Active EMG vs. Passive Seymour Duncan High Gain Shootout (Marshall, Mesa, Bogner, 5150)
Being an absolutely shameless Metallica fanboy, I put a set of EMGs into my Explorer. The results were more interesting than I expected, so I thought I'd do a deep dive comparing Active vs. Passive pickups.
Turns out that neither pickup is necessarily "better." Rather it depends on your amp, what you're playing and what noise you want to make. Who knew right?
I should consider apologising for the amount of Metallica Fanboy Worship going on in this video but I absolutely will not.
Hope you enjoy!

So this is the short version of the long-form video whereby I compared a set of Passive Seymour Duncan JBs to a set of Active EMGs in a high gain situation. Great review. To me the3 way switch makes a lot of difference. I got the mooer clone and the top setting is the mild one while the bottom one is more tight and gainy. I guess it changes compression, mid frequencies and gain character by using different diodes. I can see a red led behind the pots flashing when I play

    The sentiment that Marshall haven't done anything good since 1981 is probably a bit over the top . They've definitely done amps that suit certain players and music styles better than others. (For example it's pretty hard to play modern metal with a 2203). But with that being sad that JCM 800 2203 is a stone cold classic by any metric. It's probably one of the greatest ampa ever made if not the greatest. On the other hand the JVM is really just trying to imitate as many of Marshall's tones from over the years, and while it does it pretty well, especially compared to previous models like the TSL, it doesn't really do much unique that hasn't been done before . Also it's a modern amp that is super complex and full of the sort of stuff that makes your local tech shudder. The maintenance costs on these are through the roof because most techs will turn the job down and the only techs who will fix them charge a fortune. I'm a collector so I've owned almost everything there is to own made by Marshall at this point. The JVM was fun to own... Not many Marshalls have that much flexibility and can handle high gain. But I was never sad to see it go.

    Great video dude! it's really hard to find someone who had figured it out the treble control adds more gain on final sound. I'm mark V and Dual Recto owner. I love mark V, its my favorite compared to Recto but its absolutely true that mark V is not the easiest amp to dial in. In dual rectos (considering you have a TS plugged before the amp), in 10 seconds you can achieve such a unbelievable killer metal tone, great for rythms and leads at the same time. I mean, if you're in a store plugging your guitar for the first time in a Mark V amp, the probability your tone gonna suck is real high. Thats what happened to me. Its not supposed to happen with a "versatile" amp, isn't it? The amp should be able to deliver good tones in situations like that. Maybe "versatile" is not the word but flexible. The amp is versatile, i mean, you can play since the accoustic stuff to brutal metal tones but the way to get there is not flexible, you must know how the amp works otherwise it will sucks. Where in hell you will think the treble adds more gain if you're used to other amps? Anyways, i bought the amp at that time cause i knew its capacity, not because my tone was the best tone i ever got from an amp. In Dual Recto, you probably gonna get a good tones easier and faster. I think this is the reason why you rarely see people trying Mark amps on dealers.

      @@Yuriguitar11 Yeah in hindsight the phrase I wish I added to the video was: "This amp is versatile, but it ain't flexible" You CAN use it for pretty much any genre and gain stage (and it's gonna sound amazing each time), but the AMP is deciding how it's gonna sound for each tone. Not the player. You've gotta refine the noise the amp gives you, rather than tell the amp how it should sound.

    For live playing and jamming in a room, nothing beats a cranked tube amp. A small 20-50 watt tube amp is plenty for that purpose. But for ease of recording, travel and so forth, amp modelers like Fractal and Kemper win easy. Both are valuable.

    I’m a bedroom player and I have the mark v I don’t use it for metal, not my thing but I use all nine modes and I live in the country and can play at any volume as long as the house still stands. But I can use the overall volume control if I need to be quiet. I play on the 45 watt mode for everything except tweed I use the 10 watt mode and the variac setting but for me it’s a great amp, I also have a Mesa express 5:50+ which is also a great amp. I’m completely sold on Mesa products. I use channel three for my smoother gain settings which works really well for me. This video was a great explanation for newcomers. I’ve had mine for a little over a year but the express for nine years so I understood the Mesa philosophy from that amp. It really does help to read the manual because the everything at noon and a touch of reverb doesn’t really apply to these amps.

    What all you good musicians absolutely need to remember is this: Since the dawn of electric music a guitar's sound is no longer technically "pure" once the note you have plucked reaches the transducer (otherwise known as a pickup). Once your sweet sound gets converted from a sound wave based energy to an electric energy you have already begun a process of artificiality. A Techno-auditory fantasy of sorts. Electric guitar sound has always been the equivalent of a purring or roaring motor on an open highway whereas unplugged guitar has always been the sound of a man's feet walking or running on an open field. In the electric world the energy always has to make its way back to where it started so that someone can hear it with biological ears. Everything in between is a signal chain of manipulated electrical energy. Who is to say (without revealing their rank hypocrisy) which way of manipulation is best, with regards to digital v.s traditional amps? Everyone who plays electric guitar and tweaks his signal chain is simply putting upgraded parts in his car just the way he/she envisions and pleases.He/she is most certainly not cutting a trail thru a field however. Much like the invention of the electric guitar was an inevitable musical outcome of the industrial revolution the furtherance of the power of making music, and its Techno-allied nuances , continues into the digital age!

    They realize how bad emg's are and replace them with DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan's. I started playing because of Metallica and currently have 11 electric guitars with absolutely no room for active pickups in any of them..... Why even own a tube amp if you're using active pickups? They sterilize everything to sound like Metallica and average sevenfold.

    • @aftermathstudios3717
      @aftermathstudios3717 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think sterile is necessarily the way I would describe them. I would describe them more as consistent. That consistency absolutely has a place. Some amps (like the Mesa MkV) prefer consistency to bring repeatedly punched in the face by a set of passives. Or if you're somebody like Devin Townsend with insanely busy mixes, your guitar only has a small amount of sonic space for it to be heard in. Active Pickups are going to give you the consistency to keep everything within that tight section. Finally, active pickups are pretty damn hot (not as hot as people think though). Tube amps take advantage of hot pickups and add a bit of extra life and crunch just for having that hotter signal. A modeller or solid state amp is gonna struggle with that.
