    Your video saved me from going to the hospital yesterday! I can't thank you enough for videoing while treating yourself just to help others suffering from the same thing. I was in so much pain after two days of blockage. It was psychologically hard to do and especially being already worn out and dehydrated, but after doing it 3 times yesterday, I finally got it unblocked. Feeling so much better today! So relieved... pun intended! Side note... I had to use a soft bendable silicone straw as I didn't have a catheter. Worked great with the ky jelly and inserting water as you did. I hope you are doing better too with less blockages. God bless you! My name is Karen Adam

    So sad you are going through the hurdles, but I feel your pain. I just got my total proctocolectomy on the 14th and the sent me home too soon against my feelings and I am back in the hospital after being takin back by ambulance. Had surgery yesterday for abscess and UTI. So frustrating because my ileostomy is working with no problems, although had my first nighttime blowout, had to laugh. Keep smiling, thanks for videos.

      not to go on too long, but i've just recovered from an obstruction, it seemed to be 7 days start to finish, and in retrospect, i'm sure that as long as the obstruction sits and decomposes further, you are actually being poisoned on some level, so time is of the essence, and movement, although very uncomfortable, and counterintuitive,( i wanted to stay curled up,) is very important, if for no other reason but to decide if you do, after all, need to go to the hospital, so, no solid food, warm liquid, (in both ends, if you can,)hot water bottle, movement, and Tylenol ) as soon as gas escapes, it's going to move, thanks again

    I really can’t believe any medical professionals would give you the go on this.!! My gastrointestinal won’t even go into my stoma due to the fact that skin is easily damaged Please whoever followers her make sure your Doctor is aware of what you are thinking about doing to yourself . I’ve had MANY blocked bowels and over the last 2 years there coming every 3 months and NO ONE tells me to to this!!!!!

      A stoma has no nerve endings so it is safe to insert something of this size. As I said this was personally recommended for my situation by my medical team. Everyone is different and had differing advice. I appreciate your concerns but I wouldn’t post something dangerous without the disclaimer of only doing this under medical supervision.

    Oh boy, so many questions. Do you feel instantly better or does it take a while? How long do you leave it in? Does the stoma push the catheter into the bag? I've never used a catheter on my stoma, but this is a great trick to have in your "bag". Pun intended. Haha.

    • @gutmylifeback7926
      @gutmylifeback7926  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can take a while- sometimes you get a release as soon as you put it in, other times it can take longer. This is why you can leave it in and put a bag over the top- you can leave it in for a few hours up to a few days. However the stoma does like to try and push it out as that’s natural for it, so sometimes it can come out pretty quick- but when you inject the water it fills up a small balloon within the catheter to hold it in place. My stoma loves to spit it out so it can be a challenge to get it to stay in! But it’s a great option to have when all else fails! 😊

    Gut my life back, You said to keep a hold on the catheter or the Stoma will push it out. Does the Stoma not push the catheter into the bag?

  • @menrasy7815

    So meaning that u keep that left over catheter inside the bag, right ? My dad having this problem , after some hot water and activities , we don't see any result and im consider in doing the same thing you did.

    I am a board certified ostomy management specialist and came across your video. I have a few questions after watching everything and reading the comments. Did your medical team that recommended this include an OMS or WOCN? Did they mention anything about using saline vs water for the ileostomy lavage?

      The catheter has a balloon system in it- not sure about OMS or WOCN. They told me water at room temperature was fine to use.

      @@gutmylifeback7926 Thank you for the response. As a medical professional obviously I appreciate there are many different ways to treat blockages and am not suggesting that you are doing anything wrong. I asked more out of curiosity as an OMS and educator on this topic. I’ve included the best practice recommendations of the United Ostomy Associations of America below. Hope that helps.

      I’ve had my ileostomy for 25 years and in that time never have I heard about inserting a tube into your stoma in the hope it unblocks. I’ve not even inserted my little finger inside it, having experienced many obstructions leading to two separate small bowel resections. I understand this tube method can only be used if the obstruction is caused by constipation that’s just below the stoma. I’m now experiencing terrible blockages that I cannot get seen having had my appointment cancelled with the gastroenterology department. Lasting 26 hours and severe vomiting. Could I of used this tube method, my pain was below my belly button and caused severe pain

    • @jeffreydespommier
      @jeffreydespommier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ALH.Poppins Hi Adele. Performing an ileostomy lavage or inserting a catheter into the stoma should only be done by a nurse or ostomy specialist unless the doctor has instructed that it’s safe for you to do on your own. It’s important to rule out other causes and make sure that if there is a blockage it can be safely treated by flushing saline into the stoma. Because blockages can lead to serious complications if left untreated or if not treated properly, it’s why I’m not able to say if you could have done something on your own at home. Are you able to call a WOCN or have someone assess the situation over the phone if you are unable to get an appointment? I would go to the emergency room if you are having vomiting and symptoms of blockages lasting that long.
