to break the bank brother....
Quite honestly you can rent a beautiful house here with a yard and a swimming pool for right around 1,700 US dollars a month....
When it comes to the health insurance man that's a tough one it really is....

Could not agree more with you . The girls and drinking is where most of the money goes . If you want to go out four nights plus a week drinking with a girl every night you’d need a huge budget . A night on the razz with a girl can easily set you back 4 thousand baht minimum a night and that’s a cheap night . Easily one hundred baht a month extra and these are just casual dates . Girlfriends are even more expensive . Better to stay single with the occasional bit of company maybe once or twice a week.
And that's the thing it's insane how much it costs because again you have to remember these girls have options I know the guys come here and they think that they've got all kinds of options the girls have tons of options too...
They will take advantage every single opportunity that they can.
You take them out to eat and you might order something for yourself that costs $5 you can be sure whatever they order it's going to be $20 it's just the way it is here...

Most EXPENSIVE things are as usual barlife and expensive women.

Mai 2024: Pattaya beach the Indian men now pay 3.000 Baht for a short time. In the Indian Club in walking street Indian men pay 6.000 for a night ( a night is max 4 hours). Living in North East Thailand for three years, if you understand Thai culture then it is not rocket science to understand the type of woman to avoid,
Both relationships I have had they have actually appreciated the relationship ,and never asked for money
,if they work in a normal job they live within there means and have true Thai values
Are they plain and and conservative , over 45.. with amazing bodies , yes, do they . have realistic expectations of me ,and money is not there key motivator , for sure 100%
However they are aware of their desires and aspirations and when they meet a foreigner that has adopted to Thai ways can speak thai and treat then as an equal they respect you asking for money is not on there agenda

Visas and unexpected medical expenses have to be paid for. Drinking and bargirls are expensive. Drinking and bargirls together will suck your money out of your wallet. If you can't budget at home you are going end up very broke here

People eat a larger volume of food portions because sub consciously they know that the food in USA is devoid of nutrients for the most part it takes time to break the habit but the trend is for food to have less and less nutrition so Thailand may not be far behind the US
I agree 99.93% with everything that you've said with the exception of Thailand's not that far behind the US when it comes to where their food nutrients are going to be......
If you're eating at local actual authentic Thai restaurants with foods intended for local people that's never going to happen....

No your wrong about large food portions.It came about from the working class we ate large amount cause we did large amount of physical labor,also my generation I'm seventy remember those who went through the great depression we know the stories of no food .our mother taught us to clean our plate.we are still preaching large amounts through muscle memory. Now days we labor like woman so we should lower our intake.
